Registration InformationRegistration for any program is open to area residents . Pre-registration is required . Registration is on a first paid basis and may be done in person at the recreation offices or through the mail . Make checks payable to Southern Pines Recreation . Once registered, no further communication from the recreation office will be sent unless the program site, time, or day are not printed or changed . The right is reserved to cancel any class, event, or activity . Class fees are listed $ r/$ nr, followed by min ./max . participants .

Indigent Youth PollicyNo Southern Pines resident child will be denied participartion due to financial hardship .

Resident PolicyFor the purpose of determinging the appropriate fee to charge participants of Town programs and activities, the following policy shall be in effect:• A resident of Southern Pines is a person, whose permanent, primary home is in the town limits of Southern Pines or who owns property within the town limits of Southern Pines on which the person pays property taxes .• Valid documentation verifying personal identity and either a current in-town home address, or payment of property tax to the Town of Southern Pines is required to receive resident rates .• Non-Resident Memberships are now available The purchase of a non-resident membership allows all immediate family members residing in your home to pay resident rates for programs and activities . The non-resident membership is good for one year and costs $60 .00 .

Refund Policy• If the department cancels a program, class, activity, or facility reservation, a FULL refund will be issued in the form of a check within four (4) weeks .• After a person or team has registered for a program, class, activity, league or has reserved a facility or equipment, NO REFUNDS will be issued to that person or team unless the department receives a request in writing five (5) working days prior to the first scheduled day of the program, class, activity, league action or reservation .• When an individual registrant has cancelled under certain circumstances that qualify the individual for a refund, the refund will be equal to the amount paid by the registrant, less both a $5 .00 administrative fee and any non-refundable deposits . Refunds totaling $10 .00 or less will be issued in the form of a credit which is valid for one (1) year from the date of issuance .• When an adult athletic team has cancelled under circumstances that qualify the team for a refund, the refund will be 75% of the team’s registration fee .• The $20 .00 fee for non-resident team members is not refundable .• If a registrant cancels participation in a trip, a full refund, less both a $5 .00 administrative fee and any non- refundable deposits, will be issued if the trip is fully subscribed and the registrant’s slot is filled . Otherwise, there will be no refund .• The Recreation and Parks Director will determine refunds in any special circumstances not addressed by this policy .

September 6 TOuR De MOORe CenTuRY RIDe The Sandhills Cycle Club invites you to participate in the Tour de Moore Century Ride featuring a variety of routes up to 100 miles . Contact Sandhills Cycle Club at 692-1037 for more information . at 692-4494 .

September 18 KAYAK TRIP(children ages 10-17 are welcome with an adult)Enjoy a great introduction to the pleasures of kayaking, scenic views of flora, fauna, and wildlife along the Lumber River . Enjoy the twists and turns of the river around sandbars and cypress trees and you will soon realize why this is designated a Natural and Scenic River . Our 8 .4 mile trip has us accessing the river at Boardman and pulling out at Princess Ann . No paddling experience required . Bring lunch and drink . Depart Campbell House parking lot at 8:30 am and return at approximately 4:30 pm . $40 r/$80 nr includes transportation and gear. Min/Max: 10/14

October 2 32nD AnnuAl AuTuMnfeST Join us in Downtown Park in Southern Pines for great family fun at the 32nd annual Autumnfest . The festival will be held 9:00 am until 4:00 pm and will feature crafts, concessions, local entertainment, youth activities, and foot races- l mile fun run/walk and 5K run . Races begin at 9:30 a .m . and 9:50 a .m . Pre-registration fee is $10 (until 9/24/10) and includes the official Autumnfest t-shirt; race day registration is $l5.

After Rave reviews from last year, don’t forget . . . Autumnfest Kids Race!

