The first order of MCC business drew many neighbors. Bob Edmington and Bob Minnott from Madison Park described a recent traffic revision study on Doerfell Dr. between Madrona Dr. and Bush School. This was a six-week trial to monitor volume and speed along the route via placement of temporary barricades. Video recordings showed how drivers responded to the change; the barricades were re-peatedly vandalized during the study. Edmington reported that some information was yet to be tallied, but study designers were not happy with the proposed recon-figuration and are not likely to recommend moving forward with it as a long-term solution. Comments are welcome at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/11jHT9y2vDtl-sIa4RNR5e_Q9TfeDS7SS_mSy5rXSwzU/viewform and will be part of a final report to be shared with surrounding community councils including the MCC.

The second order of business was the planned development at MLK Jr. Way and Union. In this case, when Ernie’s suicide attempt rips a hole in the floor of the apartment above, the lonely old man begins to form a friendship with the young boy who lives there.

Madrona’s George Martin also starred in an earlier movie of Hadley’s and others that won the 48-hour film festival award at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth titled Plane Love. Another of Hadley’s films that has won many awards is The Talk, a short dark comedy that has won eight awards at national and international film festivals. studios with larger units on upper floors. A Madrona resident expressed concern for safety and traffic speed heading east on Union, and requested that a traffic study be commissioned with hope that a left turn lane might be added at the MLK and Union intersection. Another worried about water flowing below grade, but soils engineer Rob Ward said that the pro-posed new building will not go deep enough to affect existing water flow, and developers are required to collect water during a major storm. The Nov. design review meeting will follow and if approved, the plan is to begin March 2015 construction; it will take about a year to complete the project.

There were brief updates about upcoming neighborhood events including Madrona Halloween activities, the Nov. 15 MCC wine tasting fund-raiser, and a proposed 2015 author series partnership with Madrona K-8 and Seattle Public Library. The MCC decided not to sell holiday wreaths in 2014. Madrona Mayfair has been set for May 16, 2015.

The balance of the meeting provided informal opportunities to discuss future neighborhood events and MCC volunteer ac-tivities such as how to raise awareness for the No. 2 bus route, ways better to represent neighborhood diversity on the MCC and at sponsored events, and how to improve communication with neighbors. Also discussed was possible revival of the neighborhood BBQ and co-sponsorship opportunities.

Community and FriendshipsBy Burke Shethar, Madrona Pub

Madrona is a wonderful neighborhood community full of diversity, but it is cohesive and has a strong identity that reso-nates for most of us. People ask, “where do you live?” When I say Madrona, the response inevitably is “great neighborhood!” And it is. Part of what makes it great is the physical nature of the place: it is well-located near downtown but holds onto a suburban rather than urban feel. We also have a wonderful business district that includes many of the necessary staples with service companies like restaurants, salons, dry cleaners, shops, and convenience stores. We have a complement of com-panies who actually make things like wine, ceramics, and ornate glassware. Professional services are strong with architects, landscape designers, dentists, financial planners, attorneys, and many more. We have three grade schools, one of which has one of the best choirs I’ve heard (a holiday treat!). It is truly a village that has and will continue to help form the children who are lucky enough to grow up here.

That said, what makes Madrona a great neighborhood though is the people who have shaped it over time. Although I have lived here 20 years and my three kids have spent their entire lives here, many Madrona residents have been here far longer and are the real backbone of the neighborhood. Businesses come and go as do many of the residents. The ones that stay are what make Madrona what it is. One of my favorite long-time neighbors passed away recently.

Jack and I shared many small chats in the morning while I walked my dog by his home. He used to have a wonderful bas-set hound named Opal and he and I would talk weather, dogs, his rodeo photography, and once in a while he’d talk about being a fireman. Jack was a fireman right here in Madrona and the station, I was surprised to find out, was formerly housed in the Sally Goldmark Library. I’d ask him about the changes to the area and he’d smile and say that it still felt the same to him. I guess I was looking hard at the rising housing prices, new buildings going up, businesses closing for a new one to open.... I think I see now what he was saying. In spite of the outward changes, the people that live here and have lived here

