Jeff “Goose” Giesen will mark his fourth season as the head women’s hockey coach at St. Cloud State University in

2009-10. A native of Blaine, Minn., Giesen is the third head coach since the inception of the women’s program in 1998 and has accumulated an all-time record of 45-51-16 in three seasons along with a 29-43-12 mark in the ever grueling Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Jennifer Kranz and Jason Johnson return to the Husky staff as assistants to Coach Giesen. Kranz is in her fourth season as an assistant coach for SCSU and prior to joining the Husky staff in 2006, she served as the assistant girls’ prep hockey coach at Shat-tuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., since 2004. At SCSU, Kranz’s responsibilities include recruiting, working with the forwards and monitoring team academics. Johnson joined the SCSU hockey staff in 2007-08 after serving as an assistant men’s hockey coach at nearby Saint John’s University from 2003-07. Johnson’s responsibilities include recruiting, video breakdown and working with the defensemen. Felicia Nelson, SCSU’s senior forward, was named the team captain after serving as an alternate team captain in 2008-09. The St. Paul native played in 33 games last season and scored 21 points (3g,13a). The trio of se-niors Danielle Hirsch, Caitlin Hogan and Holly Roberts were all named alternate captains for the upcoming season. St. Cloud State returns eight forwards this year after losing some of their top scorers from a year ago. Caitlin Hogan is the Huskies’ returning leader scorer after charting 31 points (14g,17a) during her junior stint. Team captain Felicia Nelson and Holly Roberts are also back for their senior debuts, as Nelson finished last season with 21 points (8g,13a) and Roberts posted nine goals and 11 helpers on the year.

Also returning to the forward core group is Meaghan Pezon, Katie Kemmerer, Brittany Toor, Ashlan Lambert, Alecia Anderson and Courtney Josefson. Danielle Hirsch leads the helm at the blue line in 2009-10 after setting a Husky single season record for defenseman assists with 18 last season, which also led the team in that category. The WCHA Defensive Player of the Week and Bloomington native totaled 20 points on the season (2g,18a), which proved to be a personal career season best for Hirsch. Joining Hirsch on defense this year is sophomore Jaclyn Daggit, junior Diana Karouzos and seniors Kelly Meierhofer and Jenaca Fredheim. The Huskies are happy to welcome eight new faces to the squad in 2009-10. The incoming first year players include Canada natives Katherine Allen (Red Deer, AB) and Jocelyn Zabrick (Airdrie, AB), four-time All-Conference and two-time All-State selection Kylie Lane (Roseau, MN), Minnesota’s Ms. Hockey finalist Alexandra Nelson (Andover, MN), All-State forward Callie Dahl (Stillwater, MN), Minnesota Prep Athlete of the Week Haylea Schmid (Oak Grove, MN), All-Clas-sic Lake Conference player Elizabeth Sitek (Edina, MN) and All-North Suburban Confer-ence player Lisa Martinson (St. Louis Park, MN). Ashley Nixon is back for her junior season and will lead the way in the goaltending cat-egory. As a sophomore, Nixon tallied her first career shutout in last year’s season opener at Quinnipiac on Oct. 3, 2008. A WCHA and USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week honoree, Nixon led the Huskies with a .909 saves percentage, 11 wins and three shutouts last year. Nixon is joined by sophomore net minders Tayler VanDenakker and Anna Donlan. Van Denakker made nine starts during her rookie

stint, going 4-4-1 overall and posting a team best 2.76 goals-against average. St. Cloud State will then open its regular season on Oct. 2-3, with a pair of home dates against non-conference rival Niagara University at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies will hit the road on Oct. 10-11 for the WCHA opener at Minnesota Duluth. To kick-off the New Year, the Huskies will host the Easton Holiday Classic on Jan. 2-3, at the National Hockey Center. Minnesota State and Mercyhurst will open play in the Easton Holiday Classic on Jan. 2 with a 12:07 pm game. SCSU and Providence will then square off at 3:07 pm. On Jan. 3, the Clas-sic will wrap-up with Minnesota State and Providence playing at 12:07 pm, followed by SCSU and Mercyhurst at 3:07 pm. “We have a very competitive schedule this upcoming season,” coach Jeff Giesen said. “In addition to our always tough WCHA games, we have national runner-up Mercyhurst and Hockey East power Providence competing in our Easton Holiday Showcase this season at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.”

