Onehunga Security Update Satia’s crime–busting successes with CCTVs

Onehunga Business Association’s Icon Security Guard, Satia Sami, has become an expert at using Onehunga’s network of 23 CCTVs, and spotting trouble! Satia spends around 80% of her time actively monitoring the security cameras, which are strategically placed to monitor the town centre’s known trouble spots. After nine months working for Onehunga Business Association, Satia is familiar with many of the local trouble-makers and their

favourite hang-outs. She’s quick to spot trouble brewing and has a valuable knack for recognising suspicious behaviour and when things are not as they should be on the street. In the past two weeks, Satia impressed Police with some great proactive pick-ups. Here are three examples where Satia had CCTV camera footage of offenders ready for Police when they visited the OBA’s office: Stolen car: Police came to the OBA office seeking evidence of suspects in possession of a vehicle stolen in Onehunga a few days earlier. The day before, Satia had seen a few known troublemakers driving (joy-riding, as it happened) a smart car around Onehunga town centre. As it was unlikely the offenders had the means to own such a car, she had taken details of the car, its registration number and the people in it. Police were amazed and very pleased when Satia produced the photos

Police needed to confirm the identities of the car thieves. Drugs: Satia spotted local youths taking illegal substances in a local car park. Photos of the offenders were passed on to Police, who will be following up on the matter. Minors drinking alcohol: Satia had been observing a person acting suspiciously on several occasions, purchasing alcohol and then bringing it to a group of minors. Police and the appropriate agencies were informed about this behaviour and are taking action.

Credit Card Surcharges a big turn-off for Customers 90% of customers would shop elsewhere New Zealand shoppers would rather leave their favourite store than pay a credit card surcharge according to a recent retail survey. The survey, commissioned by a public relations agency, investigated the habits of Kiwi consumers and their perceptions of having to pay additional credit card surcharges. The research revealed that 90% of customers would stop shopping at their regular store if a 3% credit card surcharge was added to their purchase. Some merchants began introducing the surcharge two years ago after credit card companies removed existing restrictions. 88% of survey respondents believed that retailers did not adequately communicate enough information about the add-on fee to customers. Could your business cope with a disaster? Study shows many businesses don’t have plans for a crisis Massey University’s annual survey of small and medium-sized businesses, BusinesSMEasure, found a high degree of vulnerability and a lack of formal crisis planning amongst small businesses across New Zealand. SMEs, as defined in the survey, are businesses with fewer than 100 employees. Key BusinesSMEasure findings include:

• 43% of SMEs surveyed had experienced a crisis in the past five years. • Only one-third of firms responded to the most recent serious crisis in a resilient manner. • Vulnerability increases if the crisis is caused by a natural disaster, rather than an internal crisis. • Less than 10% of SMEs have a formal written crisis management plan and of these, less than half had tested their plan in practice. • A formal written crisis management plan does not necessarily make a company more resilient; experience in dealing with the consequences of a crisis is more important. • Canterbury SMEs that are still in business after the earthquakes have an increased capability to adapt to changes in the business environment. Why you should do more than think about Continuity Planning Following the Christchurch earthquake, Parnell-based Cornwall Strategic released a free Business Continuity Planning tool. It’s a plan that explains how you will stay in business in the event of a significant business disruption. If you haven’t got a plan in place already, this is a good place to start! (Find this tool and a guide to it here: http://is.gd/CornwallStrategic). As Cornwall Strategic explains: Business Continuity Planning is an essential part of running any organisation that takes its business and its clients seriously. While the earthquakes in Christchurch are obviously extreme examples of significant business disruptions, have you considered what you/ your business would do in the event of any of these events: • Earthquake, flood or other natural disaster • The sudden loss of key assets, staff, supplier(s) or customer(s) • A pandemic or other city wide or national emergency • The sudden loss of business information - through theft, corruption or other activity

The benefits of Business Continuity Planning include: • Survival - The difference between coping with a disaster and complete organisational loss. • Costs - Insurance is an important aspect of addressing business risk; but it costs. A robust business continuity plan will demonstrate your commitment to managing risk and your insurer should consider this when calculating your insurance premiums.

• Marketing - Having a business continuity plan will give you the edge over your competitors. It shows your commitment to deliver no matter what. • Morale - Your staff are your greatest asset. Let them know that you know that. • Value - A business that can cope under any circumstances is more valuable and reliable investment, stakeholder, customer and supplier. • Efficiency - Business continuity analysis reveals inefficiencies Source: Cornwall Strategic Planning, www.cornwallstrategic.com

Dolphin Theatre seeks help for new extension

Donations of cash, materials and furnishings sought Take a drive down Spring Street and observe the exciting development at the Dolphin Theatre

(at number 12). Onehunga’s very active community theatre has close to a thousand members and puts on six shows a year, each of which runs for a three-week season. This February, Dolphin Theatre celebrated dual milestones with its 50th anniversary coinciding with the premier of its 250th show, The Mousetrap. The Theatre is now preparing for its next 50 years with the addition of extra space. The project has involved moving the Rehearsal Hall and adding a significant extension between the Hall and Theatre and along the side. The new addition has been made possible by very generous grants from ASB Community Trust, Lotteries Grant Board and The Lion Foundation, along with frugal saving by Dolphin Theatre’s management. Because they are dealing with an old building, further funding is required to complete the addition and fit out. Project Manager John Kelleher is appealing to local businesses for donations of cash, materials and furnishings.
