To provide context for how this odd thought popped into my psyche at 5.30am, I will provide a little background. As a child, I always enjoyed running but never achieved great results. I was more than content with this lack of „success‟, as I saw each race as a challenge, set small goals and felt a great sense of intrinsic satisfaction when I attained these eg. to finish, not walk, pass three runners up a hill etc. Winning was never one of them. Then, partly by luck, in my first year of high school I won our school cross country. This buoyed me and my goals slowly became more ambitious and I ended up having some success in the sport. This led me to a point my adult life where I took up marathon running and again, had moderate success. Since turning 40, my running „career‟ has been checkered with a string of minor and major injuries, much to my frustration. Some of the poor Joey‟s staff are already sick of hearing my woes about minor calf tears, inflammation of previous hamstring injuries and the dreaded plantar fasciitis!! The problem is, when I start to have an injury-free sequence of runs, my mind is transported back to a 15 year old me running 1500m races or an early 30s version running marathons, while my body is not. It is then that the inevitable injury is sustained. This morning it dawned upon me; I need to forget everything I have done prior to this moment if I want an injury-free response from my body. I need to „un-learn‟ what I know and „remember‟ of running and run like a novice in the sport. This entails running at a much slower pace than I ever have, running on even and flat terrain and running shorter distances. Four runs in and still injury-free, I may be on the right path. In life, „un-learning‟ is an essential skill. Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” We all have our flaws and weaknesses as parents, teachers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, and importantly, learners. To improve what we have been working hard toward, it is often essential that we hit the reset button and start from the beginning; attempt things using different methods. St Pope John Paul II spoke about the „New Evangelisation‟ of the Catholic Church and that it would only work if people employed “new ardour, expression and methods”. People in a phase of „un-learning‟ could lean heavily on these three senses if they are to succeed. I think of a number of famous „un-learners‟ who have employed new ardour, expression and methods to succeed in life. Dally Messenger, an Australian sporting legend, famously transitioned from rugby union to rugby league and became one of the greatest. Paul McCartney had to transition from guitarist to bass player for The Beatles as John Lenon did not want to play bass. And possibly, the most important „un-learners‟ we know of, that of St Paul; the former Pharisee who persecuted Christians following the death of Christ in first century Israel. Following his conversion on the road to Damascus, Saul (who became Paul) had to „un- learn‟ all that he was and knew and in the process, went on to become the most prolific writer of the New Testament and one of the founding fathers of our Church. Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph‟s College, This morning, during my meandering, pre-dawn run along Fingal Rd, a thought dawned upon me; how important the skill of „un-learning‟ is in our lives. His words and interpretations of the teachings of Christ are filled with “new ardour, expression and methods” and resonate still with us today. So my challenge this week is this: if there are elements in your life as a friend, family member or importantly, a learner (which we all are) that you know require improvement, how will you „un-learn‟ what you know to ensure you start moving to an elevated and better place? Best of luck!!

(Post Script: This article was written on Friday and I ran the Park Run on Saturday at Kirra where I promptly ‘un-learnt’ what I had convinced myself was the correct way to go, ran too fast and re-injured my calf. No-one said un-learning was easy!!)

PROCLAIM LISMORE Last Friday staff were blessed to be part of the Proclaim Lismore Staff day, hosted by SJC and SJPS. Over 300 staff members from surrounding schools were in attendance and enjoyed the presentations provided by Jonathan Doyle and Dr Anne Graham. We were serenaded by Stephen Kirk and heard the stirring words of our CSO Director, Mr David Condon and Assistant Director Mr Gary Reen. A very big congratulations to SJC staff member Teneille De Luca, who was one of two master of ceremonies, along with College parent (and SJPS Principal) Nic McTaggart. They did a wonderful job. Next week‟s newsletter will contain information about the day.

2018 SUBJECT SELECTION EVENING Information for this evening (Tuesday June 6) will be sent out this week. A number of new initiatives are being trialled this year for the Year 10 students moving into Year 11 including a profiling system for each student that will provide information regarding how staff see students being suited to each of the subjects on offer. Selections will be made online to ensure accurate and efficient data entry and for our Year 11 students, we will be offering a completely non-ATAR pathway to ensure our students are being catered for in all realms of their education journey.

WEEK 9 PARENT EVENING Monday, June 19 will see a meeting of the SJC Parent Group in the staff common room. The meeting will commence at 6.30pm and all parents and carers are invited to attend. As previously stated, the intention is to gauge from parents and carers what people would like to see from the group, how the College can best aid parents to help their children in their education and to provide a voice to the parent body of the community. Following this evening, there will be two such evenings each term. Please mark the date in your calendar. Regards, Mr Scott Thomson Principal

Before School Supervision: Student supervision is available prior to the commencement of the school day, from 8:20am until 8:45am.

“ “

Luke 8:16-18

Jesus said to his disciples, “No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.”

Lord, to be a Christian today is challenging. In times of struggle I am tempted to hide my light, to remain anonymous, to be silent. Lord, when the wick of my lamp flickers and fades, strengthen its beam and let me be again a light bearer, a beacon of hope to those I daily encounter.

This is demanding, Lord. I am not comfortable shining before others as an example of Christian living. But I am not much use to you if I hide my allegiance. Saint Francis of Assisi would tell his friars to walk through the town and preach the Gospel, sometimes by talking, more often by the example of their lives.

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other. At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me. God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me even more than my most intimate friend. I take a moment to greet my loving God.

The world is changed by your example,

not by your opinion. Paulo Coelho

Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have

never failed to imitate them. James A. Baldwin

Lead by example with hope, never fear.

Michelle Obama

Lord, make me an instrument

of your peace:

where there is hatred,

let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning

that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying

that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity,

they think of you. H. Jackson Brown, Jr

With our theme this year to „Do All Things Well‟, how does today‟s scripture affect you? What part of it strikes a chord in you? Perhaps even now something is rising to the surface of your consciousness. Remember that to be conscious about something is be aware of it. Stay in this moment. Let the thoughts form themselves into words. Journal if you feel the need. Look outside yourself. Slow down and enjoy the beauty around you. Breathe. Acknowledge that life if a gift that you have been given. Look within yourself. Accept in your own existence the presence of God. The human mind cannot always glimpse something of God‟s generosity and overflowing compassion, but the heart of God sees only an opportunity to be generous. Here is our opportunity to „Do All Things Well‟, by opening our hearts to God, to our neighbours - our brothers and sisters in Christ – our SJC family and the world beyond. LANGUAGE PERFECT Each year we enter our language students into an online language competition called Language Perfect. This year, all Year 8 students and then elective French classes though to Year 12 Beginners and Continuers have been answering vocabulary questions that test for reading and writing skills as well as listening in not just French which we learn here, but where many are applying their knowledge of other languages or discovering the links to learning other new languages. The competition has been running since May 15 to Thursday 25 May and at one stage, through the screenshot, we were listed as coming 4th in the world, in the category for school populations of 100-250 students. Some schools have entered their entire school cohort but we have demonstrated a great intensity of engagement which, at this point, will see more than 100 certificates arriving for credit, bronze, silver, gold and elite levels of attainment. Bravo to all our successful students. The learning and revision will be beneficial to all in the upcoming half yearly examinations. Mrs Wendy Peterson Leader of Learning – Creative Arts

CREATIVE ARTS

Congratulations to Year 10 Drama on their first full production. Both the Primary school and the parent/friend audiences found it very entertaining.