Jeff “Goose” Giesen marks his fourth season as the head women’s hockey coach at St. Cloud State in 2009-10. A native of Blaine, Minn., Giesen is

the third coach since the inception of the women’s program in 1998 and has a record of 45-51-16 in three seasons along with a 29-43-12 mark in the WCHA. The Huskies completed their 11th season in school history in 2008-09 with a 15-18-4 overall record and fourth place WCHA finish after an 11-14-3 mark in Giesen’s third season at the helm. SCSU celebrated a Decade of Women’s Hockey on Oct. 18, 2008 in the National Hockey Center. There was an honorary drop-of-the-puck by SCSU’s first head coach Kerry Brodt-Wethington. Three former coaches and 14 alumni returned for the weekend. During the 2008-09 season, Giesen had the op-portunity to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team that won the gold medal at the 2009 IIIHF World U18 Championship in January in Fussen, Germany. He was also invited to the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge last April to serve as one of the coaches for the West team. In his second season as head coach, Giesen led the Huskies to an 18-15-5 overall record, which tied the school record for most wins in a season. He also led the Huskies to the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF for the second time in school history. The 2007-08 squad became the first team to take three-of-four points from Minnesota in a home-and-home series and SCSU went on a 12-1-2 tear from Nov. 3-Jan. 19, with a record eight-game unbeaten run (7-0-1). This past year, the SCSU team honored women and heart disease with a campaign to “Go Red” for their home game against Minnesota State in the National Hockey Center on Feb. 6, 2009. SCSU wore their red uniforms and an honorary drop-of-the-puck was made by SCSU professor Joanna Pucel, a heart disease survivor, before the start of the game. Away from the ice, Giesen has concentrated on creating strong relationships with the alumni. On Oct. 13, 2007, SCSU hosted the first Women’s Hockey Alumni Weekend. Eighteen of those former student-athletes played in the first alumni game in the NHC prior to the Gopher and Husky game. Giesen helped collaborate the “Skate for a Cure” series with MSU for the two home-and-home series last season. Both teams wore special jerseys incor-porating the color pink, in honor of breast cancer awareness. SCSU collected $1500 in proceeds, which were presented to the St. Cloud Hospital Breast Center of the Coborn’s Cancer Center.

The SCSU program has also stayed active in the community under Giesen. For six straight seasons, SCSU has toured local elementary schools over its winter break to spark community interest in women’s hockey and help teach basic hockey skills to the students. The Huskies have also offered a free youth hockey clinic the past three seasons and over 240 youth hockey girls from the state have attended. During his first year at the helm of SCSU, Giesen led the Huskies to a 12-18-7 overall record and seventh place WCHA finish at 7-16-5. The 2006-07 Huskies led the nation with seven ties and tied the Div. 1 women’s record with 10 overtime games. Prior to being named head coach at SCSU in June of 2006, Giesen served as an assistant women’s hockey coach from 2003-06, working with the defense and recruiting. He came to SCSU from Saint John’s University, where he was an assistant coach from 1992-98 and associate head coach from 1998-2003. The Johnnies won MIAC titles in 1996, 1997 and 2003 as well as playoff titles and made Div. III national tournament appearances in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003. Giesen has also worked extensively with the USA Hockey Development program, most recently last summer at the girls’ 16 camp in St. Cloud and the girls’ 17/18 camp in Lake Placid. In 2005, Giesen served as the assistant coach for the women’s WCHA All-Stars who played against the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team at both Xcel Energy Center and in Duluth. A 1993 graduate of SCSU, Giesen and his wife Karla reside in St. Cloud with their daughters Delaney and Maleah.

