“And what happened to them?” Shirley Anderson asked as she handed me the Laotian Refugees folder. She had found it in my 62 years of church files as she was updating the history of The United Methodist Church of Geneva. I was embarrassed to admit I did not know.

Our church was one of eight who had sponsored the Phorasavang family when they came to Geneva after a year in a refugee camp in Thailand. Vanh, his wife, Baymone, and their three-month-old son, Boulina, arrived on February 10, 1980.

The First Baptist, St. Peter Catholic, Congregational, Fox Valley Presbyterian, Geneva Lutheran, Unitarian and St. Mark’s Episcopal churches worked with our congregation in renting and furnishing an apartment, in finding a tutor, in arranging for driving lessons and helping them to find jobs. The State Bank of Geneva and The First National Bank assisted by receiving contributions.

It was surprising how quickly the family became self-supporting and, once they no longer needed our aid, they seem to have been forgotten—until Shirley asked.

I went to the internet and googled “Phorasavang” and was frustrated to find nothing relevant. Then, after several hours, up popped an Elgin obituary in which the name “Baymone” appeard but it had a different last name: the Phorasavang was now Rasavong! Smooth sailing from then on.

I learned both took menial jobs where they could practice their English with fellow workers; Vanh then worked for ten years as a machine operator in Wheaton.

I learned that they lived in Geneva, having purchased 2010 Sheffield Lane, a newly-built home in the Williamsburg subdivision, on January 9, 1990.

I learned that Ronald, a second son, was born within a year of their arrival; he and Boulina graduated from Geneva High School and both were in the service.

I learned that Vanh and Baymone had opened the B&V Asian Market in South Elgin in 2002.

I took the unconfirmed information from newspapers and public records, with a copy of their picture from The Geneva Republican, to 2010 Sheffield innumerable times but never found anyone at home; when I saw on their Market website the store is open from 9 am to 8 pm, seven days a week, I understood why.

Then the folder got buried in one of many stacks of not-so-pressing matters. I forgot about them until I saw headlines in Geneva Patch on Tuesday morning, August 26: “Flames Shot from Second Floor of Home on Sheffield Lane”. I dug out the folder and was relieved that the Rasavong’s house number was 2010, not the 2004 of the house fire; I resolved to try again to catch them at home.

Imagine my chagrin when I drove by 2010 Sheffield last week and found it boarded up! Indeed, the fire was at their home. I saw later that Patch had made an address correction.

On Monday, September 17, Shirley and I took a road trip to The B&V Asian Market, 326 McLean Boulevard, to get reacquainted. The store is in a small strip mall a few blocks east of Randall Road.

As we entered, an attractive woman smiled as I said “Are you Baymone? I haven’t seen you in 32 years so I don’t recognize you.” She said “yes” and gave me a big hug; I do believe she remem-bered me! We did not see Vanh; he was in Chicago for the day.

Baymone showed us pictures of the boys and their families. Boulina, now 33, is stationed in Ger-many but will be home in November to join his wife and their two sons, ages 13 and 4. Ronald and his wife, Tanja, are now out of the Marines where they served in the 8th Engineer Battalion; they are living in the area with their two sons, now 4 and 1.

Baymone also said they are happy worshipping with friends at the temple in Elgin.

We talked a while and asked how we could help, thinking some of their furniture could be replaced from donations made to the upcoming rummage sale. But Baymone said all she needed was a sweater; the weather had turned cool and she had retrieved none of her clothes.

Fortunately, their insurance company has rented and furnished a nearby house for them while the contents of their home are being inventoried and cleaned. The time to repair and restore will take months—but warm clothes for Baymone are on the way!

Our next SERVICE OF HEALING will be held on Sunday, November 4th, 5:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Geneva. We hold this joint service on the first Sunday of each month, rotating between UMCG and St. Mark’s. For more information, please call Joan Peterson at 630-443-0007.

