Newsletter kindly sponsored by Elite Racing Club This day of all the days we have at Greatwood is one of the happiest and most fulfilling. It is wonderful to be part of something which has led to so many learners achieve qualifications. It is also very special to witness the pride of not only the students, but also the parents and all the staff. A friend of ours calls this The Clapping Day, because we celebrate each and every success individually and it involves a rather extreme amount of applause. We were delighted to welcome our Patron, The Rt Hon Robert Buckland MP QC. Mr Buckland very kindly addressed and praised the students and young people and his presence made the day even more special. Jane Muir Brooks opened the show with a very good speech partially taken from a thought provoking speech on education by President Obama. Equine Rehoming NewsPENNY MAX (MAX) - It is with great pleasurewe can announce that after two and a half yearsat Greatwood 11 year old Penny Max byFlemensfirth out of Ballymartin Trix is heading tohis forever home with Greatwood’s YardManager James Taylor. Max was part of theHighclere Racing Syndicate and is still fondlyremembered by many of their members. He hada short but successful racing career winning 3 outof his 6 starts and placed in 2 more. Arriving inJanuary 2015, just a month before James joinedthe team, Max made a lasting impression when, during his first turn out into the sand school, heattempted to clear two stacked Heston strawbales from a near enough standstill and almostsucceeded. It was at that point that Jamesdecided that he was the horse for him. After aninitial six months off to wind down he still proveda handful to get back on in the ménage, buckingand squealing every time James got on. But themore of a challenge he put up the moredetermined James was and Penny Max enjoyedthe fact he couldn’t quite shake James off. Aftermany a bucking session and the occasional nearmiss he is now almost a reformed character. Thepair are enjoying schooling, jumping with an aimto event in 2018. Max still likes to stick in theoccasional buck mostly after jumping a big fencejust to make sure he keeps James on his toes.

GEOFF - 6 Year old Geoff by Teofilo out of NeatShilling was rehomed to Jackie near Chepstow inWales on 15th April 2017. Jackie also has anotherGreatwood horse 14 Year old Zero by Hallingout of Zonda who she rehomed on 11th July2015, so we were very pleased when Jackiecalled looking for a second horse as we knew

Geoff would be going to a wonderful home.Since Geoff arrived in Wales he has gone fromstrength to strength, we get regular updates andphotos of their activities ranging from grid-worksessions to the fantastic cross country courseJackie’s husband built in their field to practiceover. Although during the building of the jumpsGeoff preferred to run off with the red and whiteflags or dismantle the jumps as quickly as theywere being built.

Rehoming this year has been particularlyexciting as we have a fantastic young cropof horses that, after having last summer andwinter off to wind down after coming out oftraining, have been excelling the past fewmonths in their retraining programme andare ready to find their forever home.

In 2015 Octopus Investments set up the OctopusFoundation and Octopus Giving, to support fivecarefully chosen charities; each charity wasselected because they meant something to theOctopus employees. Greatwood was fortunateenough to be chosen as one of those charities.

What Octopus Foundation Says -“We take the skills and resources at our disposal andwe give five brilliant entrepreneurial charities, led byinspirational people, every bit of help we can.

Every Octopus employee receives a volunteer dayeach year which they can spend working with one ofour chosen charities. Together we’ve already donatedover 4,000 hours and have pledged a further 7,000hours for the rest of this year”

Over the last three years Octopus Foundation hasastounded us with the level of generosity that hasbeen bestowed on us, nearly £100,000 in fact. That equates to 4,480 hours of teaching, helpingus to deliver education to hundreds of youngpeople and that doesn’t even include all the hoursof painting, weeding and poo picking that theOctopus volunteers have done as well.A heartfelt thank you.

The Impossible Dilemma that had to be Faced Sometime

When Deano’s Beeno and Paul Cass arrived onthe same day long ago in 2003, we little thoughtthat this partnership would be so steadfast andlongstanding. Deano’s had only really just retiredfrom his salubrious and outstanding career, hearrived to us in tip top condition and it was easyto see that his character was a one off and acomplicated one at that. It was also easy tounderstand why (and I think it was RodneyMasters from The Racing Post), described him as‘gifted and cussed in equal measure’. Deano’swould not suffer fools gladly, whether it be humanor equine, and it would be difficult to work outhow to manage him, everything about himdemonstrated to us that he simply would notthrive within a herd environment. It was also adaunting prospect keeping this enigmatic horsesafe; (wrapping in cotton wool was always atempting option). So when we popped this funnyplain little dark horse with the big Roman nose, next to him, it was touch and go to see whetherthey would get on. Thankfully Paul Cass was nothreat to Deano’s (poor old Paul’s career wasscarcely memorable, 15 out of 15 at Catterick inhis only race). Over the years they grazed andsunbathed together in the summers, squabbledoccasionally over food, and were stabled nose tonose together during the winters. The only realtime there was any sort of upset was right at thebeginning when we rugged them before anonslaught of heavy rain. Deano’s failed torecognise the transformed Paul and approachedhim in a similar fashion as a roaring stallion. Wehad to quickly remove Paul’s rug and then all waswell again. So you can imagine that as the yearswent by, there became an increasing dread as to

what would happen should advancing years takeits toll and one had to be left on their own.