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team and 2009 national champions will return a new team for

the 2009-10 season. With head coach Mark Johnson taking a year off to guide the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team, assistant coach Tracey DeKeyser steps in to lead the defending champs. DeKeyser is no stranger to the program, she has been with UW since its inception and has been at the helm of the program twice before as a co-coach with former assistant Dan Koch. Assisting DeKeyser this season will be a pair of former UW hockey standouts in Jackie Friesen and Peter Johnson. Three seniors will lead the UW squad, Jas-mine Giles will be the team captain and will be assisted by Kyla Sanders and Emily Kranz. All three Badgers are first-time captains but have plenty of experience, suiting up for every game in their three-year career. With it being an Olympic year, junior Hilary Knight and senior Meghan Duggan will sit out a season to train for the 2010 Olympic Team. Knight led the nation in goals and points while setting three new UW season records with 83 points, 45 goals and 16 power-play goals in her sophomore campaign. The reigning WCHA Player of the Year and first-team All-American had 24 multi-point games and finished the season ranked 10th in UW’s career points list with two years of eligibility remaining. Duggan, an All-WCHA Third Team selection and assistant captain, became UW’s all-time NCAA tournament points leader with 3-11–14 in her last three appearances. In preparation for the Olympics, USA Hockey hosted a National Festival Camp, which 11 former and current Badgers were named to the 41-player roster. Included on the roster are current student-athletes Duggan, Knight, sophomore Brooke Ammerman and incoming freshman Brianna Decker. Beyond losing Knight and Duggan, Wiscon-sin graduated six seniors from last year’s title squad that no doubt made a presence in the Badger lines. The class of 2009 brought home three NCAA titles in four years, while tallying

the most wins in the NCAA since 2005-06 with 135. The UW will replace the vacancy with nine newcomers for the 2009-10 season, includ-ing four defensemen, four forwards and a goaltender. The last three seasons the UW has had at least one Badger named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team. The Badgers return six forwards that had over 20 points last season – Brooke Ammer-man, Jasmine Giles, Mallory Deluce, Kyla Sanders, Carolyne Prevost and Kelly Nash. Ammerman, a WCHA All-Rookie Team and All-WCHA Third Team selection, earned a spot on the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF All-Tournament Team. As the team’s top returning scorer, Am-merman finished second on the team in goals and had 54 points (27g, 27a). Giles, a senior forward was also named to the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF All-Tournament Team and returns as the second leading scorer. Giles tallied 44 points for the season (16g, 29a) and is one of four seniors to lead the squad. Emily Kranz and Sanders return as senior forwards while goaltender Alannah McCready rounds out the senior class. The Wisconsin attack also welcomes four freshmen in Brianna Decker, Breann Frykas, Lauren Unser and Derya Kelter. The UW will have a young blue line in 2009-10 with no seniors, but the Badgers do return four defensemen in Brittany Haverstock, Olivia Jakiel, Malee Windmeier and Anne Dronen. Wisconsin will add depth to the blue line with Geena Prough, a transfer from Mercy-hurst and three freshmen; Alev Kelter, Saige Pacholok and Stefanie McKeough. The Badgers will be young in the goaltend-ing position, returning only McCready with experience. McCready saw action in five games last season, backing up the Patty Kazmaier Me-morial Award winner, Jessie Vetter. Competing against McCready for the starting job will be Nikki Kaasa, a redshirt freshman and incoming freshman Becca Ruegsegger. Ruegsegger joins the UW after four years at Shattuck-St. Mary’s and experience on the U.S. U-18 team.

