Dear all...Remember November!

Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot, there is good reason why (as well as) gunpowder treason (some things) should never be forgot.

Bolton-le-Sands is famous for its bonfire and fireworks and I have remembered to get tickets (have you?) and am looking forward to being part of our community gathering together for a great celebration.

We will gather again as a community to remember on the 11th of November, Remembrance Sunday, parading down to the war memorial at 10.45, when we will pay our respects to all those who lost their lives serving our country. Sadly, Remembrance Sunday today doesn’t ask us to have long memories. Earlier this year I was at the funeral of Sgt Nigel Coupe from Lytham St Anne’s, who died in Afghanistan; I will never, ever forget the tears on the faces of his fellow soldiers as the bugler played The Last Post. For all of us, when we remember those whom we have loved but who have passed away, our memories can be a mixture of joy and sadness; even if many years have passed by. This is why the Parish Church is offering A Time to Remember for anyone who wants to light a candle for a loved one; so do come at 4pm on the 4th November to Holy Trinity.

November is a time when we are called to remember and to look back, but we always live in the light of eternity and so it is also a time when we begin to look forward to Advent and to Christmas and start our preparations. But if (when!) the relentless commercial pressure piles on, just remember November, and do December differently; remember that our lives, our families and our communities have eternal significance that will be remembered long after flashing Santas.

Every Blessing,

Nancy

Church of England parish churches belong to their communities. The vicar prays for the community. St Mark’s is there for Nether Kellet and Holy Trinity for Bolton-le- Sands. Holy Trinity, in one way or another has been at the centre of this community for almost a thousand years. It is full of memorials from previous generations of people from Bolton-le-Sands who have contributed to the life and upkeep of the ancient place as it passed through their generation. Our community today has much love and respect for a place that is there for them for all the big events of life. You don’t have to come to church every Sunday morning for it to still be your parish church (but of course, as your new vicar, it would be lovely to see you all at some point in the next few months – do come along to say hello sometime).

I want to be open and honest with you about where the church is at financially, which is look-ing like a £10k shortfall by January, which isn’t bad really considering those who come give about £100k each year because of their faith and commitment.

Looking forward could be a bit leaky: the 5 yearly check-up has just been done and parts of the roof of Holy Trinity are looking, well, rather pre-Victorian (let’s just call it “Holey” Holy Trinity) and St Mark’s at Nether Kellet has leaky windows. Other generations have managed it, and I have faith that we folks in the twenty first century can manage it too. You might have a leaky roof, but you’ve got a spangly new vicar who will pray for you every step of the way. If you would like to do your bit, you can drop a cheque through the vicarage door (117 Main Road) made out to “Holy Trinity PCC”; direct through the bank or online to Holy Trinity PCC 01-01-60, 94801703; or you could always come and sit through one of my sermons and give in thanksgiving when it finishes.

Blessings,

Nancy

Betty Scott was our speaker at the October meeting in the Community Centre. Her talk “How I became a Millionaire” traced the story of her life, from early childhood as, she said, a ‘mollycoddled’ only child, through to joining the Christian Union, early days as a trainee hospital lab technician and her determination to follow a career in nursing. Betty felt that God had called her and enabled her to become a Ward sister in Midwifery, a Counsellor in the Billy Graham Rallies in the 1950’s and, in the 1960’s, a Missionary in the Belgian Congo at the time of their Independence, when there was great upheaval.

Despite her feelings of inadequacy as a youngster and the early (and often humorous) blunders of youth, Betty had been led to a real relationship with Jesus. As she quoted, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5: 17). So many small ‘miracles’ along the way re-enforced her trust and commitment, empowered her to go forward in her chosen career and led to her lifetime of faith.

As a member of Mothers’ Union herself, Betty has promised to return to tell us tales from her later life in Burundi and Rwanda, which began on her 60th birthday. An inspirational story which led Betty to describe herself as a “Spiritual Millionaire”!

On behalf of our branch and Tunstall Deanery, I have recently attended meetings in our Diocese, where we now have 4,411 members, a figure down by 223 members in a year. Nationally there is real concern about falling membership and a “Make us Grow” campaign encourages us to welcome new people. So please do be aware of anyone who might enjoy the Mothers’ Union and invite them to our meetings.

