dear friends,

We are delighted to welcome you to Opera Atelier’s production of Mozart’s outrageous comedy Abduction from the Seraglio. When we unveiled our new production in 2008, Abduction from the Seraglio had not been seen in Toronto for more than 20 years. Given the charm and accessibility of this opera and its exceptionally beautiful music it seems incredible that it had been ignored for so long.

Abduction from the Seraglio became an instant favourite with our audience members of all ages, and it is particularly gratifying that so many OA subscribers are using this current production as an opportunity to introduce their children and first-time operagoers to Mozart’s music.

Our 2013-2014 season will continue with Opera Atelier’s award-winning production of Lully’s great masterpiece, Persée (at the Elgin Theatre April 26 – May 3, 2014). Persée was long considered the high-water mark of French lyric theatre, and in 2000 Opera Atelier enjoyed the great privilege of bringing the opera to life for the first time since the 1700s.

Persée has also been invited to tour to the Royal Opera House at Versailles following its Toronto performances in April/May 2014. This promises to be a particularly moving experience for all of us given the fact that Persée was the opera chosen to inaugurate the Royal Opera House in 1770, when it celebrated the marriage of Marie Antoinette to the future King of France — Louis XVI.

We are proud to offer you this season which is unique in North America. It would not be possible without our ongoing collaboration with Canada’s incomparable Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, our performers, designers, administration, donors, and committed ticket-buyers like yourselves, who continue to allow us the luxury of exploring the most thrilling and satisfying repertoire imaginable.

Thank you for joining us.

I am thrilled to welcome you to Opera Atelier’s 2013-2014 season. Our season features Mozart’s colourful comic opera, Abduction from the Seraglio which you will be enjoying today, as well as the return of one of Opera Atelier’s landmark productions, Persée (April 26 - May 3), which we will also be touring to Versailles.

In addition to the stunning operas on our stage and our return to Versailles, we have an exciting season of special events planned. Our fundraising gala, the Versailles Gala, will take place on April 2, 2014. This annual event continues to grow bigger every year, and we are thrilled to be exploring a

new venue: Toronto’s glamourous Four Seasons Hotel. Our incredible Gala Committee has been hard at work on plans for the evening and we are looking forward to sharing more details with you! As always, this special occasion will give guests the opportunity to see Opera Atelier’s singers and young dancers in an intimate setting, as well as delicious food, great company and the chance to bid on some fabulous auction items. Funds raised through the event will support a broad range of our artistic activities including our young artist training programs. Please mark Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014 in your calendars and join with us for this special evening.

For those of you wishing to deepen your Opera Atelier experience, becoming a member of our Friends program will give you the opportunity to join us at a number of behind-the-scenes events. Many newcomers to the program tell us they had no idea what they were missing!

Thank you for joining with us for Mozart’s marvellous Abduction from the Seraglio. An enthusiastic audience is the greatest gift to any artist, and your presence here today means so much to all of us.

– Bryan Graham Chair, Board of Directors

It is with great excitement that I welcome you all to Opera Atelier’s 2013-2014 season. The past twenty-four months have been a whirlwind of activity and it does not seem to be slowing down.

From the Royal Opera House to the Glimmerglass Festival in the summer of 2012, to The Magic Flute tours in Penn State and Columbus, Ohio, to Marshall and Jeannette’s triumphant production of Mozart’s Lucio Silla at the Salzburg Festival, things have been tremendously busy and the excitement continues to build.

I would like to extend special thanks to our patrons, donors, sponsors and all levels of government for their unwavering support. It is because of you that Opera Atelier continues to make wonderful theatre that is being internationally acknowledged and celebrated.

Thank you for joining us this season and I hope you will consider travelling with us for our return to the Royal Opera House at the Palace of Versailles in spring 2014.

