The Book of the Ages

Man’s three problems are Sin, sorrow and Death. There isno fourth problem. Can any man find another problem?

Since the dawn of civilization man is trying to solve the aboveproblems. He is trying to eliminate Sin by police force, courtand Jail, but utterly failed, sorrow through counselling centresand death by installing super speciality hospitals. But He is alwaysat his wit’s end. Man can not solve his problems on his own, it isa wild goose chase.

Solution to the above problems is given only by a book ‘TheBible’, the book of the ages. The Bible is a timeless Book.

The Bible is a supernatural book as it came through the breathof the omnipotent God. Jesus said “man shall not live by breadalone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”Psalm 119:89 says “For ever, O Lord thy word is settled inheaven.” The Bible has one Hero, His name is Jesus, one villain, that is Satan; one problem, that is Sin, one solution that isSalvation. That is what the Bible is all about.

The Bible is a spiritual Book, that is why a natural man cannot understand it. 1 Cor. 2:14 says “But the natural man does notreceive the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness tohim; nor can he know them because they are to be spirituallydiscerned.

The Bible is a surviving Book. There have been emperorswho have decreed the extermination of the Bible and there havebeen atheists’ who have railed against Bible They are woodpeckers. Agnostics have cynically sneered at the Bible, the liberalsin the church have moved heaven and earth to remove the miraclesfrom the Bible. They are termites.

There have been materialists who just simply ignored theBible. But the Bible stands. Bible is settled in heaven.

The Bible is the Saviour’s Book. He can only solve theproblems of mankind. The Bible is a sustaining Book. It canonly help man grow spiritually.

The Bible is a super charged Book. It can only give super-power to man to make him strong. The Bible is a supersedingBook.

It is incomparable with any other Book in the world.

Dr. Robert G. Lee, had this tosay about the Bible:

“All of its enemies have nottorn one hole in its holy vesture, nor stolen one flower from itswonderful garden, nor diluted onedrop of honey from its abundanthive, nor broken one string on itsthousand-stringed harp, nordrowned one sweet word ininfidel ink.”

Dr. Adrian Rogers said “TheBible is not the book of the monthor the book of the year. It is theBook of the ages. It is unlike anyother book-for we read otherbooks, but this book reads us. Andno other book has ever had asmuch opposition as the Bible.People have laughed at it, scornedit, ridiculed it, made laws againstit, and even burned it. Yet it hasoutlived, out lifted, out loved, outreached, out ranked, and outblessed all other books puttogether. It is living, breathingword of God. Thank God for theBible.”

Spiritual food from Acts of Philippians

Throughout this Epistle Paul constantlyplaces emphasis on Christ by using such phrases as “of Jesus

Christ”, “by Jesus Christ”, “with Jesus Christ’’, “For to me tolive, is Christ”. What a testimony! And he was ever on the alertto be just that. He wanted to know Christ, fellowship with Him,die for Him, be raised with Him, and, in having these holyaspirations, set his affection on things above where Christ is,and pressed “toward the mark for the prize of the high calling ofGod in Christ Jesus”.

I press toward the mark (3:14)

The believer’s mark is perfection, or exact conformity to theLord Jesus Christ. Oswald Chambers said, ‘perfection meansbeing made one with Jesus so that the disposition that ruled Him

will rule us’. In pressing toward this mark, we must first possess Christ, and thenbe like Christ. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. When weare like Jesus, every foe is overcome, every difficulty is mastered, and the crownis about to be put on our heads. The prize is won and the honour will be wornforever. Exact likeness to Jesus we shall not attain here, but we may be verymuch more like Him than we are. Our tempers may be more heavenly, ourdisposition more spiritual, and our conversation more spiritual. We may be weanedfrom the present world, our motives may be purified, and holiness may becomeour element and delight. He who has begun a good work in us can carry it on, andas we are now very unlike what we were, we may yet become more Christ - likethan we are at present. But if we would, it must be the mark at which we aim. Wemust ever keep it in our eye, as the racer did the mark which was to decide therace. This we too often forget and are too well satisfied with present things. O! tosay with Paul, ‘for to me to live is Christ.’

Then they took away the stone from the place wherethe dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His

eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You haveheard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, butbecause of the people who are standing by I saidthis, that they may believe that You sent Me.” Nowwhen He had said these things, He cried with a loudvoice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had diedcame out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said tothem, “Loose him, and let him go.” (John 11:41-44).

