Allison Shaver
I graduated from Iowa State
with a degree in Industrial
Engineering in 2010 and I have
been working with UPS in
Minneapolis since then. I have
held various roles in operations
improvement, work
measurement and planning
within the Industrial Engineering department. I was very involved with our IIE
student chapter at Iowa State and I am excited to be a part of the IIE Twin Cities
Board of Directors and be more involved with the Twin Cities chapter! Outside of
work I like to swim, read and work on the many projects I have pinned on
Pinterest. I also love to bake any kind of sweets . . . especially cupcakes!
Student Scholarship Winners
IIE Twin Cities feels that students are a vital part of the growth and activity within the Industrial
Engineering profession. To foster this growth, there were two student scholarships awarded for this
year totaling $500.00. The intent of the IIE Twin Cities scholarship program is to recognize Industrial
Engineering students who have contributed to the growth and activity of the IE profession or their
Student IIE Chapter and have promoted Industrial Engineering within their school or community.
The winners are listed below, but all of the candidates showed
great leadership skills and a strong dedication to IIE. The scholarships
were available to all IE students in Region 6.
Andrew Kerr Senior, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Nachiketa Pai Sophomore, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Modernistic Tour, June 2014
Their Director of Sales conducted an
outstanding company overview
presentation illustrating the essence of
digital and silk screen printing technologies.
Then the President of Modernistic gave a
brief background of the company’s history
and vision. Both gentlemen gave the group
an extensive plant tour, which included the
digital printing process, silk screen
technology, die cutting process,
art/computer graphics lab, assembly
services and pack out.
The event wrapped up with Q&A session
and a social hour at local Stillwater
establishment after another successful IIE
event.
Chapter Activity Report
Year End Summary
5
As 2014 wraps up many of us are reviewing the year and comparing activities and achievements
against goals and plans, both personally and professionally. IIE Twin Cities is no different. At the
beginning of each year, the Board of Directors creates a plan with goals on both a strategic and
tactical level. In the end, both the chapter and the newsletter are eligible to be evaluated against a
set of National IIE standards. While racing to the end of the year, the Board Members are checking
our list (twice, of course) and trying to identify and compensate for any gaps. Following are some
notes on areas of focus for the 2014 IIE Twin Cities Board of Directors.
Activities in this area continue to be strong for all ages and are a high-priority personal endeavor for multiple IIE Board Members.
• YOUTH ACTIVITIES – Two sessions of “Brilliant Bracelets” were hosted to introduce children from ages 10-14 to Industrial Engineering as
a profession and what we love about it. Members also chose to volunteer in local science fairs and museum activities geared toward STEM
and youth. All of these opportunities are as a result of a larger planning endeavor by another organization and we thank them collectively
for their efforts.
• STUDENT CHAPTERS - Board Member Ryan Adams has been working all year to establish regular and open communication with a
number of Student Chapters in colleges in surrounding states. As a result, the recent networking event was expanded this year to include
participation from more than one college. In addition, two potential new Student Chapters are in the works in the Twin Cities area.
• FINANCIAL SUPPORT – IIE Twin Cities provides student scholarships and support of the IIE Student Chapter activities such as the Regional
Student Conference held each spring.
IIE Twin Cities continues to host a variety of events for our members and general distribution of local IEs. IIE Twin Cities’ goal is to continue
to find new industries, topics, collaborations and opportunities for giving back and your suggestions are always welcome!
• ACTIVITIES – These ranged from raising money to support IIE Twin Cities itself (Bean Bag Tournament), collecting donations for Toys for
Tots, tours at Caterpillar, UPS, HEI and Modernistic, a joint speaker event with ASQ and a day long workshop on Standard Work for Leaders.
• RESULTS – Our event attendance and surveys are logged and evaluated to aid in both our national ranking and our own local guidance for
future events . . . yes, we really do read them!
We continue to try to find the delicate balance that most organizations strive for, how to provide information that you want in a format
that is easy to quickly comprehend without overdoing the frequency or the verbiage.
• NEWSLETTERS AND EMAIL – Updates on the chapter and reminders on the status of membership are standard.
• EVENT INVITATIONS - This year we switched from Evite to Eventbrite due to its additional capabilities in collaborating with our other
media formats.
• SOCIAL MEDIA – This area continues to be an exercise in exploration as we evaluate, refine and attempt to grow our presence in the form
of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter activities and followers.
• WEBSITE - IIETwinCites.org is the place you can always go to find it all!

6 CAT Tour, September 2014
Past Event Recap
Traditionally, there has been an annual fall visit in place between the IIE Twin Cities professional
chapter and North Dakota State University student chapter. This year marked the first time that
IIE Twin Cities opened up the fall visit to other student chapters within the region.
The day started early with the first tour at 8:30am at GE Power and Water in Minnetonka, MN.
The students were able to take a look at operations within the water treatment, wastewater
treatment and process system solutions division to gain a better understanding of Industrial
Engineering roles in the water treatment industry.
Upon leaving GE, the students attended a tour at Boston Scientific in Maple Grove, MN where
they learned about the Interventional Cardiology and Peripheral Intervention divisions of the
medical device manufacturer. The tour gave insight to different career paths including both
Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering within the medical device industry.
The third and final tour was hosted by Stratasys, a manufacturer of 3D printing equipment and
materials that create physical objects directly from digital data. Its systems range from affordable
desktop 3D printers to large, advanced 3D production systems, making 3D printing more
accessible than ever and giving the students a perspective of newer technology within the
manufacturing industry.
An evening event held at Dave & Busters in Maple Grove that evening included presentations by
IIE Twin Cities Board Members, Sean Dveris, Jeromy Knapp and Ryan Adams. The students
engaged in a Q&A session with the active board members that were in attendance and joined in
on the action with a team competition in the game area. The tours and evening event had
members representing three total schools within the region and gave everyone a chance to
network with professionals in the Minneapolis area.
Past Event Recap IIE/Student Chapter Joint Networking Event, November 2014
In mid-September over 20 members of IIE Twin Cities attended the CAT Global Paving Product
Manufacturing facility tour in Maple Grove, MN. The tour consisted of an office overview of CAT’s
LEAN initiative, an overview of their best practices, a video explaining their impressive product
line and a very informative facility tour of their paving machine assembly lines. They also
explained the numerous roles of Industrial Engineers in their workplace.
The tour provided visibility into CAT’s well run visual management system
including shadow boards, metric boards and material management
kanbans. After the tour, the group joined CAT tour guides on for happy
hour and networking. We thank the CAT staff for their well guided tour and
multiple presenters. It is very apparent CAT takes pride in their work!
