Product description

NOVAlobeThe NOVAlobe pumps are positive displacement rotary lobe pumps designed for high viscosity liquids specifi-cally to meet the hygienic requirements of the sterile process technology.

Technical data

ApplicationsThe NOVAlobe range offers reliable, efficient and hygi-enic operation even under the most arduous conditions. The pumps can operate bi-directionally and are suitable for a wide range of applications, such as:

Food and beverage• Breweries (e.g. yeast)• Dairies (e.g. yoghurt with fruit)• Soft-drink applications (e.g. syrup)• Food processing industries (e.g. chocolate and

jam).

Pharmaceutical industry• Vaccine/fermentation broth• Blood products• Biotechnology• Cosmetics (e.g. shampoo and lotion).

Other industrial applications• Pulp and paper• Textile industry• Chemical industry (e.g. oil)• Paints/adhesives.

Performance range

The illustration is only intended as a guide. For exact pump selection, please contact HILGE.

Product features and benefitsNOVAlobe pumps offer the following product features and benefits:

• Hygienic/sterile design• Reversible flow operation• Options to suit product• High volumetric efficiency• Unique rotor location and drive system• Choice of connection type and size• Rotor profile options to suit product• Single-flushed and double mechanical seals• Lip seal and O-ring sealing options.

Optional featuresThermal jacketsThermal jackets are available for the front cover and rotor case and are used to help control the temperature of the pump and the pumped liquid. The thermal jackets are suitable for both heating and cooling.

Pressure relief valveThe pressure relief valve is a safety device, preventing overpressurisation and subsequent damage to the pump. Pressure relief valves are incorporated in the front cover.

Aseptic front coverBy means of a circulating barrier fluid, the aseptic front cover together with the double mechanical seals increase safety when operating with high-containment requirement applications.

NOVAlobeRotary lobe pumpsCertification

Approvals and certificatesThe design, materials used and surface finish are subject to the QHD (Qualified Hygienic Design) regula-tion.

The QHD is a two-phase testing system for the hygienic design and cleanability of components, machinery and plant for aseptic or sterile applications.

The purpose is to ensure that all surfaces can be cleaned (Clean-In-Place (CIP)).

The QHD symbol can only be used by manufacturers to indicate conformance to QHD guidelines.

CertificatesHILGE offers a number of certificates and approvals for different purposes. The following types are available:

• Hygienic design certificate in compliance with the QHD recommendations(approval according to 3A sanitary standard and EHEDG is pending).

• Material certificates(certificates stating material specifications).

• Performance certificates(test reports guaranteeing and certifying test data of QH, current consumption, speed, curves, etc.).

• Authorized test by third party(surveyed performance test).

• ATEX-approved sanitary pumps(according to ATEX-directive 94/9/EC).

The certificates must be ordered with the pump.

Surface finish of hygienic pumpsIn order to meet the requirements of the pharmaceu-tical, food and the beverage industries, Grundfos has developed the following surface finish requirements:

Rotor typesThe NOVAlobe pump unit is able to accommodate different lobe shapes within the same rotor case config-uration. This feature allows the NOVAlobe pump to handle a wide range of applications maximising volu-metric efficiency.

Rotor design

Particle size

ApplicationsUni-wing rotors offer particular advantages for gentle solids handling and dough-like products.

Standard bi-wing rotors offer a robust and popular choice for most standard applications.

Tri-wing rotors are available for solids handling capa-bility with reduced pulsation as compared to standard uni- and bi-lobe rotors.

Cycloidal multi-lobe rotors offer low-shear, gentle product handling with the lowest pulsation levels avail-able for lobe pumps.

Other rotor types are available on request.

Mechanical sealThe NOVAlobe offers easy to replace, front-loading seals, mounted on replaceable shaft sleeves in a cartridge arrangement to further simplify maintenance.

The operating range of the mechanical seal depends on the type of seal, operating pressure, liquid temperature and the viscosity of the liquid.

Standard mechanical seals are described below; other seals are available on request.

Standard seal arrangementsAs standard, HILGE offers three seal arrangements.

ApplicationsDesigned for hygienic applications, the single mechan-ical seal covers the most common operating conditions in terms of operating pressure, temperature and speed.

The single mechanical seal, flushed, is used where liquids tend to crystallise, harden or vaporise when getting into contact with the atmosphere.

Designed for sterile and aseptic applications, the double mechanical seal is suitable for hazardous, toxic and abrasive liquids.