Marshall Pynkoski & Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg

Director Marshall PynkoskiMarshall Pynkoski’s fascination with music, theatre and dance of the 17th and 18th centuries began in classes with the late Leonard Crainford and John Marshall, respectively Chairman and Major Examiner, Royal Academy of Dancing in London. His further studies with Florentina Lojekova (Master Artist of Czech Republic) and

David Moroni (the Royal Winnipeg Ballet) were pivotal in his decision to pursue a career in ballet.

Early in Mr. Pynkoski’s professional career, he had the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies of Baroque opera and ballet in Paris. His studies continued with renowned Baroque dramaturge Professor Dene Barnett at Flinders University in South Australia.

In 1985 he founded Opera Atelier with his partner Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg and he has since directed a wide range of period productions of Baroque and early Classical opera and ballet in close collaboration with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He has acted as guest instructor at the Centre for Baroque Studies under conductor Marc Minkowski with whom he premiered North America’s first period productions of The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Mr. Pynkoski has collaborated with many of the finest artists in the world of early music and his productions of opera and ballet have toured throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

He is a recipient of numerous awards including the Toronto Arts Award, the Ruby Award for outstanding contribution to opera in Canada, and the TIME Magazine award for Classical music. He was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres following his international tour of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre. Mr. Pynkoski most recently directed Mozart’s Lucio Silla for the Salzburg Festival in 2013.

Choreographer Jeannette Lajeunesse ZinggCanadian choreographer Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg has performed and choreographed internationally for more than two decades. She received her training at the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, in Copenhagen and Paris. She credits her teachers with instilling in her a love and respect for the history of classical ballet.

Through her most important teacher/mentors — John Marshall and Florentina Lojekova — she can trace a direct line to such dance luminaries as Idzikowski, Fokine, Espinoza, Perrot and Vestris.

As a young dancer, she relocated to Paris where she undertook in-depth studies of Baroque dancing from original source material. These studies were supplemented by intensive training in North America by Wendy Hilton and Sandra Caverly — experts in Baroque dancing and Bournonville technique respectively. Since then, Ms Zingg has choreographed and performed in more than 70 productions for Opera Atelier, which she founded in 1985 with her partner, Marshall Pynkoski.

Opera Atelier productions have been performed in Versailles, at the BBC Proms, Houston Grand Opera and the Glimmerglass Festival. Opera Atelier has also introduced period productions of Mozart to audiences in Japan, Singapore and Korea.

Ms Zingg has received numerous awards including the prestigious Toronto Arts Award, the Opera Canada Ruby Award for outstanding achievement in the field of opera in Canada in addition to having been named by TIME Magazine as one of Canada’s most influential artists in the field of Classical music. She has collaborated with conductors Marc Minkowski, Christopher Hogwood, Andrew Parrott, David Fallis and Stefano Montanari and choreographed for dancers from the National Ballet of Canada, The Scapino Ballet, The Dutch National Ballet and Opera Atelier. She has also choreographed and performed in numerous film projects including Rhombus Media’s “Master Peter’s Puppet Show”, “Romeos and Juliets” and “The Sorceress” opposite Dame Kiri te Kanawa. In the summer of 2013, Ms Zingg choreographed dances for Mozart's Lucio Silla for the Salzburg Festival.

abduction from the seraglio – SYNOPSIS

OVERTUREDuring the overture we witness the abduction of the noblewoman Konstanze, her English maid Blonde and the latter’s lover Pedrillo, by Pasha Selim and his men. They are forcibly taken from an English frigate while Konstanze’s lover Belmonte is left behind.

ACT IBelmonte, after much searching, arrives at the palace of the Pasha Selim. He is met by Osmin, who oversees the Pasha’s harem. Belmonte inquires about his servant Pedrillo who now serves the Pasha as a slave. Belmonte is unaware that Pedrillo’s lover (Blonde) has been given to Osmin as a wife. Osmin dismisses Belmonte’s inquiries and departs. Pedrillo appears and explains that Konstanze has been forced to enter Pasha Selim’s harem as his newest wife. The two men plot to rescue their respective lovers and escape.

