SPRING 2010 THE TOTEM Recently, we took our family up to camp to see all the snow, walk on the frozen lake, and to enjoy a winter day in the Berkshires. The day was more than we could have hoped for; though cold and windy the beautiful sunshine made camp sparkle. As we ran around camp, fully dressed from head to foot in snow clothing, we appreciated the magic of camp as it lay quiet and peaceful (a quiet that we NEVER hear during the summer!). The magic that we felt was felt in our activity. When we all take part in something and exert ourselves just the tiniest of bits, we gain so much from an experience. We are all so fortunate to have camp waiting for us each summer, full of moments where we exert ourselves and as a result, feel an adrenaline rush and gain a certain pride and sense of accomplishment. So campers, remember that magic of camp as we enter this Spring – push yourselves to try new experiences and expose yourself to activities – you’ll always be rewarded with that sense of pride and accomplishment for trying and remembering to live your life to the fullest! Spring 2010

THE ToTEm

Recently, we took our family up to camp to see all the snow, walk on the frozen lake, and to enjoy a winter day in the Berkshires. We are all so fortunate to have camp waiting for us each summer, full of moments where we exert ourselves and as a result, feel an adrenaline rush and gain a certain pride

and sense of accomplishment. So campers, remember that magic of camp as we enter this Spring – push yourselves to try new experiences and expose yourself to activities – you’ll always be rewarded with that sense of pride and accomplishment for trying and remembering to live your life to the fullest! Can’t wait to see you all and hear of your latest accomplishments and activities!

Jack and his crew have been busy as beavers, working away to make camp beautiful for us when we arrive this summer. While they wait for the snow to melt, they will occasionally have a camp family visit camp to see the snow – if you plan on visiting camp, be sure to bring your snow shoes!

While we wait for the snow to melt, we are of course thinking of new ways to make camp even more fun. This year we’ll be adding to the waterfront a water trampoline and a new sailboat! The sailboat, a Club 420, is made for a crew of two, enabling young sailors to learn teamwork and is

quick enough for All-American Collegiate sailors – all of our sailors will have a blast on the water this summer! The water trampoline speaks for itself!

In talking with staff we’ve come across a few that have made it to some pretty far off places recently...Greg Walbergs has headed down under, to visit Chad Winton among others...and can’t really blame him, this winter would force anyone to look for summer somewhere...keeping warm too is Ali Carpenter, who just got a 4 month job in Dubai...doing what you might ask...well during the day, he’s using a GPS to map out the runways for a new airport, at night he’s the guest of a 5 star resort...life’s hard sometimes eh? Adam Confrey was also recently spotted on a camel in Egypt...

Going from warm to cold, why?!? is one of our favorite office girls from 2009 Emily Wagman, who this summer will be working down on the lake with Arts & Crafts...Emily grew up in Florida and decided to head to school in Vermont...to us that seems backwards but she tells us she’s having a great time...

Speaking of Arts & Crafts, MKN is pleased to announce the promotion of our most popular “ginger-haired” staff member James Foley to Arts & Crafts Director...congrats James!

Thinking warm days at camp, always makes us think of our great lake...and the staff have never looked

so good...the long and short of it is that Milty and Eddy Williams will be back down there as will Aaron Blackeby, Matt pickard, and Andy Braemar to name a few...

Although we know that none of you happened to catch CTV’s (that’s Canada’s NBC) coverage of the Olympics...somehow there is a rumor that Chris Spencer managed to get himself on the tv for a good few seconds enjoying in the Olympic spirit...make sure you bring some of that footage with you when you come to camp!

And finally, since y’all know Bunkie (and it seems half our staff) is from Louisiana...it wouldn’t be right to not talk a little football and camp favorite Dustin Fischer...Dustin was so excited to see the sunshine of Florida, even if it was through his tv in Minnesota...that all he could imagine doing is running drills on the MKN football field...who dat!

until next time...MKn out...In our next issue, look for a list of all your favorite returning camp counselors to see who will be at mKN Summer 2010!

staff update

Tribal leaders Looking ahead to campus life this summer, we are again putting our best people in a leadership role on each campus to help all of our campers have an awesome and successful summer. All of our tribal leaders are veterans to this position and are supported by an amazing staff.

This summer, Junior Campus will be headed up by laura povah and Tom Bodily (T-Bod). T-Bod is returning to Junior Camp after a two year stint on Lower Senior.

Lower Senior Campus will be led by Jake Muhlbeier, Vicky Mcneil and Barry Finder.