As with quite a number of animals, catastropheshave a habit of arriving with terrifying speed. Wediscovered Paul suffering from colic completelyout of the blue first thing in the morning when wewere doing field checks. The vet was called butsadly despite the usual cocktail of drugs we wereunable to save Paul, he became in danger ofdescending into toxic shock and sadly, he had tobe put to sleep. Paul and Deano’s were out intheir field together, Deano’s had witnessed thewhole thing and when finally Paul lay prone on theground, Deano’s just went over and sniffed him.He seemed to have absorbed that Paul was gone.So now the long dreaded dilemma truly began. How were we going to manage Deano’s when hispal of 14 years was no more? It wouldn’t be fair orright to keep him on his own, he would not handlea herd situation and we were also worried that hewould pine.

We move to Harry (Framed). Harry has been withus for years, although he was rehomed for anumber of those years to our dear friend andsupporter Mrs Ford. Mrs Ford even nursed Harrythrough a fractured leg for some six months or so,

Deano’s and Paul

and loved him dearly. She was very sad that he hadto return to us but she felt that her advancingyears precluded her from being his sole carer, andthe inevitable hard work over the winter monthswas simply not practible. When Harry came backhe hooked up with a grey, Quixotry and althoughthey were in a herd, these two had to be broughtin and out together, had to be stabled next to eachother. In short, where Quixotry was, Harry hadto be and vice versa. A little like that bit in FarFrom The Madding Crowd with Julie Christie andAlan Bates, when he tells her ‘when I look upthere you shall be, and when you look up there Ishall be’. And so it was with Harry and Quix. Weadmit, that we were perhaps putting off the saddecision with Quixotry, as a grey he wassuccumbing to increasing large intrusivemelanoma’s, it was difficult managing the fliesaround the sites in the summer, and his frontlameness was becoming an ongoing issue.Quixotry had begun to be uncomfortable.Quixotry had a special and firm place in thechildren’s hearts because he was so gentle andkind, but unhappily, he, like Paul, had to be put tosleep for welfare reasons. It was a sad day indeed. So now we had Harry and Deano’s, on their own, would they hit it off with each other when theywere both very staid in their ways? Could we risk

putting them together? Deano’s after all, hadn’tbeen up close and personal with anyone otherthan Paul for 14 years.

We placed Harry in Paul’s old winter stable nextto Deano’s and waited for the fireworks. Harrywas much more upset about Quix at the time, because we think that Deano’s had had enoughtime to absorb that Paul had gone, whereas, Harrywas still anxious about the loss of Quix.Incidentally, over the years when similar thingshave happened to close friends, we have foundthat it makes a difference if the body is left for awhile so that the horse left behind can understand

what has happened.

Interestingly, whilst Harry was quiet and sulky,Deano’s was far more interested, Harry was theone that kicked, bucked, squealed , turned hisback and was generally unfriendly. Things hadsettled down a little by the morning and with acertain amount of trepidation we turned them outinto the field together. Nothing happened. Theywandered off, and have never looked back. Harryis a little more dominant than Paul was which haschanged the dynamics a bit, but they are bothhappy and appear to almost fond of each other.

Harry is going to have a bit of a wakeup call atsome stage. It had always been Paul’s job toaccompany Deano’s when he was booked for hissignature strut in front of his adoring fans. Paulbore all the sprucing up prior to the parades ingood heart and with great patience. It will beinteresting if Harry can step up to that too.

All’s Well That Ends Well. The seeminglyimpossible dilemma was averted.

Elite Racing ClubOf course, when Deano’s arrived, it was the firsttime we encountered the nationally known andlargest UK racing syndicate Elite Racing Club.Deano’s had been owned by Axom, part of ERC.There began a relationship of which we are notonly extremely proud but also very grateful. TonyHill, ERC’s Founder has championed Greatwoodsince 2003, and we are pleased to know him as afriend.

ERC have designed, printed and sent out ournewsletters, three times a year during pretty muchall the time we have had the privilege to knowthem. This is a remarkable and incrediblygenerous donation to us. It is never taken forgranted, and its value to us is incalculable.

