School UniformPart of the expectation placed upon a student who attends a NSW Public School is that they will wear the endorsed school uniform. At Barrington Public School, this is done with pride and consistency. As the cooler weather is upon us, it is timely to remind everyone that the wearing of footless leggings of any colour, or skivvies that are not school colours, is not part of our community endorsed school uniform. Any jumpers worn also need to be school jumpers of royal blue with the school emblem displayed. It should also be noted that girls should be wearing white socks with both winter and summer uniforms while boys should wear white socks in summer and grey in winter. At a recent P&C meeting, our uniform policy was again reviewed and endorsed. One clarification that was made was that in regard to the girls’ uniform was that bike pants / shorts are not school uniform and should not be worn to school.

Grandparents’ DayGrandparents’ Day will take place this term, on Thursday, 23 May. Stay tuned for a more detailed program for the day.

Opportunity Class 2014If you are interested in applying for a position for your child in an opportunity class for Year 5 entry in 2014, please contact the school for more information.

Hunter Regional Soccer TeamCongratulations to Jasmine Sergeant of Year 6 who has been successful in gaining a place in the girls Hunter Regional soccer team. Jasmine travelled to Newcastle on the 12 April as part of the Manning team and trialled for a position in the Hunter team which will compete at the State Soccer carnival this term. Well done Jasmine! Jasmine will travel to Wyong on the 28, 29 & 30 May for a series of games and we wish her the very best.

Excursion payment and notification – Years 3-6As our excursion draws closer, it is necessary to finalise and pay for a number of activities planned during our time away. In order to do this, we need definite numbers. This needs to be done by this Friday, 10 May. This includes adults as well. If you have not paid your deposit, or contacted the school to discuss your intentions by this day, it will be assumed that you do not wish to participate. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to adjust the numbers of participants after this date. Please note the second instalment of $50.00 is also due this Friday 10 May.

School of Arts GrantThis year, Mrs Kim Macdonald has taken up the duties of applying for the numerous grants which become available to the school. Happily, Kim has been successful on her first attempt and the school has been awarded a grant of $1300.00 from the Gloucester School of Arts, Arts and Cultural Fund. These funds will be used to host Interactive African Drumming Workshops for all of the students.

Netball CourtOver the last couple of months, Mrs Faull has been working on the ‘installation’ of a netball court on the existing soccer field at our school. After the court had been measured, checked and marked out by Mr John Faull, Mr Hammy McSwan visited one weekend with his post hole digger and now the previously unused goal posts have been installed as well. The school is really grateful to both of these gentlemen who gave their time and expertise so that our students could access this resource. Mr John Hughes will be available soon to mark the court with the line marker.

New BlazersAs you may have noticed at the ANZAC Day march, the P&C has purchased four new blazers for our students’ use at official occasions. These blazers are very smart and have already drew positive comments on the first outing.

Yarning Our CountryDuring term 2 Barrington students will be involved in some craft activities for the School of Arts knitted landscape display which will be displayed from 15 July until 18 August.Year 2/3/4/5/6 children have been asked to donate 1 ball of wool each for some French knitting. If your child enjoys knitting they can also get involved at home and knit some squares that can be made into plants, animals, people, machines and gardens. If you would like more information, please contact Leanne Barrett on 6558 3157.K/1 students will be making pom-pom bees. The orange and black wool for these bees has been purchased by the school.

Orangutan NewsOur adoption certificate has arrived! We are now the proud sponsors of a gorgeous young orangutan orphan called Ruthie. Ruthie is in the care of Nyaru Menteng Rescue Centre. Kept as a pet after her mother was killed, she had known only ill-treatment and exhibited both physical and mental scarring. While she is showing signs of improvement, she still has a long way to go.I have created an orangutan display that includes Ruthie’s Story in the library. Please feel free to come in and have a look. Mrs Groves.

ANZAC Day MarchCongratulations to all of our students who participated in the local ANZAC Day march and service during the school holidays.

Netball NewsOn Thursday the 2 May, our netball team travelled into Gloucester to play the first round of the PSSA Netball Knockout against Gloucester Public School. While we lost convincingly (35-2) we came out winners in other ways. The girls displayed all of those qualities you like to see in team competition. They played with courage and determination and continued to give it their all right up until the final bell. The sportsmanship between both teams was lovely to watch. Both umpires were very impressed with all of our girls and only had positive things to say about their efforts. Thanks must go out to the umpires, Betty Pearson and Sally Maslen, Mrs Wilson from GPS, Melinda Higgins for scoring, and of course Mrs Wise and all the parents who took time out to support the girls.Mrs Groves
