Like any other verb conjugation, -ar, -er, and –ir verbs all have different endings when expressing an action that happened in the past

We have also learned that there are some verbs we cannot conjugate yet due to irregularities (surprise, surprise)

+Now for the exceptions. . . Below is a list of the following verbs that are

As annoying as this is, I know it helped when I was trying to remember the irregulars in the preterite.

Note: It does not have all the verbs we covered, and it has one verb that we will not cover (haber), but it has most of them!!!

However, these irregulars can be grouped up into three groups: -car, -gar, -zar verbs Stem-change loafers “Rule of 3” Verbs

+-car, -gar –zar verbs Each of these types of verbs has one thing in common:

ONLY THE YO FORM IS IRREGULAR

Below are the yo forms of each type in the preterite -car: qué -gar: -gué -zar: -cé

Here are some examples. . . Sacar: yo saqué Jugar: yo jugué Empezar: yo empecé

Notice that there are accent marks on these irregulars!!!

+Stem-change loafers!

These verbs get their name because they are stem-change verbs that are only irregular in the él/ella/usted and the ellos/ellas/ustedes versions!

Stem-change loafers are ONLY –ir verbs and there are accents!!!

Here are some examples: Pedir (e>i)- pidió, pidieron Competir (e>i)- compitió, compitieron Preferir (e>i)- prefirió, prefirieron Servir (e>i)- sirvió, sirvieron Vestirse (e>i)- se vistió, se vistieron Repetir (e>i)- repitió, repitieron Dormir (o>u)- durmió, durmieron Morir (o>u)- murió, murieron

+“Rule of Three”

The rule of three pertains to the amount of vowels in a row when conjugating in the preterite

If there are more than three vowels in a row, the second vowel changes to a “y” in the él/ella/usted and the ellos/ellas/ustedes form

Here are some examples: Leer: leyó, leyeron Construir: construyó, construyeron Oír: oyó, oyeron Creer: creyó, creyeron
