Editor’s Note – Wow—It’s Hot! As we all enjoy the sun and fun of summer, things at OFRA are heating up! The Harvest Fest Draw ticket sales are well underway and excitement is building up for this year’s Harvest Fest event—check out the Foundation Fundraising article for the details! Paul Belair updates us on upgrades at OFRA and New MKK status! Heidi Schell shares details about an award involv-ing Uusi Koti and SalDan. The Ladies Auxiliary gives us an overview of upcoming 2018 events as they continue to work hard and support various parts of OFRA. The Therapeutic Recreation and Activity team share their spring/summer activities—thank you to all that participat-ed in all of these great events! Juhannus was wonderful! The Ontario Finnish Resthome Association and Foundation will be hosting our

3rd Annual Harvest Fest Draw and Event. This year we have some outstanding

community sponsors. Without them this event wouldn’t be the success that it

is today. Thank you to Leisure Living, SalDan Construction, Northern Su-

perior Brewing Co., Sault Chiropody Clinic, and SK Group!

With great anticipation, the planning of the Harvest Fest Event is well under-

way! This fun-filled event at the Machine Shop, catered by The Mill Steak-

house, will include our marketplace, a penny raffle, silent auction, a 50/50 cash

lottery and the always entertaining live auction, led by Vernon Baily and his

wild and unpredictable but hilarious assistant Vanha Vhite. The winning tickets

for Harvest Fest Draw will be drawn at 9:30 pm! The party continues with a

live performance by Hwy 638! All proceeds from the Harvest Fest event

(excluding lottery) will go towards New MKK.

Harvest Fest Event Tickets are now on sale for $50 a person or $450 for a table

During the weeks before the event we sold 50/50 tickets for the Wheels and Deals 50/50 draw. With the help of our volunteers who were selling alongside our Harvest Fest Draw, the 50/50 draw winner went home with an astounding $1,200 – congratulations Jamie Crack – he was also one of the Car Show participants! Thank you to all of our volunteers that helped us the day of event – over $2,400 was raised to help fund the Courtyard project!

Our 6th Annual 50/50 cash lottery draw is back

Tickets Available Late September 2018! Over the last 5 years we have raised over $20,000 through this lottery!! As we mentioned in our last issue, our Lottery proceeds from our various draws including our Bi-weekly 50/50 cash lottery have been used to purchase many items for our residents including exer-cise equipment, wheelchairs, mattresses, fall prevention de-vices and much, much more. This year all lottery proceeds will go towards the purchase of a New Wheelchair Accessible OFRA Resident Bus!!! As before, the draw will be help bi-weekly at 2pm in the Kestitupa at 721 North St. Tickets are still $5 each or $75 for the year.

News from the CEO’s Desk:

Summer is upon us, and with it another informative issue of Around the Pond. This sea-son’s activity kicked off as it does every year, with the Juhannus 2018 celebration, which took place on June 22nd. The weather that day was absolutely perfect, and the event was filled to capacity with smiling, happy faces from tenants and residents from across the en-tire campus. Also in attendance were the family and friends of those who call OFRA home, all of which went into making Juhannus once again a resounding success! My sincere thanks to Heidi Slotegraaf and her team for their work in organizing the event, and to all other staff that had a hand in the set up/tear down, and portering/care of residents during the event. Special thanks to the many volunteers that supported the event in too many ways to count… it would not have been possible without them.

