SLEMS students are combating Climate Change during the month of October during this year’s first school-wide service project. Spearheaded by 8th Grade students, all students and faculty members are making a pledge to reduce their carbon footprint by doing such things as turning off their lights when leaving a room, recycling paper, and reusing plastic when possible. Some 8th Graders have been going into lower grade level classrooms to educate the younger students about climate change and how to prevent it from further

damaging our planet. Other students are contributing by creating visual representations of participation among classes to encourage friendly competition in the efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. As a community, St. Lawrence Elementary and Middle School is starting small to fight climate change and protect the planet we love and we hope to inspire others to do the same!

For the next three Sundays, the Second Reading comes from 2 Thessalonians. The dating of the book is believed by many scholars to be written between 52-54 AD, shortly after the First Letter to the Thessalonians was written. Thessalonica was the second city in Europe where Paul helped to create an organized Christian community. The traditional view is that the second letter was probably written from Corinth not many months after the first.

In this letter, Paul writes to encourage the Thessalonians to resist false prophecy regarding the parousia, or second coming of Christ, and endure patiently until the day of the Lord arrives.

Today’s passage begins with Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonian community found at the end of the letter’s first chapter. In this heartfelt prayer, Paul emphasizes God’s grace now working in the Thessalonians so that the Lord Jesus is glorified in them and they are glorified in him. This shared glorification occurs because of the grace of God active in Jesus Christ.

The second paragraph of the reading focuses on the parousia. Paul asks the Thessalonians not to panic because of news, received either from false teachings, spoken words, or a letter falsely attributed to him, predicted that the day of the Lord is imminent. “Remain calm” is Paul’s message to his brothers and sisters in faith. Christ’s Second Coming will occur in the future at a time known only to the Father, and for Paul’s audience, thought to be imminent. It will complete the life of faith when Christ will assemble with those judged to be faithful.

Paul’s message of calm is to help us find ways to live faithfully in this interim of unknown duration until Christ comes again. Even now, living by the Gospel constitutes a life with and in God’s grace.
