What a great summer! IIE was busy with many events:

• Brilliant Bracelets engineering workshop in

partnership with the Society of Women

Engineers (SWE) and Girl Scouts

• Our highest attended ever Annual Bean Bag

Tournament and BBQ

• Industry connecting events at Modernistic

printing, Seagate and CAT

This fall and winter IIE has a great lineup of tours and

networking in conjunction with student chapters from

our region. I hope you are able to join us at one of our

last two events in 2014.

I would like to personally thank our event hosts for

providing quality tours this past year. They have been

very supportive of our chapter by donating their time

and effort. I would also like to thank our events

directors, Kayla Bosak and Jeff Meyer-Quarberg, for

their dedication and tireless work to schedule these

events.

Sean Dveris, IIE Twin Cities President.

Chapter Activity Report

Focus On: Growth and Retention: What does this mean to IIE Twin Cities?

5

There is no shortage of professional development and networking opportunities out there to entice

your participation, especially as social media continues to increase the ability to market something

new. When working to retain and grow membership and participation, this is just one challenge that

IIE chapters face. You may ask, “What’s an organization to do?!”

Collaboration IIE Twin Cities also strives to

support and be involved with

other professional

organizations. Society of

Women Engineers (SWE),

American Society of Quality

(ASQ) and Association for

Manufacturing Excellence

(AME) are some of the groups

that we have collaborated

with in recent years. As

Industrial Engineers we often

touch every part of the

process and these connections

can be invaluable. This may

also spark an interest in IIE

amongst a new audience - you

don’t have to be an IE to

benefit from the

methodologies and

experience!

Variety IIE Twin Cities strives to offer a wide range of activities to bring a little something to everyone.

Our strategic plan defines eight as the minimum number of “diverse value-driven events”. Some of

these events are recurring favorites: Bean Bag Tournament and BBQ, November Student

Networking and December Social. Others are a result of the networking that occurs in our daily

lives as Industrial Engineers. New Board members often bring new tour options. A board member

may meet another professional whose endeavors overlap or influence us as IEs (ergonomics

research, quality program deployment or traffic engineering) and then arrange to have them

speak. Participants at an IIE Twin Cities event often suggest or request a specific topic or tour or

even offer to host IIE at his/her own employer.

Marketing

The more opportunities we have to look good, the more likely we are to draw an audience.

Therefore, in recent years, IIE Twin Cities Board of Directors has worked to better utilize media

options. This year, for example:

- Newsletter Director, Jenna Weiland, helped the Board of Directors to make this newsletter

valuable, informative and “easy on the eyes”

- This year Social Media Director, Britta Rowan, initiated a blog on the National IIE website to

share some of our activities

- Chapter members have also helped to make LinkedIn a source for local discussion, job

opportunities and networking in general

- The IIE Twin Cities website was updated in recent years and Webmaster, Bree Bowersox, can

now more easily adapt and update appearance and content

In addition, Board Members traveled to the Regional Student Conference and also established a

specific roll for Student Outreach (thank you to Ryan Adams for establishing and maintaining

communications with a variety of new educational institutions). Finally, every event should be

something to talk about because, as they say, word of mouth is the best advertising!

6 Annual Bean Bag Tournament and BBQ, July 2014 Past Event Recap

The annual IIE Twin Cities Bean Bag Tournament BBQ continues to be one of our most successful

of the year. Apparently IEs enjoy beverages, grilling, bean bags, and networking on beautiful July

days! Past President, Eric Situmbeko, worked tirelessly behind the grill to cook up some mean

burgers and brats. Student Liaison, Ryan Adams, brought a photo booth with props and folks

were able to get goofy for the camera! Thank you to everyone who came and took part in the

fun. Congratulations to Josh Gravelink and Kyle Schroeder for winning the Bean Bag tournament

this year and to John Spriggs and Matt Ladhoff for being runner’s up!

After the presentation we toured the plant

and saw firsthand how IEs at Seagate use

tools such as simulation, Andon and Lean

Manufacturing to optimize lead time. The

amount of space and money tied up in capital

equipment makes it important to optimize

scheduling and uptime. After the tour we had

a great happy hour and networking at Joe

Sensor’s. Thanks, Seagate, for hosting a very

informative tour!

In September, Seagate hosted a fabulous

tour of their wafer manufacturing facility in

Bloomington where they make heads/data

readers for hard drives. The tour began with

an overview of Seagate, hard drive global

supply chain, the Bloomington facility and IE

roles within the company. The IE group at

Seagate is an extremely passionate and

energized group. It was fascinating to hear

and see the tools they use and how they

navigate through the evolving data storage

landscape.

What is IIE?

IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering

profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,

research and development of industrial engineering.

With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IIE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-

changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes undergraduate and graduate students, engineering

practitioners and consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and engineers in education,

research and government.

What is IIE Twin Cities?

The IIE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to

collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and

professionals working in IE related functions.

We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,

process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming

involved with several student IIE chapters.