House Party Invigorates Madrona PreK-8 Support

By Kim Bevington, Marion St.On Oct. 10, Jon and Stacey Kryman hosted a House Party to build support for Madrona PreK-8. Guests included Madrona business owners, PreK teachers, realtors, dedicated parents, and K-8 teachers, and staff. Under new leadership by Principal Mary McDaniel, Madrona PreK-8 is working hard to become a sought-after Central District public school by achieving aca-demic focus, championing their Music and Arts programs, and maximizing community involvement. “I was thrilled to see so many neighbors genuinely interested in seeing Madrona PreK-8 succeed. We were able to share new information about the school and discuss tangible ways everyone could help us change (continued on next page)

for some time share in a way of thinking and a way of living. I can’t put words to it but there is definitely something distinctive about people in Madrona and I feel lucky to be a part of it. I am also lucky to have met Jack and to have shared bits of time with him.

I hope we all take some time to appreciate what we have here in Madrona and make a point of celebrating our community and our friendships this fall.

the conversation” Stacey Kryman said.

Richard Marshall, Levy Coordinator, discussed ways the school is increasing their academic support for all students. Guests welcomed Seattle Music Partners that is bringing group and 1:1 instrumental instruction for 4th and 5th grade students. And, the group celebrated a newly installed “Peaceable Kingdom” mural along 32nd Avenue by Ryan “Henry” Ward. Glassybaby made a generous donation to fund the mural with the remain-der being raised through an in-store “Put a Paw on It” cupcake promotion at Cupcake Royale. The evening also served as a kick off for the Annual Campaign whose goal this year is to raise $25,000 to fund curriculum needs not provided by the District such as chess and Spanish instruction and the new K-2 Art Teacher.

The Madrona community can help Madrona PreK-8’s efforts by:

• Making a contribution to the Madrona Panther Partners PTSA. (www.madronapantherpartners.org) toward helping to meet Annual Campaign goals

• Asking friends, family, and neighbors to visit Cupcake Royale and participate in the “Put a Paw On It” in-store promotion helping to fund the Henry Peaceable Kingdom mural on 32nd Avenue.

• Encouraging prospective families to attend a school tour:

Thursday 11/13. Tours will begin in the school library at 9:45am. Or, come to the Open Play Gym for toddlers and preschoolers on 12/13 from 9:00am to 11:00am in the school gymnasium. Tours will continue in 2015, dates TBA.

• Visiting our Scholastic Book Fair on Dec. 13 during the Open Gym. This is open to the entire neighborhood, and all purchases directly benefit Madrona PreK-8.

Neighborhood School NewsMadrona K-8Students at the school have a new look this year; students wear khaki pants/skirts/shorts and girls also can wear khaki jumpers. Also beginning this year, all students can wear either a light blue or black polo shirt (short or long-sleeved) or light blue button down shirt. The school uniforms help students look professional as part of the Panther P.A.T.H.

The Kindergarten-5th grade classrooms will be given a ‘nu-trition break’ between lunch and the end of the school day, offering healthy snacks, like apples, oranges, or cheese sticks five days a week. This program, starting on Nov.10, is based on a similar one Leschi Elementary launched; with it we hope to improve student concentration. Further, the program will replace the need for parents to donate snack items or for teach-ers to purchase snacks for their classrooms. The fee for this program is $22 per student for the entire school year.

Do you have a child starting elementary school soon and are interested in finding out more about Madrona PreK-8? There

are several upcoming opportunities to come meet some of the staff, talk to parents of existing students, and take a school tour. • Thursday, Nov. 13 - School Tour. Meet in the school library at

St. Therese Catholic Academy If you passed by 35th Ave. on Sept. 27, you may have noticed a youthful presence in the air. Eighth grade students from St. Therese Catholic Academy (STCA) and incoming students from Seattle Pacific University (SPU) joined together for a Sat-urday of service beautifying the St. Therese campus. Together the two groups trimmed bushes, removed weeds and vines, picked up trash around the campus, and organized the library as well. The SPU students came as a part of their orientation activities for an event called City Quest in which students are sent across the city to community service activities. It was the first year St. Therese partnered with SPU for this endeavor and it was a great success.

STCA and SPU have also begun a new partnership to help bring aspiring educators in SPU’s undergraduate education program into classrooms at St. Therese. Each academic quarter around 20 of SPU students ’ enrolled in the Foundations of Teaching course will come to STCA for two hours per week to observe teaching in action and help assist the St. Therese staff

Yet Another Wine Venture In Madrona: Locus Wines

By Ton Yazici, Madrona Dr.As if there are not enough wineries in Washington, winemaker Rich Burton and I have taken the plunge to start our own wine venture: Locus Wines. While we’ve been making wines since 2012, it was only last July that we officially launched the label and started offering our wines commercially.

