It is always so nice to see all of you—many of you for the first time, and many of you I already know! It takes time and effort to attend these events and I was so grateful for your presence. At the Back-To-School Night general session, my main focus was on the Bishop Montgomery Technology Plan. At Bishop Montgomery the goal of incorporating technology into our classrooms is not to be fashionable, but to make learning more meaningful for our student, that is, to enhance the curriculum. This requires that we find different ways to deliver instruction to meet the needs of our 21 st century learners. I encourage you to visit our website to read our technology plan. Our most immediate need is to upgrade our wireless infrastructure which will cost in excess of $160,000. This last week the Ahmanson Foundation awarded us about a third of that amount, we raised approximately $28,000 last year with the Auction for Education, and we continue to write grants and seek donations to make up the difference. In addition, our plan includes the purchase of two more 30 unit Chromebook carts (we already have two) and three 30 unit iPad carts with keyboards, all for teacher use in the classroom. Our Chromebook pilot program has been very successful. Beginning with the Class of 2019, next year’s incoming freshmen, we will begin our 1:1 program so each incoming freshman student will be required to purchase a Chromebook for school use. A Chromebook costs about $200 so it is affordable and very portable. It meets many curricular needs. These are the outlines of the plan, but again, I encourage you to visit our website for complete information. We are very excited about this project! I want to assure you that if you know someone who would like to donate to this effort, or if you would like to do so, I will happily accept your support! It would be money very well spent! You have received the tickets for the fall fundraiser, our one mandatory fundraiser for the year. Proceeds from this fundraiser are applied directly to the school’s operating budget for the current year and help us to meet increasing operational costs. Since the charged tuition primarily pays for faculty and staff salaries and benefits, this fundraiser is essential. I want to thank you for your generous support! October is always an exciting month. I encourage you to carefully review the school calendar, but here are a few dates that deserve particular attention: October 6 th , Monday, Faculty Meeting, 8:45 a.m. start October 8 th , Wednesday, Undergrad Awards, periods 2, 3 in gym October 15 th , PSAT Test Day (11 th grade); SAT Challenge (9 th -10 th grades); Senior Holiday October 20 th , Faculty Faith Formation Day at St. Joseph High School; Student Holiday October 21 st , Unity Mass; Class Color Day October 24 th , 8:45 Start; 8:00 a.m. Black and Gold Breakfast; 12:45 p.m. Homecoming Rally/Fundraiser Drawing; 4:00-7:00 p.m. Homecoming Barbeque; 6:00 p.m. Homecoming Game October 25 th , Homecoming Dance, 7:00-10:00 p.m. Homecoming Week is always exciting and certainly the many events would not be possible without the student government led by Kira Iwai, ASB President and Justina Breen,

Dear Parents,

I want to begin this letter by thanking all of you who attended the Freshman and Senior Meetings prior to Back-to-School Night and for attending Back-to-School Night itself.

This requires that we find different ways to deliver instruction to meet the needs of our 21st century learners.

I encourage you to carefully review the school calendar, but here are a few dates that deserve particular attention:• October 6th, Monday, Faculty Meeting, 8:45 a.m. start• October 8th, Wednesday, Undergrad Awards, periods 2, 3 in gym• October 15th, PSAT Test Day (11th grade); SAT Challenge (9th-10th grades); Senior Holiday• October 20th, Faculty Faith Formation Day at St. Joseph High School; Student Holiday• October 21st, Unity Mass; Class Color Day• October 24th, 8:45 Start; 8:00 a.m. Black and Gold Breakfast; 12:45 p.m. Homecoming

Vice-President and directed by Mrs. McDermott, Dean of Student Life. They deserve many, many thanks for all of their hard work! We have to say thank you as well to the Maintenance Crew who do so much work to make all of the students’ plans possible.

Finally, I want to close with St. Paul’s meditation on love in his letter to the Corinthians. This was the first reading at our first all-school Mass. I pray with you that your children, our students come to understand and grow in this love.

St. Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 13: 1-13

Now I will show you the way which surpasses all others.

