This same analy- sis showed “Ocean Pines is the #1 place to live by the beach on the Atlantic coast, from Maine to North Carolina”. Most of us who live here in The Parke don’t need any media or person to tell us something we already know. A ranking of communities within Ocean Pines would probably find us as the #1 place to live in the Pines. To borrow some words General Manager Tom Olson used to describe Ocean Pines, The Parke “is a great place to live, work, and play”. Why? It’s because of people like the group of Caring Neighbors pictured here who volunteer their time to help others in time of need. It’s the many people who belong to committees, organize activities, give classes, and provide other services to the community. Their efforts benefit us all and are greatly appreciated. Red Hats Activities

Brunch by the Sea For the third year, The Parke Social Committee will present brunch at Phillips Beach Plaza Hotel at 13th Street and the boardwalk in Ocean City. Seating is limited to 160, and tables of four and eight may be reserved as was done at the Thanksgiving din-ner. All checks must accompany table reservations. It is not necessary to reserve an entire table. Sign-up will be from March 3rd through March 23rd, unless sold out earlier. Watch for sign-up sheets in the Clubhouse notebook and join your friends and neighbors for this popular and enjoyable event. For further information, call Pat Trovinger at 410-208-2544 or Rosalie Harris at 410-208-0455.

Soon the weather will warm up and the flowers will bloom. As a homeowner in The Parke, it is important to understand that any changes that you make to the exterior of your home must be approved by the Design and Review Committee. For example, if you want to have a deck or a patio installed in the rear of your home, you must get it approved. Some projects may require approval and a permit from Ocean Pines and/or the County. It is always best to check with both entities before starting a project. Some projects that don’t require prior approval from the Design and Review Committee are the instal-lation of annual flowers in existing flower beds, full view storm door, gutter guards, eight (8) or fewer “path lights”, TV satellite dish antennas (to be installed where they are shielded from public view if possible), and the installation of in-ground lawn irrigation systems which only require the filing of a “Notice of Intent to Install”, which is available at the Clubhouse or online. The ex-terior of your home may also be repainted provided that there is no color change from the original. If you have any questions or need help with your ap-plication, please feel free to call The Parke Clubhouse and ask for me.

Red Hats 2 Sombreros Rojos will meet Thursday, March 8, at the Lighthouse Sound Restaurant,at 12 noon. Attendees will order off the menu and receive separate checks. Please sign up in the notebook at the Clubhouse by Monday, March 5.

Operations Advisory Committee Recommendations The following summarizes the February 6th meeting of the Operations Advisory Committee. More details are included in the Highlights and Meeting Minutes posted in the Mail Pavilion and on The Parke website. There will be no meeting in March. The next meeting will be in the Clubhouse on April 3, 2007 at 1:30 pm. Meetings are open to all residents. The Operations Committee had previously recommended replacement of The Parke street signs with some more durable signs similar to those in the rest of Ocean Pines. Later, a source for cantilever brackets that can hold metal street signs on the sides of poles instead of on the top was found. It was recommended that this type of mounting and sign be used for replacing The Parke street signs. (Actual replacement is to await determination of an appropriate funding allocation and approval by the BOD.) The committee considered installing signs citing the county ordinance and fines to ask residents to clean up after their dogs. It was noted, however, that existing signs on county property (by the water tower on Ocean Parkway) are ignored. Therefore, only a notice will be posted in the Mail Pavilion. A discussion was held about the low propane gas pressure being experienced by some residents on Chatham Court. East-ern Shore Gas (ESG) is working on resolving the problem. Temporary above-ground tanks have been installed to provide adequate pressure. A restriction in the line is the primary suspected cause. Leakage is not suspected. The root cause of the problem will be identified and fixed after the ground thaws. Residents should stay in touch with ESG to report any additional problems or concerns. The Operations Committee meeting also provided the following reports:Chair Report: Nothing special to report. See other agenda items below.General Manager Report: The GM and her Reserve review committee are prepared to meet with Miller/Dodson to update the Reserve study. Meeting will be held soon. Expect study to be available for BOD at next scheduled meeting Clubhouse/Facilities/Lifestyle: Nothing new to report. Subcommittees: Fitness Center – The new leg press machine has been installed. Cleaning of machines is being done well. Lawn & Landscape, Ponds, Storm Water Management, Swimming Pool: – Nothing new to report.

Program Advisory Committee RecommendsDesignating Clubhouse as a Respite Center At its monthly meeting, a representative from the Red Cross, John Brenner, addressed the Program Advisory Committee on the possibility of having The Parke Club-house designated as a Respite Center in case of a local disaster. A Respite Center is a staging area to give people a place to stay until other accommodations can be made by the Red Cross. It is a temporary shelter, not overnight accommodations. There were concerns about the fact that the Red Cross can not give preferential treatment to Parke residents. It is strictly a first come, first served situation to serve any people in need. The Committee decided that the benefits far outweigh this one concern. The Program Advisory Committee recommends that the Board consider taking the appropriate steps to have the Clubhouse designated as a Respite Center for the Red Cross.

Improvements to Parke Homes At February’s Java & Tea Time presentation on “Home Improvements”, a number of photographs were shown of improvements Parke residents made to their homes. Thanks to the efforts of George Hawkins, that presentation and several additional photos can be viewed on the internet. Using your web browser, go to the following site: http://www.hard2forget.info/photos/pihi/intro.php. Additional photos can be added by contacting Steve Habeger at 410-208-3504 or [email protected].

