Schneider with his hip surgery. She gave an update on the Randy Frazer

reported to our president that 550
cars attended the Lake Afton func-
tion and that the Car Council was very pleased with the turn out.
John Stone reported that
Roger Graham was the first car to have trouble on the Overland Park
Regional Meet, but that he, himself,
had problems with some premium
gas later. Jim Clark added to the earlier Lake Afton report by stating
that although it rained in the morning
the day turned out to be a beautiful
one for the car show. Gary Hileman urged all
members wanting to participate in
the 4th of July parade in Derby, Kan-sas, to sign up today. Line up at
9:15-9:30 with the parade starting at
10:00. A bar-be-cue lunch at the McHenry’s after the parade. Ed
Giesen reminded the membership
that they must pre-register in order to
participate in the July 9th Automobil-ia Moonlight Car Show.

The board decided to give a donation to the Frazer Children’s Ed-

The Wichita A’s board meeting was called to order at the home of Jim Broadhead, president at 7:00 p.m. on July 11, 2011. Board officers present were Jim Broadhead, president, Chris Cushman, vice president, Ed Giesen, past president, Ray
Harshfield, treasurer, and Dawna Ruggles, secretary. Other club members present were, Brenda Broadhead, John Stone, Rich-
ard and Linda Kibbe, Roger and Bonita Graham, and Dennis and Claudia Ellerman.
Jim Broadhead moved and Chris Cushman seconded that the club donate $3,000 to the Randy Frazer’s “Frazer Chil-dren’s Education Fund” with funds coming from February’s swap meet profits. Motion passed
Dawna Ruggles moved and Ed Giesen seconded that the club donate $2,500 to the Model A Ford Foundation to help
build a museum dedicated to Model A’s in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Motion passed. This sum earns the club the “Gold Club Award”. John Stone reported on the individual purchasing of bricks for the museum.
John Stone reported that MAFCA is requesting donations for the 2012 National Convention raffle. Dawna Ruggles
moved and Ray Harshfield seconded that up to $300 be reimbursed to Chris Cushman to provide speedometers for said raffle. Motion passed. Claudia Ellerman and Dawna Ruggles will work on providing a “ladies” raffle item also to be sent.
Brenda Broadhead and Brigitte Baggs requested that the club pay $19.34 per member attending the annual Christmas
Party to be held this year at Prairie Pines. Member paid fee would be $15.00 making the total cost per member to be $34.34
for the event. Dawna Ruggles moved and Ed Giesen seconded that this be done. Motion passed. It is to be noted that the board at a previous get together gave its approval for the club to pay $25.00 per member for the annual Ladies Christmas

Strain canned tomatoes and to 3 cupful's of strained juice add 1 teaspoonful of salt,
1 teaspoonful of sugar, 1 tablespoonful of lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoonful of onion juice from a scraped onion. Serve chilled. This is a good first course for a roast dinner or may
be served in small glasses with a cracker or sandwich for in-between meal "snack,". Mrs.

