Year 1 Through Year 6 is the Time to Start
1. There is nothing they really can’t learn
2. By Year 1 they already have experienced money in
some form
3. They already want stuff (and let you know about it!)
4. Spending habits start early and they reflect their
parents by watching
5. Influenced spending (What we purchase our kids at
their urging)
6. Advertisers and marketers target children as early as 18
months old
7. Never under estimate the credit card companies!

Art Smarts An early interest in and recognition of money can help children
develop a stronger economic sense
• Look at the images on the fronts and backs of coins and bills.
Discuss the meaning behind these images
• Draw a big circle and have your child create a picture hed like
to see on a coin or bill
• Let your child explore coins by making rubbings place a piece
of paper over a coin and rub
across the raised images
with the side of a crayon

• To a young child, bigger = better
• Learn the value of coins takes some practice since
the actual physical size of the money does not
necessarily correlate to value

how long it might take (Visual saving with change)
