Joseph Oganda DECEMBER 17, 2017 Third Sunday of Advent Reasons to Rejoice Saint Paul seems to be throwing out a handful of sayings that may sound overly optimistic, but are actually very practical. "Rejoice always? Who can do that?" It sounds absurd, but the next two lines give it context: If we pray con- stantly and thank God for all that happens to us, we have reason to rejoice. Whatever happens is the will of God for us. Even the bad things, things we don't like, can be allowed by God, so that God can bring good out of them. God allows sin because it leads to forgiveness, an experience of God's love for us. And God allows even death, because God can bring us to eternal life. The next two sayings may be a little obscure. When Paul tells us not to quench the Spirit, he means we should be open to what the Holy Spirit moves us to do. "Prophetic utterances" refer to things that other people were inspired to proclaim. If we pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17) we won't be so distracted by the things of this world that we can- not hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit in us. We won't be so critical of others that we miss what the Spirit is telling us through them. How do we know if something really is from the Spirit? The next phrase helps with that: Test everything. Retain what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Use the scriptures, the teachings of the Church, and your conscience to decide whether the Spirit is moving you, or if advice you hear is worthwhile. And most of all trust God to help with all this be- cause God wants us to be holy. God will make us holy if we only allow it. Then we will be ready for the coming of the Lord, whether through the sacraments, the celebration of Christmas, or God's final coming in glory. I'd say that's a rea- son to rejoice. Retirement Fund for Religious Collection Religious give thanks. A religious sister writes, “When we see the generous response of so many thou-sands of persons in order to help us, religious men and women, we are left speechless.” Senior sisters, broth-ers, and religious order priests across the country send heartfelt thanks and prayers for our donation to last week’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection.

The Giving Tree… The Giving Tree is again placed in the vestibule with the names of our nursing home residents and sug-gestions for gifts. Please take an ornament and place your purchased item under the tree wrapped or un-wrapped with the ornament/name by Wednesday, De-cember 20th. How can I help bring a “year of favor” to the world, to the community, to those I know?

R L C R L C Advent - Preparing for Jesus – This week Thursday is the winter solstice, when we experience the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Advent is about waiting in the uncertainty of darkness. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Ponder the times you have waited in the dark with a family member. Perhaps it was illness, or maybe fear, or simply a power outage that kept you in vigil together. Disperse the darkness by keeping your Advent candles burning a bit longer. Pray the Ro-sary and meditate on the Joyful Mysteries.

Third Sunday of Advent – How will I answer? Questions are put to John the Baptist today. Who are you? What do you have to say for yourself? Worthy questions for each of us. • What truth, what goodness will I voice this

week? • What will I do to back up these words? • How can I lead this person, __________________,

to Jesus, the Light of the World?

Diocesan Christmas Collection The 40th Annual Diocesan Christmas Collec-tion will be taken up at all Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The adorers, the people who pray before the Blessed Sacrament during Eucharistic Adoration, would love to pray for the needs of the parish. Each Wednes-day, a book will be positioned near the front of the church during Adoration. Anyone who has a prayer need may write it in the book. Each person who comes into the church to pray during Adoration, will read the prayer in-tentions, and will lift those prayers to the Lord during their hour of Adoration. We will keep the book and add to the prayer list each week. If you have a prayer request, con-tact any of the adorers or Chris Kelley at 559-6581.