November 4 - All Saints SundayIn the opening prayer of all three services, we read the names of the members of our church who

have died since last All Saints Sunday. We also read the names of our members' immediate families who have died in that period. We light a candle for each. We sing "For All the Saints," a hymn of faith in the power of God's resurrecting love to unite us in a mysterious community of all the saints, living and dead. We celebrate holy communion at all three services and remember God's resurrecting love in Jesus. Pastor Bill Obalil's sermon, "Unbound and Set Free," reflects on the raising of Lazarus in John 11:32-44.

November 6 - Election Day Communion: A Community ServiceTuesday, November 6, our nation, our community and our families will be divided.

We will make different choices for different reasons, hoping for different results. Whatever your choice, you’re invited to join us at the table together for Election Day Communion to celebrate our unity in Christ and our hope in the reign of God’s kingdom on earth.

Three brief communion services will be offered: 6:30am, 12pm or 6:30pm.

November 11 - Celebration of Ministry and Retirement of Mortgage

ONE UNIFIED SERVICE AT 10:00 AM

We begin with a procession of ministries to a hymn with music written by Scott Stevenson for this service. We hear memories of the step of faith taken to expand the building and witnesses to the ministries for which it is home base. We pray in this house of prayer as we do every Sunday. Pastor Bill Obalil turns our focus from building to God in his brief sermon, "Tabernacle." And we burn the mortgage.

November 18 - Lithuania Partnership CelebrationAndrew Bordoni, Frank Gondorchin, and Pastor Bill Obalil report on how they see God working

with our Taurage sisters and brothers in faith. At 10:45, Mary Kafer is confirmed.

November 25The psalmist writes "I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart..." on the last Sunday of

November all worship services will be focused on giving God thanks. It may seem apropos to have a service of thanksgiving as we recover from our turkey leftovers and our national celebration of thanks. But thanksgiving, as Paul writes, is to be given to God in all circumstances and these services, led by Pastor Rob Hamilton, will seek to have us do just that; offer God our thanks with our whole heart in the midst of all of our circumstances. Grayson Michael Dellinger will be baptized at the 9:00 service.

Angel Tree Project

Once again this year our church will be participating in the Tri-City Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project, wherein church members will be able to purchase gifts or gift cards for de-serving children and youth in the Tri-Cities. We expect to be assigned 80 “angels” for whom we will be purchasing gifts. These are children who receive services throughout the year from the Tri-City Salvation Army in St. Charles.

The Angel Tags will be on display in the Fellowship Hall mid-November. You may choose an “angel” tag from the tree that indicates child’s age, size, and possible gift idea. Unwrapped

gifts with ½ Angel tag attached should be returned to church by December 14, to allow time for distribu-tion prior to Christmas.

In addition to the Angels, we would like to collect gift cards or money toward the purchase of gift cards that will be distributed to Lazarus House, Hesed House, and Salvation Army. Gift cards from Target, Wal-mart, Meijer, etc. or gas cards are appropriate in amounts of $20-$25. Fast food or movie theater gift cards are always popular with teens. If you purchase a gift card, please indicate the amount somewhere on the card or envelope or deposit a donation (payable to UMCG) in the “Gift Box” that will be located near the Angel Tags.

All gifts must be received by December 14. Thank you for sharing the gift and hope of Christmas.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS

Once again we are closing in on the holidays. I have had the privilege of being asked by numerous members when the Salvation Army Bell Ringers sign-up sheets will be available. Members of our congregation are again quick to step forward to help in our community. We will be located at the Batavia Wal-Mart store beginning the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, 11/23 and 11/24, continuing in December on Saturdays, 12/1, 12/8, 12/15, and 12/22. Sign-up sheets will be posted in Fellowship Hall in November.

If you are new to our congregation, please consider donating an hour of your time and have a direct impact for those in need in the Fox Valley. If you have any questions, please call Mark Weber at 630-513-8866 (home) or 630-363-8866 (cell). Thank you.

