Welcome back to the RGPS Stadium for this much anticipated Ernest Armstrong Cup semi final fixture against Jarrow Roofing.

This has been a competition which has brought us many great many memories over the last couple of years and we now stand just 90 (or possibly 120) minutes from another appearance in the final.

These notes are being written prior to our league trip to Jarrow on Saturday so hopefully you are reading this following another important victory.

That trip to Jarrow was our third away trip since we entertained West Allotment Celtic in our last home match here 11 days ago. The match at Whickham brought a dramatic last minute winner from Marcus Laing, while the trip to Ryton and Crawcrook two days later ended in more drama with a stoppage time Mickey Dunwell equaliser.

Despite that late goal, it has to go down as one of the least enjoyable matches of the season, and not just because of the howling gale which made football almost impossible.

In better news, The Northern League has confirmed that should Ryhope CW’s ground not reach the required standard and they are relegated out of Division Two, the team finishing 4th will be promoted in their place. So we still have lots to play for as the season reaches its climax.

Our last two home games of the season have been made ‘Kids for Free’ games. Leaflets are being handed out around local schools and junior football teams over the next few days so we hope to attract large crowds to both matches.

A copy of the leaflet is printed in this programme and if you bring it to either/both games, your child will be admitted free with a full paying adult.

It is important these promotions are successful as we look to build a stronger link with the local community going forward so please spread the word and ensure the last two home games are well supported.

Finally I would like to offer a warm Northallerton Town welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Jarrow Roofing for tonight’s game. I hope you enjoy your second visit of the season and we wish you a safe journey home.

Good evening and welcome to all the supporters, players and officials of Jarrow Roofing Football Club and today’s match officials.

Well following another couple of hectic weeks playing 3 times a week, we welcome Jarrow tonight for the semi final

of the Ernest Armstrong Cup.

Our last home game against West Allotment Celtic 11 days ago ended in a tame defeat. Having said that, on reflection, a draw would have been a more realistic result.

Once again we were slow out of the blocks and consequently conceded a poor goal after only 4 minutes. We never looked like equalising afterthat, hence the defeat.

The Monday night then saw us travel to Whickham , never an easy place to go, but we dug in right until the end when Marcus scored the winner. It was a much better performance, especially in the second half.

We then went on to Ryton on Wednesday. I can only describe that as one of the worst games I have ever been involved in.

A howling gale, a man sent off, a late equaliser, a 21-man brawl and one of the worst dug-outs I have ever encountered.

On top of that it was what must surely be one of the worst pitches in the Northern League. Rather than elaborate, however, I think the travelling fans summed it all up well after the game.

On Saturday we are on our travels again to Morpeth Town, who like us are hoping to finish in the top 4, so a hard game is envisaged there too.

After that come the last two home games. I hope by then to have more news about next season, and what is to be, but until then myself and all the players wish you safe journeys on your travels in support of us.

JARROW ROOFING BCA FOOTBALL CLUB

Jarrow Roofing plays in the Ebac Northern League Division Two and was formed for the season 1987/88, beginning to play in the South Tyne Senior league.

When this league broke up at the end of their first season, Roofing moved to the Tyneside Amateur League. During their time in the Amateur League they won the Bill Dixon Cup and The League Challenge Shields, they were also runners up in the Gateshead Charity Shields and the League. In the season 1991/92 they moved to the Wearside League after developing their new ground at Boldon C.A. Sports Club. At the end of that season they were promoted to Division One as runners up.

In the season 1995/96 they were runners up in Division One and as Marske the champions did not have ground facilities in place, Roofing were promoted to the Northern League Division Two. They were promoted at the end of that season to Division One as joint runners up and also won the Craven Cup at their first attempt.

Jarrow Roofing remained in Division One until 2007/08 when they were relegated after finishing 22nd. In Division 2 they finished 16th in 2008/09. In the 2009/10 season Roofing finished 3rd and were promoted back the Northern League Division One. In 2010/11 Jarrow Roofing maintained their place in Division One after finishing 19th but were relegated in 2011/12. Jarrow Roofing has taken part in the charity event ‘Tyne & Wear Summer Cup’ in 2009/10 & 2010/11 and won both years..

The Main Sponsor for Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Association FC to give the club its full title, is Mr Richard McLoughlin the Managing Director of Jarrow Roofing Co. Richie to his friends has over 35 years experience in the Roofing business. Richie has always been involved with Football, initially as a Sunday League player with the local clubs around South Tyneside. Richie had a vision of sponsoring a club that could play a bit and move on through Saturday Football.

Richie sought the help of friend Brian Marshall who was Chairman of a Local Community Association in Boldon Colliery where there was a bit of land that perhaps could just hold a Football ground to set the ball rolling. Richie began to use weekends and borrowed machinery to build a ground after Brian had persuaded his Committee that it was a viable project. The ground slowly took shape and promotion to the Northern League Division Two was won via the Wearside league.

Town gave a debut to Neil Tarrant after his transfer from Dunston and had the better of the early exchanges. Steve Allison had a good opportunity but delayed his shot and the chance was wasted.

On 25 minutes, Jarrow took the lead as Nelson fired home from 25 yards. Stuart Hardy was causing the defence plenty of problems but the visitors restricted Town to mainly half chances and at half time it remained 0-1.