If I speak with human tongues and angelic as well, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong, a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and, with full knowledge, comprehend all mysteries, if I have faith great enough to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give everything I have to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not prone to anger; neither does it brood over injuries. Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth. There is no limit to love’s forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure.

Love never fails. Prophecies will cease, tongues will be silent, knowledge will pass away. Our knowledge is imperfect and our prophesying is imperfect. When the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child I used to talk like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When I became a man I put childish ways aside. Now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. My knowledge is imperfect now; then I shall know even as I am known.

There are in the end three things that remain: faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.

I pray for you daily, knowing the many challenges of being a good parent.

WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN

As the school year begins, we would like to welcome our returning and new students to Bishop Montgomery High School. We hope you had a relaxing summer and are ready for the challenges of the 2014-2015 school year. On behalf of our guidance staff, we look forward to working with your children throughout the year.

Standardized TestingRegistration is open for the Fall SAT and ACT. If your student would like to take these standardized test(s) and has not registered yet, please do so as soon as possible. We encourage you to register online, for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com, and for the ACT at www.act.org. Please note that registration for the November SAT and the November ACT is just around the corner.

For students planning to take an SAT II language test with listening, they must do so in November. We encourage students to register early and check with the admissions offices of the schools they plan to apply to to inquire if testing must be completed before December.

Wednesday, October 15th, is the PSAT test day. Freshmen and sophomores will take the SAT Challenge, Juniors will take the PSAT and seniors will have the day off. Students will need to be in their assigned classroom at 8:00am and should be dismissed no later than 11:30am. The results of the exam will be distributed in January.

News for Seniors and Their Parents:On Friday, September 5th the guidance counselors spent a class period with each senior English class. A one-page timeline was distributed and discussed. There is a copy on the website under the Guidance Tab and Senior Information Section. Test dates, registration deadlines, application deadlines, and other important information are included. Also handed out in class were the Parent/Student/Counselor Contract, CSU and UC step by step guidelines to the college application process as well as the Common Application step by step guidelines. Please be sure to ask your student’s for the information or go onto the website to find it. In order to be sure that your son/daughter is on track, in the College Application process, please remind him/her that the following forms were due on Sept 26th: 1. Student/Parent/Counselor Contract to Counselor’s drop box 2. Registration on Common App (if applying to these schools) 3. FERPA Form (for Common App Schools), 4. Resume 5. Data Sheet must be completed in Naviance.

Remember to utilize Family Connection from Naviance. Family Connection is linked with Naviance, which we use in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, it provides up-to-date information that is specific to Bishop Montgomery.Family Connection will allow your student to:• Keep track of the process-Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for

making decisions about colleges and careers• Research colleges-Compare GPA, SAT scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for

students who have applied and been admitted in the past.• College visits- Find out which colleges are visiting our school and when they will be here.• Scholarships- All of the scholarships that we receive in the guidance office will be posted on Family Connection.

Medical Appointments/Attendance: pgs. 12-13 Parent-Student HandbookAs a reminder, students who miss school due to a medical absence MUST bring verification from the doctor/dentist when returning to school to ensure that the absence will be regarded as “excused.” Also, please remember to call in the morning of your student’s absence or it will be officially noted as unexcused.