Upper Senior Campus will be headed up by Greg Walbergs, Jordan petrie, and Chad Winton, leading the Cherokees, Algonquins, and the Senecas, respectively.

hi everyone, it’s time again to take a peek into the lives of some of our great staff members... let’s see what they’ve been up to...

lucas rosenblum (Mohican, 2010) has hit the slopes in Canada, and has visited Mickey Mouse in Florida, along with his first trip to Daytona 500. lucas, you’ve become a regular world traveler! Make sure you stay in one place long enough to enjoy your tennis and Spring baseball!

Jordan rosenblum (Alumni, MKN 7yrs) is enjoying his first year at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he landed himself on the Dean’s List with a 4.0 GPA last semester. His plans include working at a day camp once again this summer, although he often wonders about going back to MKN as a counselor!

Matt rosenblum (Alumni, MKN 8yrs) is doing outstandingly well in 11th grade and getting ready for those ever famous SAT’s to make some college choices in the fall of 2010. With all his experience at MKN, he has decided to work at a day camp this upcoming summer.

Matt Dubin (Cheyenne, 2010) has just been named to the Rye Brook Rec Basketball All-Star team for the second year in a row, and will play in the tournament at Westchester County Center in March. Woo hoo, Matt!

Eric Trachtenberg (Navajo, 2010) is a member of the freestyle ski team at Catamount in nearby South Egremont, MA. When not doing tricks or attempting aerials in the terrain park, he is busy practicing up for the 2018 Olympics moguls competition. Good luck on that one, Eric!

Ben Berliner (Navajo, 2010) created a really cool “rubber” bracelet (like the Lance Armstrong –LIVE STRONG bracelet) all by himself online- in orange & in turquoise with white letters. It says HELP FOR HAITI & he is donating 100% of the proceeds to Hope For Haiti. Great job, Ben!

Billy levy (Seneca, 2010) broke his arm in September and was in a full cast for 6 weeks. Fortunately it is healed now and he is back to playing basketball. He’s looking forward to playing basketball and soccer at camp.

Colter rule (Mohican, 2010) had basically never been on skates until he joined Salisbury Youth Hockey in November. Through hard work and persistence he caught up with kids who have been playing for 5 years...and is loving it.

philip Sisser (Mohican, 2010) Philip has skied cross country since he was 3 years old. In Vermont this February he tried downhill skiing at Killington and LOVED it! He is now a downhill skier. Maybe we’ll see him at the Olympics, too?

Effective December 20, 2009, Greg Bassen (Navajo, 2010) became a Certified Scuba Diver. On one of his deep water

dives Greg saw 3 sharks, a huge green eel and a stingray. He can’t wait until his next family scuba vacation!

Jack (Cherokee, 2010) and James Bowen (Navajo, 2010) enjoyed a week in Vail where Jack converted from skiing to snowboarding! James opted to stick to with his skis for now!

Brett Epstein (Algonquin, 2010) was selected as the most valuable goalie in the U14 Gold Division at the AAU East Coast Winter Nationals Roller Hockey event held in January in Feasterville, PA. Great job, Brett!

nathan Strauss (Mohican, 2010) is not only an athlete, but he’s also a mathlete -- competing on his school’s Math Olympiad Team. What fun!

Marcos Curiel (Iroquois, 2010) was drafted by the Red Sox Minor Bs for his Little League. He is looking forward to playing baseball at camp as well as trying archery, lacrosse, and basketball. He has been busy playing his electric guitar, and started running a mile a few times a week. Now that’s a well rounded camper!

nate Hewit-Morey (Mini Camper 2010) is testing for his blue belt in karate! and his brother Charlie (Iroquois, 2010) is working hard at karate as well. He is a green belt, 2 away from becoming a black belt!

Brett Davidson (Mohican, 2010)plays soccer for the Shalrie Joseph Soccer Club and the Boys U10 team won the New England Regional Futsal Championship last month. The team just got back from Kansas City where they played in the National Futsal Championship. Kansas City – wow!

Simon Osmont (Cheyenne, 2010)is a military history buff, and just started fencing lessons. Simon spent last year auditioning for films in New York, and was the alternate choice for the boy’s part in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” This year he’s busy in school theater and caring for his puppy, “Mason.” Simon, you must be busy!

Will Cousin (Iroquois, 2010) has been playing competitive hockey for the Rye Rangers. He has played in a tournaments and is looking forward to traveling to Marlborough, MA to play in another. Great job, Will!

