Quarter One - 2017

From the Editor It’s always interesting starting something new, and this compi-lation of articles, devotions, poems, and works from students of New Life Christian School is no different. The students involved in the College Writing class this year have a unique opportunity to begin a tradition that is not only fun and interesting, it is something that will instill and develop skills that will be invaluable throughout the rest of their high school careers and beyond. Writing, words, communication, these ele-ments of life are perhaps one of the most important skills we can de-velop. Throughout history, great men and women have discussed the value of words and communication. Nations have been lifted and been vanquished with the words of a leader. Fortunes, careers, celebrity sta-tus, fame, and infamy have all found their root in words – both written and verbal. Our goals for “THEPaper” are not quite so lofty as the cre-ation of an empire or the building of a fortune, but our goals are im-portant nonetheless. Learning to communicate clearly through practice, fine-tuning our writing to a high level, and learning what it takes to commit to a project and see it through to its finish are worthwhile prac-tices and comprise just a small piece of our efforts on THEPaper. We’ve intentionally selected a variety of items to include in our in-augural issue. From a comic to current events, from devotions to album reviews, you will find some of our passions, hobbies, and interests in-cluded within the next few pages. We sincerely hope you enjoy them and we’ll look forward to providing you with another volume of our work in just a few months! Thanks for reading! Michael

Pathwayspoem

We walk, we talk, and every day we growPerhaps our visions appear slow

Do we truly know where we are meant to go?Our marvelous surroundings, taken for granted

We forget where our feet are planted

Some go after the crowd to followLaughter, Difference, and Embarrassment, they are afraid to

swallowOthers will order them around and have them retrieve

Their own thoughts, own ways, own actions they do not believe

While those that create their own way are meant to leadThey make their own decisions and destinies, are not filled

with greedThey do all at the top of their peak

So, tell me, which path do you seek?

Speaking the Namea quick devotionBefore we get started, here are a few questions that I want us to read and think about. First question, When you first encounter a challenge, what do you do? My answer would be to pray. Next question, do you know the full extent of God’s power? In other words, do you know of something that God can’t do? I hope you answered no.

It is important for us to understand that God is all powerful, and there is nothing He is incapable of doing. He is Our Advocate, the Almighty, Alpha & Omega, and The Ancient Of Days. There are hundreds of titles that have been given to Our Lord Jesus Christ. When we speak the name that is above all other names, we see the sick and diseased healed; we see broken families and homes brought back together again; and we see those that were lost, found.

As Christians, we witness many miracles that were done by Him right before our very eyes. If you look around your house, and those who live in it, you can count them all as miracles in themselves. Speaking the name of Jesus is powerful. Not just powerful, but beyond our comprehension. Philippians 2:9-11 says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in Heaven, and things in Earth, and things under the Earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” If you have some kind of situation that you don’t know how you are going to get through it, don’t fear because God has always been there. He’s here when you need Him the most, and during the times that you don’t have any critical or even of the littlest of problems. And by the way, everybody has problems and situations that are going on in their lives, I know I do. So no matter what facial expression someone may have pulled off, don’t be fooled! They are going through just as many things as you are. They might not be the same as yours, but a problem is a problem, no matter how small they might seem. But as Christians, we have an advantage. We have a name that is above every name, and in the Name of Jesus, we can have peace with our problems and situations. When we call upon that name, we will be witnessing something that happens that no doctor, person, or thing can explain in words.

God’s power is greater than any doctors’ report, or that of what our minds can imagine. So know that when you call upon His name, you aren’t just saying any name, you are saying The Name. It is the name that should never be spoken lightly, but used for a greater thing that can happen in your life. So the next time that you are praying, don’t forget to speak His name above your situation and other peoples’ situation. God can use us to do mighty works through us, if we just call upon Him.

A Country Mournscurrent events

Late in the night of October 2, 2017, a security guard by the name Jesus Campos of the Mandalay Bay Hotel was shot by gunman, Stephen Paddock, on the 32nd floor. The Washington Post stated the security guard was shot at 9:59, and six minutes later the gun man began showering the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with bullets. Campos, the security guard, had entered the 32nd floor because there was an open door that was causing an alarm to sound. When Campos came near Paddock’s door, Stephen began firing at him, causing a bullet to strike Campos’ leg. Immediately, Campos tried to flee the rounds being shot at him, once he was in a safe place, he alerted the hotel security to report that he has been injured and that there was a gunman on the premises.