Town attacked straight from start of the second period with Neil Tarrant crossing for Martin Butterworth whose header was well saved by the Jarrow keeper. Then a clear push on Tarrant inside the penalty area was waved away by the referee. That looked to be crucial when, on 55 minutes, Elliott headed the visitors into a 2 goal lead.

But within 3 minutes Town reduced the arrears as Andy Ramsbottom crossed for Stuart Hardy, who ghosted in between defenders to head into the corner making it 1-2.

Hardy then turned provider as he crossed for Tarrant to score to make it 2-2 on 60 minutes. Aaron Ramsbottom was introduced for Steve Allison and he was soon in the thick of the action as he beat the keeper to a loose ball and fired home from 15 yards only to see the goal disallowed for an infringement against the goalkeeper.

Manager Mark Fanning introduced Stephen Butterworth on 76 minutes; within a minute his looping shot from 25 yards flew over the keeper to give Town a 3-2 lead. Jarrow equalised on 88 minutes when a header from Andy Ramsbottom went past his own keeper to make it 3-3.

The referee signalled 5 minutes of injury time and in the 92nd minute Peter Bulmer's corner found Craig Winter whose powerful header gave the keeper no chance making it 4-3.

Jarrow pushed forward and in the 94th minute a goalmouth scramble ended with a shot striking the post but Town hung on to record a superb victory. Both teams deserved credit for producing a pulsating cup tie, Towns reward for victory was ahome tie against Stokesley in the next round.

TOWN'S promotion hopes were left hanging by a thread as third-placed Jarrow Roofing left the RGPS with all three points on Wednesday evening.

In a match that Town could ill-afford to lose, Mark Fanning's side never recovered from the loss of an early goal by Mike Carson as Jarrow ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Starting the night nine points behind their visitors, Town knew a win here and in the return at Jarrow next month would put them right in the mix for a top-three finish and automatic promotion, but it was the Roofers who took a giant step closer an instant return to Division One.

Fanning's side showed two changes to the side that had lost to Billingham Synthonia in the League Cup a week earlier - Craig Winter and Michael Dunwell coming in for Grant Hickman and Colin Anderson.

But despite a bright start from Town, it was Roofing who went in front after 17 minutes when Carson scored directly from a corner, aided by a slip at the near post Marcus Laing which deceived goalkeeper James Briggs.

Town responded and could have been level by the break as Carl Chillingsworth headed wide before Dunwell fired into the side netting.

But the second half could not have got off to a worse start for Fanning's side as Anth Myers doubled the Roofing advantage within five minutes of the restart.

Town needed something quickly and Winter almost provided it with a header that landed on the roof of the net, but it was the visitors who sealed the points when Liam McBryde finished off a sweeping move twelve minutes from time.

And Town's misery was completed in the 87th minute when Darren Reay headed home a corner to make the final score 4-0.

The Rt. Ho. Ernest Armstrong PC.

Ernest Armstrong was born on January 12, 1915 at Stanley, Crook, (about 200 yards from the football ground). He played in the Northern League for Stanley United as a centre half, making his debut while at Wolsingham Grammar School. Following his retirement from football he became a Northern League referee and in his later life a vociferous supporter of the club and of the league.

His brother, Dick was secretary of Stanley for a time, succeeding an uncle, Rob Walker just after “The Crook Town Affair of 1929”. A cousin Dickie from Easington also played in the early 1930’s before joining Nottingham Forest.

Ernest went to the City of Leeds Teacher Training College and became a teacher. He was elected Member of Parliament for Durham North-West on October 15th, 1964 and was a Junior Minister with the Labour Government of 1974 – 1979 and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons from 1981 – 1987. He was succeeded in the House by his daughter Hilary following his retirement.

Mr Armstrong was elected President of the Northern League in 1981 and stood down in 1996, when the annual meeting of the league was held at his home in Co Durham. He died in Bishop Auckland General Hospital on July 8th, 1996.

TOWN'S promotion hopes were dealt a blow with defeat at Ryhope CW on Saturday but the eleven players who represented the club should feel nothing but pride for the effort and total commitment they showed throughout the 90 minutes.

With 6 players and manager Peter Mulcaster all missing, Town were always going to up against it, but their task was made even harder when three others failed to show on the day, leaving just the bare-eleven.

When Jon Burton, who had scored two goals in the last three matches, was then injured inside fifteen minutes, that task became mission impossible. Burton battled on bravely until finally succumbing ten minutes from time and that set the tone for a display that more than made up for in spirit what it maybe lacked in quality.

"I thought it was a great battling performance and effort from the lads today under the circumstances," said stand-in manager Martin Mulcaster, who had come off his sick-bed to fill in for his father. "I echo the disappointments of the players for the three lads that didn't come today, two of which contacted us late and one who just didn't turn up at all.

"We must now however forget about today and look to get back to winning ways in what will be a difficult game against a good Chester-le-Street team on Monday night."

The pre-match talk was all about Ryhope's ground, which recently failed an FA inspection, but that paled into insignificance when Mulcaster was thrown a curve-ball at the 11th hour.

Already missing Grant Hickman, Steve Banks, James Bowman, Ian Smurthwaite, Adam Emson and Carl Chillingsworth, Mulcaster's plans were thrown into complete disarray when Col Anderson, Dan Clayton and David Cooke all cried off at the last minute.