The Kelter twins, Alev and Derya, come to UW as multi-sport athletes. They signed with soccer, which means they will miss at least one month of hockey competition. The 2009-10 schedule is highlighted by the first-ever women’s outdoor game. Wisconsin will host Bemidji State at Camp Randall Sta-dium on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Dekeyser to serve as Uw’s interim heaD coach For 2009-10

Ashton, Ont., native Tracey DeKeyser begins her 11th season at Wisconsin, and for the first time she will lead the squad while Mark Johnson takes a one-year leave to coach at the 2010 Olympics. She has been with the program since the drop of the first puck and has done everything from recruiting to co-coaching the team. The energetic DeKeyser, formally known as Cornell, came to Madison after spending the previous year as girls hockey head coach at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass. DeKeyser led Cushing to a 24-4-2 mark, the most successful season in the history of the program. Her team captured second during the regular season and advanced to the NEP-SAC Championship. Most recently, DeKeyser volunteered as a Team Leader at Canada’s Under-22 Selection Camp in August 2005.

After lifting the Wisconsin women’s hockey team to new heights, coach Mark Johnson will take a one-year sabbatical to guide the 2010

Olympic U.S. Women’s Hockey team to Vancouver. No stranger to the UW program as coach’s son (his father is legendary coach Bob Johnson), player and assistant coach, Johnson stepped into the role of head women’s hockey coach at UW beginning with the 2002-03 season, the third coach in program history. In seven seasons, Johnson and the Badgers have continued to shatter both school and national records, while being the first team ever to land in the NCAA championship game in four consecutive seasons and winning the title three times (2006, 2007, 2009). Johnson led the UW to a 34-2-5 record during the 2008-09 season, marking the third-most wins in school history. The Badgers claimed the WCHA playoff championship en route to its third national championship in four years. Under Johnson, he has led the Badgers to an 11-2 record in the NCAA Tournament which includes seven Frozen Four wins, the second-most in the event’s history. Johnson celebrated his 200th career win Sunday, Feb, 1, 2008 against OSU and leads all active women’s college-hockey coaches with a winning percentage of .815 after compiling an impressive record of 210-39-22 in his first seven years at Wisconsin. Named the 2009 WCHA co-Coach and American Hockey Coaches Association Div. 1 Coach of the Year he is now a four-time WCHA and a three-time AHCA recipient. In the same year Johnson guided goaltender Jessie Vetter to the program’s second Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top player in Div. 1 women’s ice hockey. The Badgers have reached 29 victories in each of the past four campaigns, something no other program has ever accomplished. Since the 2005–06 season, Wisconsin has recorded 135 wins, more than any other team in the nation. Named the 2003 WCHA co-Coach of the Year and one of eight finalists for the Div. 1 Coach of the Year award, Johnson guided the UW to a 22-8-5 overall and 14-6-4 WCHA record in his first season. After going 25-6-3 in 2003-04, the Badgers made history in Johnson’s third season, winning a then-program-record 28 games (28-9-1) and earning the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth. The team climbed as high as second in the national rankings by defeating then-No. 2 UMD in the WCHA

tournament semifinals and dramatically forcing overtime by scoring two goals in the final minute of regulation vs. No. 1 Minnesota in the championship game. Johnson carried the momentum into the 2005-06 campaign as Wisconsin debuted at No. 1 in the USCHO.com preseason poll and went on to validate that distinction with a 36-4-1 record and a national championship. Meanwhile, Sara Bauer earned the program’s first Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. As an encore in 2006-07, UW successfully defended all three championships while posting a record of 36-1-4 and solidifying its status as one of the elite women’s college hockey programs in the nation. Johnson, the 2006 and 2007 WCHA and AHCA Coach of the Year, led the Badgers to back-to-back WCHA regular season, playoff and NCAA championships while winning more games (72) in a two-year period (2005-07) than any other team in women’s college hockey history. During the 2006-07 campaign, Johnson’s team broke or tied 18 NCAA team and individual records including wins in a season (36), fewest losses (one), best winning percentage (.927) and most shutouts (18). Johnson has not looked back since, advancing to the national championship game again in 2008 and 2009. Wisconsin brought back the WCHA playoff and NCAA title in 2009 after suffering a loss to UMD in the ’08 championship game. Johnson put together an elite squad and in the 2008-09 season featured the nation’s top players, with UW players leading the nation in nearly every category.

