The End of All Things???

Now that I have your attention, this week is the end of the liturgical year. Our first two readings are rather apocalyptic

in nature, but the Gospel speaks to Jesus as the humble servant leader we have chosen to follow. His death seemed to be

the end of all things for his followers, yet we know and believe it to be something completely different! How do you

embrace the endings in your life? Might you sit with those sadnesses and ask God to show you hope instead?

Next weekend, we begin a season of hope—Advent. To help you enter into this time prayerfully:

Our online Advent Retreat will be live next Sunday and accessible on our website at ololmke.org/advent-prayer/.

Something new to the retreat experience is to have the retreat emailed to you! Go to the Advent Prayer page on our

website and sign-up.

Deb Steppe and I will be offering an evening of Advent Prayer in Room 9 at 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 2.

Consider setting aside the “stuff” of the holidays for an hour as we enter into this beautiful season of hope.

Our annual Women’s Retreat will convene at the Siena Center in Racine the weekend of January 28-30. This year, we

will ponder “Hope: Seeing Through the Prism of Faith.” Sign-up information can be found on the bulletin board outside

of Room 10, or by contacting the Parish Office. By the way, this experience makes for a great Christmas gift.

Finally, A great act of hope and love is to help us develop a strategic plan for this parish community. We would really

like to hear from you, especially if you did not participate in the survey this summer. To that end, we are offering three

listening sessions to hear your thoughts:

Sunday, December 5, during the GIFT session in the Parish Hall

Sunday, December 12, 9:00 am–10:15 am in Hall B and C

Monday, December 13, via Zoom from 7:00 pm–8:00 pm. Please note, we need to send you a link for this session so,

please register at [email protected] before December 13, at 12:00 pm (noon).

May your endings be the gateway to new life and hope.

Faithful with little, with much and with ALL

We have all been blessed abundantly, and this weekend we are called to embrace the fullness

of our giftedness and reflect our joy back to God as we share our abundance to strengthen our

parish ministries. Through our commitment, we are living as God intended: as disciples of Christ.

Through our commitment we are disciples of the gospel message, building the kingdom of God.

Every gift is valued - and needed. Thank you for your pledge of financial support for our parish

and our ministries. If you have not prayerfully discerned your pledge this weekend, we ask that you

spend time this week, and return your pledge commitment next weekend. In gratitude, we take up

the challenge to be faithful with little, with much and with all.

Did you know that your IRA can help Our Lady of Lourdes

Individuals who are 70 1/2 or older may transfer any amount up to $100,000 to Our Lady of

Lourdes, or a qualified charity, from their IRA without any tax liability as a QCD. To pursue this

method of donation, or as your pledge, please contact your IRA custodian to begin the process.

GIFT: Celebrating Pope Francis’s Synod

Pope Francis has shared two goals for this synod: to reshape the Church’s

ability to engage and to revitalize its mission. This must start with the Church

mastering the art of encounter as a participatory, listening church. How do we

accomplish that? With you! Join Steve Syzmanski and Maggie Russell as they

break down the Synod and, in partnership with the OLOL Ad-hoc Committee,

lead a listening session to identify actions that can be taken to reshape our

ability to engage and to revitalize our mission.

TRUTHFULNESS

Truthfulness is the bedrock of

integrity on which we build all of our

other virtues. It is an ongoing

commitment to live by what is real,

authentic, and true for us. We make

realistic decisions. We do not lie,

cheat, or deceive. We tell the truth

kindly. Our promise is our bond. We

live by our own true nature.

The Gospel is full of antagonizing

questions aimed at Jesus. He clearly

states, “Everyone who belongs to the

truth listens to my voice.” As disciples

can we listen to the truth that Jesus

teaches as we make decisions? Can

you share an example?

Long Live the King

Did you know that you can become royalty, for the right price? It’s true, for

the low, low cost of $50, you, too, can purchase a 12-square-inch souvenir plot

of Scottish land and call yourself “Laird So-and-so.” Now, this lordship or

ladyship doesn’t come with the ability to boss anyone around, but maybe your

friends will be impressed enough to bend the knee.

My point is, we’ve all got our own little fiefdoms—folks or communities for

which we have a feeling of responsibility. Maybe we’re not their “king,” but

most of us have those we think of as “our people.”

Now, in this world, people lay themselves down for their kings. History is

riddled with the bodies of men, young and old—and plenty of women and

children, too—who were casualties of wars waged by men in power, men who

never had to shed their own blood. But in the next world, the King dies for his

people. This is leadership par excellence—the leadership of someone whose

love is greater than his ambition.

We are all leaders of a sort. On the parish level, you have the obvious

roles: serving on pastoral council, spearheading the capital campaign, leading

the Altar Guild. But you also have the quiet ones who lead from the wings: the

janitor who can always be relied upon to do his job, or the volunteer librarian

who puts in extra hours on the weekends.

There is a saying, find your people. I say, find your people, and find a way

to lay yourself down for them, in imitation of the greatest King that ever was.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

Christ the King of the Universe

This year, we turn to John’s Gospel to lead us in our consideration of Christ

the King. Here, we have the famous trial scene in which Pilate questions Jesus

only to find that he himself is on trial about the meaning of his life.

Jesus had no need to cling to status. He knew why he was born and sent into

the world. He claims that his only purpose in life was to testify to the truth.

Could anyone in history be freer than the man who says that? If being a king

means that nothing and no one can constrain you, then Jesus is the King of Kings

because he knows what he is about and no one can take that away.

Pilate discovered that in Jesus he was facing the most powerful person he

had ever met. Nothing Pilate could say or do, no bribe, no reward and no

punishment could sway this man. Worse yet, he obviously had the power to

influence others to imitate him.

Ultimately, that is the point of this feast. Those who choose Christ as their

king, buy into his preaching about the reign of God. As king, Jesus defined his

realm as one in which the greatest is the one who serves the most. In his realm,

the strongest have no need of coercion because those who seek the truth about

life will fall in love with him and stake their lives on the freedom he offers,

being willing to forsake everything else for it.

The people who choose to belong to the realm of Christ the King know their

primary identity comes from the God who loves us all. Their citizenship papers

are the baptismal certificates that entrust them with the mission to live by and

spread the values of God’s realm.

Cancellation and Closing Notifications: Parish App

Two weeks ago, we reminded you about where you can find information regarding event cancellations and building

closures due to inclement weather. Over these next few weeks, we want to expand on the details of how to receive this

information.

The parish app will be the first method we use to alert people. The app is the fastest way for us to alert you. You are

contacted through a push notification to your smartphone, and we can post the information on the top “card” of the app

home page. We can also post detailed information about closings and cancellations on a subpage linked to the card. TV

stations and text messages are limited in the amount of information we can communicate. The app gives us the fastest

method to give you the most details.

To download the app:

Search for “WeConnect Parish App” in the Apple App Store or

Google Play.

Download the app, and select “Our Lady of Lourdes Milwaukee”

as your parish.

Full details on how to use the app can be found at

ololmke.org/allabouttheapp/. Please use this link to learn how to

personalize the push notifications the parish sends out.

We will send the push notification out through the General group setting, which

is a default setting after you have downloaded the app. Easy peasy.

We are aware that not everyone has a smartphone so we will continue to use

every means necessary to alert people about closings and cancellations. If you do

have a smartphone, we encourage you to download this very effective

communication tool.