Now that Juhannus is in the past, work has begun on two much-needed projects over this summer. In the last issue of Around the Pond, I mentioned the MKK Courtyard Project and the Kotitalo Sprinkler installation. Both of these projects have been started, and both are expected to wrap up in the Fall. OFRA extends its apologies to any and all residents for any inconveniences caused by these projects, but I am hopeful all will recognize the value of completing them. This is truly a “short-term pain for long-term gain scenario”! In previous articles of Around the Pond, I have mentioned trends in demographics that are affecting OFRA, Sault Ste. Marie, and indeed all of Northern Ontario. It is so important to us all, that I believe it bears repeating. It is predicted that by 2036, 30% of residents in Northeastern Ontario will be aged 65 and older. Although today’s seniors are living longer and are in better health than previous generations, we can still expect the need for services to support seniors will grow. In the Sault/Algoma area, the trends are no less true. Locally, based on the growth rate of this demographic, we can conservatively expect the demand for Assisted Living and Long Term Care services to double over the next two dec-ades as the proportion of seniors in this area reaches approximately 30%. In light of these trends, OFRA needs to continue to position itself to meet a growing demand. As a result, OFRA has applied to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) to build a new MKK. Currently, MKK is a 60-bed home, with three additional interim beds. Over the winter, MOHLTC granted OFRA one additional bed, and approval to convert the three interim beds to permanent beds, thereby increasing MKK’s total permanent bed count to 64. More recently, OFRA was approved for 64 more beds, bringing the new grand total of beds in the new MKK to 128. All of this is, of course, dependent on getting the required approval to build the new facility. I continue to fol-low up with MOHLTC to ensure that this final layer of approval is expedited as quickly as possible. Once the new MKK is built and the residents moved in (we expect that to take approximately 18-20 months), the for-mer MKK will be renovated and converted into additional space for OFRA’s Kotitalo operation. That will mean an ap-proximate 25-30% growth for Kotitalo. Obviously this all means a much larger, more complex organization. Our chal-lenge in getting ready for this is evaluating the current systems, processes, communications, and tools in order to make decisions about what works now, what doesn’t, and how we can prepare for the coming growth. The location of the new building, if approved, will be where the MKK staff parking lot is currently (near the rear en-trance to the current MKK). The latest blueprints feature all private or semi-private rooms, and there will be 32 beds per unit, and 4 units. The design of the building currently has 1 unit per floor, however this may be subject to change with the additional beds. We remain confident the required MOHLTC approval is forthcoming, and look forward to beginning the planning and implementation of this project, which must be fully operational by December 2022.

On a final note, I would like to introduce Around the Pond’s readership to a new member of the Uusi Koti fami-ly. Over the spring, OFRA’s long-time dental hygiene contractor Sophie Freeman has expanded her operation into the Uusi Koti building. Her dental hygiene clinic is conveniently located just off the lobby, and her services are available to all OFRA residents, staff, and life-members. jestämiseen, sekä asukkaittemme avustamiseen juhlapaikalle pääsyssä,sekä heidän mukavuudestaan huolehtimiseen.

Kiitos myös vapaaehtoisille, tämäkään juhla ei olisi ollut mahdollista ilman heidän apuaan!

Juhannus on mennyt ja työt aloitettu kahden tarpeellisen projektin parissa. Viime numerossa mainitsin MKK sisäpihan

kunnostusprojektista , sekä Kotitalon uuden palotorjuntajärjestelmän asentamisesta. Molemmat projektit on nyt alo-

itettu ja toivomme niiden valmistuvan syksyllä. Pahoittelemme näistä projekteista asukkaille mahdollisesti aiheutuvaa

haittaa. Olen kuitenkin toiveikas , että kaikki ymmärrämme tästä koituvan hyödyn . "Ilma vaivannäköä emme saavuta

hyötyä".

Aikaisemmassa numerossa olen maininnut ikääntyvistä väestönmuutoksesta alueellamme. Tämä ennuste koskee ko-

ko pohjois Ontariota ja sillä tulee olemaan vaikutusta kaupunkimme ja näinollen OFRA'n tulevaisuuteen.

Tämänhetkinen ennuste on , että vuoteen 2036 mennessä 30% pohjois Ontarion väkiluvusta tulee olemaan 65 vuo-

tiaita ja vanhempia. Tänä päivänä seniorit elävät pidempään ja terveempinä kuin aikaisemmat sukupolvet , mutta siitä

huolimatta palvelujen ja hoidon tarve tulee lisääntymään.