Think you can run fast? Come, take the challenge at Autumnfest and test your foot speed against other kids your age . Sprint races will be held upon the conclusion of the 5K race at approximately 10:30 am for kids ages 3-12 . Races will vary in distance by ages, but none over 100 yards . So get your running shoes on and come on out! Registration will take place that morning at Autumnfest . Youth sprint race is free and participants will receive a race ribbon . november 27 TRee lIGHTInG This year, the annual Tree Lighting will be combined again with the Holiday Open House . The events will be held in Downtown Southern Pines starting at 2:00 pm . The local merchants will offer their own “open houses” for the holidays . Along the streets there will be Trees displayed and carolers will be strolling the streets . Santa Claus will be available for pictures (please bring own camera!) at 4:30 pm at the train station . The Tree Lighting festivities begin at 5:30 pm with the lighting of the Tree beginning around 6:15 pm . This event is co – sponsored by the S .P .B .A . and the Town of Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department .

December 4 JR. fleA MARKeT (7-16 years)9:00-11:00 am in Southern Pines Recreation Center Parking Lot (rain location: Recreation Center) . Don’t Miss Out! It’s Your Last Chance! Clean out your closet! Get rid of your stuff! Young business people can put their bargaining skills to the test as they sell their wares . So, bring your handmade crafts, toys, clothes, etc ., set your prices, and make some money . Sellers must pre-register as space is limited . Booth fees: $2r/$4 nr if you bring your own table (up to 6 ft.) or $5 r/$10 nr if you want a table provided with your booth. Set up 8:00-9:00 am.

October 16 SPIDeRS In THe SAnDHIllS A brief narrative of spiders will get us started before we enjoy hiking, capture spider webbings on paper, hike, and enjoy nature games . All ages will enjoy this unique program as we join forces with Weymouth Woods and Lowe’s Home Improvement to offer a unique program . 10:00 am at Weymouth Woods $5 r & nr All ages are welcome and youth will need a helping hand from parents .

October 29 HAllOween HAunT (12 years and under)

Free! 5:00-7:00 pm Spook, rattle, and haunt with the scariest of all . Cute pumpkins and snarling witches are invited to join us for a hauntingly good time featuring: Fortune telling, crafting, Skeetball, Ghostbuster Bowling, Halloween Bingo, the Monster Mash, and much more! november 13 MOvIe nIGHT (12 years and under)The Town of Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department invited kids and their parents to enjoy a fun, warm, and free movie! The movie will be shown in the Southern Pines Recreation Center on Saturday, November 13 . The movie will begin at 6:00 pm . Bring a blanket or a sleeping bag . The cost is free to Southern Pines residents and $5 for non – residents . This event is co – sponsored by Sandhills Home Theater and the Southern Pines Recreation Department . The local Girl Scouts will provide concessions . NO FOOD or DRINK allowed in the gym .

December 4 HOlIDAY PARADeEvery year the S .P .B .A . and the Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department team up to create a fun, successful Holiday Parade . The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will have marching bands, activities, and more!

December 31 1ST evePut on your party shoes and join us in Downtown Southern Pines for a Winter Wonderland as we ring in the New Year early (6:00-8:00 pm) . This year’s extravaganza features: live music, carnival games, singing contests, face painting, make ‘n take crafts, and much more . The highlight of the evening is the countdown to the pinecone drop at 8:00 pm . Gather your family and friends for this year’s Winter Wonderland brought to you by Southern Pines Business Association and Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department .

