Working towards being a sustainable school A couple of years ago we received sound parent feedback on becoming a sustainable school. We have pro-gressively been taking this feedback on board and have most parents supporting this idea. We work towards sustainability at KDPS in a variety of ways. We believe becoming a sustainable school is imperative for a vari-ety of reasons and work together to do so by; Minimising rubbish brought to school, hence the idea of rubbish free lunches and the use of contain-

ers – we appreciate all parents who support this Appointing Environment and Sustainability leaders Integrating the learning into lessons and units of work through Creative Minds, English, Maths and

STEM Focusing on recycling all paper and plastic, at the same eliminating using these as much as possible Introducing XUNO and Survey Monkey to eliminate the paper we send home to families Eliminating paper plates and disposable cutlery at whole school events, including our Easter Fair

We acknowledge that we are in a time of transition as we have integrated XUNO as part of our home to school communication processes. As outlined previously, the purpose of introducing XUNO is to provide a more effective mode of communication between home and school when it comes to formal notifications for reminders, permissions, newsletters/ calendar updates, payments and absence. We thank you all for being open to learning and coming on board with this process. As with anything new, it takes time to learn a process and become comfortable with using it. We encourage parents to come and see us if you are still having trouble with this and we will work through this with you. Thankyou to all par-ents who have taken the time to pop into the office and seek support – we have got many of you sorted very quickly. We know that many of you are frustrated with the App not providing the log in function ‘yet’. We ask you to be patient with this, the function is coming in the very near future. In the meantime, you will need to contin-ue to log into your XUNO portal koroitps.xuno.com.au and use your log in and password details to access documents and permissions. Please note- permission notes expire a couple of days before the event. We will always send you a reminder to log in and do this (we understand people get busy), but we are trying to eliminate paper copies being sent home and having you come in on the morning of an event to sign a permission at the office. We are trying to work with you in a more efficient and user friendly way.

We will also be using the Survey Monkey function in place of paper copies for things like order forms, parent

helper RSVPs, feedback and for any other suitable functions to avoid sending paper home. It is a much more

We will also be using the Survey Monkey function in place of paper copies for things like order forms,

parent helper RSVPs, feedback and for any other suitable functions to avoid sending paper home. It

is a much more efficient way of communicating with you, seeking your responses and feedback - we

hope you understand this perspective too. Come and see us if you require further clarification. We

are more than happy to assist.

Look out for the Rookie Reporters page in every edition of the newsletter. The grade 5/6 students will all have a go at reporting on special events of day to day information in the newsletter. They will also interview students from different learning communities to seek their opin-ions and feedback. We are excited about adding an element of student voice to the fortnightly news-letter. Let us know what you think.

Parent/Teacher Partnership Meetings

Based on parent feedback we have made some adjustments to partnership meetings this year. Parents have indicated they would like time alone with the teacher (without their child/children present). On Wednesday 8th May, teachers will be available to meet with parents for 10 minutes from 1.30 – 6pm at a scheduled time (students are not required to attend). Students will be supervised in an alternative program from 12.30-3.25 on this day, parents are also welcome to pick their children up at 1.30 from school on this day. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure both parents and teachers are working together – in part-

nership, to create the best learning and growth conditions for your children at school and home.

Your time preferences will be available through XUNO – we will publish these before the end of term. All parents are expected to attend this meeting, or make an alternative time. In September you will have the opportunity to meet with your teachers again, this time with your

child/children present. The purpose of the September meeting is for students to show case their

work, explain their learning journey and celebrate what they have achieved with you.

The Irish Festival is fast approaching and we are forming our staff action team this week. The action team will work on co-ordinating the parade and food stall at the festival. We will be sending out a survey monkey to seek parent helpers. Please RSVP if you are available to help out. We also encourage families to join us in the parade. We have an event in XUNO, please provide permission only if your children will be attending the parade on the Saturday morning and walking with us. This activity is optional. It would be great to get as many chil-dren involved as possible if you are available. Curriculum Day Friday 26th April On Friday 26th April, the staff will be working at school – this has been approved as a pupil

free day by school council.