Sama suuntaus on nähtävissä Soon ja Algoman alueella . Paikallisesti oletamme pitkäaikaishoitopaikkojen ja seniori-

asuntojen tarpeen lisääntyvän tuplasti seuraavan kahdenkymmenen vuoden aikana, seniorien määrän kasvaessa

n.30% väkiluvustamme.

Tästä suuntauksesta johtuen OFRA'n on tärkeä valmistautua tuleviin haasteisiin. Näinollen OFRA on laittanut

anomuksen MOHLTC'lle uutta MKK varten. Tällä hetkellä MKK on 60 vuoteen,+3 väliaikaispaikan, pitkäaikaishoidon

vuodeosasto. Talven aikana MOHOLTC myönsi OFRA'lle yhden pitkäaikais vuodepaikan lisää sekä 3 vakituista

pitkäaikaishoitopaikkaa, joten vuode määrämme on nyt 64 vakituista pitkäaikais hoitopaikkaa. Hiljattain OFRA'lle

myönnettiin lupa 64 uuteen vuodepaikkaan vanhojen lisäksi, joka nostaa koko MKK hoitopaikkojen määrän 128. Kaikki

tämä, riippuu tietenkin siitä , että anomuksemme uutta rakennusta varten hyväksytään. Olen jatkuvassa yhteydessä

MOHLTC kanssa, haluan varmistaa, että saamme päätöksen nopeasti.

Uuden MKK valmistuttua ja asukkaiden muutettua uusiin tiloihin ( oletamme tähän menevän n. 18-20 kuukautta),

vanha MKK kunnostetaan ja siitä tulee lisätiloja Kotitalon toimintaan. Tästä tulee koitumaan 20-30% kasvua Kotitalolle.

Tämä tarkoittaa myös suurempaa ja moninaisempaa organisaatiota. Haasteenamme on tällä hetkellä arvioida nykyiset

toimintamme , prosessit, kommunikaatiointi sekä välineet niin , että pystymme tekemään tarpeelliset päätökset siitä,

mikä toimii ja mihin kaipaamme muutoksia siirtyessämme eteenpäin.

Uusi rakennus, jos saamme hyväksynnän, tulee sijaitsemaan tämänhetkisen MKK henkilökunnan parkkipaikalla.

Uudessa rakennuksessa tulee olemaan yksityishuoneita, sekä "semiprivate" huoneita. Osastoilla tulee olemaan 32 hu-

onetta ja osastoja tulee olemaan 4. Tämänhetkisiin suunnitelmiin voi mahdollisesti tulla muutoksia. Uskomme saa-

vamme MOHLTC'n hyväksynnän tälle projektille ja toivomme, että voimme aloittaa tämän projektin suunnitelmien

viimeistelemisen sekä varsinaisen rakentamisen mahdollisimman pian. Tavoitteemme on olla toiminnallinen

joulukuuhun 2022 mennessä.

Vielä viimeisenä asiana haluan esitellä lukijoillemme uuden jäsenen joukossamme. Kevään aikaan hammashoitaja So-

phie Freemanin, on laajentanut toimintaansa Uudelle Kodille. Hänen klinikassa toimii sisääntuloaulan vieressä. Hänen

palvelunsa ovat tarjolla kaikille asukkaillemme, henkilökunnalle sekä jäsenillemme. Mainoksesta, joka on tässä nu-

merossa, saat lisätietoja.

First Place Award goes to SALDAN Construction and The Ontario Finnish Resthome for the

building of Uusi Koti~ a new senior’s apartment complex.

Uusi Koti has been named “best of the best” in North America in the multifamily division and it’s

the first ICF high rise in our city of Sault Ste Marie. Thank you to Sam Biasucci of SALDAN Gen-

eral Contractors for making this happen.

ICF is an acronym for “insulated concrete forms” producing benefits such as improved air quality,

30-50% energy savings, noise reduction, fire safety, resistance to high winds and storms making it

virtually indestructible.

