October 2017

October gave a party;

The leaves by hundreds came,—

The Ashes, Oaks, and Maples,

And leaves of every name.

The sunshine spread a carpet,

And every thing was grand;

Miss Weather led the dancing;

Professor Wind, the band....

The sight was like a rainbow

New-fallen from the sky....

~George Cooper (1887 "October's Party,"

Tillandsias, or

“Air Plants” ...

are evergreen, perennial flowering

plants in the Bromeliad family.

They can be found growing in jun-

gles, rain forest and desert envi-

ronments. They are epiphytes

(plants supported by another plant, not-parasically) and do

not need soil. Water and nutrients are absorbed through

their leaves via rain, air, dust…

The light preference is a bright, filtered locaon without

direct sun. Watering is pre$y simple, just soak them in wa-

ter once a week for an hour or two. Also, give them a

misng 1-2 mes a week depending on how dry their loca-

on may be.

Ferlizing is not necessary, but you can help increase their

growth and vigor by doing so. Since they are not in soil they

cannot synthesize most common ferlizers and would prefer

one specific for llandsias and Bromeliads.

The best part of these li$le ‘llys” is that they can be

to your favorite picture frame.

Succulent Wreath Class with Marilyn

Start a compost pile. Build it to 3. X 3. on the ground. Chop or grind more coarse materials and then

layer wet and dry (you could use straw). If you turn it every couple of weeks it will decompose quickly and be ready for

use in less then 3 months. If it just le. in a pile without turning it will be ready in about 1 year. Once you have built

your pile to the above dimensions, do not add anymore material. You can start a new pile nearby.
