Volcanic Ash:

Return ToNormal ThisWeekendAccording to the TourismCommittee (CTTSB), 55tourists were obliged toremain in Saint Barth longerthan expected due to the dis-ruption in air traffic caused bythe eruption of the Icelandicvolcano, Eyjafjallajökull.Hotels tried to help thosetourists by either offering spe-cial rates, proposing lessexpensive rooms, or absorbingthe nightly room tax, while atthe same time certain touristsscheduled to arrive on theisland for the last week ofpost-Easter vacation wereforced to cancel their trips. The CTTSB will issue a reportat the end of the week on thefinancial effect of these can-cellations. The 55 stranded tourists—anumber provided by callingvarious hotels on the island—does not take into account thenumber of residents who wereunable to take scheduled tripsto Europe. According to Fab-rice Danet, director of the air-port, the airlines serving SaintBarth saw 30 to 40% of theirpassengers cancel their depar-tures from the island duringthe days that European air-space was closed due to thecloud of volcanic ash. Notonly passengers on their wayto Juliana were affected, butalso those on charters toAntigua, where they mightcatch a flight on British Air-ways or Virgin Atlantic toLondon. While France fully opened itsairspace as of Wednesday, thedeparture of the last detainedtourists will be over theweekend.

Almost 2,000 people attended the April16 inauguration of the renovated sportsstadium, which has new synthetic turffinanced for 1.5 million euros by RomanAbramovitch. The festivities started in themorning with sporting events for schoolchildren, and finished a little before mid-night with a soccer game in which thePortuguese team (ASPSB) beat the YoungStars, 2 to 1.The official inauguration ceremony tookplace at 7pm, led by Bruno Magras: afterthe traditional ribbon cutting, the presi-dent of the Collectivity presented a com-memorative plaque in honor of RomanAbramovitch, (absent but represented byhis colleague Jim Boos), who financedthe new turf as well as a synthetic athletictrack, whichreplace the old dirtplaying field.“This is a wonder-ful moment, full ofemotion and joy,”noted Magras, atthe opening of hisspeech before hestated, “there isnothing expectedin return.” Thepresident thenaddressed the factthat there were

rumors that Roman Abramotich hadimposed certain conditions before financ-ing the renovation of the stadium. “MrAbramovitch is the owner of the ChelseaFootball Club. He loves the island andwanted to make his contribution to theinfrastructure. I give you my word that henever imposed any conditions,” Magrasassured the crowd on Friday night, as theyapplauded the name of Roman Abro-movitch, the Russian businessman whopurchased the property along the beach inGouverneur. At the end of his speech,Magras presented one of the Collectivi-ty’s medals of honor to Jim Boos, and asecond medal to Roberto Pablo Sanchez. The ceremony was followed by a fire-works display.

They set sail on Sunday,April 18 from the Port ofConcarneau, but sinceThursday the fleet of 25Figaro Beneteau sailboats inthe 10th edition of theTransat ag2r, has faced a

brutal slowing down in theirprogress toward St Barth, the arrival port for thistransatlantic regatta thattakes place every two years. The weather conditions areforcing the 50 sailors in this

event to carefully plan theirstrategies in order to arrivefirst in St Barth. As a result, the fleet that started out as atight group is now dispersedacross a wider area of theAtlantic. The farthest to the

west is Miguel Danet (oneof the two Saint Barthsailors in the race) and hispartner Damien Cloarec(aboard Concarneau - SaintBarth), while to the east aretwo former winners, JeanLe Cam aboard Généraliand Nicolas Troussel aboardCrédit Mutule de Bretagne, who are leading a section ofthe pack. The question is ifthe strategy of holding backnow will lead to winninglater. With diverging pointsof view, there will be a lotof suspense. Will those wholead the fleet after La Palmalead the way all the wayacross the ocean to SaintBarth? The answer will beknown in a few weekstime… Follow the race athttp://www.transat.ag2rlam-ondiale.fr/