Therefore the team picked itself. Gav Parkin was employed in a more advanced role alongside Michael Dunwell in attack with Steve Butterworth and Marcus Laing in midfield. Burton and Alex Caisley took up the wide positions with a back four of Andrew Porritt, Danny Shoulder, Craig Winter and Stu Dunn in front of goalkeeper James Briggs.

Town started well and gave as good as they got for fifteen minutes until Burton went down with a nasty looking knee injury and he was unable to move freely afterwards.

And the hosts went in front five minutes later. The Town defence could only half-clear a corner from the right by Lee McMahan and Chris Winn drilled the ball back past Briggs from 20 yards with the aid of a deflection to take him on to 40 goals for the season.

Mulcaster's side regrouped and were close to an equaliser soon after. A shot from Parkin was tipped over the crossbar by Ryhope goalkeeper Chris Rooks, although he appeared to injure himself in the process and failed to reappear for the second half.

By then the hosts had doubled their advantage. A clearance from Shoulder was charged down by Chris Trewick on the edge of the Town penalty area and the ball rolled into the empty net.

Town needed something quickly at the start of the second period but it was Ryhope who grabbed a third goal six minutes after the resumption. The front two of Butler and Winn have found the back of the net nearly 90 times between them this season and they combined again to show that whichever league Ryhope are in next season, these two will surely be playing at a higher level.

Butler, unable to add to his impressive tally on this occasion, slipped in Winn in the inside right channel and he fired the ball across Briggs with the air of a man who knew he was not going to miss.

But out of adversity, Town showed great pride to find a way back into the match. Just four minutes later Parkin flighted over one of his trade-mark free kicks, and after the slightest of touches from Dunwell, Winter arrived to show he can finish as well as any 40 goal striker.

Had Town managed to find another goal now it would have made for an interesting final twenty minutes, but the nearest they came was a far post header by Butterworth that landed just the wrong side of substitute goalkeeper James French's right-hand post.

Burton, who had battled on bravely since the early injury, eventually hobbled off ten minutes from time and only the brilliance of Briggs prevented Ryhope adding to their tally in the closing stages. Twice he denied Butler with saves of the highest quality before going full-length to tip an effort from Michael Charlton around the post.

At the final whistle, the travelling Town fans showed their appreciation for what had been a magnificent effort from the boys in yellow and green, giving them a fully deserved ovation as they trooped off - beaten but in no way disgraced.

The possible impact of the no-shows was made clear when news of defeats for Morpeth and North Shields came through, meaning a win here would have brought 4th place ever closer. And with Ryhope's ground not looking likely to reach the required standard by the end of the season, that could still be good enough for promotion.

Ebac Northern League News, Results, Tables

The Ebac Northern League’s trail blazing and much discussed Secret Shopper initiative, aimed at tackling offensive language and unacceptable behaviour at football matches, has won a top FA award.

FA Respect manager Dermot Collins said the award marked out the league as one of the very best in the country. “They have done some truly great work, which we will use to inspire others.

“Through education, promotion, campaigning and dogged perseverance the league has changed the behaviour of teams and individuals and in doing so helped ensure the continuing health of our national game.”

Working with a panel of 16 unpaid volunteers, the Secret Shopper scheme sends monitors anonymously to report on matches across the North-East and Cumbria. Findings are then discussed with individual clubs and officials.

Since the initiative began, more than two-thirds of clubs have improved their average “Shopper” marks – many very substantially. Some clubs now plan initiatives of their own further to address offensive language and related issues.

Northern League chairman Mike Amos said that he was delighted the initiative had been recognized. “The award is really for all those guys who’ve endured the coldest winter in memory in order to keep our cards marked.

“We believe that gratuitously offensive language keeps many people, especially families, away from football and have invested a vast amount of time in trying to tackle it.

TOWN produced a performance as good as anything they have all season as they powered to another thrilling away victory at Moor Park last Monday evening.

As we reach the business end of the season, Peter Mulcaster's side have hit top form at just the right time to move to within four points of the top 4 and possible promotion.

After falling behind to a shock goal from Michael Hepplewhite, Town hit back as superb efforts from Mickey Dunwell, Grant Hickman, Marcus Laing, Adam Emson and Andrew Porritt wrapped up an impressive 4th win from the last 5 matches.

With eight players missing for various reasons, Town were once again down to the bare-bones, although they were at least able to name two substitutes on this occasion, even if one was the injured Craig Winter.

Mulcaster was back in the dug-out himself after being absent for the defeat at Ryhope CW the previous Saturday, and he was able to welcome back Hickman, James Bowman and Adam Emson, while Anderson had made his peace with the club after the weekend shenanigans to take his place on the right wing.

But it was the hosts who were gifted a 26th minute lead. Only goalkeeper James Briggs will know why he inexplicably gave the ball directly to Hepplewhite 30 yards out, but it still needed some finishing and he did so in great style with a superb first-time chip.

However Town were deservedly level five minutes before the break. Anderson once again beat full-back David Short and his superb cross was headed home at the near post by Dunwell.

Hickman then put them in front eight minutes after the restart, rising above the Chester defence to power home a header from Gav Parkin's right-wing corner, and it was 3-1 five minutes later with a well crafted goal. Butterworth spread the ball wide to Hickman out on the right and his drilled centre was headed home by Laing - his third goal of the season.

Inevitably it was Emson who grabbed the fourth - his 33rd goal of the season -flicking home a cross by Pottitt from close range - while the two combined again for Porritt to fire home his first goal for the club from Emson's left-wing cross.

