KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 25 - 2018 Thursday 16 Aug 2018 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT So far it has been a very busy term and as we enter week 5 we have a lot more exciting things taking place. Building Works As mentioned by Wendy in last week’s newsletter, the front garden is looking amazing. The ‘old’ office has been gutted and is ready for the new fit out. The new staffroom is almost ready and staff are extremely excited to have a new larger staffroom. The 5/6 toilets are currently being tiled and will be ready in a couple of weeks. Over the next few weeks work will start on the F-2 toilets. Thank you for your patience whilst the building works continue. Parent Survey Thank you to all those who are completing the survey; we look forward to your input into future planning for our school. If you have any difficulties with the survey, please let us know. Census The August census continued this week with information forwarded to the Department of Education including Student Health and Wellbeing, Student Support Services, English as an Additional Language, Koorie Outcomes, Languages Education, Specialized Programs, Student Voice and Participation, Students with Disabilities, Transition to Primary School and Secondary School, and Digital Learning. Our data included the number of students at KPS who have asthma. This number is 88. It is important that all of these students have up to date asthma management plans. If we do not have your child’s management plan please contact Stacey Williams at the office. Student and Parent Learning Conferences will be next Tuesday and Wednesday you can book an interview time with the classroom or specialist teacher on Compass. If you need assistance please nsee Wendy or myself. If you have misplaced your login details see Mrs Williams at the office. Celebration of Learning Week We will celebrate Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Book Weeks altogether as a week of Celebration of Learning Week next week 20 th 24 th August. Please see the Upcoming Events section for the activities including, open mornings, collaborative narrative, lunch time activities and the dress up parade on Friday. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Transition Program This term 36, Year 6 students will be participating in Kids in the Kitchen (KIK). KIK is a practical transition cooking program, our Year 6 students work with Year 8 students who act as positive role models. Year 6 students will begin to establish a relationship and link with the Secondary School, this is important for a successful transition from Primary to Secondary School. It is also seen as an opportunity for the Year 6 students to further develop self-confidence and self-esteem. Men’s Shed Last Wednesday 7 of our Year 5 students started a six week program at the Melton Men’s Shed. The students will be making a tool box and pencil case. Oxford Wordlist We are always looking to implement the latest, research driven initiatives and strategies to improve student learning outcomes. With this in mind, we will no longer be sending home reading wordlists with our students, as part of their homework. We are focusing on teaching words from the Oxford Wordlist {high frequency words}, in context, through the texts our students read during shared, guided and independent reading sessions. A greater focus on these words being taught in context, rather than in isolation, can be the difference between a student mastering these words or not. When we focus on teaching words within the context of texts students are reading, we demonstrate the purpose and importance of these words. As a result, our students receive instruction and practice in both recognition and comprehension at the same time, rather than in isolation. If you have any questions or require any further information please contact Kim Mitchell. Have a great week, Tom Goddard (Acting Principal) ~ Learning Together PFA NEWS If you would like to assist the PFA in any way please leave your details at the office or contact Elizabeth Bajada on 0404 525 975 or [email protected].
