Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the Northeast United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, Vermont and New Hampshire to the north. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean.

What you should know about our state.According to the US Census Bureau, Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the

country with 2.2 divorces per 1000 people.

Although the Library of Congress contains the most volumes in the country at more than 29,550,000, Harvard University‘s Library is second with more than 15,000,000

and the Boston Public Library is third with more than 14,000,000.

Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, first demonstrated it in Boston in 1876. The first telephone line was

installed in a home in Somerville, next door to the current residence of Congressman Capuano.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith in Springfield.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William Morgan in Holyoke.

The first public school system was founded in Boston in 1635 and Boston Latin was our country's first public school.

The Mather School in Dorchester was founded in 1639 as the first public elementary school.

When you take a stroll on the Boston Common, you are visiting the nation's first public park, established in 1634.

Johnny Appleseed was designated the official folk hero of the Commonwealth on August 2, 1996.

State Bird The Black-Capped Chickadee was adopted as the State Bird by the Massachusetts Legislature

on March 21, 1941.

State Fish The Cod. A soft-finned fish, usually 10-20 lbs.

State FlowerThe Mayflower also commonly known as the ground laurel or trailing arbutus, was adopted as

the official flower of the Commonwealth by the General Court on May 1, 1918.

State Muffin The schoolchildren of Massachusetts petitioned for the Corn Muffin, a staple of New England

cooking, and the Legislature made it official in 1986.

State Beverage Cranberry Juice was named the beverage of the Commonwealth on May 4, 1970.

State Cookie The Chocolate Chip Cookie was designated the official cookie of the Commonwealth on July 9,

1997.

ClimateAlthough Massachusetts is a relatively small state, there are significant climatic differences between its eastern and western sections. The entire state has cold winters and moderately warm summers, but the Berkshires in the west have both the coldest winters and the coolest summers. The normal January temperature in Pittsfield in the Berkshires is 22°F (–6°C), while the normal July temperature is 68°F (20°C). The interior lowlands are several degrees warmer in both winter and summer; the normal July temperature is 71°F (22°C). The coastal sections are the warmest areas of the state; the normal January temperature for Boston is 30°F (–1°C), and the normal July temperature is 74°F (23°C).