TACKle fOOTBAll Coed Ages 10 – 12 (as of August 1, 2010)Are you ready for some football! Tackle football is a great way for kids to exercise, make new friends and learn the importance of teamwork . The games and practices will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, at the Memorial “C” Field . If your child is between the ages of 10 and 12, sign them up for football this season . MACHIne PITCH BASeBAllAges 6 – 8 (as of August 1, 2010) Machine pitch baseball is a great program for kids that are new to baseball, or those who have played for several seasons! This is a great program for all kids, especially those coming out of T-Ball, who are interested in playing Optimist baseball . While playing in this league, players will get lots of physical activity, while learning the fundamentals of baseball . Games and Practices are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Armory Field . local Punt, Pass & Kick competition . This FREE event will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at 6:00pm at the Memorial “C” Field . This event is for boys and girls, ages 8 – 15 years old . All local winners will advance to a regional competition for an opportunity to qualify for the Carolina Panthers Team Championship . fAll GOlf leSSOnS Ages 7-15 The golf professionals at Knollwood Fairways will again teach this session of lessons . Class emphasis will be basic grip, stance and swing mechanics . Youth golf clubs are available for rental (free of charge) at the Campbell House . The Southern Pines Recreation Center Gyms is open each Sunday for pick-up basketball games from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm . Open Gym requires a season pass:$5 for youth residents/$10 for youth non-residents; and persons 16 & older the fee is $10 for residents and $20 for non residents . Passes are good for the entire Sunday Open Gym season – but cannot be pro-rated . You must have a pass and ID to attend Open Gym . SHuffleBOARD You can enjoy one of the most fun activities for free! Stop by the DCC to check out a key and play shuffleboard at our Memorial Park location . We have two shuffleboard courts . You can play day and night!

CAnASTA (wednesdays)Canasta is a matching card game in which the object is to create “melds” of cards of the same rank and then “go out” by playing or discarding all the cards in your hand . Canasta begins at 10:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm.

MAHJOnGG (Thursdays) Mahjongg is a game of four players that originated in China . Mahjong involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck . This game is becoming one of the most played at the center . The mahjong club meets at 1:00 pm and ends at 3:00 pm. The DCC plays the Chinese version . The center has its own mahjong set for check out .

BRIDGe (fridays)The history of contract bridge, one of the world’s most popular partnership card games, dated back to the invention of trick-taking games in the early 16th century, such as whist . Bridge itself forked off from whist with the creation of the game “Biritch” (or “Russian

Whist”) in the 1800s, and evolved through the late 19th and early 20th centuries to form the present game . This game is usually played by four people in two partnerships, in which “trump” is determined by bidding and the hand opposite the declarer is played as a dummy . Bridge plays begins at 1:00 pm and ends at 4:00 pm.

BROwn BAG lunCH/GAMe DAY (Tuesdays)On Tuesdays, participants bring in their lunch and enjoy fun, fellowship and activities! We have a plethora of card games, board games and the Wii (bowling, baseball, tennis, golf and boxing) . We provide snacks and drinks . Lunch begins at 11:30 am and games begin immediately after.

CROSS STITCH (Mondays)Cross-stitch is a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to form a picture . Cross-stitch is usually executed on easily countable evenweave fabric called aida cloth . The stitcher counts the threads in each direction so that the stitches are of uniform size and appearance . This form of cross-stitch is also called counted cross-stitch in order to distinguish it from other forms of cross-stitch . Sometimes cross-stitch is done on designs printed on the fabric (stamped cross-stitch); the stitcher simply stitches over the printed pattern . Classes will begin at 12:00 pm . The book mobile is here every other Tuesday at 11:45 am . All you need is a library card from Carthage, Aberdeen, Pinebluff, Robbins or Vass .

leGAl AID Of nORTH CAROlInA, InC. (2nd Tuesday of the month)Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc . visits the DCC the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00-1:00 pm . They provide legal services at no cost to individuals who meet the requirements . Call ahead of time to make an appointment (1-866-219-5262 (toll free) or just stop by .

BlOOD PReSSuRe CHeCK (2nd Tuesday of the month)

Linda Wallace, Vice President of Patient Care Services/CNO from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, will stop by the DCC the second Tuesday of the month to check participant’s blood pressure .

Blood pressure checks are from 1:00 – 1:30 pm.

wII TOuRneY (Mondays)The Nintendo Wii console is one of the most fun consoles to play! You can choose to play baseball, tennis, bowling, boxing or golf . Stop by the DCC and challenge your friends to some friendly competition . A winner is determined on the last Monday of the month . Game play begins at 5:30 pm and ends at 6:30 pm.