Aidan Esposito (Navajo, 2010) is taking Chess, Spanish, and Computer Animation classes after school and playing ice hockey. His team the Panthers ended the season in first place and they are about to hold the playoffs. Aidan is also becoming an exceptional skier, skiing Double Black Diamond runs and glades. You must be a busy guy!

Camper ReunionsIn January, we were able to meet with a crew of MKN boys who could make it to the White Plains bowling lanes for a winter reunion. As usual, we enjoyed some good laughs, visited with summer friends, and reignited our passion to get to camp as quickly as possible! Thanks to all staff who made it in as well (Ben Schein, Katie Peduzzi, Barry Finder, Greg Leonarczyk, Julie Wright and the winter office staff).

In February, we were able to meet up with our Florida boys to hit the lanes in Sunny Florida. We enjoyed a nice afternoon of family bowling, complete with all the dads playing, too!

We loved seeing all the boys during the winter months – everyone looks a bit different in jeans and long sleeved shirts!

Sam Schwartz (Cheyenne, 2010) made the 6th grade honor roll last semester and also has begun a new hobby--stamp collecting. Are you bringing those stamps to camp?

Max Freedman (Seneca, 2010) has qualified for Vermont state competition in ski racing this year and Harris Freedman (Cherokee, 2010) has been successful is completing a 540 in freestyle skiing! Great skiing, boys!

DJ (Mohican, 2010) and roman (Iroquois, 2010) reed have both learned how to snowboard this winter in Vermont and Utah and skied many single and double black diamond trails. This summer they also went water skiing for the first time and loved it! Bet you guys can’t wait to waterski at camp!

Matt rappaport (Cheyenne, 2010) went horseback riding for the first time in the Dominican Republic on the beach in the ocean and his brother Scott (Iroqouis, 2010) went snorkeling for the first time. Scott was amazed at how close he could get to all the beautiful fish. Did it look like the Stockbridge Bowl?

ross Coleman (Mohican, 2010) is doing great in his tennis league this year, and is looking forward to improving his game at camp this summer!

Bunkie and lynn ran into Victor Bergman (Seneca, 2008) on a recent flight. Victor is playing lacrosse for Lynbrook High School with Ethan Mirenberg (Seneca, 2008) and Aaron Hazen (Seneca, 2008). We love to see alumni!

Sam Kay (Cherokee, 2010) made the middle school basketball team and recently visited Colorado where he was able to pursue his passion of snowboarding - day in and day out. Great job, Sam!

Jakey Cronin (Mini camp, 2010) plays hockey for the Westchester Viper hockey team, which went to the semi-finals of the international Silver Sticks tournament in Michigan featuring the best youth hockey teams from Canada and the U.S. Also, Jakey’s soccer team went undefeated in the fall season and is looking forward to a successful spring. Good work, Jakey!

a special reminder for parenTs:

In the past few years, parents have enjoyed writing a letter to their son’s counselors before their son even arrives at camp. We’d love for all parents to do this, even if this is your son’s Seneca year and has been with us for 8 years! After all, the counselors living with your son this summer may not know your son at all or not that well and a letter from you before your son arrives would paint a beautiful picture of who your son is. A one page, personal note would be great – be sure to include all the things that you feel you would share if you were talking face to face to your son’s counselor (yes, we fully understand that this is difficult to do in one page!). Send this note in your son’s baggage which will be shipped to camp before his arrival and your son’s counselors will know him well even before he arrives at camp!

London ReunionAt the end of January, Bunkie and lynn took MKN overseas – to London! Attending a fantastic camp fair, they were able to hire some new staff for Summer 2010. The best part about the camp fair was that all of our current UK staff showed up to help! We had more help at our MKN booth than any other 10 camps combined!

Showing up to help were Sweaty, Vicky Mcneil, laura povah, Ali Carpenter, nadia Holt, Sarah Carroll, paul Tannahill, ross Webb, rory Saunders, Toby Maher, T-Bod, Matt rimmer, James Waterman, Gareth, Evans, Matt pickard and J-Money, It was great to see our British Staff!

A fArewell to Mike MolloyWe are sad to announce that our assistant director, Mike Molloy, will not be joining us again this summer. Mike has had great success in VT as a high school assistant principal and more recently, the boys Varsity head soccer coach and golf coach. With his demands at school, he is not able to be with us at camp for the summer. We all wish Molloy well! (although we are pretty sure he’ll manage to pop in for a visit or two!)