• The MU Caravan on Westgate in Morecambe has been a holiday home for 66 children and adults this summer, and our deanery was thanked for the help we have given, both practically and financially.

• Christine Mullineaux from Lancaster is to be the new Editor of MU News from January 1st, following the retirement of Bron England.

• Jean Pearson, wife of Bishop Geoff, has joined MU and has been invited to be a Diocesan Vice-President.

• Lynne Tenby, York Provincial President, is to be the new Worldwide President of Mothers’ Union, following the retirement of Rosemary Kempsell.

Our next meetings are 7th November Coffee Morning in the OBGS and 21st November at 2pm in the Community Centre when our Speaker will be Margaret Watkins - her subject is “Hats”. If you have a special memory about a hat, you can share it with us that afternoon – wear the hat to the meeting if you like!

With all good wishes, and wishing you God’s blessing for yourself and your families,

Pam Bentley, Enrolling Member

Remembrance Sunday: The Horrors of the Trenches Three generations of my family fought in the world wars. My great grandfather and grand-father survived the trenches of World War 1 and my father flew Lancasters as part of Bomber Command in World War 2. As a family we are immensely proud of them, in fact when asked at school, ‘Who won the war?’, my 7 year old nephew put his hand up and answered ‘my grand-dad.’

As the years go on and veterans are lost to us we are no longer in contact with living history. My grandfather Ernest Aldridge wrote about his time fighting in the Somme. Here is an extract for Remembrance Sunday.

“My first hand-to-hand encounter with the enemy occurred three months after my landing. We were ordered to occupy some trenches in front of a little village a few kilometers from Ypres. When we arrived at our respective positions, I was one of a party of 20 that were picked to attack a small German trench that was but 30 yards from ours, from which the enemy threw bombs into our trench.

Hand bombs were then in their infancy, just a tin can with nails, broken glass, bits of iron, some powder and a small length of fuse tipped with phosphorous. A striking part of an ordinary matchbox was fastened to the wrist on which the fuse was struck. Sometimes, if the thrower did not judge the burning of the fuse correctly the bomb would either burst in mid air or give you time to throw it out of the way before it exploded. This was the case with a party of four of us. Just before creeping out on our venture, we were awaiting the order to attack when a hand bomb dropped into our midst striking one man on the head and falling into the lap of another. Fortunately he did not ‘lose his head’ but instantly threw it away, just before it exploded!

At that moment we were given the word to move out over the trench, as quietly as possible. We waited for our bombers to throw their bombs and then we covered the 20 yards quickly to get there before the enemy recovered from the shock and the explosion of the bombs. Our comrades opened out a heavy rifle fire to cover us. The enemy retaliated but he had not reck-oned upon our covering the 20 yards so he was aiming behind us and we got through with but 3 men hit.

We entered the trench and found eight of the enemy. Two were killed, three wounded and the others were too shaken to offer any resistance. But just then reinforcements from their main trench came pouring in and a deadly combat took place. All else was forgotten, only the one idea burned in the brain -the fight for life -man changed to a beast. It was all screaming, yelling and cursing from those who were fighting and groans from the wounded.

Our young people

My life was saved by a man who had adopted me when I joined the regiment and he had taught me much. I was engaged with a German. I had him in a corner of the trench and was about to make a final plunge when I was caught around the feet by another wounded Ger-man. I fell and my opponent, quick to seize his chance, came to bayonet me as I lay. I can see the devilish grin on his face as I write - I was his prey. But, luckily my friend saw what was happening and fired at a few yards range blowing part of the man’s head away. Even then, I only barely escaped; my opponent was still holding his rifle with bayonet pointed at me when he fell. I was able to move just a little and his bayonet struck me on the back of the neck - the mark I shall always have. Sadly my friend was treacherously shot dead by a wounded German a few minutes later. I shall never forget it. How I got through I cannot tell - it seemed that I was given power above my own.”

A first hand account from the grandfather of Nikki Garnett

A time to rememberThis special service of remembrance and thanksgiving for all who have died will take place at 4.00pm on November 4th at Holy Trinity. It will be an opportunity for us to remember and to offer our prayers for all our departed loved ones.

