Preterit of –ar verbs

Use the preterit tense to talk about what

happened or what someone did at a specific point in time. To form the preterit of –ar verbs, like

comprar, add these endings to the verb’s stem.

Yo compré

tú compraste

El/ella/usted compró

Nosotros (as) compramos

Vosotros (as) comprasteis

Vosotros (as) comprasteis

ellos ellas compraron ustedes

yo compré nosotros(as) compramos tú compraste vosotros(as) comprasteis Ud. Uds.él compró ellos compraronella ellas

Ej) Yo compré un DVD ayer. Ej) Ella compró su boleto. I bought a DVD yesterday She bought her ticket.

** Note: The NOSOTROS form of –ar verbs look exactly like the PRESENT tense form. You will have to use CONTEXT clues to decide whether the speaker is talking about the present or past.

Ej) Isa y yo gastamos mucho ayer. Casi nunca gastamos tanto.Isa and I spent a lot of money yesterday.

We hardly ever spend so much.

**Remember: If the verb is REFLEXIVE you need to use a reflexive pronoun! ________________________________________