A chorus and corps de ballet made up of Janissaries and wives of the royal harem herald the entrance of Pasha Selim. Konstanze refuses the Pasha’s advances, confessing her love and loyalty to Belmonte. She exits, and Pedrillo enters with his master (Belmonte) introducing him to the Pasha as a visiting architect. The Pasha agrees that Belmonte may enter his service but following the Pasha’s departure, Osmin tries unsuccessfully to block the men’s entrance into the palace.

Director’s Notes

Abduction from the Seraglio presents us with a classic Commedia dell’Arte scenario set in a fashionably exotic location. The Italian commedia is full of plays in which a beautiful young person (male or female) is sequestered away from the world by a controlling guardian or spouse. The delivery of the young person from their captivity becomes the driving force of the drama and is usually effected by a lover who is more suited to the captive in age and/or rank. Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio allows this classic Commedia dell’Arte plot line to be played out to brilliant effect as the Turkish and European worlds collide in hilarious contrast.

– Marshall Pynkoski

ACT IIBlonde quarrels with Osmin, informing him that English girls are incapable of being slaves, and do not take orders even when in Turkey. Osmin exits in a fury. Konstanze enters and reflects that the Pasha is becoming increasingly frustrated with her rejection of his advances. The Pasha appears and threatens Konstanze with torture if she does not allow him his conjugal rights within 24 hours.

INTERMISSIONKonstanze departs and Pedrillo enters, telling Blonde that Belmonte has arrived with a ship, anchored off-shore. The men plan to abduct the girls at midnight after subduing Osmin with alcohol. Osmin appears and is plied with a Cyprian wine and while he sleeps off the effects of his indulgence, the four lovers plan their escape.

ACT IIIIn the palace garden at midnight, Belmonte and Pedrillo, armed with a ladder, prepare to abduct their lovers. Belmonte successfully rescues Konstanze, but as Pedrillo is fetching Blonde, Osmin appears and apprehends the four of them. Pasha Selim enters and immediately condemns them to torture. The Pasha later reconsiders the sentence after recognizing Belmonte as the son of his most bitter enemy. He chooses instead to teach his enemy a lesson in civility, opting to free all four of the lovers and sending them home. The opera concludes with choruses and dances celebrating the clemency of Pasha Selim.

Choreographer’s Notes

Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio (or Belmonte and Konstanze) premiered in Vienna on July 16, 1782. It was written for the Burgtheater, established by Emperor Joseph II as an avenue for German works of music theatre. Abduction from the Seraglio had an immediate success and became Mozart’s most popular opera during his lifetime. Ballet was part of any evening at the theatre in the 18th century and Mozart included wonderful dances in his operas. The idea of a Turkish theme had been in existence since the previous century (witness Lully’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, 1670) and indeed the Grand Turk had been adopted by the Commedia dell’Arte as a stock figure. Italy, France and Austria were familiar with Turkish customs due to diplomatic ties and various sieges and battles. In a letter dated August 11, 1781 Mozart writes with obvious relish that he is writing “Turkish” music that will give the piece an exotic flavour.

The opera libretto is clearly based on a stock Commedia dell’Arte scenario including a pair of lovers, conniving servants and the Grand Turk (Osmin) as the lecherous character pursuing the young Blonde (only Selim appears as an unusual addition to the cast). Mozart was very familiar with this form of theatre, as well as being an accomplished dancer himself. In 1783, he wrote to his father asking him to send him his Harlequin costume, which he wore in a masquerade-performance at the Redenthensaal in Vienna, “I composed the scenario and the music, the dancing master kindly controlled our steps, and I must tell you, we really played quite well”. Commedia dell’Arte traditionally included dancing — and Mozart’s score provides marvelous opportunities to present Turkish influenced costumes, weapons and percussive instruments in a series of dances, which have been choreographed in period style in the same lighthearted and energetic vein as the music.

– Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg

“ When the dancers sweep across the stage in the jewel-coloured costumes … one’s breath is literally taken away by the combined artistry on display.”

– Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star, April 15, 2012

When Mozart premiered Abduction from the Seraglio in 1782 the Turkish siege of Vienna was a distant and triumphant memory, long since commemorated by the invention of that forever-popular crescent-shaped pastry known as the croissant. The Viennese, like many of their European neighbours, could now fearlessly luxuriate in the craze for all things exotic and with his comic opera featuring a pseudo-Turkish score Mozart enjoyed an enormous success.

Artists and designers in 18th century Europe expressed their fascination with the east by dressing familiar forms in the colours, patterns and what they perceived to be authentic decorative details of far-off lands. The results were usually light-hearted and fantastical and exerted a powerful charm. Mozart’s opera had the same genesis and continues to have much the same effect. A Commedia dell’Arte plot (featuring hapless aristocratic lovers, wily servants and a buffoon villain) was set in a Turkish harem and though not even remotely Middle Eastern in its instrumentation, Mozart’s music conjured images of minarets, walled gardens and parading Janissaries.

My design for the opera straddles both the west and east. I have devised three settings for the opera; the first for the overture is a classic European shipboard scene on a British frigate dominated by an immense Union Jack (minus the cross of St. Andrew that in 1782 was not yet included as part of the flag). In the next scene we find ourselves in the forecourt of Pasha Selim’s palace. Unlike a European palace of the period this Turkish one makes its impact with extravagant multi-coloured tiles framing and decorating a relatively simple stone structure. The third and final setting concludes in the most exotic locale of all, the palace garden, dominated by a luxurious pavilion set with wine and pomegranates, surrounded by golden hills, cypresses and flowering fruit trees.

While the set is conceived to fit a traditional European proscenium stage, it is Turkish architecture, painting and calligraphy that are the primary inspirations for its design. Margaret Lamb’s costumes combine an 18th century European silhouette with brilliant striped silks evoking the Far and Middle East. Together we present a vision of the opera that we hope will be savoured in just the same way as the most decadent Viennese pastry.

– Gerard Gauci

The School of Atelier Ballet (SAB) offers classes led by professional dancers in a caring, creative atmosphere year-round, six days a week. Instruction in ballet, modern dance and historical dance is affordable and enjoyable for both aspiring professionals and recreational dancers. SAB also provides an intensive summer program in which students study various forms of dance. Students from the SAB also participate in various outreach performances throughout the year across the city of Toronto through the Dance Through Time program, which traces the history of dance from the Renaissance right through to the Romantic era (15th to 19th centuries), and provides educational and entertaining commentary that puts each dance in a historical context.

Opera Atelier’s Making of an Opera (MOAO) has influenced hundreds of teachers and thousands of students across the GTA over the last 15 years. Aimed primarily towards high school students,

workshops and demonstrations include historical perspectives, set and costume design, wigs and makeup, careers in the arts, music, dance and stage fighting. This informative and hands-on learning experience culminates in attendance at the dress rehearsal performance.

OA’s numerous outreach performances and workshops give opera-lovers of all ages the opportunity to hear, learn about, and discuss all aspects of the production with guest soloists and members of the Opera Atelier creative team.

Each evening during our productions, we also offer interesting and informative pre-performance chats. Pre-performance chats are held 45 minutes before each performance on the lower level at the Elgin Lounge, where speakers will discuss the production and answer audience questions.

For more information on any of our education and outreach programs please visit operaatelier.com.

Under the direction of founders Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, Opera Atelier has been acclaimed throughout Canada, Houston, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, Stuttgart, Halle, Bremen, London (BBC Proms), Paris, Versailles, Montreux, Citta di Castello, Singapore, Japan and Seoul, Korea.
