Did You Know?

Camping became a cornerstone of YMCA programming in 1885 when the YMCA started Camp Dudley, America’s first

known summer camp program, at Orange Lake, N.Y. The longest continually operat-ing camp, its aim was to provide children with a positive developmental experience

through making new friends, building

confidence and growing in self-reliance.

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: Vaughn Phillips aka DJ V Boy

North Port’s very own, Vaughn Phillips has been active in the North Port YMCA programs including Swim Team, Kids Club Aftercare, and summer camp. Besides being a student here in town, Vaughn has a side job that most kids his age have not experienced. More profes-sionally known as DJ V Boy, Vaughn found his passion for BPM mixing at the tender age of nine.

Now a mature 3 years older, he is sporting his own mixing board and speakers and taking his soon to be high energy pop and electro BPM to the masses. DJ’ing is not your typical 6th grade extracurricular activity, but after hanging with an international DJ in the summer of 2012, DJ V Boy found his calling. On his short list he’s mastering 123-126 BPM mixing, perfecting his stage show and learning how to deal with the paparazzi.

Diabetes is a serious condition that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabe-tes. Currently, diabetes affects more than 29 million people.

Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. More than 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes.

Prediabetes may be reversible; diabetes has no cure.

Chances are you know at least one person with diabetes and the likeli-hood that you know one of the 86 million Americans with prediabetes is even greater. Only about 9 million people know they have prediabetes, a potentially reversible condition.

November was National Diabetes Awareness Month and together we still can help ONE MILLION MORE adults learn their risk.