Uw senior goaltenDer Jessie vetter wins 2009 patty kazmaier memorial awarDBOSTON, Mass. – Jessie Vetter, a senior goaltender from the University of Wisconsin, is the 2009 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner. In its 12th year, the award is presented annually by The USA Hockey Foundation to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. Vetter is the third Western Collegiate Hockey Association player to earn the award, joining Minnesota’s Krissy Wendell (2005) and Wisconsin’s Sara Bauer (2006). Vetter, from Cottage Grove, Wis., received the award here at a brunch ceremony at the Royal Son-esta Hotel Boston. She was chosen from a group of three finalists that also included Meghan Agosta , a junior forward from Mercyhurst College, and Sarah Vaillancourt, a senior forward from Harvard. “Jessie is the backbone of our team and without her, similar to our last three seasons, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” said Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson. “She has certainly proven that she is not only the best goaltender at the collegiate level but internationally as well.” Vetter has backstopped the Badgers to unprec-edented success throughout her career. She has been between the pipes for all but one game this season and has posted 32 wins and sent Wisconsin to the NCAA championship game for a fourth straight year. Her efforts helped the Badgers garner a No. 1 ranking for 13 weeks of the regular season. Vetter’s 14 shutouts in 2008-09 set a new NCAA record, while her 38 career shutouts and 91 wins also both rank tops in the NCAA. She was 11-1-0 in NCAA tournament action. The Badger alternate captain had a 32-2-5 record

and led the nation with a .940 save percentage and 2281:55 minutes played. She ranks second overall with a 1.29 goals-against average and her .885 winning percentage is fourth in the NCAA. In WCHA play, Vetter held a 21-2-5 record and ranked second with a 1.50 GAA and .931 save percentage. For her efforts, she garnered All-WCHA First Team honors. In the conference tournament, Vetter made 40 saves in two wins, including 15 against then top-ranked Minnesota to capture the championship. She was named to the all-tournament team and garnered WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF MVP honors. Off the ice, Vetter has been involved in the local community in Madison. She has made presentations at multiple schools including Taylor Prairie, Wauna-kee Arboretum Elementary and St. Jerome. Further, she participated in the Easter Seals golf fundraiser and visited the Ronald McDonald House.

Vetter, a senior goalie from Cottage Grove, Wis., was named the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is presented to the best women’s collegiate player. She owns career NCAA career records for shutouts and victories and is 11-1 in NCAA play. Knight, a sophomore from Hanover, N.H., scored 45 goals, 38 assists and 83 points for the Badgers. She led the nation in goals and points. She is joined as an all-American forward by repeat first tem choices Sarah Vaillancourt, a senior from Harvard, and Meghan Agosta, a junior from Mercyhurst. MADISON, Wis. – For the third time in four years, Wisconsin is the top team in women’s college hockey. The Badgers rode the shutout goaltending of Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner Jessie Vetter and blanked Mercyhurst, 5-0, in the championship game of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion Frozen Four before 2,437 fans at Agganis Arena in Boston, Mass. It was the 10th straight year that the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has produced the national championship team in women’s hockey and the ninth straight NCAA Frozen Four championship. Vetter, playing in her fourth straight national title game, made 37 saves, to run her record in Frozen Fours to 7-1. It was the 14th shutout of her senior season and a NCAA best 39th career shutout. She wrapped up her career with 91 victories, another NCAA record. She allowed but six goals in eight Frozen Four games and had a career record of 11-1 in NCAA competition. Only two weeks earlier, Vetter was named the Most Outstanding Player and led the Badgers to the championship of the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF with a 5-3 victory over WCHA regular season champion Minnesota before 1,730 fans at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. Both foes in the Border Battle and defending champ Minnesota Duluth advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals the next weekend. Wisconsin beat Dartmouth 7-0 at the Kohl Center in Madison. Min-nesota edged Boston College 4-3 at Ridder while Duluth traveled to New Hampshire and handed UNH a 4-1 loss. It set up a NCAA semifi nal of two old foes – the Badgers and Bulldogs – who have played for the national title the last two seasons. In 2008, Wiscon-sin lost to Minnesota Duluth 4-0 in Duluth, but the Badgers gained revenge with a 5-1 victory while