This evening, with Northallerton Town and Jarrow Roofing BCA just ninety minutes from a cup final we turn the clock back thirty seven years to April 1976 and a trophy winning afternoon at Roker Park.

Match of the Day

The first half of the 1970’s certainly had its highpoints for Sunderland, most notably, of course, the FA Cup Final victory over Leeds United in May 1973 and the European Cup Winners Cup campaign that followed. In the league, however, it hadbeen a frustrating time.

After 68 seasons of unbroken First Division football the Black Cats were relegated for the first time in their history in 1958. After six seasons in the second tier they returned to the top flight in 1964, but another six seasons later, in 1970, relegation again took them into Division Two. By the start of 1975-76 they were again embarking on a sixth season away from the top and, having seen Middlesbrough join Newcastle United in the First Division in 1974 they were desperate to end their exile.

It was fair to say that they entered the new campaign amongst the favourites, having been there or thereabouts for some time. After a disappointing thirteenth place finish in 1970-71, the next four seasons (in the days before the Play-Offs) had seen them finish fifth, sixth, sixth and fourth, missing promotion by just two points in both 1973-74 and 1974-75.

After the encouragement of a 2-0 away win against Newcastle in the preseason Anglo Scottish Cup campaign on 6 August 1975, it didn't take Sunderland too long to get into their stride. The first three matches of the league programme brought a win, a draw and a defeat but the Black Cats then embarked on a run of six wins in seven games, culminating in a 4-0 home win over Notts. County on 27 September which took them to the top of the table, a point clear of their visitors who had led the league going into the match.

October and November brought six wins and two draws in nine games and by the time Oldham Athletic were beaten 2-0 at Roker Park on 29 November Sunderland were four points clear of Bristol City at the top and, more importantly, seven points clear of fourth placed Bristol Rovers with three automatic promotion places up for grabs.

December, however, was a mixed month, with two home wins but three away defeats. On 6 December, the long trip to Southampton brought the good run to a shuddering halt with a 0-4 defeat and a 1-0 home win over Oxford United was followed, on the Saturday before Christmas, with a 0-1 defeat at Chelsea. The lead at the top had evaporated with Sunderland now ahead of Bolton Wanderers only on goal average. On Boxing Day, 35,210 blew away the Christmas cobwebs at Roker Park as Hull City were beaten 3-1, while Bolton lost at Oldham, giving Sunderland a

two point lead at the top of the league again as they headed across the Pennines the following day, Saturday 27 December, for a crucial promotion battle against the second placed side.

Nearly 43,000 crammed into Burnden Park and it was looking good for Sunderland when Dunne put through his own goal in the last minute of the first half to give them the half time lead. The second half belonged to Bolton, though. Future Sunderland player and Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce equalised on 51 minutes and Byrom gave the home side all three points on 70.

January brought three points out of four in the league for Sunderland, but the chasing teams were going well too. When two Viv Busby goals brought a 0-2 defeat at Fulham on 7 February Sunderland was down to third, two points behind Bolton and behind Bristol City on goal average. In the following league game, however, they bounced back, coming from behind to beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 at home to return to the top, with goals from Holden, Moncur, Robson and Towers.

Alongside the league campaign, the Black Cats were also going well in the FA Cup. Oldham and Hull had been beaten at Roker Park in Rounds Three and Four and the Fifth Round brought an impressive victory against First Division Stoke City. After a 0-0 draw in the Potteries on 14 February, Sunderland went through 2-1 in the replay. When the Quarter Final draw brought a home tie with Third Division Crystal Palace a second Cup Final in four seasons looked to be an increasing possibility.

The concern was that the distraction of the cup run might damage the promotion campaign, a fear that was borne out as Sunderland picked up just one point from four in the two matches before the Quarter Final, drawing 2-2 at Carlisle United and losing 0-2 at Luton Town. Once again, the Black Cats were down to third and worryingly, now level on points with fourth placed Notts. County.

Worries about the distraction of the cup run didn't last. Crystal Palace were a tougher prospect than their Third Division status suggested and followed up wins away to Leeds United and Chelsea in the previous two rounds by beating Sunderland 1-0 on 6 March. Sunderland could concentrate entirely on the promotion chase. Bobby Kerr scored twice at Orient on 13 March to bring a 2-0 win and some breathing space over Notts. County, who lost at Oxford. The Black Cats then stuttered again, losing 1-2 at Nottingham Forest and drawing 1-1 at Oldham and also at home to Bristol City, but this time the teams around them stuttered too and on the morning of 27 March Sunderland were second in the table, four points behind Bristol City with two games in hand, a point ahead of Bolton and two clear of West Brom. At just the right moment, they found their form.

Southampton were beaten 3-0 at Roker Park on 27 March with Greenwood scoring two, York City were beaten 1-0 three days later and a 0-0 draw at Notts. County was followed by a 3-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers on 10 April. 17 April was Easter Saturday and it proved to be a pivotal day. Sunderland turned on the style to win 4-1at Hull City in front of 21,296 and they were on the verge of promotion, four points ahead of fourth placed Bolton with three games to go and two points for a win, and with Bolton next up at Roker Park on Easter Monday. Win and promotion would be assured.

51,983 flocked to Roker Park (more than 48,000 more than the crowd at the York City v Blackpool game in the same division on the same day) and they were not to be disappointed. Sunderland took charge of the game in the first half with a Towers penalty and a second from Robson, and although Allardyce pulled one back after the break, the Black Cats were not to be denied. 2-1 and they were back in the top flight.