On June 21st Richard & Linda Kibbe, driving a 1930 roadster and Chris & Lynda Cushman driving a 1930 For-
dor, left for the MARC National Meet in San Diego, CA. The
Arizona fires created a route change for us to travel through
Colorado both to and from San Diego. We drove our A’s through KS, CO, AZ, and CA and due to a navigational error
our A’s drove a few miles into NM. We met Kerry & Wan-
da Steffens at the meet. Due to a tight schedule the Steffens drove a modern car to San Diego.
We stopped to view the Great Sand Dunes N. P. and
Mesa Verde N.P. in CO, and the Grand Canyon N.P. in AZ. Colorado was cool, Arizona and eastern California hot and the
San Diego weather was perfect with no insects or bugs. We
did not have rain until the last night, coming home, in Garden
City, KS while we were asleep. All of us attended the seminars and the "Welcome
Party" on Monday. The "Welcome Party" consisted of a buf-
fet of hamburgers, hot dogs, beans and other fixings, which was served beside the pool at the host hotel.
Tuesday morning Chris Cushman presented his pop-
ular seminar on speedometers. Tuesday afternoon, Steffens
took the Old Town Trolley Tour of San Diego while the
Cushmans and Kibbes had lunch in Old Town and then visit-
ed the San Diego Zoo. Steffens visited the zoo on Sunday
before the meet started. The Ice Cream Social followed by the Hubley Derby was held in the evening. Kerry had entered his
car and did very well the first few rounds but lost to the faster
cars. Wednesday, all of us took the bus tour to see the USS
Midway Aircraft Carrier. In my opinion it was the highlight
of the whole trip. We learned the procedures our servicemen
follow to take off and land the planes on the carrier. We viewed their sleeping quarters and the, not so popular, brigg.
When we were finished with the tour, I left having the greatest
respect and pride of what our servicemen and service women do and go through to protect and defend our country. While
on board we could see the Carl Vinson nuclear powered Air-
craft Carrier across the harbor. This was the ship that held the burial ceremony for Osama bin Laden. The retired service
men, from the USS Midway, had installed a large banner in
front of their carrier welcoming the Carl Vinson home. That
evening Steffens went to the "Fashion Show and Awards" while Cushmans and Kibbes went to the "Viewing of Judged
Cars".
The Grand Tour and Lunch was held on Thursday. The tour led us to the Cabrillo National Monument. That
evening everyone took the San Diego Harbor Cruise where we
got a close up view of the Carl Vinson and the rest of the ships in the harbor.
There were 223 or more registrants attending the
MARC meet. The following is the number of Model A types

Everyone left for home on Friday. Steffens took two
days to get home and we took 7 days touring through Colora-
do. We stopped to see Larry and Sue Cushenbery, at Pitkin,
CO. We visited and ate supper at their camp site. Richard
attempted to pan a little gold at the nearby stream but he was
not successful with the filtering process. We had a great time
visiting Larry and Sue and the food was wonderful. Thank you, Cushenberys!
The next day, while visiting the Monarch Pass gift shop,
someone approached Richard and stated they had seen us at
Pitkin. Let it be noted there were several people keeping track of us throughout our journey.
The Kibbes had a Model A problem while driving in
Arizona. 170 miles from reaching San Diego, the car started running rough. After changing the carburetor, points, conden-
ser and distributor we discovered the missing nut and washer
on the intake manifold. Cushmans kept plugging along with no problems.
Lynda really saved us while traveling in 111 degree heat in
the desert. She happened to have a bunch of bath towels and
soaked them in water. We laid towels over our legs and it kept us cool. Lynda poured water on the towel that was
draped over Chris’s head while he drove. Chris was cool
headed throughout the drive in the desert. A lot of Gatorade was consumed and a lot of celebration happened after we
made it to the motels. We were really proud of our A’s and
how they handled in the desert. There were a few modern cars off on the side of the road with flat tires. We felt very
fortunate.
We had driven over 3000 miles and this was a very
enjoyable trip. I did over hear Richard stating he would nev-
er drive a Model A, during the summer, in the desert again.
If, in the future, he would return to San Diego, he would be-
come a trailer baby and tow his Model A and ride in
the modern iron.

4TH OF JULY DERBY PARADE AND BARBEQUE
We checked the archives and have determined that this is the 22nd consecutive time that the club has participated in the Derby Parade.
We also went to the McHenry’s estate the first year, 1990. In 1991 we
had 32 cars participate.
One year in the last 22, we seem to remember that Francis
Grady arranged for us to do the Haysville parade first and then drive to
Derby and join in the end of their parade.
The Wichita A’s don’t participate in a lot of parades but always turn out in force for this one. This year there were 45 Model A’s and 1
Model B. 110 people had registered for the meal which was catered by
Rib Crib of Derby. An extra 10 showed up to eat and fortunately there was enough food to go around. Unlike last year when we had an intense
rain, this year the weather was beautiful, although hot.
We weren’t aware that there were trophies awarded until Jim
Broadhead found the 1st place antique car trophy in the front seat of his Woody. The awards were sponsored by the VFW. No need for an
awards presentation; just lay the trophy in the seat.