Uniform: pg. 31 Parent-Student HandbookWe are doing all that we can to insure that ill-fitting clothes (pants too baggy or too long, shorts too short, etc.) not be sold to students. Students will be held accountable for any ill-fitting uniform items. Be advised that parents, as primary educators and caretakers for their children, have the final responsibility. The deans are not accepting “but-that’s-the-way-the-uniform-company-sold-it-to-us” type of excuse as a way of justifying ill-fitting clothing. As a reminder, solid white or black socks are required and must extend at least 2 inches above the shoe, shirts must be tucked in at all times, pants must be worn at the waist with a black belt, and hair style/color should comply with the BMHS policy. Students will be held in the Deans’ office if a dress code infraction cannot be corrected. Their absence from class will be recorded as unexcused with no make up permitted. BMHS jackets and sweatshirts are the only acceptable outerwear during the school day. Hooded sweatshirts or jackets will not be permitted during the regular school day.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Sites: Due to the high volume of traffic on Torrance Blvd. after 7:30AM, it will take parents longer to drop-off their students at the drop-off point. To avoid the congestion associated with the traffic on Torrance Blvd., please make an effort to drop-off your students early. Please note that students are allowed to come onto the campus as early as 7AM. Also, please make sure that your students have all their belongings ready to exit your vehicle the moment that you arrive at the drop-off point so that the flow of traffic is not delayed by students having to get their belongings from the trunk of the car. Finally, parents are advised NOT to use the professional buildings east of the school, the parking lot across the street, or Burger King as pick-up or drop-off sites before and after school. This, of course, would also include carpools. The doctors in the professional buildings have told us that it is a severe inconvenience when their lots are used for such purposes. Also, the white condominiums located on the west near the front of the school are not to be used for pick-up or drop-off sites. Please keep the driveway clear as you wait to enter the campus. Failure to abide by this request will result in disciplinary consequences for your students. Your cooperation in this matter will be appreciated. Please read the Student Drop-Off and Pick-up Procedures at the end of the Dean’s section of this newsletter.

Student Parking:In an attempt to be courteous to our neighbors, we request that our students who park off-campus do not park on the side streets off Henrietta Blvd. Students, if they choose to, may park on Henrietta Blvd.

Loitering: We are asking parents to please discourage your children from loitering at Wendy’s or McDonalds before school and/or after school.

Cell Phones on Campus:Please be aware that although students are allowed to bring their cell phones onto the campus, the students are not allowed to have their cell phones in their backpacks or on their person during school hours. All students must turn off their cell phones and leave them in their lockers during school hours, which include break and lunch. Students found to be in possession of a cell phone during school hours, whether the phone is turned on or not, will have their phone confiscated and will receive a referral. Furthermore, cell phone use in any of the building is prohibited regardless of the time of day. Confiscated phones may only be picked up by a parent/guardian.

Student Identification Cards:Students are required to have their school identification card with them at all times when they are on campus or at any school related event or activity. A student’s failure to have their school identification card may result in a disciplinary violation. Students who do not have their school I.D. will not be allowed to participate in school dances.

For Students Riding a Bicycle to School:Bicycle racks are provided on the east-side of campus in-between the Chapel and the First Building. Please make sure your students secure their bikes to the racks using a reliable bike lock and/or cable. Please have your student follow all guidelines concerning bicycle safety including using a “fastened” helmet. The “Helmet Law” is stated below for your perusal.

Section 21212(A) of the California Vehicle Code States: A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Con-sumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.

*****STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES*****

Drop-off Procedures Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd.

1. Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd., who are making a left turn, must turn into the campus. They may not make a left turn into the East Parking Lot.

2. Parents must drive onto the campus and continue driving until they have arrived to the designated drop-off point located in the East Parking Lot.

3. Drop-offs are prohibited in front of the school. Parents must drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the East Parking lot adjacent to the school. Parents who are conducting official business with the Main Office must park their vehicles in the East Parking Lot and walk to the Main Office. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee.

4. The Security staff will be available to control traffic

Parents driving east on Torrance Blvd.1. Parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. may not enter the campus. All parents

driving east on Torrance Blvd. must proceed to enter the East Parking Lot in order to drop-off their students in the designated drop-off points. Students may not be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd.

Please note that u-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a u-turn when heading west is on Torrance Blvd. and Prospect.

Exiting the East Parking Lot1. All drivers exiting the East Parking Lot must make a right turn only. Cars may not

proceed onto the street until they have stopped at the stop sign.2. Drivers may not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is unsafe and will cause a delay for the other parents who are attempting to exit.

Around the NeighborhoodWe encourage all parents to drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe. We have received many reports that students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones or in

the middle of the street on Palos Verdes Blvd and on Henrietta. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers, we encourage that students be dropped-off on campus where their safety can be ensured.

Students Parking Off-Campus

If your student parks on Henrietta, please remind him/her to be courteous and respectful to our neighbors. We request that your student not drive into the residential areas playing loud music or leave trash on the street. Our neighbors will welcome your student’s courtesy.