Welcome to the KDPS team Amie Timewell This week we welcome Amie Timewell to our staff. Amie has been appointed to the Business

Manager role while Theresa McCosh takes leave during term 2 and 3. Amie has had a wonder-

Rookie Report Easter Fair – By Emily Gilding and Dylan Ampt

Last Friday we had our School’s Easter Fair that everyone was welcome to come to. We sold wrist bands to children and they were allowed to play on all of the rides and cuddle the ani-mals. We also held a Koroit Primary talent show at the fair, where the students had to get up into the truck that was the stage, lots of kids got to show their talent to the whole community. At the fair we had a slushy machine that the grade sixes helped look after with Mr Ryan, next to that was the BBQ where we sold sausages and hamburgers, they were delicious. In our room (grade 5/6) were the roaming reptiles; crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtle, gecko and iguanas. The play area had lots of activities for us to join in such as jumping castles, mini golf, zorb ball and face painting but the best part was the dunk machine. The dunk machine let us dunk the teacher! It was really funny watching Mrs Milich, Mr Hodgson, Mrs Mack, Mrs Cooper, Mr Ryan, Mrs Myers, Leon and our school president Mr Jac Monk get dunked. There was lots of people standing around laughing. Our Easter Fair also had lots of stalls that people could buy things from, earrings and jewellery, honey, art, clothes and lots more. The hands-on learning team and Jodie were selling plants, we helped them. Emily – my favourite part of the fair was putting the snake around my neck and holding the crocodile. I loved how all the kids enjoyed the Easter fair. Dylan – My favourite part of the fair was the slushy machine, the food stalls and the inflata-bles.

Primary Welfare Officer

School Council President’s Report To keep you all up-to-date with the decisions from School Council we are adding a new section to the KDPS newsletter, the ‘School Council President’s Report’, which will give all a brief overview of what role School Council plays at KDPS and what was discussed at each meeting. Role of School Council at KDPS For those who may not be too familiar with the role of School Council at KDPS I will give you a brief overview of what we do. School council plays a key role in setting and monitoring the KDPS direction, with three main responsibilities: Finance – overseeing the development and expenditure of the annual budget and ensuring proper rec-ords are kept of the school’s financial operation. Strategic Planning – participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan. This was undertaken last year and sets the direction for the continued improvement for the next few years of our school. Policy Development and Review – developing, reviewing and updating policies that reflect a school’s values and support the school’s broad direction outlined in its strategic plan. One of the most important roles we have as councillors is to be the conduit between the broader com-munity and the school. We always welcome feedback and suggestions - please do not hesitate to have a chat to one of us. We are here to help. Having said this, it is important to understand that there is a functional split between School Council and school curriculum and activities. The school council has a governance role, while it is the School (e.g. principal) is responsible for ensuring the delivery of a com-prehensive education program to all students. Our first meeting of the year- held on Wednesday 20th March. This year we have a slight change in council members. I would like to thank Brendan McCosh for his participation over the last two years and welcome the three fresh faces - Carla Murrell, Christine Hena and Hayley Bartlett. Welcome!

Page 12: NEWSLETTER - koroitps.vic.edu.au · Safe travels Theresa Mcosh (and Murray) Theresa is heading North for a couple of terms to spend some time with her daughter Laura and son in-law

At our first meeting for 2019 the AGM was held to elect our office bearers, with the following coun-cillors being elected: President – Jac Monk

Vice President – Bart Gane Treasurer – Tim Martin

Community Member – Bec Van Bruggen Parent members – Carla Murrell, Christine Hena, Kristy White DET members – Hayley Hoy, Mitch Hodgson, Hayley Bartlett Following our first meeting, in summary I can say that we have a number of very exciting things happening at our school. As I am sure many of you are well aware we have some fancy new play-ground equipment arriving the coming months. In addition to the continued focus on reading, writing and math, we are having an increased focus on student voice and emotional wellbeing through the Play is the way program. PLAY IS THE WAY® is a practical methodology for teaching so-cial and emotional skills using guided play, classroom activities and an empowering language. It is a process that gives primary schools a way to develop, improve and entrench the personal and social capabilities of students. Marina Milich, Nicholas Ryan and Hayley Hoy participated in quality professional learning over the summer. They were successfully accepted into the Harvard University Data Wise Course through the school of Leading Education. This is the first time Harvard University have brought the course abroad and we should be extremely proud that our teachers and Principal were a part of this learn-ing. The Data Wise course supports educators in using collaborative data inquiry to drive continu-ous improvement of teaching and learning for all students. Excitingly, last year KDPS was selected as a PLC link school for 2019 for the work our teachers do as Professional Learning Community (PLC). This means our school is going to be used as a model school for schools in the Wimmera South West (Warrnambool and surrounding areas, Portland, Hamilton and Horsham) This is a pretty big thing for KDPS, and comes with lots of exciting opportu-nities for our fabulous staff to host external teachers and showcase our teaching and learning mod-els, the way their meetings are run, the way they work together and how all their work is based on the needs of our kids. I hope you all agree that this reflects the current position of the school as leading the way in the education of our children, but also give our teachers the opportunity to fur-ther extend and refine their teaching abilities and apply current research best practices at our school. I hope you can all join me in congratulating the KDPS staff on this fantastic achievement. Until next time. Jac Monk School Council President