Meet Dale and Taise Buley Dale and “Taise” Buley moved into 97 Central Parke East in December. They moved from Long Island, NY, where they raised five children who are now scattered all over the country. A daughter who lives in Salisbury, MD, encouraged Dale and Taise to look at The Parke when they were considering leaving the ‘empty nest’. They selected The Parke for a variety of reasons including (relatively) temperate weather and a lovely house opportunity. They are impressed with the amenities of The Parke and the people they have met here. Dale worked for the NY Telephone Company that be-came a part of Verizon. He worked in the Comptroller’s office and retired as Director of Internal Auditing. Dale hopes to get his golf swing back after this spate of brutal weather moderates. Taise is a semi-retired nurse who worked in the hospi-tal environment for many years. She now works part-time monitoring financial charges from hospitals and other fa-cilities in New York. Dale and Taise are getting into the swing of things here, attending a variety of Parke functions and even volunteer-ing to help!! They’ll be great neighbors for all of us. When you see Taise at Happy Hour, ask how she got her nickname.

Meet Jim and Eileen Patrick Jim and Eileen Patrick moved to The Parke in October 2006 from Annapolis, MD. Jim retired from Litton Indus-tries in College Park MD after 29 years as a configuration analyst. Eileen retired from Medical Resources Inc., as a Radiology Administer. The Patrick’s have four children and five grandchildren -- so far. All of their children live in other states; however they moved to The Parke because of all the wonderful amenities that abound and also the rave reviews about the friendliness of the residents, all of which they state is true. They have renewed acquaintances with several people who they knew in past lives and are busy finding new doctors, new stores and home maintenance contractors. In 2007, they are looking forward to the summer and the beach!

Problem: I have clogged my garbage disposal and kitchen drain with potato, shrimp and onion peelings. Ugh! Diane McGraw, 7 Central Parke West

Solution: Here’s a fast fix, without calling the plumber, to unclog drains with thrifty threesome. Clear out the peelings that you can reach. Don’t waste money on expensive drain cleaners when this pantry trio clears clogs just as well. Mix a cup of baking soda, a cup of salt, and three-quarters of a cup of white vinegar, and pour the mixture into your con-gested drain. Let it soak in for about 20 minutes, and rinse with a gallon of boiling water. Take caution if you have a corian sink as hot water may crack your sink.

Problem: We have had 3 incidents regarding things in our home where our actions might help other residents Pam O’Dowd, 100 Central Parke East

Solution:1. Garage door spring broke – needs to be greased 1x year with 30W oil, not WD40.2. If your Moen faucet needs repair, don’t let a plumber talk you into a new one for $300-400. They have a lifetime warranty and you can get parts on the Internet for free and fix it yourself.3. The conduit for air fell off, in our master bathroom, so no A/C or heat could come through. It’s wise

Sausage Soup1/4 lb sweet sausage 1 can white cannellini beans1/2 lb hot sausage 2 bunches broccoli1 large clove garlic 1 cup small pasta cooked2 cans chicken stockRemove the casing from the sausage and break it up. Put into a dry nonstick pot along with crushed gar-lic. Brown and remove the excess rendered fat. Add beans and soup stock, let simmer slowly for 10 - 15 minutes. Meanwhile steam the broccoli until tender. Add pasta and broccoli, remove from heat cover and let stand for about 10 minutes.Serve with Italian bread and salad; makes a great meal. Provided by Judy Tangredi.

It is a condition in which the large and medium-sized arteries supplying blood to the lower ex-tremities become narrowed or clogged, slowing or stopping the flow of blood. It is caused by atherosclerosis, which is a gradual process in which cholesterol and scar tissue build up in the artery, forming a substance called plaque that clogs the artery. The effects of this condition not only cause pain and disability, and put limbs at risk, but it is also one of the strongest risk markers available for predicting heart dis-ease. Individuals with Peripheral Arterial Disease are at a four-fold increased risk of heart attack and a two to three-fold greater risk for stroke, compared to individuals of the same age without PAD. Unfortunately, there are often no symptoms or warning signs for peripheral arterial disease. You may want to keep these symptoms in mind in the event that you or a loved one experience the following: • Pain during exercise, which is relieved during rest • Cold legs • Poor wound healing • Constant leg pain, tingling, burning or loss of sensation On May 12th, Life Line Screening will be at the Clubhouse to perform a painless, quick and non-invasive Ankle Brachial Index test to screen for PAD. This is one of four tests being conducted for a fee. Pre-reg-istration is required either on March 2 at Java & Tea Time or by calling 1-800-324-1851. For additional information, see the Activity notebook at the Clubhouse.

Tax Tips By Rick Rodgers

1. Capital loss carryover – Don’t forget to carry for-ward to the next year’s taxes any excess capital loss (over the $3,000 allowable in one year) resulting from the sale of stock or other investment property. If you go to a new tax preparer, be sure to take last year’s tax returns where he/she can see the amount to bring forward.

2. State and local taxes – There is an option to deduct state and local sales taxes instead of state and local income taxes for those who itemize deductions. This will benefit those whose residence is in a state with no income tax (such as Florida) and maybe those who bought a new car or boat.

3. E-file – E-filing your taxes, instead of mailing them, will get you your refund quicker. If you also direct de-posit your refund to a checking or savings account, you will probably get your refund from IRS in time to pay the state (or vice versa) before the due date. (If your tax situation causes you to pay one and get a refund from the other.)