In a season with almost as much fixture congestion as Spennymoor Town are facing now, Sunderland had the chance to wrap up the title the very next day, but lost 0-1 at Blackpool, and so thirty seven years ago today when already relegated Portsmouth visited Wearside on the final Saturday of the 1975-76 season, it was all about clinching the title again.

The Black Cats were a point ahead of second placed Bristol City and knew that victory would give them the silverware, but anything less could open the door for City, who were at home to Notts. County. Meanwhile, Bolton and West Brom were left to battle for the third promotion place, with West Brom knowing that victory at Oldham would take them up, but anything less could let in Bolton, who were away to Charlton Athletic and then had one more game to play.

The crowd of 40,515 on a warm but overcast day at Roker Park were in celebratory mood, determined to celebrate the promotion that was already assured, but keen to finish in style and the mood was lightened further by the news that O'Brien had put Notts. County ahead against Bristol City after 15 minutes. Sunderland pressed for an opener and Robson had a good chance blocked on the edge of the area before winning the ball well on the half way line and playing a fine ball through to Holden who was foiled by the keeper. On 28 minutes, the breakthrough came in style.

Left back Joe Bolton took a short throw in to Billy Hughes deep in Portsmouth territory and when Hughes played it back to him he cut in from the left to drive the ball home from just inside the area. Holden almost added a second immediately, stepping inside a defender on the left of the area but having his low shot turned behind, but on 30 minutes Sunderland were in complete control. Another flowing move down the left saw the ball crossed to Hughes who headed home unopposed from the edge of the six yard box.

Towers almost added a third, arrowing a shot towards the corner which was turned away, but at 2-0 at half time and with Bristol City still losing it was going to take a monumental turn around for Sunderland to be denied the title. Meanwhile, the race for the third promotion spot was on a knife edge. West Brom was drawing 0-0 and Bolton was doing everything they could to put pressure on them, having taken the lead at Charlton seven minutes before the interval.

The second half was comfortable for Sunderland. Towers hit the post with a drive from 20 yards and Robson had a shot saved at close range. On 74 minutes news came through that Benjamin had added a second for Notts. County at Bristol City, and although Bristol City immediately pulled one back through Whitehead, that was as good as it got for the Robins. Sunderland saw out their 2-0 victory to take the Second Division championship.

Meanwhile, Bolton piled the pressure on West Brom with three more goals for a 4-0win at Charlton but it was to no avail. Tony Brown scored on 54 minutes to give West Brom a 1-0 win at Oldham and it was the Baggies who would join Sunderland and Bristol City in Division One.

Elsewhere

As Sunderland were clinching the Second Division title it was possible that the championship would be decided in the top flight too. QPR had been in the box seat going into Easter Saturday, but a 2-3 defeat at Norwich City had opened the door for Liverpool who had grabbed the opportunity with a 5-3 home win over Stoke City. On the morning of 24 April 1976, Liverpool, who were not in action as they prepared for the UEFA Cup Final, were a point clear of QPR, who were to play their final game at home to Leeds United. Manchester United was still in contention mathematically too, four points behind Liverpool but with two games left to play, the first of which was that afternoon at Leicester City. If QPR lost and Manchester United didn't win, Liverpool would be champions.

On a tense afternoon at Loftus Road, however, QPR kept the title race alive, beating Leeds 2-0 in front of 31,002. The win took QPR top and ended Manchester United's hopes, although United would have missed out anyway as they lost 1-2 at Leicester. QPR now had a long wait to see if they would be champions, until Liverpool played their final game at Wolverhampton Wanderers on 4 May. That game would be vital at both ends of the table with Wolves and Birmingham City, neither of whom played on 24 April, locked in a battle to avoid the third relegation spot. As it turned out, Liverpool won 3-1 at Wolves in that final game to take the title ahead of QPR and send Wolves down.

Elsewhere on 24 April 1976, Middlesbrough completed their season with a 1-2defeat at Aston Villa and finished thirteenth with 40 points. Deehan and Carrodus got the Villa goals with Hickton scoring for Boro in front of 33,241. Leeds' defeat at QPR saw them finish fifth on 51 points. Sheffield United, who didn't play on 24 April, and Burnley, who lost 1-3 at home to Coventry City were already relegated. Newcastle United finished the season well, winning 3-0 at Spurs with MacDonald scoring twice after Burns had got the opener, all in the second half. The Magpies finished 15th,three points and two places ahead of Arsenal, who completed their season with a 1-3 defeat at Manchester City (sorry Ricky). Meanwhile, there were goals aplenty at Portman Road, where Derby County beat Ipswich Town 6-2 in Francis Lee's final game before retirement.

Back in Division Two, while Sunderland were heading up, York City were heading down, already certain to be relegated. They completed their season with a 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea. Seal put York ahead after 27 minutes, Britton equalised from the penalty spot on 64 but when Cave put the Minstermen back in front on 68 minutes it looks as though they would sign off with a win. Alas, they were denied by a second equaliser, by Finnieston four minutes from time. Meanwhile, a 2-0 win for Carlisle United at home to Plymouth Argyle and a 1-2 defeat for Oxford United at Orient meant that Carlisle stayed up and Oxford went down (that last minute goal by goalkeeper Jimmy Glass in 1999 wasn't the only time Carlisle have beaten Plymouth Argyle on the final day to avoid relegation!).