Dear friends...Having watched ‘Victorian Farm’ and ‘Edwardian Farm’ I felt I must also watch this new series. For those of you who know the programme maybe, like me, you are amazed at the never ending talents of the presenters, Ruth Goodman in particular. Only Ruth could make the potassium in the ash that results from a wood fire sound exciting! ‘Wartime Farm’ for me, born after the war, has brought home the conditions that ordinary people faced and that my parents told me about; food shortages, rationing, pressure on farmers to produce more and more crops with ever increasing urgency, and for all people to ‘make do and mend’!.

This November, as every November since the end of the 1st World War, we will be remembering those people who gave their lives, were injured or bereaved during the conflicts of the 20th and 21st century. Wars and conflicts continue, people are still killed, injured and bereaved and ordinary people still continue to experience hardship and deprivation.

Susan Durber the principal of Westminster College, the URC college in Cambridge, has written a reflection for November 11th, on Psalm 127 which is printed in the 2012 Prayer Handbook. I would like to share it with you:

‘Today we weep and mourn for the heritage we have lost and for the ones who died before they had fully lived.Today we remember the sons and daughters of all humanity whom no guard could protect and who were killed or hurt in war.Today we recall houses blown to rubble and cities devastated by fire, nations brought to ruin and peoples destroyed.Today we remember and let the silence fall...And tomorrow we will pray that our cities will be guarded in peace, that our houses will be built in freedom, and that all our children will grow old.And tomorrow we will speak even with our enemies so that all will flourish and justice may come, so that God’s people will enjoy the rewards of peace, and never again pay the bitter price of war.’

With my best wishes

Yolande

Shining StarsEarly September saw the commencement of the Autumn Term. Some of the toddlers had moved on and have been replaced by younger children – our numbers in our fourth year remaining unaltered.

Friday 28th September saw the National Coffee Morning for MacMillan Cancer Support. The children decorated Gingerbread Men with coloured icing and, although we anticipated they would take them home, many were consumed on the spot. In addition, some of the mothers made cakes and these were sold to increase the contribution to the charity.

Harvest FestivalOur Harvest Festival was held on the morning of the 30th September. In the evening, our Choir led us in words and music.

The following morning, fruit and vegetables and other items were distributed locally and in the even-ing we celebrated with our usual Harvest Supper after which the surplus donations were auctioned. An amount of £87 was raised and this was donated to ‘Commitment for Life’.

My wishes came true when we had a lovely sunny weekend for our Harvest Festival celebrations. Even the flowers in the church garden seemed to have revived once the heavy rain had stopped and the sun appeared.

At our morning service we welcomed Nancy for her first service with us here at St Mark,s. The children brought their harvest baskets and took the collection. In the evening Nancy and family came along with friends from Holy Trinity. So with our little church almost full we did our best to raise the roof with our Harvest Hymns – one of which was “Come Ye Thankful People Come”. When we came to the third line, “All is safely gathered in” – I had to add a BIG PLEASE. My final thought for the day, as I came back from delivering a harvest gift, was that my plea for everything to be gathered safely in had been answered when I saw a field of Big Bale Silage - still in a field, but safe and dry in their plastic wrappings.

Lastly, but by no means least, A VERY BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make our little church look so lovely, and for your help with delivering the harvest gifts the following day

World in one countryAt our September meeting, we Trefoil ladies had an interesting slide show about the Maces’ Saga holiday to South Africa. Off they went last November, flying to Johannesburg for a “World in One Country” trip. From there, they went on to Pretoria and the Boer war memorial.

On a damp dull day they visited the Kruger National Park, travelling in an open topped vehicle. Because of the cool conditions they were lucky to see animals on the move and not resting in heat, which would have been the case if the weather had been hot. So we had lovely shots of elephants, rhino, zebra, reed buck, impala, lions, water buck, monkeys, spotted hyena, kudu, giraffe, wildebeest, vultures and a fish eagle. The national flower of South Africa is the protea, and they come in many colours as their close up shots showed. An unusual tree was an umbrella thorn.