It was a beautiful day for celebrations as Sam and Anna presented the award to OFRA, which

they had the honor of receiving at the World of Concrete Trade Show in Las Vegas back in Janu-

ary. In presenting the award in Las Vegas, judges cited the complexity of the design, the striking

architecture and the challenges the construction team overcame. This was a huge accomplish-

ment to achieve in 51 weeks while setting a new standard for the entire ICF industry.

The celebration had roughly 100 people in attendance followed by a lovely luncheon catered by

Kina’s Catering.

Thank you SALDAN for putting OFRA and Uusi Koti on the radar as “best of the best” and con-

Senioreille tarkoitetun kerrostalon, Uusi Koti. Uusi Koti on nimetty " parhaista parhaimmaksi" Pohjois Amerikassa ja on ensimmäinen ICF kerrostalo kaupungissamme. Kiitos Sam Blasussille Salada General Contractors 'sta hänen työstään. ICF on akronyymi "insulated concrete forms'lle" jonka hyötynä on parantunut ilmanlaatu, 30-50% energia säästö, kohentunut äänieriste, paloturvallisuuden lisääntyminen , sekä erittäin hyvä tuulen ja myrskyn vastustuskyky ja näin ollen on periaatteessa tuhoutumaton. Juhlimme voittoa kauniissa säässä Annan ja Samin lahjoittaessa voiitoplakaatin OFRA'lle . Heille se oli ojennettu Las Vegasissa World Concrete Trade Show'ssa , joka pidettiin tam-mikuussa. Lahjoittaessaan palkinnon tuomarit huomioivat rakennuksen moninaisuuden , näyttävän arkkitehtuurin sekä rakennusurakoitsijan haasteet projektin aikana. Tämä projekti oli mittava ja valmistui uskomattoman nopeasti 51 viikossa. Tämä on uusi standardi koko ICF teollisuudelle. Juhlaan osallistui n. 100 henkilöä ja lounaasta huolehti pitopalvelu Kina's Catering. Tahdomme vielä kiittää SAL-DAN'ia heidän tuomastaan huomiosta OFRA'lle ja Uudelle Kodille. Thank you to all the donors and to all the volunteers. You are all needed. The weather was beautiful and sunny for our Annual Juhannusjuhla. It was nice to see so many new people join us in the celebrations. During July the Flea Market and Clothing Store will be closed. We will reopen again in August and the hours of operation will be the same as before. Wednesdays at 10am -2pm. You will find inexpensive and good quality items in our shops. We do accept donations.

The Annual Casserole Dinner will be September 26th, at 5pm. Please come and join us!

The Kestitupa Coffee Hour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 1pm-2.30pm, is a nice way to enjoy the company of old friends over a cup of hot coffee. Come and visit with us , we look forward to seeing our old and new friends. Remember that with our work we take care of the needs of MKK.

Vihdoin meillä on ihana kuuma kesä, mutta muistattehan olla nurisematta tästä kuumuud-esta. Kevät meni nopeasti. Naisjaosto järjesti erittäin antoisat kevätmyyjäiset joiden tulos oli hyvä. Tuhannet kiitokset kaikille lahjoittajille sekä vapaaehtoistyöläisille. Teitä kaikkia tarvitaan. Juhannusjuhlaa vietimme tänä vuonna kauniissa auringonpaisteisessa säässä. Olemme iloisia, että mukana oli paljon uusia juhlioita. Heinäkuun ajan naisjaoston "Muotiaitta" ja "Aarrekauppa" ovat suljettuina. Elokuussa toimim-

me vanhan aikataulun mukaisesti, olemme auki joka keskiviikko klo. 10-14. Tervetuloa ostoksille, löydätte varmasti hyvää ja edullista tavaraa. Otamme ilomielin lahjoituksia vastaan. Muistathan syyskuun 26pvä, klo 17.00, laatikkopäivällisen. Tervetuloa nauttiman hyvistä antimista. Kestituvalla on kahvi kuumana maanantaisin, keskiviikkoisin ja perjantaisin, iltapäivällä klo 13.00-14.30. On mukava juoda kuppi kahvia tuttujen kesken sekä mahdollisesti tutustua uusiin ystäviin. Tulkaa joukolla mukaan rupattelemaan. Muistattehan, että työllämme huolehdimme MKK:n tarpeista. Toivotan naisjaoston puolesta kaikille hyvää kesää! Raija Ritokoski

Entomica was here again also in April.

