October Greetings!

The past month brought forth many challenges, but new and exciting blessings for me and our church. As we reflect on the month of September, take time to be in a space of reflection to see how God is moving in your life today.

I attended the Bishop's Convocation held in Palm Desert last month. The theme of this event was "All Things New!" The guest speaker for the event, Diana Bass, offered teachings and wisdom that helped clergy redefine our motives, views, and our experience in ministry through her presentations. From lessons on the importance of sharing gratitude to ways of rebooting our ministry, clergy members were given tools that encouraged us to see God active in our ministry and not to be discouraged. In a time where many communities and churches are needing assurance and hope, I was empowered to try new ways in conducting our ministry, reassess my focus, and learning to become more creative and intentional about establishing relationships and making more disciples of Jesus Christ.

Also in September, we have been reminded of the assurance and abundance we can embrace in God. The “Fall is Back BBQ” was a great time and space for our church to invite God into our relationships with our community by sharing a meal.

Revelation 21:5

Through our campaign to repair and remodel the parsonage, we have been abundantly blessed by the love and grace of God from the support of church members, friends, other ministries, and by unknown donors. These two examples from the month of September alone have served as an assurance of the new and marvelous provision God has set before us.

During the month of October, let us be challenged to find new ways to engage with God. Let us take new approaches to live out our faith. We have the opportunity to try new ministries, and new experiences.

Let us continue to be in prayer and studying the Word, to engage in holy discernment, trusting that God will continue to give us hope and healing even in the times of challenge.

Blessings,

Pastor Martin Finau

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS

On All Saints’ Day, United Methodists publicly remember and honor those who have passed. This year, it will be celebrated on November 3rd during 10:00 am worship.

Here at Temple City First UMC, our congregation will be lighting candles and calling out the names of those lost in the previous year as a way of hon-oring the impact their lives have had on us.

It is a day of remembrance for the saints, with the New Testament meaning of all Christian people of every time and place. We celebrate the commun-ion of saints as we remember the dead, both of the Church universal and of our local congregations.

Please send into our office the names of those family, friends and loved ones you wish to celebrate so that we may honor them in our service.

NEW STUDY

We begin our new season on October 1st by calling on residents of Santa Anita Convalescent. Our study of the book, Reckless Love, will begin on October 8th.

Reckless Love deepens our understanding of how to follow the Greatest Commandment, Jesus’ call to love our neighbor, and we will learn how our love for the people around us can completely renew our faith and give us a new experience of loving God.

A Guide to Walking Meditation

Walking meditation can be just a profound as sitting meditation and has the advantage of bringing the meditative experience into your activities.

Where and when? This meditation is best done outdoors. Set aside at least 20 minutes for your walking meditation and try not to combine it with anything else, like doing errands or walking briskly for exercise. Let this be a walk just for meditation so that you can sink into the experi-ence with your undivided attention. Do not walk with a destination. Wander aimlessly without arriving, being somewhere rather than going somewhere.

Brain power is improved by walking one and a half hours per week. Cognitive function is improved by exercising body and mind.

Walking strengthens the heart. Studies of both men and women show that the incidence of heart attack is reduced by 35 percent.

Symptoms of depression are eased by walking for 30 minutes three to five times per week.

Other benefits of walking are shown to reduce the risks for certain dis-eases such as Type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer.

So, walking really is good for the mind, body and soul.

CALLING ALL ANGELS!

Christmas is sooner than you think.

Now is the time to plan ahead for Christmas. We are keeping with our tradition at TCUMC and you make the difference.

As always, look for the tree that will be coming at Advent. On it will be paper angels for you to select. Each one represents people from our community and their specific Christmas wishes. You pick an angel and then fulfill the need!

Give and receive Joy! There will be more information in next months’s Chimes issue. - Hilde Garrison
