with his feet and being able to get after the quarterback in the passing game.”

Added defensive line coach Larry Johnson, “Drew is very special. I have some videotape. He can run the ball also, but he’s pretty accurate. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

Johnson’s pupils will be tasked with getting to Hare, and the Buckeyes have averaged four sacks per game so far this season. Getting past the Huskies’ offen-sive line, however, may be more difficult than pass rushing against your average Mid-American Conference front five.

Northern Illinois’ five starting offensive linemen stand 6-4 on average and weigh more than 302 pounds. While three of those players are new starters this year, two are fifth-year seniors and two are redshirt juniors. Redshirt freshman right tackle Max Scharping is the only one who could be called inexperienced.

“Honestly they’re probably the best offensive line we’ve seen thus far and they play hard, they play as a unit and they have a lot of real experienced guys, guys that have played a lot of football over the course of the last couple of years,” Schutt said.

“It’s going to be a challenge for us, and this week we’ve really worked on attack-ing the line of scrimmage, really getting that push back from our front four and creating that new line of scrimmage and running and making plays.”

Offense Looks To Bounce BackWhile the Buckeye defense has its

attention on stopping Hare and the Huskies offense, the Ohio State offense is focusing on itself.

The Buckeyes got a 38-0 win over Hawaii last week, but the offense was not happy with its performance, one that saw Ohio State struggle to generate big plays and manage less than 4 yards per rush.

“We just have to get better,” said offen-sive tackle Taylor Decker. “That’s all it is. I didn’t necessarily expect it to be a finished product this early in the season. I did think we played a lot better against Virginia Tech than we did against Hawaii. You just have to improve. I think we are in a good situation where we are kind of unhappy with the way we played even

Ohio State will enter its contest with Northern Illinois as the defending nation-al champions, riding a 15-game winning streak and holding the nation’s No. 1 ranking. Still, there is one thing the Huskies have going for them that even the Buckeyes can’t match.

The Huskies have won 11 or more games in each of the past five seasons, a feat matched only by Oregon, and NIU’s 57 wins over that span trail only the Ducks (60), Alabama (58) and Florida State (58).

With such an established tradition of winning, the Buckeyes are not likely to take the visiting Huskies lightly.

“Well, they are winners,” head coach Urban Meyer said when asked his takeaway from Northern Illinois. “I think they’ve hired very, very quality coaches over the years, and they should be commended.

“They are just a very good team that knows how to win. Anytime you face an offense where they are balanced, they can run and pass and the quarterback is an athlete – what we all strive to do is keep teams off-balance. And then they are big, big 300-pound D-tackles and a very good defense. This is a Big Ten-quality team.”

The Huskies have proved that, winning games at Northwestern, Iowa and Purdue in the last two-plus seasons alone, and Meyer has made sure his players are well aware of Northern Illinois’ abilities.

Quarterback Drew Hare led the Huskies to their victory over the Wildcats last season and is the engine that drives an offense that has averaged 47.5 points per game in two wins to open the 2015 season. Hare, a dual threat who was the team’s second-leading rusher a year ago, is a high-level decision maker who has thrown 24 touchdowns against just two interceptions in 16 games since assuming the starting role at the beginning of the 2014 season.

“He has the ability to run and throw the ball,” Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Schutt said of Hare. “He’s good with his feet and good with his arm. That’s some-thing we haven’t really seen yet and some-thing we worked really hard on preparing for this week, being able to stop the run

tackle Isaiah Prince and corners Eric Glover-Williams and Denzel Ward – saw the field for the Buckeyes against Hawaii, and Meyer said there are more first-year players pushing for time. The coach indicated that freshman linebackers Nick Conner, Justin Hilliard and Jerome Baker as well as receiver K.J. Hill were all close to seeing the field.

• Meyer also said that running back Mike Weber is a freshman who will play this season, doing so as soon as he returns from a meniscus tear suffered in fall camp. The running back has slowly worked back into practice this week but will be held out of the game with Northern Illinois. Meyer said he is probable for the following week’s game against Western Michigan.

• Dontre Wilson is still not 100 percent, Meyer said, as the “H” continues to work back from a broken foot suffered against Michigan State last season.

• Braxton Miller is a player who should get double-digit touches every game, Meyer said, adding that the former quar-terback’s shoulder has recovered to the point that he is capable of throwing.

“If you want to really give them the ball, put them behind center 5 yards and snap it to them,” Meyer said of his H position players. “That’s kind of where – if you look over the years, we’ve done that with Jalin (Marshall), we’ve done it with Percy Harvin, done it with Braxton Miller, done it with Dontre Wilson, done it with these really good athletes that need the ball in their hand.”

though we did win 38-0. There are areas to improve, but at the end of the day, we got the win.”

The Buckeye offense had plenty of excuses to fall back on for a performance that was subpar by Ohio State stan-dards. The team was coming off a short week, returning to Columbus around 4:30 a.m. the Tuesday before facing the Rainbow Warriors. The offense was fac-ing its second unconventional defense in a row after seeing a “Bear” front against Virginia Tech and a 3-4 defense against Hawaii.