Also, the City of Torrance has also asked that our students not park on the side streets near Henrietta. The residents are unable to park in front of their homes when our students park on the residential streets.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your students to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is blinking red or are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety.

Hello from the Activities Office!

I hope the school year has started out well for you and your student. I have outlined a couple of important business reminders, as well as some information on some upcoming events and activities.

STUDENT IDs: Every effort was made to ensure that all students took an official school photo, and were issued a student ID for 2014-2015. However, it is the responsibility of the student to make sure they have a current student ID, as they are required to have it with them at all times while at school, and at all BMHS events throughout the year.

If a student should lose their ID, it is their responsibility to order a replacement through the Activities Office immediately. The replacement fee is $20. Please remind your student to “guard their card”. Students who do not have their ID with them upon request will risk being given a violation.

PARKING PERMITS: Parking permits have been distributed to students who purchased an on-campus parking space for the school year. Permits should be displayed clearly in the car windows during the school day, as outlined in the parking regulations. Cars without permits displayed and cars whose license plate numbers are not registered with the Activities Office will be ticketed and fined. Please remind your student to abide by the rules they received with the parking application, as tickets are as follows: 1st violation = $10; 2nd violation = $25; 3rd violation = $50. Parking policies will be enforced throughout the year in an effort to provide safety and security for students, faculty and staff.

ACTIVITIESASB and Class Officers have been busy planning and coordinating all of Bishop Montgomery’s activities for this year. The month of September was very busy!

ALOHA WEEK:Aloha Week is a fun way to welcome everyone back to the new school year. Aloha Week welcomes students, faculty and staff with a variety of new and traditional events: performances by our BMHS Band and Spirit Squads, information on current clubs, the Big/Lil Sis Lunch and the week culminated with the Welcome Frosh Dance/Big Kahuna Hula, the first dance of the year.

CLUBS FOR 2014-2015: Club Awareness Day was held on September 16th during lunch. This was an opportunity for students to find out more about the various clubs they might be interested in joining this school year. Students were invited to attend club meetings during Club Open House, which goes from September 17th through September 30th, so they could decide which clubs they wanted to be part of this year. Club Sign-ups are held during club meetings the last week of September/first week of October. Lists of BMHS clubs and their meeting dates and times are posted in the 3rd building and are available in the Activities Office. This is a great way to be involved!

BIG LIL’ SIS LUNCH: All senior and freshman girls are paired and the seniors welcome their little sisters to Bishop Montgomery with goodies and a special picnic lunch on September 18th on the upper field. This is always a great way for the freshman girls to meet the seniors and learn more about BMHS!

CLASS OPEN MEETINGS: Class officers held open meetings to invite ideas and participation from their classmates in upcoming activities, such as Homecoming Week class competitions and class masses. Encourage your student to get involved and help make their class activities successful! Meeting dates will be announced by class officers in morning announcements.

FRESHMAN OFFICER ELECTIONS: Our new class officers will be elected on September 25th. They will be in office just in time to get the class of 2018 enthused for Spirit Week and Homecoming in October!

activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273

Students can look forward to the following activities in October and should listen to announcement for more details.

HOMECOMING WEEK: Homecoming Week will kick off on October 20th and it will be filled with lots of spirited activities for the Bishop community! Activities will include the Unity Mass, class competitions, Spirit Games, Pep Rally, Homecoming Football Game, Half-time Show and Coronation, and will culminate with the dance on Saturday, October 25th. Thanks to all of our ASB and Spirit Squad members for all their planning and preparation to make this an enjoyable week for everyone.

KNIGHTS OF HONOR: This program recognizes some of our outstanding students. Students will be chosen throughout the year and presented to the Bishop community so they may be recognized among their peers. A description of each program is outlined below.

Knights of HonorFaculty members are invited to nominate individuals who demonstrate the ideal of a Bishop Montgomery student. The Knight of Honor is recognized by both students and faculty alike as a person of character who exhibits a generous spirit. They are dedicated to their education, committed to and involved in student life and put faith into action and witnesses to the message of Jesus Christ.

We look forward to recognizing the efforts of our students through these programs and are excited to share them with you each grading period.