In Division Three, Hereford United had already clinched the title, but the rest of the promotion race was still up in the air, with none of the leading clubs playing on 24 April. As it turned out, it was Cardiff City and Millwall who went up with Hereford. At the other end of the table, Aldershot won 3-1 at Halifax Town to climb out of the relegation zone above Sheffield Wednesday, who drew 1-1 at Brighton. Wednesday went on to win their game in hand 2-1 at home to Southend United the following Thursday, though, to avoid the drop and send Aldershot down with Southend, Halifax and Colchester United. Swindon Town beat Walsall 5-1 thirty seven years ago today with Trevor Anderson scoring a hat trick of penalties, the first player to achieve that feat since Ken Barnes did so for Manchester City against Everton in 1957.

In Division Four, Darlington beat Bournemouth 2-0 at Feethams but was fourth bottom with one game left to play. They duly drew 1-1 at home to Swansea City in that final game to avoid a re-election vote by the skin of their teeth, with Stockport County, Newport County, Southport and Workington the bottom four. Hartlepool United won 1-0 at home to Brentford thirty seven years ago today in their final game of the season, finishing fourteenth. Lincoln City was the champions, with Northampton Town, Reading and Tranmere Rovers promoted alongside them.

In Scotland, Rangers clinched the title with a 1-0 win at Dundee United and it was a big day of international football too, with the first legs of the European Championship Quarter Finals. In one of the biggest games in their history Wales lost 0-2 in Yugoslavia, World Cup holders West Germany drew 1-1 in Spain andCzechoslovakia, who had eliminated England in the group stage, beat the Soviet Union 2-0.

As Sunderland were lifting the Second Division title there was success at Wembley for North Yorkshire, as Scarborough beat Stafford Rangers 3-2 to lift the FA Trophy.

The newspaper headlines on the morning of 24 April 1976 mainly related to the ongoing economic problems of the mid 1970s.

TUC General Secretary Len Murray reported on his negotiations with Chancellor Denis Healey over a proposed cap on pay rises while left wing Labour MPs were expressing concern at a proposed bank minimum lending rate and its possible effect on jobs. The interest proposals did not stop the ongoing slide in the value of the Pound against the American Dollar.

US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger set off on a trip to Africa hoping to prevent a war to achieve black majority rule in Rhodesia and also to curb growing Soviet and Cuban influence in the continent. In France, police clashed with students protesting against university reforms in Paris and there was ongoing fighting in Beirut.

Meanwhile, British Leyland and Datsun both announced price increases. A Mini 850 was to cost £1427, an Allegro 1100 £1768, a Rover 2200SC £3580 and a Jaguar XJ6 3.4 £5839 while amongst Datsun models a Cherry 2-door L would cost £1495 and a Sunny 4-door saloon £1829.

While there was trophy success for Wearside at Roker Park and North Yorkshire at Wembley, Tyneside was celebrating at Twickenham as Gosforth beat Rosslyn Park 23-14 to lift rugby's John Player Cup. Meanwhile, at the Wythenshaw Arena in Manchester Alex Higgins was taking on Ray Reardon in the final of the Embassy World Professional Snooker Championship. Reardon ran out winner by 27 frames to 16 in a tournament which had been split between Manchester and Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Children's TV on BBC1 thirty seven years ago today included Champion the Wonder Horse, Zorro and Little House on the Prairie, while ITV had The Big Booming Bicycle Show and Tell Me Why.

Grandstand on BBC1 in the afternoon featured the snooker, racing from Leicester, boxing, swimming, motocross and rugby league sevens, while World of Sport on ITV had motor cycling, racing from Thirsk and Sandown, wrestling and a pub sports quiz!

BBC1's evening line up included Dad's Army, Dixon of Dock Green, the rather questionable Black and White Minstrel Show, the film QB V11 and Saturday Night at the Mill, together with Match of the Day, which featured Leicester City v Manchester United and Oldham Athletic v West Bromwich Albion. The evening entertainment on ITV included Meet Peters and Lee, New Faces, Sale of the Century, two films (One Foot in Hell and Nightmare for a Nightingale) and Police Story.

Rugby Special on BBC2 featured the Gosforth v Rosslyn Park cup final and on Sunday afternoon Shoot! on Tyne Tees featured Sunderland v Portsmouth while Yorkshire TV showed Huddersfield Town 1 Watford 0.

In the cinemas, films on release included Jaws, And Then There Were None, The Hindenburg and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest while in the UK music singles chart The Bay City Rollers were at eight with Love Me Like I Love You, Sailor were at seven with Girls Girls Girls, 10CC were at six with I'm Mandy Fly Me, Diana Ross was at five with The Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To), Hank Mizell was at four with Jungle Rock, John Miles was at three with Music (obviously), ABBA were at two with Fernando (in honour of Fernando Torres who would be born eighteen years later) and the UK number one was Brotherhood of Man with Save Your Kisses For Me.

TOWN'S late bid for a promotion gathered momentum as a magnificent hat-trick from Mickey Dunwell and a strike from Col Anderson made it a happy return to Horden for Peter Mulcaster a week last Wednesday.

"Tonight we were made to work hard for our win," said ex-Horden boss Mulcaster at the whistle. "But in the end our quality showed through with a great treble by Mickey and another good goal from Col.

