Isaiah has the vineyard under good and faithful care, but still it produces wild grapes. In the Gospel, the vineyard presumably had a good harvest, but the workers re- fuse to give any of the grapes to the landowner. The question for us is, which parable is about me? Do I ignore all that God does to help me be a good disciple? Am I too busy to take time to pray or read the Bible? Do I hold onto grudges instead of forgiving and releasing them? Do I only go to church when someone drags me there, or only at Christmas and Easter? (If that were true, I probably would not be reading this bulletin.) Do I decline the invita- tions to go on a retreat? Am I afraid to share my faith with someone who needs encouragement? If any of these are true, I might be like the vineyard in the first reading, producing no fruit despite all the opportunities God has given me. Or we may be the other side of the coin. We had our children baptized when they were babies, sent them to the parish school or religion classes. We went to church every Sunday and took them with us. We gave them as good an example as we could, teaching them to love others and be generous with what they have. Yet they grew up and drifted away from the faith. Then we have to remember how patient God is with us, God's people who don't always produce the fruits of faith. The Gospel is a little more difficult to relate to. The tenants in the parable refer to those who mistreated or killed the prophets sent by God or the people who would have Jesus crucified. Yet the kingdom of God is still being pro- claimed in spite of them. God is patient with them. Look what happened to Saul, who persecuted many Christians be- fore he became one himself. In our second reading he tells us to follow his example as he follows Christ. Then, he says, the peace of God will be with us, too (Philippians 4:6-9). Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Where Are the Grapes? Jesus' parable is a little different from the one in the first reading. Isaiah has the vineyard under good and faithful care, but still it produces wild grapes. In the Gospel, the vineyard presumably had a good harvest, but the workers re-fuse to give any of the grapes to the landowner. (If that were true, I probably would not be reading this bulletin.) Do I decline the invita-tions to go on a retreat? Yet the kingdom of God is still being pro-claimed in spite of them. God is patient with them. Look what happened to Saul, who persecuted many Christians be-fore he became one himself. In our second reading he tells us to follow his example as he follows Christ. Then, he says, the peace of God will be with us, too (Philippians 4:6-9). Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NEWS & EVENTS FOR EVERYONE….

Rˎ˜˙ˎˌ˝ L˒ˏˎ C˘˛˗ˎ˛ Be Not Afraid - The Vocation of Peacemaking - Our biblical heritage and our body of tradition make the voca-tion of peacemaking mandatory. Authentic prayer, wor-ship and sacramental life challenge us to conversion of our hearts and summon us to works of peace. These con-cerns are obviously not ours alone, but are the work of the entire community of faith and of all people of good will. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray - Every liturgy is a call to and celebration of peace. The cause of peace should be constantly reflected in our prayers of petition. In our schools and seminaries, our religious education and for-mation efforts, our colleges and universities, we need to continue and intensify our efforts to integrate Catholic teaching on justice, nonviolence and peace into the curric-ulum and broader life of our educational endeavors. In our advocacy and citizenship efforts and through legislative networks and broader participation in the political process, Catholics can take our principles of peacemaking into the public arena, where they can help shape an active and constructive U.S. role in the world.

USE OF INCENSE AT MASS From QUESTION CORNER - Father Ken Doyle (The Messenger) Q. I am a Catholic, but I have forgotten why incense is sometimes used at Mass. Please explain, especially with regards to its use at funerals. (Aumsville, Oregon) The smoke of burning incense is seen by the church as an image of the prayers of the faithful rising to heaven. That symbolism is seen in Psalm 141:2: “Let my prayer be incense before you; by uplifted hands an evening offering.” Incense is also mentioned in the New Testament Book of Revelation (8:4) as an image of the worship offered to the Almighty in heaven; “The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.” The use of incense was common in Jewish worship and carried over into Christian practice. In Exodus, Chapter 30, the Lord instructs Moses to build an altar of incense. Christian ritual books as early as the seventh century mark the use of incense in church services on Good Friday. The current General Instruction of the Roman Missal (the church’s “guidebook” for liturgical celebrations) permits the use of incense at several different times during the Mass, including at the Gospel and at the elevation of the conse-crated bread and wine. At a funeral Mass, as well as symbolizing the prayers of the congregation directed toward heaven, incensing the casket honors the body of the deceased, which through baptism became a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Vineyard and Cornerstone. The Bible stories today are pretty straightfor-ward. We are the vineyard – the owner is God. The cor-nerstone is Jesus – we are the building. What does it mean to be the cherished plant – to be watered and pruned and hoed by God? What does it mean to be laid brick by brick on the one and sure foundation of Christ Jesus? • How will I be fruitful, be generous, be good? • How will I stay attached to Jesus? • How will I cherish my chosen place on vine and in

building?
