1 GREETINGS FROM THE SNA OF SC PRESIDENT October 18, 2018 Dear SNA of SC members and friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 65 th Annual School Nutrition Association of South Carolina (SNA of SC) Conference. Roland Cabading and his committee have planned a wonderful conference for you. This year’s theme is “Food for Thought”. Over the next few days you will have the opportunity to attend classes learning new skills and gathering information. These classes will help you innovate and recharge your school meal program in weeks and months ahead. Use the next few days to network with peers and take back fresh new ideas to inspire your district. Enjoy the EXPO as vendors present new products. Each of you are part of a national safety net that ensures all students have access to healthy affordable meals that are critical to their success in classroom and life. Thank you to Mrs. Joyce Lovett, Ms. Diane Gillie, Mr. Roland Cabading and the entire conference committee for a well-planned conference that will surely elevate you to new levels. Thank you also to our industry partners for their support in providing needed products to serve the children of South Carolina. Have fun learning and laughing with each other. Also, don’t forget to enjoy the beach and take home some “sand in your shoes”. Sharon Hunt President, School Nutrition Association of South Carolina

WELCOME FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR

October 18, 2018

It has been an honor to serve as the chair for the SNA of SC Conference Planning Committee. The success of organizing the 65th Annual State Conference and Exposition was not possible without the support of four groups or individuals. First, the members of the planning committee. They set time aside of their busy schedules to follow through with our action plan for the conference. For their contributions, I sincerely thank all of them. Second, our industry partners who have provided support for trainings and events for the conference. Their support allows the planning committee to try new things to make the conference better each year. Third, the SC Department of Education’s Office of Health & Nutrition, who are providing resources for USDA Professional Standard Training for all SNA of SC members attending the conference. Lastly, I want to thank our SNA of SC Executive Director, Mrs. Joyce Lovett and Treasurer, Ms. Diane Gillie for their guidance when planning the conference. Their insight kept me and the committee on track. The theme of the conference “Food for Thought” is an important motto for you as school food service professionals for three reasons. One, every day you serve students you are supporting the education process in your district. Meals you serve allow students to focus in the classroom. Also, you are helping shape students’ food choices for the future with healthy choices. Two, you will acquire at this year’s conference training and knowledge to help you serve students in your district. There will be sessions on guidelines, kitchen operations and classes that direct your thinking outside the cafeteria doors. Lastly, the theme should inspire you with ideas that you can use at work, and in your personal life. Take one idea and put it into action. All the rotating sessions are coded for USDA Professional Standard Training. It is important that school food service professionals attend as many sessions as they can while at the conference. The rotating sessions were decided from survey results and findings from past Administrative Reviews conducted by the SDE Office of Health & Nutrition. Please know that it is important to complete conference surveys. My hope is that you enjoy the conference that was planned for you. To get the most out of the conference I suggest three things you should do. One, meet new colleagues from other districts. This is a great way to collaborate on ideas and network. Two, take the opportunity to learn from the rotating sessions and participate in scheduled events. Lastly, have fun! It is always fun when you learn and make new friends. Roland Cabading Roland Cabading, Conference Chair

In Remembrance of Benjamin James Madden

November 1, 1968 – July 9, 2018

To have known Ben was to know a gentleman of a quiet nature, one who loved and adored his family and friends. You could find him spending quality time with his wife, Kathleen and their son, Asher. Ben enjoyed running, kayaking, coaching children’s soccer and spending time with his family, especially playing chess with his son. He has left his family and friends with gifts of kindness, strength, compassion and steadfastness. He loved life and had an easy smile. Ben was born in Madison, Wisconsin and grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was a graduate of Clemson University with an MBA from the University of South Carolina. He had a quick mind and an encyclopedic knowledge of sports and history. At Clemson, he was a member of the United Nations Debate Team. He was a dedicated employee at the South Carolina Department of Education, Office of Health and Nutrition as the Commodities Section’s Team Leader. In 2016, Ben served as Interim Director of the Office until that position was filled. The office has truly experienced a void but remembers his quiet confidence and attention to detail. We miss him!

Remembering Ben with respect and honor. The Office of Health and Nutrition

and School Nutrition Association of South Carolina

She currently serves as the Education Chair of the SNA of SC. Donna believes if children are well nourished, that they can learn and society will benefit from their contributions. She is dedicated to the work that we do for the students of South Carolina and believes that taking the SNS Exam is an opportunity to validate her knowledge.

Denise Garvin

Denise feels the best decision she has ever made was to become a part of the Chesterfield County School District Foodservice Department. Since 2000 she began as a baker and is now cafeteria manager. She has served as President of her local SNA of SC chapter and as the Sand Hills Area Representative on the SNA of SC Executive Board. Denise shares that school foodservice is her career of choice and she desires to continue to grow in knowledge in this field.

October 18, 2018

To our Industry Partners, School Nutrition Family, and Supporters, I am truly honored to serve as the Expo Chair as well as the Executive Director of the School Nutrition Association of South Carolina. It is truly a warming experience to be involved with a wonderful group of individuals who are dedicated to the nutritional well-being of our children. To our industry partners, you have gone above and beyond again this year in making sure that

products are displayed and available for our conference attendees to view, sample, and assist them in making informed decisions regarding quality and product availability. Without you, our expo and conference would not be successful. We appreciate you and your tireless efforts in providing us with the needed products to serve our children. I would personally like to thank the Board and the Association Members for giving me the opportunity to serve in this position. It has been a wonderful experience and I enjoy working with each of you. To Todd, our conference chair, great job on planning a wonderful conference. To Leon, our state president, you are dedicated to the association and I appreciate you for all that you do. I cannot close without thanking Diane. Diane, you are always there to advise, listen, suggest, and most of all assist with everything. You are truly a blessing and I appreciate and love you for all that you do. Thanks to all. Enjoy the expo and conference. Please know that I am here to assist and don’t hesitate to contact me at any time. With love, thanks, and joy,

Joyce Joyce C. Lovett Expo Chair & Executive Director
