O Come Let Us Adore Him

I’m writing this article on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving since we had to get the bulletins published early this week. My plan is to have dinner on Thursday with parishioners and friends at the home of Janie & Lyndal Mitchell (AKA “Mitch”). I have known the members of both Janie’s and Mitch’s families for a long time and so I always feel like family there. There are so many things to be grateful for this year—both the good and the not so good. The latter half of the past year has brought with it some not so serious, but vexing health problems that have led me to be more dependent on God’s strength than ever. Thank You, Lord for helping me in good times and bad, in sickness and health! I’m even more thankful for God’s gracious mercy. I’m thankful for loving me and forgiving me so much that I can’t help but be generous in the way I use my time, talent, and treasure in the service of his people, the church. By his grace I am compelled to give at least 10 cents on every dollar. I did that last year and saw my account swell by more than two hundred percent. Thank You, Lord! When Margaret let me know that she and Vic were going to be moving to Kansas before Christmas, I wondered who could possibly take her place. But within the space of a week, I got a call from Danny Jack who has taken Margaret’s place on Sundays when she’s been away asking to be considered to succeed her as Music Director. Turns out he has a tremendous resume revealing a host of musical gifts from organ and piano skills, to training in choir direction, arranging, and vocal skills on top of everything. Then Amber Johnson stopped after daily Mass to wonder if she could be considered for taking on the other aspect of Margaret’s role as Director of Adult Formation. Amber was a very successful coordinator of our children’s programs for a number of years until having to step aside for family reasons. God is so good, God is so Good, God is so good, He’s so good to us! So, I hope this thanksgiving weekend finds you with hearts full of gratitude. I am praying that you came to Mass this morning ready to renew your commitment to supporting the parish financially through Sacrificial Giving. God really does love cheerful givers, so be not afraid to put more pennies into your green envelopes. The more we give, the more we receive and that’s the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We cannot bribe God with our gifts, but make no mistake about it his ability to sustain us.

GIVING THANKS

FOR ALL THINGS

These people make it possible for ALPHA to begin with a meal. Each week they come and cook and then clean up for each ALPHA session. Making the experience of ALPHA special for each participant. We are grateful for their dedication and LOVE.

6th ALPHA FINISHES as ST ANDREW PREPARES to FORM DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS!

WHY DID YOU ATTEND ALPHA?

Spiritual Hunger The testimony of a fellow parishioner at mass Father Jack’s invitation A desire to be closer to members of the parish Needed a closer connection with God A friend’s invitation

ALPHA DAY

I felt on fire with the Holy Spirit running through my body

I felt the presence of the Lord in ME!

An experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone, but led to a CONNECTION with GOD and others that was greater than I could have expected!

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST?

Meeting new people Learning about the Bible Developing community-fellowship Reinforcing my love for Jesus Prayer – Friendship - Increased Faith Sharing with others and hearing their stories The joy Alpha has brought into my life is indescribable! Being closer to Jesus The videos-especially the ones that covered atheism Seeing how Alpha relates to EVERYTHING I do Seeing the transformation in some people

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF

HEALING PRAYER?

I was given the grace to be more forgiving. To have a good day was not so hard. I could feel God’s healing. It brought our table together in a serious manner. People have more problems than I do Peaceful and unexpected Hands on healing is AWESOME! It was the best session for me and for others at our table

HOW DID YOU ENJOY BEING PART OF A

SMALL TABLE GROUP?

It helped everyone open up and get close I enjoyed hearing different experiences and views I was able to relax and participate. That might not have happened in a larger group. It’s nice to be with the same people each week

I have been coming to St Andrew for more than 3 years and still do not feel at home. I joined the church as a member last August. I took a leap of faith to participate in ALPHA. It gives me hope that I can feel like an integral part of this community. I am willing to take more steps to get closer to the St Andrew community and fully belong.

MARGARET MOVING TO KANSAS

Margaret & Vic have decided—after much prayer & reflection--to make this move so as to live close by their daughter Veronica and husband, Ben, and their two precious granddaughters. They have purchased a home in Prairie Village, Kansas and Margaret will take on a new job as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Ann Parish

We owe Margaret a great debt of gratitude for the tremendous work she has done here over a span of more than 15 years. St. Andrew’s has arguably the best musical liturgy in the Archdiocese in large part due to her leadership. This has been attested to by countless visitors, including priests, over the years. We also have one of the most solid programs of adult formation that for the past two plus years has culminated with the fantastic Alpha Course that is providing so many people the opportunity to experience a closer tie to Christ and the Church.

These will be very difficult shoes to fill, but God never closes a door that he doesn’t also open a window. Not all of you may be aware of this but Vic has put in countless volunteer hours in many areas of parish life, but especially in helping us to have such a beautifully decorated church especially at Christmas and Easter. He will also be missed in the choir and the contemporary ensemble.

Many of us have had the joy of watching while their children, especially Ondrej, Thomas, and Christina have grown in wisdom, grace, and talent right before our eyes. Veronica was married here. The “Family Hochla” will be dearly missed by all of us. Thanks for the memories. The move is scheduled to take place in mid-December.

There will be a farewell reception on Sunday, December 10th after the 11:45 Mass in the Joyce Center. Come and thank them for so many years of service and to wish them well!

JOURNEY OF FAITH

Wednesday November 29th

7pm Joyce Center

JOF is the process we follow to lead inquirers

into the Catholic faith on their way to celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation. It began on August 30th with the first session of the ALPHA course and continues—with breaks-- until after Easter.

JOF is also for Catholics who didn’t receive

Confirmation or Eucharist as children, or who are simply in need of updating their understanding of the faith so as to become more intentional disciples of Jesus. Finally, it is for Sponsors who will accompany all these inquirers on the Journey.

Thank You Thank-you to everyone for the great kindness, love and cards during the illness and death of my father. The children are especially grateful for your attendance at the funeral and the lovely luncheon. A special thank- you to Father Jack.

Victor, Margaret, Veronica, Ondrej, Thomas, and Christina Hochla
