RESIDENTS SPEAK!
1
• Gardeners – let’s respect each other’s new plants. Please do not move others’ plants and watch where you step. Also, let’s
take precautions against groundhogs, birds, and other critters. Please close the gate going in and out. • Late-night noise can be a problem for your neighbors (especially those who wake early or have young schoolchildren). Be
considerate and do more noisy activities during the day – including avoiding using the laundry facilities after 10pm as the noise from the machines may bother nearby residents.
• If you have any issues with the laundry machines, call Caldwell & Gregory at (800) 927-9274. They have a clothing claim process in case the machines cause damage to clothes.
• Did you know we’re neighbors with The Lorna Sundberg International Center? They are at 21 University Circle, behind University Gardens (the big house on the hill you can see from the playground). The IC hosts fun and free social and cultural events monthly - movie nights, cooking programs, local outings, arts/crafts – that give you a glimpse into different world cultures. Children are welcome. They also offer English language programs. Subscribe here to receive the monthly e-newsletter. Questions? Contact [email protected] or 434-924-7983. Like the IC on Facebook!
• Most student families qualify for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) – a government program that provides healthy foods at no cost, nutrition education, breast pumps, and breastfeeding support for young mothers. Call 434-972-6200, or visit www.wicva.com to see if you qualify.
This section includes information by residents, for residents. Feel free to share something that will be of interest/importance to other residents. Keep in mind that all information listed below is neither endorsed
nor sponsored by UVA Housing and Residence Life, but simply provides an opportunity for residents to inform and support one another. To contribute to this page, please send an email to [email protected] by the first of each month. Posts can be made anonymously if desired.

4 year limit
This is a reminder that the maximum amount of time that you may live in Graduate and Faculty/Staff Housing is 4 years. If you have lived with us for 4 years, please be sure to begin thinking about alternative housing for June 2017.
Are You Graduating in December or is your University Position ending?
Remember to notify the Housing and Residence Life Office in writing, at least 45 days in advance. We will also need an email from your advisor or the graduate student coordinator for your department verifying that you are graduating. Please have it sent to [email protected]. You will be sent information and a checklist for moving out after your written notice is received. Please email
[email protected] with any questions. The vacating notice is final.
Animal Alert
When it gets cold outside, animals begin to seek warm places. Please be on the lookout for snakes and other animals. Dispose of trash in the dumpsters and close lids to trash and recycling receptacles.
Office Closed during the Holiday
Housing & Residence Life will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, November 23-25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
2
Lock Outs and Maintenance
The Borrowed Key Room in Echols will be closed for the Holiday as well. It will reopen on Sunday, November 27, from 4:00 p.m. to midnight when regular hours are resumed after the holiday. If you are locked out after Key Room hours, call the Facilities Service Desk (434-924-3053). Your call will automatically be forwarded to Systems Control, and an emergency call-back person will be dispatched to your location. You MUST show this person your ID and you will be billed a $75.00 fee. For emergency repairs, call the Facilities Service Desk at (434) 924-3053 (the phone will be forwarded to Systems Control after working hours).
Water Hose Reminder!
Please disconnect all water hoses attached to the exterior faucets, and put the hoses away for the winter! The cold temperatures during the winter (especially at night) cause them to freeze if left attached to the hose faucets, leading to broken pipes and significant damage. Any hoses found outside after November 7 may be removed by University personnel.
Have a Fire Safe Holiday!
With the holidays approaching, your thoughts and activities are probably divided between completing final papers, last-minute cramming for exams, and travel plans to visit family and friends. Here is some timely advice that may make your break a much safer one:
• Artificial & live trees are prohibited.
• Do not place decorations near sources of heat such as radiators, stoves, TV sets,
3
or lamps.
• Do not hang decorations from smoke detectors.
• Be sure that any electrical decorations, such as candles (regular candles are not allowed due to State Fire Code), lights, etc., bear the “UL” label. (Electrical lights or decorations are not allowed outside.) Decorative lights may be strung consecutively with no more than three (3) strands of lights. Do not use metal fasteners to hang/attach electrical decorations to surfaces.
• Be aware of the fact that your apartment can handle only so much electrical load. Additional demand in the form of trees and decorations may cause an overload! Disconnect unused appliances or equipment. An additional “UL” approved fused power strip may be worth the investment.
• BEFORE you leave for the holidays, disconnect all unnecessary appliances and equipment. DO NOT leave items such as irons, fans, curling irons, hair dryers, etc., plugged in. Close and lock all windows and lock the door.
Washing machines are prohibited
Please remember that portable clothes washing machines and dishwashers are not allowed in University Housing apartments. If you have one in your apartment, then you are in violation of the Terms and Conditions of your lease and you must remove the machine from your apartment.
