The Italian Navy naval base “Mar Grande” inTaranto, opened in June 2004, was created toimprove efficency and to reduce the impact on thecity of the old Naval Base.

The Navy Station is placed over an area of about 60hectares and it is the most magnificent achievementof the Italian navy in the post-war period.

NIDEC ASI has contributed to this project byproviding the electric system of the 50/60Hzconversion stations.

The rotating converter systems are composed by:

• Qty.10 Motor-Generator sets 3000 kVA each, with a 10 pole synchronous motorand a 12 pole synchronous generator, rigidly coupled for frequency conversion from

50 to 60Hz.

• Qty.2 (redundant) frequency converter to start-up each set and take it to thesynchronous speed

• Qty.20 exciter controls

The overall conversion system is managed via a control system PLC based with relevant HMI tocontrol and monitor its operation

The control system is in charge in particular of the automatic connection/disconnection of eachgroup in case of increased/decreased power needs.
