Background

Challenge

According to Josh Saldivar, plamanager for the Eaton PMC-Hydraulics Operations in EdenPrairie, Minnesota, the groupalso prides itself on routinelymonitoring its own resources,and then doing something aboit to make it better.

We do a good amount ofgrinding work here in the makof spools and sleeves forhydraulic steering units and ouChar-Lynn line of motors to githe components a smooth

finish, says Saldivar. Thatprocess requires a filtrationsystem where coolant is usedhelp remove some of thegrindings, which we call swarf

Over time, that swarf beginsaccumulate at the bottom of omachining tanks. But it doesnjust sit there; it also makes thcoolant less effective. As theswarf continues to build up, whave to shut our machinesdown, shovel it out of there, athen refill the machines withmore coolant.

Time-consuming, labor intensand costly, Saldivar decided itwas time to implement someimprovements.

He did not have to look veryfar for help. The Eaton filtrationgroup, at the time, waspreparing to launch their newFloWash mobile shop floorfiltration system.

Rick Jacobs, president ofEaton's Filtration Division, wasvisiting Saldivars plant andasked him if he would be willingto take a look at the newproduct.

We were discussingopportunities, adds Saldivar,and coolant filtration wasidentified as a great opportunity.

The flexible FloWash system canoperate in-line or as a stand-alone portable system. Capableof handling up to 45 gallons perminute of machining coolant, oil,water, and other liquids, it allowsfor rejuvenating fluids anywherein a plant.

Saldivar decided to give it a try.

Results

The cart is now being used onnine different machines and ismoving through the plant on arotational basis, adds Saldivar.Our initial estimate on costsavings is about $12,000 peryear. Thats based on significantlyreducing the filter paper thatwe were using, and also thecost savings associated withnot having to clean the tanksas often.