Next they travelled to Lesotho via the Sani pass, with dramatic views and steep drops to disaster to add to the excitement of the journey. A visit to Durban was followed by a flight to Port Elizabeth. They found it hard to accept the conditions of life in the shanty towns, where the coloured people struggle to exist, selling crafts and goods from a table cloth on the pavement. There is a long road ahead to achieve equality.

At a seaside town, Kny Sna, they went to an ostrich farm. One egg from an ostrich is equivalent to sixteen hen’s eggs. In Cape Town, it was a must to go to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and worked in the quarry.

The Kirstenboch botanical gardens were a riot of unusual plants, with the proteas well to the fore. Bouders and Fals Bay gave them a sight of African penguins in a rough sea.

They enjoyed the trip with Saga, and were glad to go with a group because to go out and wander in the towns alone was rather eerie and not to be recommended to elderly visitors. You got the feeling that it was not too comfortable a place to linger!

The Collation and Induction of The Reverend Nancy GoodrichOn Friday 28th September 2012, The Reverend Nancy Goodrich was collated by the Bishop of Blackburn, Nicholas Read, and inducted by the Archdeacon of Lancaster, Michael Everitt, as Vicar of Holy Trinity and St Mark’s. Following this lovely service, we enjoyed a fantastic Jacob’s Join supper at Bolton-le-Sands Cof E Primary School. We welcome Nancy and her family to our parish.

Men’s GroupThe first meeting of the new season for the Holy Trinity Men’s Group was a supper at the Hawthorns restaurant, when sixteen members attended. Following the meal, chairman Keith Budden divided the members into five groups of three who all took part in a quiz. The first twenty questions were identifying photographs of famous people. After this came another section of general knowledge questions. Everybody enjoyed their evening out. The next meeting will be on Monday November 12th, when Robert Swain will describe “A Visit To Sydney”.

FundraisingThank-you very much to all those who helped, supported and attended the Harvest Ceilidh on Saturday 13th October. We raised £158 for church funds

Great fun was had by all although we, as a congregation, cannot count, do not know our left from our right or even know our own gender! Northern Lights were our fantastic band for the evening and made sure that everyone got on their feet and had a good time.

Russell, from Potts’ Pies, provided an excellent hotpot supper, which was the nourishment we needed after all the dancing.

The Messenger - 2013It will soon be time for regular subscribers to renew their subscription to THE MESSENGER. Following feedback and some ‘consumer research’, we have set the cover price at £1 per issue for 2013, but for those who pay by annual subscription, the cost will be £8 for the year, which covers 10 editions, work-ing out at 80p per copy. The increase in cost largely reflects increase in printing costs, and reflects the fact that the cover price had been very low for a number of years. Of course, any subscribers who wish to add the £2 saving as a donation to Church funds will be most welcome to do so! If you are not a regular subscriber, and would like to take advantage of the lower price and having the magazine deliv-ered to your home, please contact Kathy Edwards - 824518

For those who do not subscribe regularly, The Messenger is on sale at : Holy Trinity ChurchBolton-le-Sands Post Office and Sands NewsThe Spar Shop, Bolton-le-SandsThe current edition is also available to read at Bolton-le-Sands Library

Was it Keats who called this time of year a time of “mists and mellow fruitfulness”? Well, to that I can add – “and the chink and clatter of coins as they tumble from the collecting boxes to the flowery tin tray beneath.” (It’s been the same tray for many years now!) Yes, collecting time for 2012 is over and we have raised a grand total of £786.20. (Are there 10 people anywhere who will donate £1 each, and I’ll add the £3.80 and round it up to £800?) But seriously, in any case it is a wonderful result, and we have done well – AGAIN!

You knw, I have very fond memories of this time of year, and remember with great affection many peo-ple who have given faithful support to the cause. It is sad that such a lot of them are here no longer, for they and others have made happy memories for me. What tales I could tell of my OPEN DAYS, smiles and laughter down the years. Such warmth and friendliness have made my job worthwhile. It has never been just the money, but always the people behind it, giving generously with love and a willingness to help those less fortunate. So, I thank you all and wish you well and ask you to continue to support us for another year until “the season of boxes, coins and counting” comes around again.

Love and God Bless

Margaret Hutchinson (Children’s Society Parish Coordinator)