Thank you Tony for your abounding munificence, thank you Mandy and thank you Sue (whopainstakingly designs it all and masterminds thewhole thing). Thank you all for helpingGreatwood.

The Racing Foundation was established in 2012with funding resulting from the UK government’ssale of the Horserace Totalisator Board ("Tote").

The Foundation aims to use these funds to achievea lasting legacy for the sport of horseracing bymaking grants to charities associated with the UKhorseracing and Thoroughbred breeding industry, supporting work in social welfare, training andeducation, racehorse welfare, equine scienceresearch, heritage and culture. Greatwood hasreceived grants in the past for both racehorsewelfare as well as training and education for whichwe are immensely grateful. We would like to thankthe Racing Foundation for their most recent granttowards our educational programmes.

Upbeet with UplandsWith the vegetable garden, polytunnel andkitchen now all well established and equipped ithas been a huge pleasure to watch and supportour students as they take such as active part inGreatwood’s “(Pitch) Fork to Plate” initiative.A newspaper article entitled “5 Reasons why youshould eat Beetroot” inspired our UplandsSchool and Education Trust learners togerminate, plant, nurture, harvest and cook thisremarkable vegetable as part of our own “healthyschool” programme. In addition to loweringblood pressure and preventing dementia, students were especially interested to learn thatbeetroot can also apparently help you to runfaster (according to a new study from theUniversity of Exeter) and even help you to holdyour breath for longer!

Enthusiasm waned a little when the learners

realised that thefirst step inensuring a goodbeet harvest wasthe hard work andsoil preparationthat takes place inthe autumn andwinter months.

However, despite coldweather, determinationand some great teamworkmeant that the beds wereweeded, dug over andthen enriched with well-rotted Thoroughbredmanure.

Winter passed and ourlearners were kept busywith a variety of animal

care activities. However, there was a welcomeharvest of leeks and potatoes which the studentsmade into a delicious soup to warm them after amorning working on the yard. As winter recededwe walked the Greatwood pathways looking forsigns of spring and kept busy in the polytunnel, sowing seeds and caring for the “superfood”seedlings and young plants.

The warm summer meant regular watering andweeding to ensure our plants had the bestpossible environment for healthy growth. The

Uplands learners showed great enthusiasm andcommitment for these tasks, using companionplanting and beer traps to keep potential pestsunder control. The young leaves wereoccasionally picked to add colour and vitamins toa salad or stir-fry but fortunately there was noneed for us to use them in their ancient role ofbinding wounds!

Towards the end of the summer term, all the careand hard work paid off and the young peoplefrom Uplands were thrilled to be able to harvesta bumper crop of their “Perfect 3” varietybeetroot.

We could hardly wait to get back to the kitchento create our chocolate beetroot brownies. Itwas quite challenging work, peeling and cookingthe beets and following a relatively complexrecipe with a number of different processes, butwell worth the effort in the end. What could bebetter than a delicious treat that can potentiallylower your blood pressure and make you runfaster; surely it’s the best of all worlds?

Reflecting Back and Looking Forward As we draw to the end of the academic year, whichculminates in our hugely successful CertificatePresentation Day in July, now is the time to lookback at the past 10 months and all that has beenachieved at Greatwood.

We have certainly been faced with some challengesthis year, but our resilience has remained and thesmiles have never faltered. This year saw a vastincrease in the number of primary schools wishingto enrol their learners on our HorsePower andHorsePower Plus programmes, with manyextending their time well beyond the initial six weekschedule. The successes on this programme havebeen truly impactful with one particular learnerboosting his confidence and self-esteem so muchthat he was able to re-join his mainstream peergroup, a feat which had been deemed nigh onimpossible in such a short space of time.

The year also saw many successes on our othereducational programmes, with learners from StJohn’s Marlborough, Stratton PRU, The RidgewaySchool, Swindon and Uplands School & EducationalTrust all leaving us with not only a plethora ofqualifications, but also increased confidence and self-worth; a new set of transferrable skills for thefuture; and perhaps most importantly, a smile ontheir face and memories to be treasured.

Despite the long summer break looming, there is notime for resting on our laurels as we look to thefuture. Following feedback from schools and in linewith government changes to statutory requirementsfor assessment, from September 2017 Greatwoodwill be looking to offer the BTEC First Award inAnimal Care alongside our existing educationalprogrammes. This award forms part of the recently

introduced suite of ‘Tech Awards’ and means thatany learner achieving this qualification will be ableto use the points gained to complement their GCSEresults and will also count towards the schools‘Progress 8’ data.