Meyer was having none of that, going so far as to say that if he heard any player or coach resting on those excuses that he had a problem.

Somewhat surprisingly given the way it finished last season and the fact that it returned four of five starters, the offensive line was an issue against the Rainbow Warriors.

“The biggest concern is the offensive line gets a lot of credit around here,” Meyer said. “We are an absolute offen-sive-line driven program. Our success over the last three years and two games is because of our offensive line, and with that comes a lot of responsibility. We expect them to play much better.

“Is that putting it all on them? No. But when we play well, I put it all on them too. So we’ve just got to play better. And the great thing is I have an excellent line coach and excellent players, and I imagine they’re going to have a great week.”

Meyer added that blocking in gener-al was a problem against Hawaii as the Buckeyes struggled in that respect on the perimeter as well, which resulted in a lack of explosive plays.

A Return To RoutineWhile Meyer made sure his players were

not using the short week before the Hawaii game as an excuse for their performance, the Buckeyes did welcome a return to nor-malcy prior to the tilt with Northern Illinois.

“It’s good to get back in a routine,” offen-sive lineman Pat Elflein said. “That’s been our routine for as long as I have been here, (having a) Saturday game, and it’s just good to get back in that rhythm. It feels like nor-mal Ohio State football.”

Last week was anything but. After the late return to Columbus some players had to prepare for morning classes and an uncon-ventional Tuesday off day. Decker said he didn’t go to sleep before his early-morning class that day because he had to finish some assignments.

Prior to the contest with the Huskies, the Buckeyes took their typical Monday off from practice before getting in consecutive great practices, according to Meyer. To a man the players welcomed that return to the structure they’re used to.

“We know in the back of our minds that as an entire team we did not play our best,” linebacker Darron Lee said. “But we don’t panic, we don’t worry necessarily. It’s just that we have some more work that we have to do to get where we want to get so we’ll just take it day by day.

“Now we’re back on our normal routine schedule. I’m so happy about that.”

We continue our look back at Eddie George’s 1995 season on the 20th anniversary of his Heisman Trophy-winning year with reprints from the Sept. 23, 1995, issue of Buckeye Sports Bulletin.

After George gained 212 yards on 36 carries against Washington in the second game of the season, BSB proclaimed on its cover, “Tailback Enters Heisman Fray as OSU Topples Huskies.”

BSB Staff Predictions

The Ohio State offense struggled against the 3-4 odd stack defense of Hawaii last weekend, and while it is largely known that Northern Illinois runs a base 4-3, I fully expect the Huskies to show multiple different looks at the Buckeyes, including the 3-4 look. On a full week of practice and with a lot to prove, however, I expect the offensive line to handle whatever look is shown to it and perform up to expectations.

The question mark is the play of the quarterbacks and how Urban Meyer plans to use one or both. We know Cardale Jones will start, but it is real-ly on him to distance himself from J.T. Barrett to become the sole starter behind center. If Jones once again fails to impress, look for Barrett to get his second chance to shorten the distance between him and Jones.

The defense will have a slightly larg-er test this week as Huskies quarter-back Drew Hare has 718 yards passing in just two games this season to go along with six scores and no intercep-tions. While the Buckeye defense was able to shut down the Hawaii offense altogether, Max Wittek was essentially a one-trick pony as he is not very effec-tive running the ball. Hare is and could cause problems for the Buckeyes.

4 BSB Quickly Sept. 18, 2015 Staff Predictions

As will be the case with the majority of games Ohio State plays, the Buckeyes will have more talent on the field than Northern Illinois.

After last week’s mini-debacle against Hawaii – if you can call a 38-0 drubbing a deba-cle – that Buckeye talent is likely itching to get back on the field, especially on offense. But the thing is, the Huskies are themselves much more talented than the Rainbow Warriors.

That leaves one of two options likely to happen. Either Ohio State will come out of the gate swinging and run up an early lead, or the offense will come out thinking too much about making a splash and stall once again.

Don’t count on the latter happening, espe-cially if the Buckeyes start Cardale Jones and stick with him.

If the offense finds some consistency, Ohio State should get a few scores on the board in the first quarter. That success will continue for much of the game in a big day for Jones, Ezekiel Elliott and the Buckeye offensive line.

On defense, things won’t go quite as well as they did a week ago. That’s through no fault of Ohio State, though, as Drew Hare and Northern Illinois are simply better than Max Wittek and Hawaii. The Huskies will get their chances and they’ll put something more than a goose egg on the board, but it won’t ever be enough to challenge the Buckeyes.

In the end, Ohio State will get to rest its starters in the fourth quarter, as long as the offense does indeed bounce back.

Tim MoodyDesigner/Staff Writer

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer called Northern Illinois a Big Ten-caliber team in his Sept. 16 press conference, and that may be true. I don’t have much respect for Purdue, though, and I can promise you I feel pretty close to the same about the Huskies’ chances of doing anything against Ohio State.

Northern Illinois has wins against several Big Ten teams over the last five years, but the Huskies aren’t beating Ohio State this week. I don’t know what the margin will be (although as you’ll see below, I have a guess), but it’ll be on the positive side of the ledger for the Buckeyes.

