Ingredient of the Month CardiaBeat® /Omega Sterols™ from Enzymotec have received the Award of the Month June/July for its regulatory Score. CardiaBeat® “C” and “F” grades for functional foods are plant-sterol-based matrixes, capable of reducing “bad’ cholesterol, together with additional health benefits, plant sterols cannot provide. This is an ingredient that addresses the dual health challenges of unhealthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. CardiaBeat strives to offer total lipid control for cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients or individuals at high risk of CVD such as those suffering from diabetes or obesity. Whereas other CVD solutions on the market often only address one aspect of CVD risk factors (LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, oxidative-stress), CardiaBeat, a unique combination of phytosterols and DHA and EPA, is capable of simultaneously lowering 'bad' cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while also improving the ratio between total cholesterol and 'good' cholesterol levels. This is achieved without the main weakness of phytosterols, which is reduction of fat soluble vitamin absorption (such as beta-carotene). The formula consumed at 2g per day delivers 1.6g of conjugated phytosterol-DHA and phytosterol-EPA (full RDA of phytosterol-esters) and up to 650mg of DHA and EPA. Thus, products containing CardiaBeat can claim both cholesterol and CVD-risk reduction. The ingredient acts through a different mechanism than lipid-lowering pharmaceuticals (statins). Thus when consumed in combination with

statins it might improve the lipid-lowering effect or enable the reduction of statin consumption. CardiaBeat is ideal for incorporation into dairy products, due to its healthy market image and the natural presence of fat, which can be substituted or augmented by the ingredient. Its use in food applications has just been launched in Europe, which has thus far been the focus of Enzymotec's investments. tested in a semi-randomised, single-blind, crossover intervention design.

The Panel considered that in order to bear the claim, a diet should comply with the specifications and conditions of use laid down in CODEX STAN 203-1995. Link

Arabinoxylan produced from wheat endosperm

Metabolic Health Arabinoxylan produced from wheat endosperm can reduce post-prandial glycaemic responses if 8g of arabinoxylan-rich fibre produced from wheat endosperm (at least 60 % arabinoxylan by weight) per 100 g of available carbohydrates should be consumed. Link

Fructose Metabolic Health Consumption of fructose in place of sucrose or glucose in foods or beverages can help reduction of post-prandial glycaemic responses. In order to bear the claim, glucose or sucrose should be replaced by fructose in sugar sweetened foods or beverages. Link

Sodium Muscle & Skeletal Health

The Panel concluded that a cause and effect relationship has been established between the dietary intake of sodium and maintenance of normal muscle function. However, the evidence provided didn’t establish that inadequate intake of sodium leading to impaired muscle function occurs in the general EU population. Link

Carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions

Performance Carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions enhance water absorption during exercise and maintain endurance performance (when drink contains 80-350kcal/L from carbohydrates, at least 75% of the energy from high-GI carbohydrates and 20-50mmol/L sodium). Link

Also black currants have greater medicinal activity than, for instance, gooseberries. Even so, all berries have medicinal properties. Flavonoids exist in berries in rich amounts; they are exotic and diverse family of compounds known as the flavonoids, the colorant of fruit. The other names for this colorant include phytochemicals, polyphenols,

phenols and bioflavonoids. In fact, these substances are essentially natural drugs – without the side effect as powerfully stated by Jean Carper in her book “The Food Pharmacy”. People who regularly eat berries usually have excellent bone density. These special functions of berry flavonoids have recently been documented. Researchers have discovered that extracts of berries, for instance, blackberries, directly influence the function of the cell membrane.