"It's difficult to explain why sometimes against lower sides you don't play as well as you can, but football is all about results and our last two games have been wins with 9 goals scored and only 2 conceded, a great return for all the efforts of the players."

Horden were forced into an early change when left-back Josh Andrews had to be replaced by Stephen Hookaday but they twice came close to grabbing the lead through the dangerous Darren Atkinson, who recently stepped down from the role of player-manager.

However, it was Mulcaster's side that did make the breakthrough midway through the first half. Emson was twice denied by Horden goalkeeper Grant McIver but when Bowman returned the ball to the danger zone, Dunwell was on hand to finish from close range

The second half saw Town start with more tempo to their play and they doubled their advantage seven minutes after the resumption. Again the impressive Bowman created the opportunity with a lovely cross-field ball to Anderson, who cut inside before drilling a shot under the body of McIver, who may have felt he should have saved it.

However, Horden were thrown a lifeline five minutes later. Tricky winger James Murphy walzted into the area before going down under a clumsy challenge from Butterworth and Atkinson smashed the penalty past Hudson.

But Town weathered the storm and sealed the points with a third goal in the 63rd minute. Anderson did well down the right before the ball broke to Emson and his cross found Dunwell at the far post. The former Hartlepool striker showed instant control before finding the top left-hand corner of the net from 10 yards.

And it was 4-1, two minutes later. Andrew Porritt, again impressive at right back, whipped in a cross to the far post and Dunwell completed his hat-trick with a first time effort that McIver could only push into the far corner of the net.

History of Northallerton Town

Nobody knows the exact formation date of Northallerton Town Football Club, but The Elliott Bowl, a trophy donated by local M.P. Sir George Elliott, was contested for the first time in 1895 carries the clubs name as its first winner.

Known variously as Northallerton, Northallerton Alliance and Northallerton Town, the club played for many years on The Bluestone Ground behind County Hall. Many honours were won during this period including The Harrogate and District League Championship, The Richmond Cup, Bedale Cup, Milbank Cup, Orde-Powlett Cup, Dales Cup, Harrogate Invitation Cup and The Alverton Trophy.

The Club was forced to leave its Bluestone Ground in 1974 when North Yorkshire County Council put a compulsory purchase order on the ground in order to extend County Hall. (The extensions never took place and the Bluestone Ground still remains a football ground to this day.) The N.Y.C.C re-housed the club on its present Ainderby Road Ground (re-named the Regency Stadium in 2006) where two pitches, a clubhouse, changing rooms and car park were officially opened on August 21st.1976.

Northallerton continued to play in the Harrogate and District League until the end of the 1981-82 season when, with chairman Stan Kirkbride and manager Neil Milestone at the helm, they successfully applied to become founder members of new the Northern League Second Division in 1982. Sadly Mr Kirkbride passed away during that first season of Northern League football and was replaced by Vice-chairman Ron Longstaff.

Joining the Northern League was a big step for the club as something like £150,000 had to be raised to upgrade the Ainderby Road Ground to Northern League standards. The Club’s first game in the Northern League was on August 28th 1982 when they were defeated 4-1 at Ryhope. A week later, Town gained revenge with a 2-0 home victory when Ryhope became the first Northern League visitors to Ainderby Road.

Early years in the Northern League were difficult but they reached the final of the North Riding County Cup in the 1983-84 season, unfortunately losing 2-1 to York Railway Institute. The appointment of former Burnley, Leeds United and Middlesbrough star Ray Hankin as manager in March 1989 saw an upturn in the club’s fortunes.

Hankin guided them to promotion to the First Division in 1989-90 having finished runners-up in the Second Division behind champions Murton. Season 1990-91 saw the club consolidate itself in Division One, but at the end of that season Hankin resigned and his number two Geoff Cane was appointed manager.

Under Cane, the Club enjoyed great success in both the F.A Trophy and the F.A Cup - reaching the last sixteen in the F.A Trophy in 1992-93 before going out to Farnborough of the Vauxhall Conference - and in the same season they reached the fourth qualifying round of the F.A Cup before narrowly losing at Accrington Stanley.

Major ground redevelopment was carried out while Cane was in charge - a new grandstand with seating for 150 spectators was erected together with covered terracing for a further 400 spectators. The open ends behind both goals were also terraced, making the Ainderby Road ground the envy of many. The Club will always be grateful to Geoff as without him most of this work would not have been completed. Unfortunately, off the field disagreements were taking place which resulted in Cane leaving the club at the end of the 1992-93 season. Sadly Geoff passed away in 1995, aged 46.

Town were now a force to be reckoned with in the Northern League and they won the League Challenge Cup in 1993-94, when they beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 in the final at Brandon. But this was to be the last game that Northallerton Town Football Club was to play.

Disaster struck during the summer of 1994 when they were declared financially insolvent in the High Court and were ordered to close down. Had this happened during the playing season then there is not much doubt that the club would have folded. Fortunately there was still time before the new season started for a local businessman to come forward and rescue the club, this despite vandals breaking into the ground and daubing slogans on the stand walls and breaking all the windows in the clubhouse.

A new committee was formed and the club was able to kick off the 1994-95 season under the new name of Northallerton F.C. 1994. Still in the First Division of the Northern League, the opening game was Northallerton, League Cup winners, against Durham City, League Champions, in the annual Cleator Cup. After playing a 1-1 draw after extra time, Durham won the cup on penalties.

