Dear Presidents,

It is that very important time of year again!

We welcome you and your society members to join us for your 2017 District 15 Annual General Meeting.

This year it will be held on Saturday, April 22nd, at the Thornhill United Church, hosted by the Thornhill Garden &

Horticultural Society. Your District AGM is the opportunity to mingle and chat with fellow gardeners and horticultural society members from across the District.

The theme for this year’s event is “Thornhill – Preserving our Heritage and Planting for our Future.”

Our presenter will be Marion Jarvie and her topic will be “A Garden in Thornhill”. Marion is a Past President of the Thornhill Hort and is a renowned speaker and educator at home and abroad.

You will readily see, hear, and feel Marion’s passion as she speaks about her garden (what we call her mini “TBG” – Thornhill Botanical Garden) which she has continually and devotedly developed for over 50 years.

The complete Flower Show Schedule is included in this package together with all requirements for entries, including Convenor and Pre-Registration information. Please encourage your members to enter the show. We look forward to seeing

amazing designs and horticultural entries again this year. It is encouraging to your members if you have copies of the

Flower Show Schedule and entry forms available at your meetings. This year we have returned to a People’s Choice Photography category. A reminder to everyone to bring their photos would be great.

Please remember to bring your banner with its stand to display during the meeting. A table will be available to place all and any flyers for upcoming events that you may have to share with fellow society members. This material should be placed on

this table only.

All societies are asked to bring a door prize with a value of $25.00 to $30.00. Every registered member will receive a draw

ticket in their package for these gifts. We encourage you to participate in this tradition. Please place a card on the gift to indicate the Society it is from. Thank you in advance, in case it gets missed on the day.

The meeting starts at 9:45 am sharp and will adjourn as close to 3:00 pm as possible. Parking is free. A map showing the location and directions is included in this package.

The registration for the day will be $30.00 per person. This fee will include a Continental Breakfast, Morning Coffee break

and Lunch with dessert. You will notice that we have managed to maintain the cost of registration. This is thanks to the incredible response to our yearly Silent Auction and Raffle which makes it possible to expense any overrun from the District reserve.

Please send one registration form per society with the total number of members attending, along with one cheque covering

ALL delegates of your Society attending. We are not able to accept individual registrations via email or by phone. All

registrations must include payment. Make cheques payable to O.H.A District 15. Deadline to register is April 3, 2017.

The Thornhill Garden & Horticultural Society continues to carry on the vision that a few gardeners had at its first meeting in 1914, that of an organization which would promote, and contribute to, the beautification of the Thornhill community. Our Society continues to pursue activities and programmes which ensure that we remain relevant and resourceful in an ever-changing time and climate. Our activities include:

Planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, and flowers at several community locations. These include 2 Heritage sites i.e. Percy Bone Parkette in Thornhill Park and the Evergreen Thornhill Hospice which is located at the John Charlton Heritage House. In 2017, as per a request from the Thornhill Heritage Foundation (THF), we will begin a 3 – 5 year project, working with members of the THF, to restore the gardens at the Robert West Heritage House.

Holding 9 monthly meetings with guest speakers (3rd Wednesday of each month) and 6 flower shows (May to October) where our members can share ideas, broaden their knowledge and find answers to their gardening questions.

Having 2 community plant sales (May and September) and a booth at the Thornhill Village Festival in September. Sponsoring garden recognition programmes and an annual Garden Tour in July. Distributing a monthly newsletter to our members. Giving support to the Thornhill United Church community garden group and to the Richard A. Jarrell Memorial Garden at the

Thornhill Village Library (another Heritage site). Providing bursaries (2) to Thornhill students who are enrolled in post- secondary studies related to horticulture. Facilitating workshops for children enrolled in the summer recreation programmes at the Thornhill Community Centre and

contributing to the Toronto Botanical Garden’s summer “Green Explorers” activities which provides gardening opportunities to children living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Preserving Thornhill’s Heritage

The Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill (SPOHT) was founded in 1974, following the

rapid growth of this once rural community. (Innumerable contributing factors have caused many

changes in Thornhill’s landscape since it was founded in 1794.)

SPOHT’s objectives include “the preservation of the surviving remnants of 19th Century and early

20th Century Thornhill as well as trees, water courses, parks, streetscapes and buildings which lend

special character to the community”. There are a number of activities that members are involved in,

including the “Historic Plaque” project, diverse educational opportunities and the organizing of the

annual Thornhill Village Festival.

Thornhill is administered by 2 municipalities i.e. the City of Vaughan and the City of Markham as

Yonge St. is where both cities’ boundaries meet in Thornhill. Mutually, these cities have designated

Thornhill / Markham and Thornhill / Vaughan as Heritage Conservation Districts.

Thanks to the efforts of SPOHT, elected officials and several other like-minded community groups

and individuals, the preservation of Thornhill’s history and heritage will be continually considered

as further development occurs in our community.

Thus our Society’s theme for the 2017 District 15 AGM –

“Thornhill – Preserving our Heritage and Planting for our Future”.
