Students in all three of the ensembles performed at the Fall Fiesta concert recently. It was an excellent opening event for an exciting year ahead. Our next concert will be our annual Winter Gala, which will take place on Thursday, December 14, in the Eagle Eye Theatre. This epic event will include a three-course dinner, silent auction, and performances by individual students and all three ensembles. The students are busy fundraising for our annual band trip in May. We are planning to visit the Okanagan this year. They have completed selling magazine subscriptions as well as poinsettias, planters and wreaths from DeVry Greenhouses. If you missed out on the magazine subscription sale but you would still like to order or renew, it’s not too late. Log on to QSP.ca, choose Howe Sound Secondary and order from there. You can even choose which student you would like to donate the proceeds to on the website!

Poinsettia, planter and wreath sales wrapped up on November 6th. Delivery details are as follows: WHEN: Friday, November 24. Between 3:15-5:00 pm WHERE: HSS Small Gym Music students MUST pick up their plant orders that afternoon. Please contact Ms. Booth ahead of time ([email protected]) if you anticipate an issue collecting your plants.

On November 15, the Winter Gala silent auction forms will be distributed to the students (forms will also be available on the school website). Students will be able to go out into the Sea to Sky community to ask for donations for the event. This is the BEST fundraising opportunity for students. In previous years, the music program has brought in over $10,000 at this event thanks to the generous support of parents and local businesses. We hope this year’s event will be just as successful. See you at the Winter Gala! Fran Booth

Football Team Our Sounders Football Team has demonstrated steady growth in their play and has recently managed to secure a play-off berth in this year's league competition. Perhaps the highlight of their year so far was a recent 34-0 victory over Frank Hurt Secondary, one of the top-seeded teams in the league. Regardless of the outcome of any game, our team consistently plays with a tremendous amount of heart and determination. They proudly represent our school in each game they play. Special thanks to our coaching staff. Without their time and dedication we would not have a football program for our school. We are eternally grateful to our coaches: Jim Errington, Frazer Britton, Cory Constantine and Cody Smith. Special thanks also go to our team manager, Bobbi Jo Bergstrom. Good luck in the play-offs! Many thanks to all the staff and community volunteers who make athletics at Howe Sound such an important part of our school culture. To volunteer for the HSS Athletic Program, contact Eric Jones (Athletic Director) at [email protected].

In The Community

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre - Seussical the MusicalTM The HSS Musical Theatre Club has been working hard on Seussical the Musi-cal

TM with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Students

have been busy rehearsing their singing, acting and dancing for the stage, while others have been designing costumes, and forming sound and lighting cues behind the scenes. This captivating musical combines many of Dr. Seuss’s classic tales. The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears A Who, The Grinch and many other beloved characters are sure to make an appearance. A play for all audiences, Seussical the Musical

TM is an exciting, colourful and con-

structive play about friendship, imagination and inclusiveness. If you would like to support HSS Theatre, we are looking for donations of gently used suits and cocktail dresses.

2nd Annual Take Me Outside Day To celebrate Take Me Outside Day and the importance of spending time outside, Howe Sound PE 10 classes worked with Squamish Elementary kindergarten students to host a very active and fun morning of teamwork building games, cooperative activities and communication challenges. A great time was had by all students, young and old. Thank you to the Squamish Elementary teachers who volunteered their classes for this great activity.

WE Day On October 18, thirty Howe Sound students joined the several hundred Sea to Sky District students in attending the 10

th Annual We Day in Vancouver. Along with

thousands of students and teachers from across the province, our students were inspired by the speakers and the stories of hope and change that they witnessed throughout the day. Our students returned to HSS motivated to make real and lasting change in our school and in their communities. Thank you to Ms. Lejeune for accompanying the students to Vancouver.

Graduation 2018

Grad Transitions All students who graduate in BC must complete the Graduation Transitions Program. This is a mandatory four-credit course which involves paid or volunteer hours, daily physical fitness and post-secondary plans. Students need to complete an online survey and meet with their counsellor. The survey can be found at www.hsscounsellors.webs.com on the home page and should be completed as soon as possible. Grade 12 students are registered in the course for semester one and, when all work is completed, students receive an RM (Requirements Met) on their report card. Unsuccessful students will be re-

registered in the course for semester two. Students continuing on to post-secondary studies will also need to register an account with Student Transcript Service (STS) in order for school marks to be sent electronically. Please follow the link on our counsellors’ website and see your counsellor with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your co-operation in helping your student complete their graduation requirements.