Locus means place, location, or point of origin in Latin. We believe that wines should showcase their native climate and soil and highlight what makes a region great for viticulture and winemaking. To that end, we pick the varietals that we believe best represent their place of origin and use them to produce high quality, reasonably-priced wines.

In 2012, we made a Syrah from Wahluke Slope, perched on the slopes of Columbia River. The temperate climate (think hot but windy summer days and cooler nights) produces great grapes with the right balance of fruit and spice.

In 2013, we produced a 100% Semillon and a Rosé (of Moud-vèdre and Cinsault) that really showed what Yakima Valley can do with commonly French-cultivated varietals. Here is a hint: We no longer have any. All that is left is what is in stores and select restaurants around town.

The ongoing 2014 harvest will bring us more of the 2013 varietals as well as some Cabernet and Grenache. We are also thrilled about some high-elevation Syrah from the higher and cooler climates of Naches Heights, to find out if we can upstage Rhone a bit with Washington fruit.

Starting with the 2015 harvest, we have designs to source grapes from neighboring states. We think Idaho is a great ecosystem for Spanish varietals like Albarino and Tempera-nillo, and of course, we are looking at Oregon for some good old-fashioned Pinot Noir.

I hope that I am not coming across as gloating: We are proud of our little baby. I finally can relate to those parents who con-stantly talk about their little ones or post their pictures on so-cial media. With Locus Wines, we have become those parents!

The winemaker and I live here on Madrona Dr. where the winery is registered, although we make the wines in Yakima. But don’t panic neighbors: we are not opening a tasting room, only semi-an-nual launch events to offer new wines. And of course, we are keeping our day jobs, because you know how the saying goes: if you want to make a fortune in the wine business, start with two fortunes.

with tutoring, small group instruction, and other activities as needed. The SPU students will benefit from this partnership by being exposed to a small, diverse school community in a faith-based setting as well as witnessing our Blended Learning approach in action. St. Therese will benefit by having more positive role models and educators for our students which will expand our ability to meet the needs of every individual child who comes through our doors each day. As we move forward into the next chapter of our history, we look forward further to expanding our community partnerships to better serve our students and families and empower them to be the next gener-ation of leaders for our community, nation and world. Mat-thew DeBoer, principal at STCA, can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or at 324-0460.

Pledge Your Support to Keep Madrona in Bloom Next Year

By Marie Doyle, 37th Ave.This was our ninth year of the Madrona Blossoms program, and we thank all of you individuals inside and outside Madro-

na, including business and real estate owners whose generous donations helped support the hanging flower baskets in Madrona. Our goal is to keep our neighborhood in bloom nearly year-round with hanging flower baskets from May to Oct., and we are seeking support for the coming year. One basket costs $275 annually to plant and maintain, so consider

supporting a basket or two as a family, with your friends, even with a group of neighbors.

If you enjoy this neighborhood decoration and color, it is time once again to pledge your support. We pay the bill for next year’s flowers in Jan. 2015, allowing time to start to grow flow-ers and assemble baskets that will be ready to hang by Mother’s Day in May. To donate, just fill out the envelope in this news-letter today, or if the envelope is missing send your donation, payable to Madrona Blossoms MCC, to Treasurer, c/ Madrona Plaza Bldg., 1421 34th Ave., Seattle WA 98122-3333. Thank you for your support.

It’s been 10 years since the Madrona Blossoms project began, and it is now time for Andrea Matus-Magee and I to step down from the leadership position we have played. We need new folks to join the fundraising and marketing team, and invite you to help. If you can volunteer your time, please contact me at [email protected].

In the last newsletter, we thanked people whose donations helped to pay for 2014 baskets. Since then a few more gener-ous summer donors also deserve a big thank you for supporting the summer flower baskets. They include: Madrona Wine Mer-chants, Conscious Body Pilates, the Madrona Refuge Building, Red Cow, Molly Moon’s Ice Cream, and glassybaby. We hope to have your support for the 2015 blossoms.

