$500 (up to $1000 for a

Congratulations to the

parents of these students.

This is a great sign of

commitment and passion

for social justice that will change the

students‟ lives in many ways.

First Meeting for El Otro Lado:

Monday October 3, 2011, 5:30-

7pm, Room 206. Parent Meeting

from 7:00-7:30pm.

New Group: MALOKAI from Mrs. Brady

This group is a result of a

junior social justice project done

by Alina Valle „12. Alina researched

the areas of bullying and

discrimination felt by youth at the

high school and junior high school

level. She was inspired to begin this

new group to help promote the

dignity of each and every one of us.

Sr. Odessa and Mrs. Karen Brady

are the faculty sponsors.

MALOKAI works to make sure

that every student hears the

message of being loved by God.

MALOKAI is working on

presentations we will give to

the youth of our diocese at the

Diocesan Youthfest in

October. We are working on

anti-bullying messages as well

as messages of love and

respect of others for this

event.

A new group has formed at San

Miguel High School. The

purpose of this new group,

MALOKAI, is to help

educate the student body

about seeing and

respecting the dignity that

each and every one of us

has through God.

MALOKAI means “altogether”.

We are all together in our love

for God and God loving us.

We ask for everyone‟s

support of the Fry‟s Cool

Cash program. Additionally,

we say thank you to all who

have contributed ink

cartridges to our recycling

program at San Miguel. All

funds raised are channeled

back to student activities such

as athletics, Lasallian Youth,

Club Pagasa, and the Art festival.

Our next meeting will be held

on October 13th at 5:30 p.m.

The San Miguel Parent group

invites parents to attend a

monthly meeting with

Mr. Reyes every second

Thursday of the month in

the Library. Parents get

together to stay informed on

upcoming school events and

activities, as well as to build

community with other

parents of San Miguel.

PTO Updates

Get involved with

PTO to support our

students!

Help San Miguel at no

cost to you!

P A G E 3

San Miguel‟s Corporate Intern-

ship Program (CIP) has added a

new business partner!

TriSports.com, an online

retailer for triathlon equipment,

apparel and nutritional needs, will

have four student employees

working in their Tucson store in

early October. The students will

be screening and directing

incoming calls to

customer service

representatives as

well as helping with

order fulfillment.

The CIP coordinators

have been busy this

month visiting freshman student

employees at their jobs. These

visits usually involve a 15 – 20

minute observation of the student

employee followed by a meeting

with the student‟s supervisor.

The coordinator and supervisor

review the workplace performance

of the student employee and look

for ways to improve the

experience for everyone involved.

A day or two after the site visit,

Corporate Internship Program the coordinator meets with the student employee on

campus to review the site visit. All student employees

will be formally evaluated in December and May.

On October 7th, CIP will be hosting a luncheon

on campus for all supervisors who are new to

working with San Miguel students. These luncheons

provide valuable opportunities for us to share the

mission of the school and the effective practices that

help create successful workplace experiences for our

student employees and business partners. CIP will host

three of these lunches throughout the school year.

San Miguel Corporate Internship continues to

look for jobs to provide opportunities for our

students to pay for the majority of their tuition

at San Miguel High School. Please call Mark

Neimeyer at (520) 294-6403 x1429 if you would like

more information on our work-study program.

Students are

on time,

prepared,

and reliable!

Dean’s Corner

www.sanmiguelcristorey.org

We have instituted a new policy this

year in an attempt to cut down on our

biggest problem, morning tardiness.

Whenever a student is late to school

in the morning, that student is

automatically assigned detention that

is held at lunch. Arriving with a

doctor‟s excuse is the only way a

student will not be assigned

detention. A tardy student is

allowed to do schoolwork during

detention and has the opportunity to

get the school lunch.

We have begun to use texting as well as

email to contact both students and

parents in our attempts to improve

communication. Please feel free to

contact Mr. Moskal at x1420 or Sister

Odessa at x1417 for any reason.

Hispanic Honor Society Heritage Festival from Mrs. Rosales The Hispanic Honor Society is working on the 2011 Heritage Festival! The festival includes:

cultural information, music, folkloric dance, FOOD, clothing, “fashion show” as a parade

with traditional clothes, and more!!!

This event will be on October 19 at 6pm – 7:30 pm.

From the Registrar November menus are due no later

than Friday, October 14.

Photo Retakes are

scheduled for October 3.

College and Career Counseling from Ms. Renteria and Mrs. Paz

The months of

October and

November will be

dedicated to

scholarships.

Weekly scholarship

opportunities will

be announced over

the intercom during

announcements.

Please be sure that your student stops

by the counseling center for more

information. Students can also begin

the scholarship process by creating a

profile on scholarship websites like:

www.fastweb.com

www.meritaide.com

www.cappex.com

The Explore (09) and PSAT (10

and 11) will be administered on

Oct. 12th. Your student will need

two number 2 pencils and a

calculator for this test. Be sure to

have your student on campus

early on the morning of the 12th.

They will need extra time to

situate themselves and prepare

for the test.

October 5th will be the TUSD

College Fair at the TCC from 6:30-9:00

p.m. we encourage all students to

attend. This fair is free and will have

over 250 universities present.

Oct. 13th we will host a parent

meeting at 5:30 to discuss and explain

the purpose of the PSAT and PLAN

Tests. In addition we will also discuss

test scores and how these relate to

college entrance.

Oct 20th we will host a Bridge Parent

meeting at 5:30 to discuss the progress

of Freshman Bridge students.

SENIOR PARENTS!

Please remind your student to keep on

track with all of their college applica-

tions. Your FASFA pin application for

both you and your student should be completed

by November 16th. AIMS Test will be available

for seniors who qualify for The Arizona Board

of Regent‟s High Honors Tuition Scholarship.

Qualifying seniors with a 3.5 or better will have

the opportunity to test Oct. 25, 26th.

Seniors are all registered for the Oct. ACT on

Oct 22nd. Please check with your student to

discuss their test location. On the morning of

testing they will need to be at their testing site

by 7:30.

Students eligible to SAT fee waivers should stop

by the counseling center to register for the

November or December SAT tests.

Healthy Living Program from Ms. Schwindenhammer

As many of you know, San Miguel

High School is committed to caring

for each student, and caring about

your health is no exception. But

did you know our school has a

“Healthy Living Program” this

year? That‟s right! One of our

many focuses this year is healthy

eating at school.

What you eat has an effect on your

entire well-being by helping you:

1. Have more energy

2. Think and learn better

3. Get sick less often

4. Do better in sports

5. Feel happier

As part of our program, we are doing

weekly surveys on the lunches to help

make them healthier AND tastier!

Surveys are available online and

through email. If you are bringing

your lunch to school, try to bring a

balanced meal that includes fruits,

veggies, dairy, and protein. Great

Idea: replace white bread with

wheat tortillas for a tasty wrap!

Don‟t forget to drink water because

it affects brain power and energy.

Just think, you can get rid of a head-

ache or stomach ache just by eating

and drinking right!

Last but not least, emotionally healthy

people tend to be healthier and in

control of their behavior.

Great idea: try taking 5 deep breaths; as you

inhale count to 6, as you exhale count back to

zero… see if by the end of the week you can do

that three times a day!
