cancellation at least 5 business days prior to the event. Failure to notify the office adequately will result

in potential fees and restriction of services offered.

TABLE/BOOTH REQUESTS

A table/booth is an excellent opportunity for employers to promote hiring and internship opportunities

as well as solicit students to attend an information session or garner interest to sign up for on-campus

interviews. The location for tables is the student center, Armour J. Blackburn Center on the first floor.

This is a high-visibility, high-student traffic area.

A six-foot table and two chairs will be reserved and set up for your designated area via the Office of

Career Services and Blackburn Center staff. To be fair to other employers' needs and campus agencies

needing promotional space, an employer cannot recruit using the booth promotion service more than

twice in one semester. While staffing a booth, employers are limited to promote their recruiting

opportunities at their table only. No solicitation of products or services outside of a company's jobs

available is allowed. Giveaways and small displays to attract students are welcome, however due to

liability issues all catering must be provided by Sodexo unless otherwise approved by Auxiliary Services.

The Office of Career Services will promote the booth to students and Career Services Network contacts.

All requests must go through BisonCareerLink at least 5 business days in advance and payment will be

processed by Auxiliary Services. Please contact our office directly at 202-806-7513 for assistance or

inquires.

RECRUITMENT BEST PRACTICES

Visibility and Targeted Relationship Management is Key

Howard students are exposed to many excellent organizations throughout the year. Many of our employer partners assertively pursue and have established an ongoing relationship with students, faculty and staff through direct and personal participation in career development activities on campus.

Page 9: OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES (OCS) EMPLOYER RECRUITMENT …

9

Some Best Practices We Recommend:

Conduct meetings with all key Howard stakeholders, beginning with OCS, to review partnership strategies, and expectations.

Establish a well-coordinated internal effort with all participating recruiters and corporate units within your organization. We recommend having one primary contact person who is aware of all of your corporate efforts at Howard University.

Sign up to brand your organization on campus through participation in Employer Sponsorship Program.

Sponsor (outside of Employer Sponsorship Program) individual career development initiatives, activities, and job search tools. All sponsored efforts are clearly identified to recognize your support.

Participate in career fairs, career week activities, networking receptions, and relevant campus activities.

Provide posters advertising positions and activities sponsored by your organization on campus. Advertise your career and internship opportunities through our office and our partnership with BisonCareerLink.

Establish a designated student liaison with targeted student organizations. Please notify our office of this contact.

Invite students to your corporate offices for an orientation of your organization and to dialogue with current staff to experience a day in the life of an employee of your company/organization. Please contact OCS to coordinate.

Sponsor student participation at conferences and other professional development events of their interest. Please contact OCS to coordinate.

Facilitate career and professional development training to increase visibility, educate and empower and develop relationships with targeted student populations. You can partner with OCS to present at one of our resume review or career development workshops/seminars. Please click here to sign up as a presenter/speaker.

Send an informational binder outlining career opportunities in your organization. We will house this binder in our Career Resources Library for student review.

Invite targeted student organizations to participate in “experiential projects” to review and provide solutions to “real” organizational issues.

Link/advertise your organization to the OCS Website via employer sponsorship.

POLICIES

It is the objective of the Office of Career Services to both assist students in making informed career decisions and to partner with employers to maximize the outcomes of their recruiting efforts at Howard University. The following policies have been developed to provide clarity for both students and employers and to ensure a fair process for all parties involved.

Page 10: OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES (OCS) EMPLOYER RECRUITMENT …

10

Registration with the University via BisonCareerLink will be constituted as your agreement to abide by our policies and procedures. Failure to comply with this agreement will forfeit your organization’s right to recruit at Howard University.

JOB OFFER POLICY

Students at Howard University should be able to make effective job offer decisions. To do so, they must

be able to explore all of the options open to them. This includes applying for fellowships, considering

graduate and/or professional school, participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Programs, and exploring

other career options.

We recognize that many employers want to make offers to summer interns. However, forcing a student

to make a hasty decision pertaining to permanent employment precludes his or her exploration of other

options. This can lead to reneging on job offers, which is against our policy guidelines. Therefore, to

create a more positive image of employers recruiting on campus and to ensure that students have the

opportunity to make sound decisions, all employers participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Program

must follow these guidelines.

FALL OFFERS

Students interviewing during the fall 2016 semester must have at least until December 30, 2016 to make a

decision on an employer offer or option. We also expect you to respect our students’ academic

examination schedule (November 28 - December 13, 2016).

SPRING OFFERS

Students interviewing during the spring 2017 semester must have until April 14, 2017 to make an

informed decision on their offer or option. Students interviewing for summer jobs after April 14, 2017

must have two weeks from the date of their offer to make a decision.