Mercyhurst held off a late Minnesota rally and scored a 5-4 decision to earn a title date with Wisconsin on Boston University‘s campus. The Badgers (34-2-5, WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF champion) broke the game open with three goals in a 5:10 span in the second period. Vetter made 18 saves in the third period to wrap up her career with her second shutout in the Frozen Four and only the third ever in NCAA title game history. Vetter, from Cottage Grove, Wis., was named the tournament’s most outstanding player for the second time in her career. She is the only player to ever accomplish that feat and for the third time, Vetter was named the goalie on the all-tournament team. She was joined on the all-tourney team by Windmaier, Matthews, Lawler, Knight and Mercyhurst’s Meghan Agosta. Johnson, the son of former UW men’s hockey coach Bob Johnson and a gold medalist on the 1980 U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, now has seven Frozen Four wins, the second most all-time by a head coach. He is only the second coach to ever win three NCAA championships. Minnesota Duluth’s Shannon Miller has won four.

third straight season Agosta, a 40 goal scorer, has been selected. Larocque, a sophomore from Winnipeg Mani-toba, was the leader on defense for Minnesota Duluth, the defending national champions. She scored four goals and 37 points. Kacey Bellamy, a senior from New Hampshire, joins Larocque on the All-American blue line. The second team All-Americans include a pair of Minnesota players. Defenseman Melanie Gagnon, a senior co-captain for the Golden Gophers, and forward Monique Lamoureux, the only freshman honored as an All-American, join Boston College goalie Molly Schaus, Princeton defenseman Sasha Sherry, Cornell forward Rebecca Johnson and Boston College forward Kelli Stack on the second team.

baDgers Down gophers to win 2009 wcha Final Face-oFF title in minneapolisWisconsin’s airtight defense kept Minnesota’s explo-sive offense stifled until the Badgers had skated to a four-goal lead Sunday afternoon, and cruised to a 5-3 victory over the top-ranked Golden Gophers in the title game of the 2009 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF tournament. Rising to the No. 1 seed was a satisfying benefi t to Wisconsin, which had split four games with Min-

nesota during the season. Both teams won at home, and won a shootout tie-breaker at home to officially stand 1-1-2 against each other, but Minnesota won the season championship by one point. “After losing to them by one point, this makes up for it,” said Erika Lawler, a 5-foot-0 center who rose up to play a dominant third period. Not only did Lawler score at 7:10 to break open a 2-1 game and ignite Wisconsin’s game-breaking three-goal rally to 5-1, but she got nine shots in the game and six of them were in the third period. The Gophers scored two goals late and make the final score closer than the control Wisconsin displayed in the game, and 1,730 fans at Ridder Arena saw Wisconsin take what might be a step toward the ultimate objective of an NCAA championship. Wisconsin advanced to the title game with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota beat Minnesota State 7-2 in the semifinals.

wisconsin’s hillary knight leaDs 2008-09 wcha awarD winners as player oF the yearMarch 5, 2009/MADISON, Wis. – Regular season champion University of Minnesota placed three players on the Western Collegiate Hockey Associa-tion women’s all-conference first team for 2008-09, it was announced March 5 and runner-up University of

Wisconsin placed a pair of players on the first team, including sophomore forward Hilary Knight who was also named the WCHA Player of the Year. Knight, a sophomore from Hanover, N.H., has scored a nation-leading 39 goals this season and was a unanimous selection to the all-conference first team. She has 67 points on the season and was one of five WCHA players named earlier this week as a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented annually to the best women’s college hockey player. Knight is joined on the first all-star squad by WCHA Defensive Player of the Year Melanie Gagnon, a senior defenseman from Minnesota, WCHA Rookie of the Year Monique Lamoureux, a forward from Minnesota, and Monique’s twin sister, Minnesota forward Jocelyne Lamoureux. The other first team-ers are University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore defenseman Jocelyne Larocque and Wisconsin senior goaltender Jessie Vetter.