One million Ford all-steel one-piece wheels have been produced in forty-two days at the Hamilton, Ohio, plant of the Ford Motor Company. This is the
equivalent of equipage for 200,000 automobiles, giving each car five wheels.
The five-millionth wheel to be built at Hamilton was made on May 6, just
42 working days from the completion of the four-millionth. The average main-tained on the million was 23,809 wheels per day.
What is pronounced the biggest single day’s output came on May 3, when
a total of 28,487 wheels were turned out in twenty-four hours. During the same day one of the shifts made 10,540 wheels, said to be a record for eight hours. June 1, 1929

A common misconception among Model A collec-tors today is the body style on 1930 pickups and trucks.
1928 & 1929 commercial vehicles all have the original
square cab, sometimes referred to as the phone booth style.
This cab was a “throw back” from the Model T days. The misconception is that 1930 models came into production
with the rounded cab. NOT TRUE!!
As the 1930 passenger cars came into production the com-mercial vehicles continued with the early style cabs into
June 1930, then the later cab style with fenders and sheet
metal was put into production. As a result thousands of these commercial vehicles were titled 1930 although they had the
28-29 early style sheet metal.
Example: The green truck pictured is a 1930 Model.
The previous owner listed the truck for sale on e-Bay. Some vigilant shopper responded quickly to tell him that
this was not a 1930 but actually a 29. Well, the responder
was wrong.
There is a detail that identifies the early style cabs produced in 1930. When the gas tanks for 1930 passenger cars went
into production the 28-29 style tank was updated to take a
twist on tab style gas cap. The 28-29 radiators continued with screw-on cap even though the gas cap was the twist
on, tab type.
In summary 1930 pickups and trucks manufactured until June 1930 had the 28-29 style cab with a twist on gas
cap. Thereafter, 1930 model production continued with the
rounded style cab. RG

As Jim Broadhead was recovering from foot sur-gery this spring he received a call from an unknown man
asking if he wanted to buy a Model A. Jim already has 4
restored Model A’s so he told the man he wasn’t interested.
The car that the man described was a 29 business coupe that had been in the Schowalter family since 1968.
His father had purchased it and with his son they had plans
to restore it. They took the fenders off, lifted the body off, brush cleaned the frame and painted it with a brush. They
also rebuilt the brakes and installed new king pins. For a
time they left the fenders off, rigged up a tail light and the son drove it around the streets of Wichita. Then, with vi-
sions of total restoration, they removed the soft top and the
oval quarter windows which were unique to the business
coupe. They brush painted the body the original green col-or and reinstalled the fenders. They also had the head-
lights, radiator shell and bumpers re-plated.
This was 1971 and the son was out of school so the project stalled. They had plans to finish the restoration but it never
happened.
Mr. Schowalter passed away about 5 years ago and his home on North Roosevelt was sold so the son put
the coupe in a storage unit in South Wichita. With storage
fees of $75 per month the son decided that he couldn’t af-
ford to keep it any longer and he wasn’t in any condition to finish it. This is when he called Jim.
After thinking about it for few days, Jim just
couldn’t resist going to look at the coupe. When he saw the
rust free body and fenders with no cracks he was “hooked”. The car had all of the oval window hardware, original horn,
no extra holes in the firewall or dash. The next day, Jim
took Francis Grady with his trailer to buy the coupe and
haul it home. As they were about to leave it appeared that the man was close to tears. Jim offered to come back and
take him a ride when he got it fixed up.
The tires on the car were old and split so Jim took a spare set of 16” tires and mounted them up, so it would
roll.
Jim found the gas tank and carburetor to be clean. He put some diesel fuel in each cylinder and let it set for a
few days. He did install a new distributor since he had one
on hand.
With battery installed Jim pushed the starter and it started right up. As near as he can tell it hadn’t been started
since 1971, 40 years. It did fog up the whole garage and
yard until the remains of the diesel burned off. Then Bren-
da pointed out that there was a lot of debris behind the car,
paper, straw, lint and etc. Apparently mice had taken up
residence in the muffler and were now displaced. On a test drive the car runs and handles well and
the brakes are still really good.
Jim has since ordered a top kit for the car, but other
than that he plans to drive it as is. RG