With no money available to reimburse players there was a mass exodus, and many players from local football leagues were brought in. Although these players gave their all it was no surprise when they were relegated at the end of season 1994-95. During season 1995-96, the Club gradually got back on its feet, but after a poor opening the Committee decided that players could once again be reimbursed and many of the club’s former players returned resulting in the Club finishing in a respectable 5th place in the league.

During the summer of 1996 the Club was allowed to reinstate the name “Town” to once again become Northallerton Town Football Club (1994), and under the joint guidance of the management duo of Mickey Sell and John Woods, they won promotion back to the First Division when they won the Second Division Championship. For personal reasons both Sell and Woods resigned as joint managers at the end of 1996-97, although both remained at the club, Woods as assistant manager and Sell as an occasional player.

After making a disastrous start to life back in the First Division (winning just three points from the first twelve games) the Club appointed former Bristol Rovers, Middlesbrough, Carlisle United and Darlington star Archie Stephens as theirmanager. But they fared no better, and, after finishing second bottom, they were relegated back to the Second Division. Stephens, and his assistant Woods, left the club by mutual consent at the end of the season.

Peter Mulcaster was appointed manager at the start of the 1998-99 season, and heguided the club to a commendable fourth place in the league. But in the February of his second season (1999-00), with the club lying in third place and one of the favourites for promotion, he surprised the club with his shock resignation in order to take the vacant manager’s job at Spennymoor United.

He was replaced as manager by the experienced ex-Guisborough Town boss Micky Hodgson, but after failing to win promotion at the first attempt, Hodgson and his assistant Peter Bell left the club at the end of season 2000-01.

Peter Mulcaster returned to take over for his second spell as team manager at the start of the 2001-02 season, but after two seasons in charge and failing to get the team promoted, it was mutually agreed that he should leave the club at the end of season 2002-03.

The very experienced former Whitby Town captain Paul Burton was appointed manager at the start of the 2003-04 season. Under Burton, Town regained First Division status when they finished runners-up in Division Two at the end of the 2005-06 season, where they also reached the final of the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time in their history - losing 3-1 to York City at Bootham Crescent.

The following season (2006-07) they again reached the Senior Cup final - losing 5-0to a strong Middlesbrough side at Billingham Synthonia. Burton surprised the club at the end of the season by handing in his resignation for what he claims were personal reasons.

He was replaced by the vastly experienced Andy Toman, who lives in the Town, but he resigned after just the one season.

Toman was replaced by Alan Robinson, but on the eve of the season Robinson shocked the club with his resignation as he was going to start a new life in Thailand.

Ex-Doncaster Rovers player Martin Speight and former Norton & Stockton Ancients manager Stuart Dawson - who were to have been Robinson’s assistants - were appointed as joint managers, but following a run of poor results, Dawson left the club in early January. Speight was then appointed sole manager but results failed to improve and, following the heavy 5-1 home defeat by Ashington at the end of March, he also resigned.

Mark Fanning, who had been part of the coaching staff at Darlington FC, was appointed and he is now in his fourth season as manager. Last season, Fanning guided the club to their first silverware in 18 years when they came from behind to beat Second Division champions Team Northumbria 3-2 in the final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup.

TOWN'S hopes of sneaking into the promotion back door suffered a potentially fatal blow on Saturday as a well organised West Allotment Celtic left the RGPS with all three points.

"It was not such a good performance today," said a disappointed Mulcaster. "We were slow to get started, never got to grips with the game and hardly looked like we were going to get a goal.

"I don't know if the amount of games is catching up with us but we certainly did not have our usual spark."

It was the visitors who made the better start as they scored what proved to be the only goal of the game in the 5th minute. A ball played in from the left from Liam Hudson was not cleared by a static Town defence and the ball fell kindly to the feet of Lee who had the simple chance of beating Town goalkeeper James Briggs from close range.

Mulcaster's side looked for an instant response and they were close to an equaliser four minutes later. Adam Emson has been linking well with strike-partner Michael Dunwell in recent weeks and the two almost combined again as Emson's cross from the left was met by Dunwell, but he fired over the top from 10 yards.

Celtic were soon back on top as a 30-yard drive from player-manager Paul Stoneman in the 25thminute went just wide of Briggs right hand post, while Town’s best effort in what had been a disappointing first half came in the 34thminute.

A pull-back from the right bye-line by Col Anderson found Butterworth but from a good position just to the left of goal, he fired high over the bar.

The second half followed a similar pattern and the nearest Town came to saving a point was a 25-yard free kick from Dunwell which was charged down by the Celtic defence fifteen minutes from time.

The loose ball fell to substitute Ian Smurthwaite who was in the clear in front of goal, but he produced a weak shot straight at goalkeeper Lee Wall.Celtic regained the upper hand and they went close to adding a second in the 81stminute when a shot from a tight angle by Lee was beaten away by Briggs, who was relieved to see the rebound bounce off the winger and behind for a goal-kick.

IAN SMURTHWAITE – Age 21 (Centre Midfield / Centre Half) – Tough tackling midfielder is now in his fourth season at the club. ‘Smurf’ returned to

Northallerton last October, after a short break in the USA. He had previously been at Darlington FC.

STEPHEN BUTTERWORTH – Age 22 (Centre Midfield) –Following a coaching stint in USA, Stephen is now in his second season with the club.

Previous clubs include Darlington FC and York St John’s.