Last season Vetter, a senior from Cottage Grove Wis., shared a first team goalie slot with UMD’s Kim Martin. She was all-conference first team as a sophomore and is the all-time NCAA leader in career shutouts with 36 and career victories with 86. She has a goals-against average of 1.29, a save percentage of .938 and is a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award. The Lamoureux twins are freshmen from Grand Forks, N.D. Monique led the conference in scoring and was the runaway winner of the conference rook-ie of the year honor. She has 36 goals and 71 points and was also named a finalist for the Kazmaier Award. Jocelyne played on the same line as her sister and had 26 goals. The Lamoureux twins join Wisconsin forward Brooke Ammerman, Bemidji State University goalie Zuzana Tomcikova, Minnesota defender Anne Schleper and Wisconsin defender Brittany Haver-stock on the league’s all-rookie team. Gagnon, a senior from St. Adolphe, Manitoba, and Larocque, a sophomore from Winnipeg, Manitoba, are the all-league fi rst team defenders. Gagnon, a co-captain for the Golden Gophers, had four goals and 22 assists while Larocque averages over a point per game with four goals, 31 assists and 35 points. Gigi Marvin, a Minnesota forward, was also honored as the Turfer WCHA Outstanding Stu-dent-Athlete of the Year for 2008-09. A senior from Warroad, Minn., Marvin is a captain for the Golden Gophers and a former league rookie of the year, first team all-conference performer and All-American. She had 25 goals with 24 assists for 49 points and was a second team all-conference player this season. She is also a finalist for the Kazmaier Award for the second straight year. Marvin is a three-time All-WCHA Academic Team member. The WCHA Coach of the Year Award for 2008-09 is shared by Minnesota’s Brad Frost and Wisconsin`s Mark Johnson. Frost, the WCHA Coach of the Year last year in his first season with the Golden Gophers, led the team to its first conference title since 2005 and a 30-3-3 overall record heading into the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF this weekend. Johnson, who was named the head coach of the women’s 2010 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team last month, led the Badgers to a second place finish, just one point behind the Gophers. Johnson has led Wisconsin to a 29-2-5 overall record heading into the 2009 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF. In addition to the individual award winners and all-league teams announced Thursday, the WCHA also released the 2008-09 All-WCHA Academic Team. Composed of 76 outstanding student-athletes representing all eight women’s WCHA-member institutions, the group includes 43 who are repeat honorees. To qualify for the All-WCHA Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at present institution, prior to the current academic year, and have a grade-point aver-age of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or

The Badgers compiled a record of 34-2-5, winning both the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF and NCAA post-season tournaments. For Johnson, it is his third Coach of the Year Award, having been similarly honored in 2006 and 2007 – both seasons when the Badgers won national titles. Wisconsin ended the season as it began. Un-beaten in its final 12 games, the Badgers also started the season 18-0-2. The only title that eluded the UW was the WCHA regular season crown as the Badgers finished one point behind Minnesota. In the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF final, Wisconsin prevailed over UM, 5-3. The Badgers were dominant in the NCAA Tourna-ment, sweeping Dartmouth, Minnesota-Duluth and Mercyhurst by a combined score of 17-1. Included in that trio of games was a 5-0 shutout of Mercyhurst in the title game in Boston. Johnson has a career record of 210-39-22 (.815) in seven seasons as head coach of the Badgers. His winning percentage ranks him first among active NCAA Div. 1 women’s head coaches and he will serve as head coach of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. The Coach of the Year Award winners are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches As-