About ten minutes after the security guard was shot, Paddock be-gan to rain down bullets upon the Route 91 crowd. Before the festi-val goers realized they were being targeted, many people thought the “popping” sounds were fireworks, but when a fans were hit with bullets the crowd immediately went into a panic. As people rushed over each other to get to safety, many people were shot. Sadly because this was a festival the people were bar-ricaded in causing the death toll and in-

jury toll to increase. A witness from CNN News named Rachel de Kerf stated, ”...the gunshots lasted 10-15 minutes. It did not stop.” A total of 59 people were killed that fateful day and more than five hundred were injured.

When the authorities approached the room of Stephen Paddock, it was said that he was alive and responding, but when they entered he was found dead,

believed to have committed suicide. As the authority began to search the room, they found a total of twenty three weapons, such as, automatic rifles and multiple scopes. In Paddock’s car, multiple pounds of ammonium nitrate and materials for explosives were found. At his home, authorities found nineteen more firearms and multiple explosives along with thousands of pounds of ammuni-tion and electrical devices. Detectives are still not sure what caused this horrific crime. Some believe the theory of a terrorist organization, but there has been no proof of such. CNN News as reported that at this time authorities have taken notice that Paddock wired a total of $100,000 to an off shore account located in the Philippines and are currently working with the Filipino government to detect where this money was wired to, and for what purpose was it wired.

October 2, 2017 will forever be known as the worst mass shooting in the History of the United States. We mourn the loss of a special needs teacher, a nurse, police records technician, a school office man-ager, and many, many more. In a world that seems to be getting farther and father a way from God, we as Christians need to pray and have hope that the lLord has a great plan for us.

Revelation 21:4And God will wipe away every tear form their eyes; there shall be no more death, no sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

The NLCS Lady Crusaders Volleyball team tried their best and never gave up no matter what the score was. They demonstrated heart and represented the character and values of NLCS well. Sure, there were some great moments and some not-so-great moments, but that happens to the best of us. It was a great sea-son for the Lady Crusaders and I know the team is already looking forward to getting back to the court next year!

Fall & Winter Fashion Trendslifestyle

Shaded SpruceWear shaded spruce tops with neu-tral bottoms or with the same color

bottoms. Also, leathery browns look good with this color and add

to the fall feel of the outfit.

Golden LimeThis color looks best with navy blue

or gray. You can add some lighter colors as accents but I wouldn’t have a lighter color as one of the

main pieces to the outfit involving this color.

MarinaMarina is one of the brighter col-

ors of the pantone trends of 2017. Because of this fact, I would wear

it with white or another marina colored item.

Ballet SlipperBallet slipper is a soft color that would look best with the tawny port that I just introduced or a

cream/off-white color. This color also looks good with

fuzzy textures.

Tawny PortThe dark reds were made for colder weather and they look so well con-trasted with white or creams. The

drastic differences in the two colors will make the tawny port pop.

Navy PeonyThis color is darker and has a more

winter feel to it. I would wear dark-er colors such as maroon, hunter green, or black, with this type of

navy.

Fall & Winter Fashion Trendslifestyle

Neutral GrayGrays are a very cold and wintery

color so any textures such as feath-ery, sweater, or leather material would look really nice. Another

color of gray looks best when put together in an outfit.

GrenadineGrenadine is a very bold and pow-erful red color that just pops with every outfit. I would not recom-

mend many other colors with this but if you need an accent then

metallic gold or creams.

Butter RumThis leathery looking color is a ne-cessity during the fall season. Pair this with flannel or cheetah prints

to get your best look.

Fall & Winter Fashion Trendslifestyle

Autumn MapleThis is the perfect fall color that looks best with denim or navy

blue. This works well on sweaters and boots.

Fall & Winter StaplesNot sure exactly what you’ll need for the up-coming cold season? You can’t go wrong with

these in your closet!