WHAT IS MAFFI??
We have been hearing about MAFFI (Model A Ford Foundation, Inc) for many
years. They had displays set up at the World Meet in Dallas, at National Meets
in French Lick, Vancouver and San Diego. Both the National Clubs are supporting this
Foundation. And, now we hear they are building a Museum at the Gilmore Car Museum near Kalamazoo
Michigan. But, what is MAFFI?
MAFFI’S Mission is to preserve Model A Fords, their history, and related memorabilia for future generations
to enjoy through research, education, and museum displays. MARC AND MAFCA are set up as social organi-
zations. MAFFI was set up in 1986 as an educational foundation and all donations are tax deductible for the
contributor.
I checked out their website and found so much information. There are links to the following projects (+ oth-
ers):
UPHOLSTERY PROJECT - They have organized and categorized upholstery, top materials, trim welt, wind
lace, window curtains, carpets and leathers according to their basic color scheme, eg. brown, blue, gray, green,
and tan. They have managed to collect and identify 200 samples, representing approx. 85% of original Model
A upholstery plus similar information about reproduction materials.
FORD PARTS PROJECT - This was in collaboration with the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village Re-
search Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Starting in 2000 and concluding during 2009, over 100,000 drawings
have been identified, cataloged, and entered into an index that is now online and searchable.
FACTORY PHOTOS – They have large and diverse collection of almost 400 original Model A Ford factory
photos. You can access these online and also order prints.
MODEL A REGISTRY – Worldwide Database of Model A Fords. This is the site where you can register your
Model A(s), search for data about single vehicles or
search for a category of data about multiple vehicles.
COFFIELD AD COLLECTION - The collection contains over 600 magazine and newspaper ads, including
many foreign ads.
AND, THEIR LATEST PROJECT – A MODEL A FORD MUSEUM
Since the beginning of MAFFI, they have kept all funds received (except for administrative purposes) to some
day build a Model A Ford Museum. Their current effort is the fundraising and design activities connected
with the Model A Ford Museum to be built at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan near
Kalamazoo. (Those of you who went on the first club bus tour in 2006 will remember touring the Gilmore
Museum.) Along with the aforementioned collections, they have tools, displays, era fashions, parts and several
vehicles in secure storage. According to one of their newest board members, John LaVoy: “The museum will
not be a static warehouse of cars that were given to MAFFI, they have it planned to be an interactive trip
though the history of the Model A era. The goal will be to keep changing what is on display so it will be differ-
ent each visit.”

The Rumbleseat Review is the official publica-
tion of the Wichita A’s Model A Ford Club, Inc, a local
chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America and the
Model A Restorers Club. It’s purpose is to keep mem-
bers informed of past, present and future events, activi-
ties, and club news. In addition, this newsletter includes
articles and other information to aid in the restoration
and enjoyment of the Model A Ford automobile.
This publication is mailed to members, prospec-
tive members and editors of similar publications prior to
monthly meetings. Meetings are usually the fourth
Monday of the month. Members may publish antique
car related ads only for free of charge which includes
items wanted, items for sale, or items for trade. We in-
vite members to submit articles containing technical
Model A information and other interesting tidbits for
publication in this newsletter. Items to be published
must be submitted to the newsletter editor by deadline
shown in the calendar. Wichita A’s membership dues
are $25.00 (new members) and $20.00 (renewals), per
year (October to September30). MAFCA dues are
$40.00 per year and MARC dues are $38.00 per year.
An advertisement in this newsletter is $15.00 per year.