SUMMER OFFERS

Students receiving offers for permanent employment from recruiting employers because of their summer

2016 internship must have until November 25, 2016 to make a decision on their offer or option.

Students receiving offers for summer 2017 employment from recruiting employers because of their

summer 2016 internship must have until November 25, 2016 to make a decision on their offer or option.

Students interviewing for summer jobs during the spring 2017 semester must have until April 14, 2017 to

make a decision on their offer or option. Students interviewing for summer jobs after April 14, 2017 must

have two weeks from the date of their offer to make a decision.

INTERNSHIP POLICY

It is the objective of the University’s Career Services Office to both assist students in making informed

career decisions and to partner with employers to maximize the outcomes of their recruiting efforts at

Howard University. The following policies have been developed to provide clarity for both students and

Page 11: OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES (OCS) EMPLOYER RECRUITMENT …

11

employers and to ensure a fair process for all parties involved. Registration with the University via

BisonCareerLink will be constituted as your agreement to abide by our policies and procedures. Failure

to comply with this agreement will forfeit your organization’s right to recruit at Howard University.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Internship Program at Howard University is designed to provide students with practical real world

career-related experience within a professional setting. It offers an opportunity for students to apply

knowledge and theories learned in the classroom to the world of work. The Internship Program also

allows students to explore professions, develop career-related skills and abilities while gaining valuable

work experience.

WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has defined an internship as follows:

An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the

classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give

students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional

fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate

talent.

CRITERIA FOR AN EXPERIENCE TO BE DEFINED AS AN INTERNSHIP

To ensure that an experience—whether it is a traditional internship or one conducted remotely or

virtually—is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship in accordance with

NACE definition, all the following criteria must be met:

1. The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for

applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the

operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.

2. The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.

3. The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired

qualifications.

4. There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the

student’s academic coursework.

5. There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional

background in the field of the experience.

6. There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.

7. There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support

learning objectives/goals.

Page 12: OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES (OCS) EMPLOYER RECRUITMENT …

12

If these criteria are followed, it is the opinion of NACE and Howard University that the experience can be

considered a legitimate internship. Interns classified as employees would in most cases be considered

nonexempt employees who must be paid at least minimum wage and overtime pay.

INTERNSHIP CATEGORIES

Internships usually fall into four basic categories as illustrated below. While not every organization has

the ability to provide payment and/or for credit internship experiences, the best situation for a student

is to receive both payment and credit for work performed. Academic Credit received for an internship

takes a student one step closer toward graduation and compensation helps cover the costs associated

with carrying out an internship.

UNPAID INTERNSHIPS

Federal guidelines released by the U.S. Department of Labor has outlined the following six criteria for

unpaid internships to authenticate that an internship does not represent an employment relationship. If

any of these criteria are not met, the intern must be paid.

1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is

similar to training which would be given in an educational environment;

2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;

3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing

staff;

4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of

the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;

5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and

6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time

spent in the internship.

ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR INTERNSHIPS

Academic credit, while it legitimizes an unpaid experience, should not replace compensation for work

carried out during an internship. Please note that the decision to award academic credit is made by a

student’s respective academic department at Howard University and the internship experience must fit

the above criteria and be related to the student's field of study.

EMPLOYERS WITH INTERNSHIPS

Employers who seek to partner with the Howard University to provide internships for Howard students

must register with the Career Services Office and create a profile via our online Career Management

System - BisonCareerLink.

ON CAMPUS RECRUITMENT POLICY

Recruitment activities that take place on campus are for Howard University Students only.

Recruitment activities should take place during the same semester as your interviews in order to

fully leverage student interest in your organization.

Please be advised that changes to any campus recruitment strategy less than three weeks

before a scheduled event, or while students are on recess, may negatively impact attendance or

applications for positions.

If you make changes to your interview schedule after students have begun to select interview

slots, it is your responsibility to contact students directly to reschedule their interviews. You

should also contact the Office of Career Services to make sure changes are reflected on

BisonCareerLink.

The Office of Career Services recommends allotting four weeks between your initial position

posting on BisonCareerLink and selected interview date.

OCS does not accept requests made for information sessions less than one week prior to the

requested date. Invitation only events are excluded from this policy.

We are not responsible for the return shipment of promotional materials or any items left on

campus. If you require assistance with return shipments please coordinate with the Office of

Career Services prior to your event.

CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOW POLICY - RECRUITERS

request for cancellation at least 5 business days prior to the event. Cancellation less than 24-
