FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK—Aaron Richards MERCY DAY Tomorrow the school will celebrate Mercy Day with the Sisters of Mercy. The children will travel by bus to St Gregory’s Church for Mass that will start at 10.30am. The Mass gives our school community an opportunity to celebrate the service the Sisters provided our school as the founding order. The buses will leave school at approximately 9.45am and be back at school by 12pm. Children are to wear their full school uniform. YEAR 7-8 OPEN NIGHT Last night the school held a year 7-8 open night. This event was attended by approximately twenty children and thirty parents eager to hear about the exciting opportunities and engaging learning programme we have organized for them next year. The team and I have created a prospectus that provides information about St Joseph’s School’s intermediate programme. A copy of the prospectus is available in the school if parents wish to pick up a copy. EXAM WEEK It has been exam week this week with many children in Year 3-8 sitting Progress Achievement Tests (PAT). The PAT provides the school with information relating to student progress through the year. The results will provide teachers with information relating to the rate of progress and progress in comparison to national norms. The tests also identify individual students strengths and areas for improvement in Reading and Mathematics. The PAT is one of the many assessment tools we use to monitor student achievement. We also use AsTTle, Literacy Progressions and Running Records to ensure children are on track to success, as well as helping teachers identify what we need to do to accelerate students performance to help them achieve the standards. The test information is also used when writing students reports. On Monday and Tuesday next week the Junior Team will distribute reports for students who have reached their reporting anniversary. Reports for the remaining Junior, Junior Middle, Middle and Senior students will be distributed next term. However, if you would like to see some of your child’s assessment information, please do not hesitate to approach your child’s teacher.

FAITH FACT On Friday 15th September it was the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. This feast dates back to the 12th century. The title"Our Lady of Sorrows" focuses on the sorrows of Mary's life from “Bethlehem to Calvary”, most especially “her intense suffering during the passion and death of Christ.” (Saint John Paul II). Because of this Mary knows our sorrows and our pains too. We honour our Blessed Mother Mary, as a faithful disciple and exemplar of faith.

In Sympathy We offer our deepest sympathy to Matthew Stevenson (Mercy 2) on the recent death of his grandfather. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this sad time.