Feed My Starving Children

Next Trip to Feed My Starving Children

People describe packing meals at Feed My Starving Children as a “rewarding, humbling, exhilarating, worthwhile, competitive, and team building experience.” Plus it is a lot of fun!! In a two hour shift, thousands of meals will be packaged and boxed to be shipped all over the world. These meals provide nourishment to infants and children who would otherwise die of malnutrition. Our next date to mix and weigh “chicken, veggies, soy, and rice” is Tuesday, November 13 for the 2:30 to 4:30 shift. We only have 20 slots, so please sign up on line, or on the sign up carousel in Fellowship Hall. If you have any questions, please call David Erickson at 630-848-7135 or e-mail [email protected].

Annual "Thanksgiving Feast Supper" at Third Tuesday Suppers November 20

Plan on joining the Third Tuesday community on November 20th for a special dinner filled with seasonal treats and to share Christ's hospitality with our neighbors.

November 20, from 4:30-7pm, the no reservations, "Just Show Up" meal includes roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, hot vegetable, cranberry sauce and our legendary dessert buffet. Last year we welcomed a record breaking crowd of more than 700 guests.

We always need workers for shifts of prep through cleanup and our fabulous bakers make the dinner extra special with donations of baked goods. Our focus is on pumpkin and apple this month--but any dessert treat is most graciously gobbled up. (turkey pun intended!)

Why not join us this month for supper--and invite a guest? You will leave the supper smiling--we guarantee it! Careful--these evenings can be habit forming.

Questions? Would you like to be placed on our Third Tuesday Friends email list? Contact Beth Kucera at [email protected] or 630-513-8670.

The End of Another Rummage Sale!

Twas the day after rummage, and as you can see,There is no more rummage. We shouted with GLEE!We started the week with a whole group of men,Who set up the tables and racks, and THEN. . .Another whole group went out in some trucksTo pick up the stuff, too large for your TRUNKS!

We begged for donations, and you really came through,With clothes and furniture and dishes like NEW.We were filled to the rafters, our workers worked late,To get everything sorted and priced by our DATE!The pricers were pricing, the bakers were baking,The sellers were ready, the buyers were WAITING!

When the doors finally opened, the people were thrilled,And they just kept on coming, with lots of dollar BILLS.They shopped and they bought and they came back for more. Not many were grumpy when they walked out the DOOR.

They shared their dear stories, of joys and of strain. You’d be surprised by how many of us can share in their PAIN.So we stopped and we listened, though there was much work to do.Tis more important to comfort than to be on the MOVE.God truly provides, and our Lord is amazing,How else could I stand here, though my eyes are a bit GLAZING.

The stuff is all gone (kind of) and the church is now clean,But our work carries on when we see such a NEED.So thank you to ALL, you really came through. We will wait till next year and then do it ANEW.

We know that each and everyone of you have touched this rummage sale in some way. Just your presence in our church shows that you support a ministry that is, at times, hard on our building and hard on our backs. But a week of rummage is truly good for the soul and our hearts. The numbers are still coming in, but our Bake Sale made $707 and Rummage is at $8,800 for a grand total of $9507. We are so glad that God continues to bless our work.

With love and gratitude,

Your Rummage Committee

Thank You!

Dear United Methodist Church friends,

Our family moved to Geneva in the Summer of 1962, transferring membership of Mac and Yvonne McElroy, and beginning a 50-year association with your church. My Mother, Ed and I were confirmed here, participated in MYF activities, and both of us were married here (when the Sanctuary was in the new Fellowship Hall).

Our father, Mac, was a faithful pancake flipper for many years (we have a great photo of him in action!) and was involved in Scholarship activities. Mac and Yvonne attended church regularly for many years, until health prevented them in recent years.

Both Mom and Dad read the newsletter and weekly sermon/service mailed to them faithfully, and in the past few years since Dad passed away, Mom would engage me in frequent discussions of the printed sermons.

Mom greatly appreciated parish visitors, those wonderful Third Tuesday Supper delivery visits, the church library’s 90th birthday/book designation, and many other personal contacts and support of church staff and members.

In particular, Mom’s recent special friendship with church member Marie MacKenzie, the ongoing support of Rev. Obalil and other staff, and continued contact with the fine church and family friends John and Barb Andersen, and Art and Hazel Clauter — were all special blessings.

Our sincere thanks to the United Methodist Church of Geneva and your ministry of friendship, service, and gospel.