The above scriptural passage is the climax of one ofthe greatest miracle that Jesus did while He was onthe earth, which was raising Lazarus from the dead. This unique miracle of giving life back to a personwho was dead and buried for four days is the seventhsign to establish that Jesus was indeed Christ, theMessiah, which Martha confessed eventually (v. 27).

There are seven life lessons that we can distill fromthis astounding miracle:

1. Sometimes the Lord delays His answers toprayer to show more of His glory through muchgreater works. God’s purpose was to glorify HisSon (v. 4) and to cause the disciples to grow intheir faith (v. 15). When God is silent in anygiven situation, we should realize that He istrying to bring us to a greater understanding ofHimself, and fulfill His purpose in our lives.

2. God’s timing to accomplish His purpose isperfect! The fact that Lazarus had been deadfor four days is significant, since early rabbinic

Be Engaged inMentoring,Baptizing &Teaching Others

sources suggested theJews believed the soulhovered near the bodyof the deceased forthree days (LeviticusRabbah 18.1). Thereshould be no doubt inanyone’s mind thatGod has indeed performed a great miracle sothat He alone receives the glory!

3. Bad things may sometimes happen to goodpeople as well. Both Mary and Martha sharedthe belief that had Jesus been there Lazaruswould not have died (vv. 21, 32). However,Lazarus did not become sick (v. 3) and die (v.14) because he had done something wrong butthat “the works of God should be revealed”(9:3) through him (12:9). Today, God wants touse us as His witness to reveal His power toothers whose eyes are blinded by Satan (2 Cor.4:4).

4. God cares and shares in our sorrow. Jesus weptat the tomb of Lazarus (v. 35) revealing howmuch He cared and loved him. Our tears of painattract God’s loving kindness and tender caredue to which He weeps with us (v. 33). Godwill comfort us when we mourn (Matt. 5:4) sothat we can turn around and comfort others intheir pain and suffering (2 Cor. 1:3-4).

5. We should be thankful to God in the midst ofour troubles. In the midst of His sorrow, Jesus

CHRISTMAS

One more Christmas season has come. Christmas is all about Christ.Christmas reminds us the creation, incarnation transformation and

consummation. First of all, we must believe that man is not evolvedfrom any lower beings but it is God who created man and woman in hisown image. (Gen 1:27). The second greatest truth is the incarnation ofGod in Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ was supernatural. And the angelGabriel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and thepower of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore, also that HolyOne who is to be born will be called the son of God.” What a celebrationwhen the child Jesus was born! He became the central figure of humanhistory, the only redeemer of the human race.

Jesus Christ became the greatest transformer of mankind. He bledand died on the cross of Calvary and He rose again on the third day togive mankind a second birth. Those who believe in His atonement andresurrection will be given salvation. How amazing is God’s transformingpower through His son Jesus Christ. He is able to change any scarletsinner into a saint. Creation, incarnation, transformation and finallythere is consummation. The second coming of Christ will be the greatestevent in world history. There are about 1845 references of His return inthe Bible. He is coming to rapture those who are waiting for Hisappearance and whose names are written in the Book of Life. This isthe consummation. Christmas season is the finest time to think of themeaning of life because the whole world is saturated with the song, story and message of the Saviour. What you will do with Jesus Christwill determine your destiny.

PERFECT PICTURE

“What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter”- (John 13:7)

Here on earth, with ever so many limitations, our knowledge whatsoever is partial. Weperceive only very little and conceive even lesser. We’ve only a very vague view of God’sdealings. We see only half completed, (half baked?) half developed plans. The full picture willstand out in fair and graceful proportions only in eternity. Once, when an artist was painting thepicture of a young lad in his studio, the boy got bored at the silly sketches on the canvas. It wasjust some drawings here and there with no specific shape at all. The boy expressed hisdissatisfaction and irritation. But the painter tried to pacify him by saying thus: “stay cool, I’monly working on your portrait”. Only if we wait till the perfect picture is finished, we’ll be ableto see its beauty.

Even the most attractive natural scenes are painted by some trivial sketches here and there,at first. By and by, we see summer smile upon it, night sprangles its feathery foliage with dewdrops, the birds nestle on its branches and so on…. It is just the same in our life also. “Allthings work together for good….” In Jeremiah 29:11, we read: “For I know the thoughts that Ithink toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expectedend”.