The introduction of any new qualification inevitablyleads to some changes, but thankfully not allinvolving mountains of paperwork and form filling. For us this means the expansion of our animalmenagerie. Of course our resident Thoroughbredswill still play a major role in our educationalprogrammes, but in order to meet the BTECguidelines we will be looking to add some slightlymore exotic creatures to the mix such as BeardedDragons and a couple of ferrets. Our animalrecruitment drive began earlier in the year withEmma, our Head of Education, introducing 15 newchickens to our existing flock. Having sadly lost herown eggs a week or so earlier, mother hen Victoriasoon took the new arrivals to task, fluffing up herfeathers, clucking wildly and ensuring nobodywandered off. She doesn’t seem the slightest bitphased that the bantam hens are almost fully grownthemselves!

Shaun was registered on our ‘Racing Ahead’ programme which leads to a Level1 Award in an Introduction to the Horse Racing Industry and in his final exam he achieved 93%. Hehas demonstrated a desire to work within the racing industry and a dedication to learning as much aspossible about the sport and its history. His ultimate dream is to become a successful jockey and he ishoping to gain a place at one of the countries only two racing schools within the next couple of years.

Alicia completed our ‘Initial Bit’ programme (1st4Sport Entry L3Award in ‘Recognising, Putting on and Cleaning Saddle and Bridle’). She had never worked with horsesbefore she started the 14 week programme but now she is able to confidently tack up and prepare ahorse for basic exercise. She is also looking to move into independent housing as a direct result ofhow she coped in an unfamiliar and challenging environment at Greatwood.

Nell from St Johns has recently completedGreatwood’s 10 week NOCN accredited ‘Developing Confidence’ programme. She is a keen piano player and after completing the programme she confessedthat she now has enough confidence to want to perform in public and she is keento try out her own compositions. We look forward to hearing them.

Leo has recently completed nine months of our ‘Horse PowerPlus’ programme during which time he has progressed from not being in class at all to being back fulltime in education with the rest of his friends. He is also spending more time socialising outside ofschool time and is proud, rather than somewhat embarrassed, of the work he produces.

Whenhe first started at Greatwood, Josh would be the firstto admit that he was scared of both the horses andthe mess they make, yet after a full year atGreatwood he achieved our ‘Freedom 2 Learn’qualification and was much more confident about hisown abilities and actually getting into a stable with ahorse. He is still working on his poo picking skills…

Abdul leftGreatwood one full year ago and in thistime he has completed three monthswork experience for Welsh racehorsetrainer Nicki Evans; graduated from theNorthern Racing College and gained aposition working as an apprentice forracehorse trainer Andrew Balding atKingsclere. He is progressing well andstill focused on being successful in theracing industry.

Planning for Greatwood’s FutureOur vision is simple:

We would like to secure a long-term future for Greatwood by purchasing the farmwe currently lease, thereby ensuring that for generations to come, the charity cancontinue to rescue and rehabilitate vulnerable ex-racehorses as well as educatingchildren and young people with additional educational needs.

One way in which you can help secure Greatwood’s vision is by leaving us a gift inyour Will and so becoming an integral part of Greatwood’s future.

DID YOU KNOW?• Greatwood has helped over 1,500 horses since 1993• Since 2006 Greatwood has helped over 3,500 young people • Greatwood was the first charity to use ex-racehorses to educate young people• Greatwood is the only ex-racehorse charity that does NOT have criteria for entry – we will

never turn away a horse at risk; in danger; or who is in fear of neglect or suffering• It costs Greatwood £4,318 to care for each horse; a total of £215,903 each year• It costs Greatwood £136 per student per day to deliver our educational programmes, a total of

£313,000 each year• For every £1 Greatwood spent on fundraising we raised £4.24

We know that creating a Will is a very private affair and that you will want to put your loved onesfirst but IMAGINE the difference a gift would make in securing Greatwood’s future. If the time isever right for you to remember us in your Will, we’re here to help. Every gift, no matter the size, means a great deal to us and to those that we help.

James Paget, one of Greatwood’s NEETstudents who completed the Get Goingprogramme, subsequently went onto to theNorthern Racing College and is now pursuing acareer within the racing industry.

Our promises to you:• We will treat you fairly when giving you theopportunity to leave a legacy – we won’t intrude onyour privacy by telephoning you unless you requestthat method of contact.• We will never ask you the size or type of legacy ifyou decide to support our work this way – becauseevery gift makes a difference.• We absolutely recognise your family and friendscome first in your Will.• We understand that circumstances change andthere may be a time where you need to takeGreatwood out of your Will.• We promise to use your gift wisely
