LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF TALKOn Tuesday, October 1st, the Lake County Sheriff, Roman Buch-berger, gave a engaging presentation on how to prevent theftand general safety precautions.

Below are just some of the points that Deputy Sheriff Buchbergertouched on:

• Stay in touch with your neighbors. No one knows your neigh-borhood better than you and your neighbors, so if somethingdoesn’t look like it belongs there, there’s a good chance itdoesn’t.

• Help stop tailgating by slowing down or stopping after youenter the property. Allow the gate to close behind you beforeproceeding.

• Keep your blinds and curtains closed when you are not home.

• Keep your doors and windows locked when you are nothome and your garage door down when not in use.

• Consider installing video doorbell.

• Relocate jewelry and watches of value. Do not keep unse-cured in bedroom. Photograph jewelry, write down serialnumbers of watches.

• Even though this is a gated community we are not removedfrom the outside world. Crime happens in every neighbor-hood, but Lake Barrington is safe and one of the safest communities in Lake County.

CHIMNEY SAFETY TIPSTo aid in the prevention of chimney fires and carbon monoxide intrusion and to help keep fireplaces functioning properly, theChimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) offers the followingsafety tips: 1. Get an annual chimney check. Have chimneys inspected annually, and cleaned as necessary, by a qualified pro-fessional chimney service technician. This reduces the risk of firesand carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup or obstructions in the chimneys. 2. Install a chimney screen tokeep debris and animals out of the chimney. NOTE: At LBS, theunit owner is responsible for the chimney screens. 3. Choosethe right fuel. For burning firewood in wood stoves or fireplaces, choose well-seasoned wood that has been split for a minimum ofsix months to one year and stored in a covered and elevated location. Never burn Christmas trees or treated wood in your fireplace or use flammable liquids. NOTE: Per the LBS Rules,“Firewood shall be stored in garages or other enclosed areasbut not on porches, patios or decks. Firewood cannot bestored in view of others. Duraflame or pressed logs cannotbe used because they burn too hot and can cause chimneyfires.” 4. Keep the hearth area clear. Combustible material tooclose to the fireplace could easily catch fire. Keep furniture at least36” away from the hearth. Use metal mesh or a screen in front ofthe fireplace to catch flying sparks that could ignite or burn holesin the carpet or flooring. 5. Install smoke and carbon monoxidedetectors. Place detectors throughout the house and check batteries in the spring and fall. When you change your clocks forDaylight Savings Time, remember to check your batteries. 6.Never leave a fire unattended. Before turning in for the evening,be sure that the fire is fully extinguished. Supervise children andpets closely around fireplaces.

LANDSCAPE COMMISSIONThirty days hath September, 15 of which this year were gloomyand rainy. Other than a few weeks in summer, it has been a wetyear with ample amounts of rain. Through it all, the LandscapeCommission has been actively engaged in a number of activities...

Selection of New Landscape ContractorThe Landscape Commission is in the process of interviewing andevaluating a number of landscape contractors. The field has beennarrowed down to three firms, one of which will be selected asthe Landscape Contractor responsible for all LBS landscapemaintenance for 2020-2024. It is expected that working with asingle Landscape Contractor will help ensure consistent care andservice—for mowing, shrub care, and other landscape mainte-nance activities—throughout LBS. In October, Commission Repsheard each of the three firms present their plan to maintain thelandscape, provide services, and process work orders; the Land-scape Commission will select one of these firms as a finalist andpresent its recommendation to the Master Board.

Landscape Enhancement ProgramLBS initiated the Landscape Enhancement Program in 2018. The intent of the program is to rejuvenate the landscaping surroundingour residential buildings by replacing overgrown, intrusive and out-dated plants, and addressing downspout and building drainage issues, as needed. It is an opportunity to enhance our community’slandscape with more sustainable plant varieties that require lessseasonal maintenance (thereby reducing labor costs over time).

In response to some concerns that were expressed after the program’s first year, the Landscape Commission reviewed theprogram and has implemented some changes that should resolve these concerns. In addition, the LBS Master Board hasmoved funds from other landscaping-related capital projects intothe enhancement budget, which will enable us to complete theprogram more quickly than originally anticipated (in just 10years!) and to address all sides of a building (not just the frontand sides as originally planned).

Selection of Natural Area StewardConservation Landscape Stewardship (CLS) is an initiative thatwas approved by the Master Board last spring, as recommendedby the Landscape Commission. Heidi Natura, Living HabitatsLandscape Architects, has been selected to provide planning and

• WINTER VACATION PLANS OR A SNOWBIRD?Keep your thermostat at 55° F or higher. Drain your pipes of allwater by opening the faucets. Flush your toilet to clear the waterfrom the bowl & tank. Consider pouring Non-Toxic Antifreeze inthe toilets & tanks to prevent them from cracking & freezing.Close the flue to your fireplace. Make sure you have an “InCase of Emergency” person on file at the management of-fice. It is also helpful if that person has a key to your hometo enter it in case of that emergency.

• CLEAN REFRIGERATOR & DEFROST FREEZERRemove all food from the refrigerator & freezer. Unplug the re-frigerator, prop open the doors to prevent mildew.

• SHUT OFF WATER SUPPLY TO SMALL APPLIANCES!Where possible turn off water supply to dishwasher, washingmachine & icemaker.

• UNPLUG APPLIANCES! TV’s, Microwaves, all small appliances to avoid the risk of firecaused by a faulty switch or a rodent gnawing on a wire!

• ENTRY INTO YOUR HOME WHILE AWAY!In the event of an emergency; always provide your ManagementCompany with permission to enter your home while you are away.

• WALKING & DRIVING IN SNOW & ICE!Always use extreme caution!

WINTER TIPSWinter is fast approaching. Many people do not think about get-ting ready for winter until after the first cold spell, but fall is thebest time to get your homes ready for winter.

• REPLACE YOUR FURNACE FILTER!This is a project that’s especially important in the winter forwarmth. By checking the filter on a monthly basis and replacingit as needed, your furnace will heat your house more efficiently, saving you money on utility bills.

• BE PROACTIVE ABOUT PLUMBING!To weatherproof your outdoor plumbing, shut off the supply ofwater to outdoor spigots and drain them. Roll up your sprinklerhose & store it for the winter.

• KEEP GARAGE DOORS CLOSED TIGHTWater pipes could be in the slab of the garage. Those pipes couldeasily freeze and cause a pipe to burst.

• SEAL LEAKS, CREVICE CRACKS & EXPOSED AREAS AROUNDPIPES!

Be especially watchful of the areas around windows, doors, andyour foundation. Caulk cracks or install weather stripping whereappropriate.

• CHECK OUT YOUR CHIMNEY! If you plan to use your fireplace this winter, make sure your chimneyis clean and no critters have made themselves at home there.