☞Flannel shirts☞Fuzzy sweaters☞Leather boots (brown & black)☞Patterned scarfs (plaid, cheetah, striped, etc.)

☞Leg warmers☞Sorel boots☞Fluffy earmuffs☞Santa Hat☞Reindeer Antlers☞Elf Hat!

NF - Perception music

On October 6th, 2017, Nate Feuerstein (NF) released his 3rd studio album, “Perception”. NF has cultivated a huge fan base, and this album was highly anticipated. I liked NF’s music since the moment I first heard him in 2014. He has gotten better and better since then. This album shows how much an artist can grow and change musically, but still be themselves. This album averages 2,701,211 streams per song on Spotify alone (10/17/2017). This album sold 53,000 units in its first week, and landed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums.

Track 1: “Intro III” Ever since NF’s first album “Mansion”, he has had a series of songs called “Intro”. Intro has always been very aggressive, and surprisingly, Intro III is a lot calmer than the first two. NF is having a conversation with the fear that plagues his conscience, and in the end he buries his fear. This track shows off his lyrical prowess, and he deals with the issues he’s talked about since “Mansion”. 4:29

Track 3: “10 Feet Down ft. Ruelle” This is one of my favorite songs on the album. This song talks about how the life we’re living is our own life, and we need to make something of it, and about how NF has been at the bottom his whole life and people have told he’d never make it as a music artist, and now he’s made it. This song is very reminiscent of his song “I Just Wanna Know” off of his second album, “Therapy Ses-sion”. 3:37

NF - Perception music

Track 6: “Let You Down” This song is a very emotional song about how he can’t get along with an import-ant person in his life, and how he feels like he lets them down constantly. He talks about the disagree-ments they have and how they can never come to a solution. He also talks about how he feels as though he has unrealistic expectations for that person. 3:32

Track 8: “My Life” This song is written to one of his siblings, and talks about how he wishes he would’ve fixed the issues they had together. He talks about how people make mistakes and how that’s just a part of life and that we need to be able to get past that. 3:36

Track 11: “Remember This” This song is basically NF giving advice on how to live life. He talks about obsta-cles he’s experienced and how he overcame them. He states that people will say that you won’t accomplish your dreams, and then when you do, they’ll act like your best friend and they’ll pretend they always be-lieved in you. He says that we only have one life, and we should live it to the fullest. 4:00

Track 14: “3 A.M.” This song talks about how he remains loyal to the people who believed in him when he wasn’t famous. It talks about a person who was once in his life and very special to him left him, and now she wants back in his life but she doesn’t want to be completely loyal, and wants to play games with him. 3:38

Lecrae - All Things Work Togethermusic

On September 22, 2017, Hip-Hop Recording Artist Lecrae Moore (Lecrae) released his 8th studio album titled “All Things Work Together”. This is the first album he released since his 2014 release, “Anomaly”. The point of this album is to point out that as Christians and as humans we all go through tough times and strug-gles, but to remember that in the end, everything will work together for good because God has his hand over our life. This album sold 32,000 units in its first week, and it peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums.

I really enjoyed this project as a whole. The production quality and the lyrical talent/meaning are phe-nomenal. Me personally, I enjoy an album that takes you on a journey, and this album did that exactly.

Track 1: “Always Knew” This song was the perfect recap of his life since the release of his last album. It also touches over the situations of America, and the things that are happening currently. This song is 3:35, and is a perfect intro to the album.

Track 3: “Broke” This song talks about how Lecrae grew up poor, and how that struggle helped shape him to be the man he is today. The main part of the hook states “being broke made me rich”, meaning his being poor helped him to focus on God and his religion, therefore making him rich beyond earthly means. This song is 3:00, and the hook features secular Hip-Hop artist King Los.

