If  you  haven’t  signed-‐up  to  attend  the  annual  PTSA  fundraiser,  it  is  not  too  late.    See  the  column  to  the  left  and  Page  3  of  this  newsletter  for  all  of  the  details.    We’ve  changed  several  aspects  of  our  annual  event  so  that  more  people  can  attend.    We  have  typically  held  this  event  on  a  Thursday,  but  this  year  we  wanted  to  do  it  on  a  Sunday  so  more  people  could  come  to  support  our  school.    We  have  also  typically  had  a  boutique  at  our  event,  but  this  year  the  boutique  will  take  place  on  Friday,  November  5th  from  10am  –  3pm  in  the  old  gym  at  MHS  so  that  students  and  teachers  can  enjoy  the  offerings.    Hope  all  of  you  will  make  a  point  to  join  us  at  one  or  both  events.  The  final  football  game  of  the  season  is  also  that  day  so  come  show  your  support  for  the  team  too!

As  we  work  to  raise  money  for  our  PTSA,  we  also  must  think  about  the  terrible  financial  situation  our  state  and  school  district  are  facing  due  to  the  recession  and  falling  revenues.    With  the  money  raised  during  last  summer’s  Save  Our  Schools  campaign  and  funding  from  the  federal  government’s  stimulus  package,  the  school  district  was  able  to  rehire  teachers  who  had  been  laid  off  last  June.    It  was  the  work  of  100’s  of  parents  who  spearheaded  that  summer  fundraising  bonanza.  With  help  from  countless  businesses,    the  Save  our  Schools  campaign  was  able  to  raise  $1.5  million  dollars  in  60  days  to  reverse  the  layoffs  from  June.    It  was  simply  amazing  to  watch  the  parents  and  communities  mobilize  to  stem  the  tide  of  budget  cuts  that  have  become  an  annual  event  in  Sacramento.    But  these  annual  emergency  fund  drives  are  not  sustainable.    I  can’t  imagine  that  same  group  of  parents  being  able  to  donate  their  entire  summer  next  year  and  the  next  to  make  up  for  the  loss  of  funds  from  the  state.    Unfortunately,    our  efforts  will  get  us  through  this  school  year  only.  Without  more  resources,  our  district  will  be  in  the  same  situation  this  spring  that  we  were  in  last  spring.

Luckily  the  city  of  Santa  Monica  has  stepped  in  to  help  create  a  permanent  funding  stream  for  our  district  by  putting  Propositions  Y  &  YY  on  the  November  ballot.    Prop  Y  is  a  fund  raising  measure  that  is  projected  to  generate  about  $12  million  annually  in  locally  controlled  new  revenue  for  the  City  of  Santa  Monica.    This  is  money  that  Sacramento  CANNOT  TOUCH.    Prop  YY  is  an  advisory  measure  and  gives  Santa  Monica  City  Hall  a  mandate  to  give  half  the  revenues  generated  by  Prop  Y  to  the  SMMUSD  school  district.    The  other  half  will  be  designated  to  vital  city  services  like  911,  fire,  police,  libraries,  parks,  and  other  general  fund  expenditures.  Both  measures  must  pass  by  50%  plus  one  vote.

The  funds  would  come  from  a  1/2  percent  transaction  and  use  tax  increase,  similar  to  a  sales  tax  in  the  city  of  Santa  Monica.    Everyone  who  shops  and  dines  in  Santa  Monica  will  contribute  to  protect  our  schools  and  the  city.    And  although  the  residents  of  Malibu  cannot  vote  on  these  measures,  the  schools  in  Malibu  will  benefit  from  the  money  that  is  raised  in  Santa  Monica.    The  Proposition  specifically  excludes  groceries,  rent,  services,  medical  visits  and  prescription  drugs.  Only  one  other  municipality  in  the  state  has  taken  it  upon  themselves  to  support  their  local  schools  in  this  way.    It  is  a  testament  to  the  value  our  community  puts  on  education  that  Santa  Monica  has  taken  such  a  bold  step.  If  you  have  friends  in  Santa  Monica,    urge  a  yes  vote  on  Y  and  YY.

Hopefully  Y  &  YY  will  be  victorious  on  November  2nd  and  we  can  relax  knowing  that  this  additional  funding  that  the  district  will  receive  annually  will  prevent  teacher  layoffs  and  cuts  to  valuable  programs  this  year  and  in  the  future.

Imagine a Japanese class, with half the students on the SAMOHI campus and half on the Malibu campus, that interacts with students in Japan weekly. Imagine District elementary students studying the solar system and talking with an astronaut. Not the students at one school, but students from several schools talking with the astronaut and with each other from their own classrooms. Imagine a classroom unconstrained by space, where personal interaction between students and teachers can take place independent of location. Imagine a classroom with immediate access to resources and people. Imagine a school where students in the hospital can attend class and not fall behind. Imagine parents not having to miss a concert or a sports event because they are out of town on business.

Stop imagining. These are some of the technologies available now. On October 6th a group of people at the District Office, along with a group at Malibu High visited Illinois, Ohio and Oklahoma in the space of an hour

and a half with the help of a little Cisco magic. They interacted with the presenters. They saw technologies that would allow an ill student to participate in a class from home, or review that class later over the web. They talked with each other as well, without having to drive on a rain soaked PCH. And maybe best of all, when the meeting ran over, one of the mothers didn't have to leave early or drive an hour on PCH and risk being late to pick up her daughter, because she was already there. It didn't take imagination on October 6th, imagining became reality. I also want to pass along some great news; Malibu HS is currently featured on the cover of the Fall 2010 Learning by Design publication (cover attached). It has also been announced that the project was honored with a Citation of Excellence from Learning by Design. You can view the digital version of the publication at the link below:

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage - until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not only with the U.S. Radium Corporation but also with her own family

and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth and the commercialization of science. Written with warmth and courage, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece. Tickets on sale NOW! www.malibuhigh.org

THE SHARK FUND WANTS YOU!Yes, we're talking to you.  Did you know The Shark Fund is the primary financial supporter of the legendary PTSA (along with Arts Angels, Athletic Booster Club and a wide array of other other programs and services here at MHS)?

If you have not yet donated this school year, please consider doing so now!  Many of our programs require funding early in the season to remain in tact and we have only heard from 1/3 of MHS families so far.  Our goal is 100% participation and we are asking you to consider a donation of $ 1,500 per student or more.  But please donate at whatever level you feel comfortable or appropriate.  Simply giving is what is important as we roll into the holidays...

We also wanted to alert you to another way to give that's both free and delicious.  If you dine at The Sunset Restaurant any Tuesday evening and mention The Shark Fund, they will donate 20% of your bill directly to us.  It doesn't get much easier than that!

We look forward to seeing everyone at the PTSA "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere Tennis Extravaganza and Social Mecca" as well as the ABC's Christmas Tree Lot Coming Soon.  Have a great November everyone and Go Sharks!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Shark Fund Board

The Malibu High Enewsis produced by the Malibu High School PTSA. Volunteer parents collect the information and compile it to send to every family on the first Monday of every month.