So with that out of the way, I’ll say this: I think there’s something to be learned from this game, even though it comes against an overmatched MAC foe. The Hawaii game last week was something of a wake-up call – as much as any 38-0 win can be – but could be excused for a variety of reasons, namely the short week of preparation.

That is no longer the case this week. The Buckeyes have a full allotment of time to rest up and prepare for Northern Illinois. If they come out and hammer the Huskies, expect a fun next two months. If it’s another sluggish performance, that might show that issues run deeper than simply playing on four days’ rest.

No matter the case, though, there will be plenty of time to work it out. The next two months will feature plenty of overmatched foes and de facto scrimmages.

BSB Staff Predictions

The talk all week from Ohio State players and coaches was of the respect they have for Northern Illinois and the winning tradition that the Huskies have. That’s all well and good, but while I think NIU will bring a bet-ter outfit to Columbus than Hawaii did, I’m confident the Buckeyes will be better as well.

The Silver Bullets will not get a second consecutive shutout as the Huskies bring a multidimensional offense to the Horseshoe that features what defensive tackle Tommy Schutt called the best offensive line Ohio State has faced this year. The defense will, however, do enough to get the win, and my money is on the Buckeyes forcing NIU quar-terback Drew Hare into his first interception of the season. The defense was stellar last week, and I don’t expect much of a drop-off against a better opponent.

The offense is obviously the area for improvement. Combine a full week of prac-tice with facing a more traditional defense and I think the Ohio State offense will look a lot more like the explosive unit we’ve come to expect than it did against Hawaii.

Last week the long play from scrimmage for the Buckeyes was 24 yards, and I think they top that at least three times on Saturday, including once on the ground. The offense will be out to prove something after a perfor-mance that was below its standards and will put up points in a hurry.

NIU is a good team that will surely put up a fight, but I have a feeling the Huskies are walking into a buzz saw.

Final Score

Make no mistake, Northern Illinois has been the class of the MAC for the last half-decade, and that’s not a bad thing in college football these days.

Last week, the MAC got two big wins – including Bowling Green’s upset of Big Ten foe Maryland – and the Huskies have five victories against Big Ten teams over the past nine seasons.

So this isn’t a team to take lightly, but it’s an unfortunate truth for Northern Illinois that it finds itself on the schedule the week after the Buckeyes turned in a disappointing performance vs. Hawaii.

Given the short turnaround before the Rainbow Warriors invaded Ohio Stadium, it’s not a huge surprise the Buckeyes weren’t at their best. At the same time, an inconsistent performance such as that is sure to keep the Buckeyes focused going into the Huskies’ visit, and I think the Buckeyes are going to be amped up to deliver a performance to wash away any bad taste from the Hawaii game.

So what do I expect? I expect 150 yards from Ezekiel Elliott. I expect 300 passing from the Buckeye quarterback duo, with at least 200 of those coming from Cardale Jones. I expect the defense to bottle up Northern Illinois better than expected, especially considering the Huskies have had one of the more dynamic offenses in Division I.

Add it all up and I think the Buckeyes roll in Ohio Stadium.

Matchup/Standings6 BSB Quickly Sept. 18, 2015

Key Matchup:Ohio State vs.

Northern Illinois’ front

Through two games, it’s fair to rate the play of Ohio State’s offensive line as mixed.

That might sound odd, but two games is just a small sample size, and the offense has been disjointed at times. Using a stacked “Bear” front and a blitz-happy scheme without deep safeties, Virginia Tech forced the Buckeyes into mistakes at times – and also gave up enough big plays that the Buckeyes racked up almost 600 yards of offense.

Then, on just four days of rest, Ohio State had its worst rushing showing since last year’s Penn State game in a 38-0 win against Hawaii that wasn’t exactly pleasing to the eye.

One thing that can’t be argued is that the two opponents so far have given the Buckeyes’ unique looks. The Bear defense has been used by just a handful of opponents over the years vs. OSU, while the Buckeyes have admittedly struggled against 3-4 looks such as the one used by Hawaii.

Ohio State offensive linemen and coach-es haven’t used the different schemes as an excuse for any bad play so far this year, but they have also looked forward to facing a base 4-3 scheme – the kind of setup that allows the Buckeyes to use their combo blocks and pulls to their greatest ability. And Northern Illinois should provide that test Saturday.

“It’s pretty much our defense, a base defense,” head coach Urban Meyer said.

So far, that defense has ceded just 128.0 yards per game and 3.1 yards per carry. Of course, Ohio State didn’t worry about opponents’ stats while running over Wisconsin and Alabama at the end of last season, so getting the running game going against a MAC team will be expected.

And it might help that the Buckeyes will be facing a 4-3 for the first time all season.

“They’ve got big strong guys in the middle,” guard Patrick Elflein said. “They play a base four-down defense. They run a little bit of odd on third down, which is kind of what Ohio State runs, so we went against that all spring. So we have got a lot of preparation for that. We are ready to go against that.”