Track 4: “Blessings ft. Ty Dolla $ign” This song talks about how in all the struggles of life, to always count

musicyour blessings and remember what God has done for you. This song was originally released on January 27 of 2017, and Lecrae received a lot of flak for featuring a secular artist on this song. People were saying that he had sold out, and that he wasn’t a Christian anymore, etc. The song remained on the Billboard Top 10 for about 2 ½ ish months. This got Lecrae a lot more fame than he already had. 3:51, Produced by Mike Will Made It

Track 5: “Whatchu Mean ft. Aha Gazelle” This song doesn’t necessarily have a deep message or meaning, but it talks about how some people don’t really mean what they say. This is just a song to turn up to, and doesn’t really have anything to do with God. The other artist in this song, Aha Gazelle, was signed to Lec-rae’s record label “Reach Records” on February 1st of this year. The artists signed to Reach Records are Andy Mineo, KB, Tedashii, Trip Lee, Lecrae, GAWVI, and Aha Gazelle. 4:21, Produced by “Winners Circle”

Track 6: “Hammer Time ft. 1K Phew” This song is saying that we are untouchable because God is in our situation. 1K Phew is a Hip-Hop recording artist from Atlanta, and does the hook and the first verse for this song. With production from MetroBoomin, this song was supposed to be a big hit, but was not as popular as it should have been. If you have listened to any secular hip-hop songs since 2014, you have probably heard a song produced by MetroBoomin. He has made beats and produced songs for artists like Drake, Fu-ture, 21 Savage, Big Sean, Migos, Young Thug, and the list goes on and on. He produced the most songs of 2016, and was the Number 1 producer of 2016 via Billboard. For Lecrae to be able to get a song from Metro-Boomin is huge. 3:34, Produced by Metroboomin

Track 7: “Come and Get Me” This song is basically Lecrae saying “If you want to stop me from being a Christian, go ahead and try.” Lecrae talks about past experiences, and how he’s not afraid of people or of the devil because God is with him at all times. 4:13, Produced by ??? (This is also my favorite song on the album.)

Track 9: “Wish You the Best ft. Verse Simmonds” This song is an apology to a girl in his past. When Lecrae was in college, he was in a serious relationship with a woman, and they had an affair and she got preg-nant. Lecrae convinced her to have an abortion, and when she did, they parted ways. This sent Lecrae into a deep depression, but he found his way back to God and repented of his sins. You can read about this story in his book, “Unashamed”. 3:44, Produced by ???

Track 11: “I’ll Find You ft. Tori Kelley” This song was first released on June 9th of this year, and is a song about enduring your struggles and waiting for God. This is the most bought and streamed song on the album, and Lecrae received critical acclaim for this song. For the music video, they partnered with St. Jude Children’s Hospital for a touching video that showed children with cancer. They started a donation and helped kids with cancer. 3:38, Produced by ???

The Armor of Godspiritual life

“13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” -Ephesians 6:13-17Helmet of SalvationThe Roman helmet, like helmets today, protected the head from the attacks of the enemy. When we keep our minds focused on Christ and His salvation, we will find that our thoughts will be protected from temp-tation that is too strong to withstand. Our helmet of salvation gives us protection from the cares of the world.

Breastplate of RighteousnessThe breastplate provided protection from the vital organs like the heart, lungs, liver, etc. Without the

breastplate, the enemy’s arrows would be fatal to the soldier. Righteousness protects our heart and our spirit from the enemies attacks.

Belt of TruthIn Rome, people would draw-up and tie their lower garment between their legs in order to increase mo-bility and speed. This prevented the garment from being snagged by something or tangled up in their feet which would cause them to stumble or fall. The belt of the truth of God’s Word will work to make sure that you are not tripped up by error and that you are able to maneuver safely through temptation.

Shoes of the Gospel of PeaceJust like a soldier’s shoes protected his feet and helped him to stand firmly, so also will the peace of God

provide us with emotional and spiritual stability. When temptation to be angry, bitter, or unforgiving comes along, our feet will be firmly grounded in truth and we will be at peace.

Sword of the SpiritThe Roman soldier’s sword was his only offensive weapon. Different swords were designed for different styles of fighting. Just like the soldier, if we do not have the Sword at our disposal we are a moving target. The Sword allows us to attack. The Bible is our Sword and the various verses in it can be used for various types of fighting. Our weapon is always sure to prevail when it is the Word of God.

Shield of Faith Roman shields were very large. They were big enough for the soldier to hide behind when used properly. A shield was a guard. A shield of faith is our guard against temptation. When we pick it up and use it against

the devil it will guard us and deflect his temptations. Our faith in God and His Word is our first line ofdefense.