A Madrona Brand of ThanksThanksgiving provides a time for reflection on family, friends, neighbors, and nation. Here in Madrona we also have an op-portunity to begin thinking about the neighbors whose activi-ties make our lives better. On Feb. 7 the Madrona Community Council will sponsor the annual Neighborhood Appreciation Day when we invite you to honor recipients of neighborhood awards for the past 19 years and congratulation those who will receive awards in this 20th year of the awards. We especially invite you to nominate special neighbors for awards in one of the four categories described below. Nominations are due on or before Jan. 3, and can be submitted to [email protected]. To make a nomination, send the name of your selected candidate and a few sentences about how the person you are nominating represents the values for the award.

1) The Nora Award: Named in honor of Madrona activist Nora Wood, this award is given to a Madrona resident who, over time and in ways both large and small, has left a personal mark on the community.2) The Local Hero Award: Given to a Madrona resident for an act of heroism, singular kindness or generosity.3) The Tyrone Love Unsung Hero Award: Given to a Madrona resident for service to others in the larger community. Named after community and youth activist and mentor Tyrone Love who dedicated much of his life to the youth of the community.4) The Madrona Resident for Life Award: Bestowed upon a long-time, active resident who has left Madrona but remains dearly missed.5) The Madrona Good Neighbor Award: This award goes to an organization whose activities particularly benefit Madrona.

Madrona Woods: The Season for ThanksBy Judith Starbuck, Grand Ave.

I’m thankful, first of all, for the beauty and tranquility of Madro-na Woods. In this season the wind rustling in the big leaf maple canopy draws my gaze upward to notice the leaves changing from green to yellow to brown. Our little stream delights me with its gurgling sound as I stand on one of the bridges.

Secondly, I’m thankful to be able to spend time with the people who come to work parties. They’re cheerful and fun, are knowl-edgeable about things we all care about, and are dedicated to maintaining this beautiful urban forest that has been restored by a changing cast of characters since 1998.

And, more specifically, I’m thankful to Friends of Cedar River Watershed for bringing a great group to the September work party to help remove morning glory/bindweed on the area most recently restored on the south edge of the woods. We took out many bags of this persistent invasive which must go to the landfill instead of composting on site because of its propensity to re-sprout from tiny pieces. FCRW has been a solid partner over the last two years in the clearing, planting, and mainte-nance of this last piece of our overall restoration. And they give informative talks when requested about the importance of the Cedar River watershed to both people and salmon.

Work parties are held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am to 1:00pm. On Nov. 22 the task will be planting. The December one is cancelled because of the holidays. Check

the website for details of when and where to meet: www.madro-nawoods.org/get-involved/work-parties/. You can also go to cedar.greencitypartnerships.org and click on CEDAR. Put in Green Seattle Partnership and select Madrona Park to learn details and indicate you will attend. You can find announcements of work parties and all kinds of interesting information and pho-tos on our website: www.madronawoods.org. And we have a Facebook page too.

23rd Avenue Action Plan In late September, 23rd Ave Advisory Core Team (ACT) members and supporting organizations presented its final 23rd Ave Action Plan, focusing on geographic areas described as: 23rd and Union:This is a neighborhood scale destination with housing above businesses that draw customers from the larger neighborhood. It builds on what it already has: a cinema, churches and a major foundation that provides services. Plans are already underway on two key properties. This vision creates a cohesive fabric of buildings and uses by incorporating those two proposals to create a node that reads as a place… a destination.23rd and Cherry:This is a smaller scale node with an abundance of community assets, especially for youth. It is home to a park, Garfield High School, community center, teen center, arts programs, and small businesses including culturally specific restaurants. The focus here is to improve safety through increased pedestrian activity on the sidewalks and more “eyes on the streets” and to create a finer grained place that allows those things special to this node, like Ezell’s, to stay and flourish.23rd and Jackson:This is a larger scale node with regional destinations such as Pratt, the Wood Technology Center, Seattle Vocational Institute, and Langston Hughes nearby. It also has housing for a broad mix of people, social services and parks, with a library nearby. Finally, it is the place to shop for daily household needs. The proposal adds housing and businesses, and leverages a key site to improve community connections through the node.

For much more information visit the plan at: www.seattle.gov/dpd/cs/groups/pan/@pan/documents/web_informational/p2138415.pdf

In late September Ethan Stowell’s Red Cow Restaurant sold an impressive 130 burgers in three hours, giving all proceeds in-cluding food, beverage, and gratuities to Madrona-based Amara Parenting and the children and families they serve.

