Scam Alert We have heard there is a possible new scam going around. People receive a phone call stating that their telecommunications cost will be increasing. If you respond in a positive way this may mean you have just agreed to change suppliers. Questions to ask anyone phoning – where are they from? How do they know what your telecommunications bill is and who is your provider? Be wary of any phone calls you are uncertain of who you are speaking to and what they are wanting. Diesel Theft on Orpheus Drive

Diesel has been siphoned from the diggers used in the foreshore restoration on Orpheus Drive. If you notice anything suspicious going on down there, call 111 immediately.

Report any graffiti to us

We’ve been out doing our regular graffiti sweep and have noticed there has been large amounts of tagging in alley-ways, on park benches, on Onehunga and bus signage. Even though some of the tags are quite small, it’s vital we nip it in the bud before it becomes something bigger. If you spot graffiti, please let us know immediately so we can get it removed and ensure Onehunga is well presented to visitors.

OBA makes progress with street signage One sandwich board per business permitted

Over the last few months, OBA Town Manager Amanda Kinzett has been actively lobbying on your behalf for a positive outcome to the restriction of street signage imposed by Auckland Council. The use of sandwich boards is dependent on the Unitary Plan, which will be ready for public consultation at the end of March. However, in the interim, we are pleased to inform you that Auckland Council has listened to our concerns and has agreed to use discretion when dealing with sandwich boards in the Onehunga area and apply the general rules for their use outside of the

Special Character areas. This means that businesses are able to use one sandwich board per business but it cannot cause any obstruction on the foothpath. If the sandwich board is causing an obstruction then the property owner will be required to remove it but if used in a safe and responsible way, the Council will not take any action. We understand street signage is an important driver of business for many of you and thank you for

your patience as we work through your concerns with Council. Please let us know if you would like

further information or assistance.

Lunar New Year celebrations in Onehunga Main celebration this Saturday 16 February Zodiac Explorer’s Challenge Thanks to the businesses who have participated in the Zodiac Explorer challenge over the last week. Kids have enjoyed searching for the Chinese symbols and we’ve had a great number of entries. Entries will be drawn at our offices at 1.00pm on Tuesday 19 February. What’s happening on Saturday 16 February Onehunga Library is holding a Lunar New Year story time at 10.30am followed by entertainment until 1.30pm including traditional performances.

There will also be games and crafts for kids in the grounds of St. Peter’s Church from 11.00am. At 1.30pm, you can experience the spectacular sight of a Lion Dance on Onehunga Mall, as the lion blesses businesses for the Year of the Snake. We will also be delivering lucky ‘red packets’ leading up to Saturday 16 February. Shops who want to be blessed by the lion should place a donation in their red packet and tape it above their doorway from 1.30pm — just before the lion dancers come around. We will also bring additional envelopes on the day just before the Lion Dance.