Have a great month!

camPus ministry: Dorothy Morski - Campus Minister - ext. 243 Fr. Allen Ramirez - Chaplain - ext. 236

Campus MinistryA few quick reminders from Campus Ministry. Our Freshmen retreats are during the month of October. Our description of all of our retreats can be found on the BMHS website. Our first junior Emmaus retreat is October 2nd & 3rd at the Benedictine Monastery in Valyermo CA. Kairos, our senior retreat is November 19-21, 2014 in Hemet CA. Please pray for the success of these retreats and our retreat teams.

The first week of October is RESPECT LIFE WEEK! During this week through all religion classes we are conducting lessons on safe environment and protection of children. Some examples of topics covered are: internet safety, depression, peer sexual harassment, etc. This program is promoted for all Catholic Schools through the Archdiocese. It is a good way to review and remind students of safety and their own personal rights and dignity. In these classes topics will be covered and students will learn of resources and persons they can go to report issues of concern. The overall purpose is to yearly address safe environment and ways to keep our students aware of their self-respect and dignity.

technology: John Hong - Technology Committee Chair - ext. 276 Brian Adams - Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist - ext. 272

The Ahmanson Foundation recently notified Principal Rosemary Libbon that Bishop Montgomery has been selected as a grant recipient by the charitable organization. After an extensive written application process, and then a site visit on September 9 by the Ahmanson Foundation, Ms. Libbon received a phone call a few days later letting her know the grant request was approved. Ms. Libbon should receive the grant money by the middle of October and will direct it to Bishop’s continued effort to fortify the school’s technology infrastructure, specifically its wireless network. Strengthening the school’s infrastructure is of primary importance for Ms. Libbon so that the school can move forward with a 1:1 pro-gram that will equip students with Google Chromebooks, beginning with the new freshman class in the Fall 2015.

Some exciting new things have been happening on campus with technology. Many teachers have incorporated the use of Google Classroom into their course content. Google Classroom is a wonderful tool to create, distribute, and collect course materials online. Google Classroom easily ties together Gmail, Drive, and other Google Apps. Chrome-book carts are being used frequently and widely on campus. Students have used Chromebooks in the classroom to supplement classroom material with online curriculum, to create/share/and collaborate in Google Drive, and much more! Faculty professional development will be focused on further integration of Google Apps in the classroom, best practices to incorporate technology into course curriculum, and methods to increase student engagement through technology. Many teachers are incorporating technology into their course work, below are a few quick classroom highlights: Mrs. Walle and Mrs. Debellis are using an exciting new etextbook in their science courses. Student reading is available in physical/traditional form and online as an ebook. The online ebook allows for students to take notes and annotate text. The ebook content is supplemented with pictures, videos, and other media. Mrs. Walle has also implemented Google Classroom for all of her courses. Course content, handouts, and other materials are distributed to her students through Google Classroom and Google Drive. Mrs. Morski has started sharing documents and inspirational videos with her Religion Courses through Google Drive. In addition, Mrs. Morski created and shared a Google Calendar with her Campus Ministry students to help organize and schedule various duties. Mrs. Morski has also brought to the school an amazing online service called MediaSnap. Me-diaSnap, is an online space for access to a variety of educational multimedia services. Through MediaSnap teachers have access to services like: California Streaming, a DVD lending library, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, and more. Mr. Nguyen has been eagerly awaiting the now completed setup of a service called Splashtop Classroom. This service allows for students to view and annotate a teacher’s computer from another student computer or tablet. From their desk, a student with a tablet can view, write, or draw on the teacher’s computer. This service enables student interac-tion, collaboration, and use of annotation tools without students leaving their seat. Mr. Nguyen is also incorporating other amazing collaboration tools into his classroom like the application NearPod which allows for teacher control over what is displayed on student tablets, desktops, laptops, and Chromebooks. Mr. Hankey is diving into the use of his classroom set of 2013 Nexus 7 tablets. Video production, music production, music notation, and more! Mr. Hankey has also been creatively using Google Forms to have students submit tablature, music notation, and quizzes. Very exciting and creative media is being produced in Mr. Hankey’s courses.