We feel sad when the cedar tree which stood in its majesty in nature’s sanctuary succumb tothe woodman’s stroke. We see the axe making its first gash on its trunk, then the noble limbsstripped of their branches and at last the tree coming to a crash to the ground! We may exclaimagainst the wanton destruction and demolition of this proud pillar in the temple of nature. Some may bewail like the Shakespearean Character:

“As flies to wanton boys are we to gods,

They kill us for their sport…”

Of course we may be tempted to doubt the purpose behind each and every pain……

But just wait a little. Watch the wood while the workman launch it down the mountain sideand at last behold it as a glorious polished beam in the temple of God. How many of us are likethis Cedar! When the axe struck us, we found no reason for such mysterious dealings. But themaster carpenter and sculptor had a noble plan to set us as everlasting pillars. Yes, the perfectpicture is yet to emerge.

thanked His Father for having heard His prayereven before performing the miracle that causedjoy to abound. Real joy comes from a heart ofthanksgiving that should be unrelated to ourcircumstances. We will be joyful when werealize that everything happening in our liveswill work together for our ultimate good only(Rom. 8:28).

6. The voice of Jesus is sufficient to raise the deadback to life. Augustine once said that if Jesushad not designated Lazarus by name, all thegraves would have been emptied at Hiscommand (5:28). One day in the near futurewhen Jesus comes back, His shout will raiseall the dead in Christ to rise up and meet Himin the air (1 Thess. 4:16).

7. When Jesus raises sinners to life, we areresponsible to remove their ‘grave clothes’.

Even today, Jesus is calling the spiritually deadin order to raise them to spiritual life (Eph. 2:5-6; 2 Cor. 5:17). However, they are still boundby the grave clothes of the world. They cannotwork because their hands are bound, theycannot walk because their feet are bound, andthey cannot witness because their mouths arebound. Jesus gives us the task of removing thestones of stumbling, and of unwinding the graveclothes of prejudice and superstition.

Let us always remember that we are entrusted withthe responsibility of making “disciples of all thenations, baptizing them in the name of the Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching themto observe all things” that Jesus has commanded us(Matt. 28:19-20). Are we fulfilling ourresponsibilities? Are we doing our part after Goddoes His part in raising spiritually dead people tolife? Are we engaged in mentoring, baptizing andteaching others today?

ICPF Kolkata Chapter conducted an EvangelisticCamp from 15th to 18th October 2013 atMonobitan, Kolkata. Ninety delegates werepresent and the Camp was inaugurated by Dr. K.P.John, CGPF president.

At one point of time I was almost to cancel thecamp due to bad weather conditions. There washeavy shower and rushing wind due to cyclonicdepression throughout West Bengal from 10th to15th October 2013 and our camp site was underwater. But God answers the prayer. He did amiracle for us that though there was rain till latemorning of the starting day of our camp but therewas no rain during the entire camp days. In thebeginning, we were also disappointed andstruggled to raise funds but God opened His waysand provided all our needs. Let His name alonebe glorified. The students enjoyed a homelyatmosphere throughout the camp.

Pr. Finny John (Oasis Ministry), Pr. BlessonVarghese (Gujrat), Dr. K.P. John, Evg. Joseph Joyand Evg. Soumitra Dey (all from Kolkata),ministered in the camp. The theme was “100%LOVE”. The sessions were conducted in asystematic way. Word of God brought a powerfulimpact on the participants. Many of them felt thatthey haven’t heard such a teaching before. Thetopics covered during the camp were:“Repentance, Salvation, Water Baptism, Teen-ageIssues, Holy Living and Mission Challenge etc.We appreciate all the resource persons for theircontribution and commitment.

The worship sessions were led by ANGELOS(Delhi). It was a blessing since all were touchedby the Lord. My humble request to you is to pleasepray for them so that God can use them in a mightyway.

I thank all our CGPF Members and the donorsfor their full hearted contribution and support. Imust appreciate the work of the student councilwho really worked hard to organize this camp. Itwas not otherwise possible to conduct the same.God is faithful to meet all our needs for He is“Jehovah Jairah”. Please up-hold this ministry inyour prayers. May the Lord bless all of you.