Thank you to Science North and John De-

des, and his volunteer crew!! Vappu, the Mother’s Day Party, and a performance by

“Following Sea” kept the residents busy in May. The Father’s Day Party and a new

learning display, “Northern Nature Trad-

ing” were all held mid-June. This display, brought to us by “The Bushplane Museum” was very interesting and educational – a lot

of us could not believe all of the items, espe-cially the fluorescent rocks, shells, and

stones!! Our Canada Day Party was at the end of the month and the turnout was amazing!

Sience North ja John Dedes, sekä hänen vapaaehtois-joukkonsa. Vappu, Äitienpäiväjuhla ja "Following Sea" oli ohjelmassa asukkaittemme viihteeksi toukokuussa. Isän-

päivä ja uusi Bush Plane Museon näyttely, "Northern Na-ture Trading", olivat ohjelmassa kesäkuussa. Näyttely oli hyvin mielenkiintoinen. Ihmeteltävänämme oli

monenenlaisia luontokappaleita. Canada Day juhlamme oli kuun lopussa ja osallistujia oli suuri joukko.

JUHANNUS! Again, we could not have asked for a better day! Thank you, thank you,

thank you to all the volunteers – from the morning decorators, the ticket sellers, BBQ

helpers, entertainers, costume wearers, and booth operators, etc., etc., etc. - I CANNOT DO IT ALL, WITHOUT YOUR HELP! A big thank

you again to all staff, in all departments, who helped that day – if ever there is a time where we ALL come together for the residents, this is

the event! Thank you to all of the Environmen-tal Services crew who worked many days be-

forehand on the courtyard, in order to get it ready!

And, as always if you, your children/teens, or grandchildren, are available to do any volunteering, we are accepting applications. Forms can be picked up from the MKK or KOT TR / Activity staff, at the MKK/KOT front desk, or from myself – my office is beside the KOT Chapel. Individuals 18 and over must provide a negative police check prior to an in-terview – forms to complete this are with the volun-teer packet! “VOLUNTEERS ARE PRICELESS!”

Fundraising for New MKK! As always, the Ontario Finnish Resthome Foun-

dation, Ladies Auxiliary and OFRA are blessed

and grateful for generous support of our resi-

dents, staff, volunteers, both OFRA and Founda-

tion board members and the Sault and area

community and businesses. As we begin to gear

up for New MKK Campaign, the Foundation and

Ladies Auxiliary

will be reaching out to you again to help fundraise to provide a 128-bed

long-term care residence (New MKK) for our seniors. If you want to

hold an event to support us, donate or volunteer, contact us – we are all

in this together and every dollar counts!

Haluamme jälleen mainita kiitollisuutemme kaikkia tukijoukkojamme, vapaaehtoisiamme, kan-

nattajiamme, henkilökuntaamme ja työntekijöitämme kohtaan. Aloittaessamme kampanjoinnin

uutta MKK varten, säätiö ja naisjaosto tulevat edelleen luottamaan tukeesi. Kampanjan kohteemme on 128 paikkainen uusi vuodeosasto pitkäaikaishoitoa (New MKK) tarvitseville. Jos haluat tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä, tehdä lah-joituksen tai järjestää hyväntekeväisyystapahtuman tukeaksesi meitä, ole hyvä ja ota meihin yhteyttä. Yhdessä voimme saada paljon hyvää aikaan!