October’s meeting of Business Owners of Madrona (BOOM) held at Bottlehouse covered many topics, main among them recent break-ins on 34th near Pike. Organizations and residents are encouraged to install locks with keys on both sides on storefront doors.

Seattle Transportation Benefit District - Prop 1 As Seattle residents, the November vote on Proposition 1 provides the opportunity to give Seattle a voice in determining its transit service and the means to accomplish its transit goals. Recent events at Metro allow us to move from desperately try-ing to hold onto the routes we rely on to a different position if we favor Proposition 1. The upcoming vote is an opportunity to make significant improvements in the reliability of transit service and meet the needs of our quickly growing population; this is an unforeseen windfall, putting voters in a unique posi-tion to make a difference in how we all get around the city. You will find Seattle Transportation Benefit District Prop 1 at the end of the list, so please take the time to find it on your ballot before mailing it in by Nov. 4.

Many of the routes we have been concerned about in the Central Area and First Hill area have been identified by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) as priorities for service improvements, including bus routes 2, 3, 4, 8, 14, 27, 48, and 60. Thus Madrona residents will see a direct benefit by supporting the ballot measure.More information is available at: transportationchoices.org/action/seattletransit

Additionally, see the League of Women Voters’ explanation of why they support the transit measure at: http://www.seattlelwv.org/advocacy

Madrona Dining and Sipping SocietyBy Audrey Seale, 36th Ave.

MDSS had another engaging and delicious dinner event in October, this time at Tutta Bella in Columbia City. Their executive chef reached back into his memories of growing up in his Italian-American neighborhood. He created a four-course Italian dinner for MDSS just like those families would have enjoyed. Lisa S. said it tasted just like her grandmother cooked for her family.

We’ve always said that at MDSS we can turn your neighbors into friends. Well that night we became “family.” We extended the invitation to the Columbia City neighborhood and showed them what a good time we always have. Looks like one result is that soon we will have a cousin group in the Columbia City Dining & Sipping Society. The Madison Valley DSS has been meeting for over a year so the idea is spreading.

To learn about Madrona Dine and Sip plans, including a few special invitations extended to our group, you need to be on the MDSS email list. You will receive evites with the details and an RSVP opportunity for each event to provide a simple and accurate count for our restaurant partners. If you wish to join us, please contact me at [email protected]

Holiday Wine 101: Thanksgiving Picks By the Sommeliers at Madrona’s Bottlehouse

The approaching holiday season gives rise to questions about wine such as: what wine goes with pumpkin pie? or which winewill impress the in-laws? We’ve got just the bottle, whether it’s for pairing, sharing, or scrooging away for a solitary bottle in the holiday hubbub.

Our approach to selecting wines for the holiday table is simple: there should be as much variety at the bar as there is on the plate. Think about the smorgasbord of flavors at a Thanksgiving feast - everything from the rich gaminess of turkey and chicken to the delicate flavor of pumpkin pie stoked with the usual sus-pects like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. How can wine help highlight the diversity on your dinner plate?

Rosé is known to play well with lots of different foods, and we suggest uncorking a bottle during appetizers. Try Tavel, a flexible, food-friendly rosé, made by a producer who makes rosé exclusively. Omero Cellars in Oregon’s Williamette Valley makes a palette-pleasing Pinot Noir rosé.

If your main concern is the main course, though, look to reds like Beaujolais Nouveau, which is comparable to Pinot Noir in its friendliness to gamey foods. Light-bodied and refresh-ing, it is a great choice for a hearty dish. And while we’re on the subject of Pinot Noir, it would make a swell selection for pairing with your Thanksgiving centerpiece, too. Sardinian reds like Palazzo Di Cannonau and Northwest takes on Bordeaux blends--like Avennia Gravura from the Columbia Valley--also rank high on our list of festive favorites.

For dessert, try Vin Santo, an Italian dessert wine whose hints of caramel and butterscotch pair perfectly with pumpkin pie. The creamy, nutty qualities of Spanish sherry Oloroso make it another suitable pal for pumpkin pie. We also recommend asking guests to bring along a bottle to ensure that your Thanksgiving table provides several different selections. And above all, enjoy the day.
